HRLRC MEETING SCHEDULE 2002 Feb. 1 General Membership Meeting & Board Meeting for January February 19 Board Meeting March 1 General Membership Meeting March 19 Board Meeting April 5 General Membership Meeting & Elections MEDINA MATCHES CANCELLED The Medina Kennel Club Puppy Matches scheduled for Saturday February 16 and Sunday February 17 have been cancelled. The back-toback matches were to be held at the Army s National Guard Armory in Medina. The armories have been put on an emergency level of alertness and due to this fact, no public function can be held in an armory building. The armories do contain arms and leaving the buildings open to the public presents a very high risk for the public if terrorists would want to gain access to arms. No suitable alternative site has been found so the MKC Board voted to cancel the matches.

MINUTES FOR THE HRLRC BOARD MEETING 12/8/01 A meeting of the HRLRC Board was held at the home of Norm and Sheila Norgren in Howell, MI Dec. 8, Board members present were: Mary MacLean, Sheila Norgren, Helen Bronson, Nancy Chargo, Angela Ewald, Cheryl Wellnitz, Stella Blair, George and Bev Schnell. Since this was our annual Christmas party we had a short Board Meeting before the party and the regular meeting. The Board minutes were accepted as read. A motion was made and passed granting life membership and the purchase of stained glass Labradors to Judy Trevino, Teri Groves and Laura Michaels. It was pointed out that this action should have been taken sooner. Prices on the stained glass to be determined. Mary MacLean will be our legislative contact with help from Bev, Annie and Sheila. At this time the concern is the PPA. Mary has been speaking to our Senators and has offered to help rewrite the PPA since we feel that the current form is unacceptable. As there was no further business the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Sheila Norgren, Recording Secretary MINUTES FOR THE HRLRC GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING 12/8/01 A meeting of the HRLRC was held at the home of Norm and Sheila Norgren in Howell, MI on Dec. 8, This was the Club s annual Christmas party. All Board members were present. And three special people joined us: Diane Masserant, Bob and Margaret Curtis. Welcome back. (No listing was given by the Recording Secretary of the other club members present). Treasurer s Report: Accepted as read. New Business: Bob Curtis volunteered to steward the spring specialty. We need to determine what food we plan to provide for the Specialty. Mary MacLean explained the PPA and why in its current form and with the lawsuit attached to the bill that it is potentially damaging to hobby breeders. She further explained that she has been asked to help reqrite the bill so that it is more acceptable. As there was no further business the meeting was adjourned at 7:15. MERRY CHRISTMAS Respectfully submitted, Sheila Norgren, Recording Secretary MINUTES FOR THE HRLRC GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING 1/11/02 7:40 p.m. meeting called to order by President Beverly Schnell. Treasurer s Report: Accepted as read. Due to the absence of the Recording Secretary there were no minutes read from the December General Membership Meeting and Christmas Party. Corresponding Secretary: Angela received a letter from Paws With A Cause requesting a donation. Annie reminded everyone that we had previously approved a motion to make a yearly donation of $ to Paws. After a brief discussion it was decided to send the $500 as previously agreed upon. Field: Ron reported that he had received a Land Use Application from the DNR and Wayne Warners. Ron will send the application and fees requesting the dates of May 4 th and September 7, Spring Specialty: All is going smoothly and Bob Curtis and Pauline Mortier will be the ring stewards. Fall Specialty: Specialty judges have been procured and they are Angela Williams of Foulby U.K., Paula Nykiel, and Carla Frey of Saltmeadow for Sweepstakes. Annie will submit the specialty forms to AKC this month. She is going to check with Cabela s about the possibility of holding the specialty on the grounds of their store. Will also be contacting motels and the Fireman s Park people if we will hold the specialty there. New Board Slate announced: Bev Schnell, President; Nancy Chargo, Vice President; Cheryl Wellnitz, Treasurer; Jeanine Asch, Recording Secretary; Angela Ewald, Corresponding Secretary. Board: Cathy Culpert, Mary MacLean, Sheila Norgren, Cindy Skiba and George Schnell. Insurance Renewal: Cathy Culpert obtained 2 quotes from other agencies and the cost was so close to what we are paying now that we didn t feel it was worthwhile to change agencies. The field and conformation trailers both need to be added to the policies for theft and fire coverage. Motion made and carried to add on trailers. Mike Merians volunteered to bring and store the field trailers on his parents property near Fowlerville. An inventory will be made of the equipment in this trailer. Judy Trevino questioned the profit/loss statement for the Fall Specialty so that she might figure the amount to donate to the Firemen for the use of the park. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Annie Cogo

LABRADOR BREED COUNCIL USA Price Jessup, of the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac, is spearheading the possibility of establishing a Labrador Breed Council for all the local and regional Labrador Clubs in the U.S. This Council would be patterned after the Labrador Breed Council in the U.K. This issue will be discussed at the HRLRC General Membership Meeting on Feb. 1, A questionnaire on the viability and possibility of establishing this council will be discussed and filled out at this same General Membership Meeting. Extensive commentary on the purpose and importance of the Labrador Breed Council was received from Carole Coode of Warringah Labradors in the U.K. If you are interested in this commentary, Pauline Mortier at pmortier@ismi.net and she will forward it to you via in the Microsoft Word format. If there is enough interest in establishing this Council for the USA, there will be an initial meeting of the Council held on one of the evenings at the LRC of the Potomac Specialty in Frederick, Maryland on April 10-12, HRLRC LIST From Michelle VeuCasovic The HRLRC list that Laura Michaels created for us is a wonderful tool to keep everyone informed of club activities, share knowledge and to pass along other noteworthy information to our membership. Please be aware that when you send or reply to a message, your comments are forwarded to everyone who is a member of the list. At the January meeting, members voiced concerns about jokes and other messages containing personal types of information being distributed via the club s list. Please use the HRLRC list to pass along information that you want to share with ALL club members. Don t we all receive a million jokes each week already? HIP DYSPLASIA STUDY From Laura Michaels per Al Stinson A major five-university FDA study (MSU is the flagship university) began last fall on a new analgesic drug for the treatment of arthritis in dogs with hip dysplasia. We are looking for dogs 1-10 years of age, pounds, that will qualify for this project. The sponsor company will cover all fees and significant compensation ($500) will be available to induce clients to involve their dogs in this project. For details or if you have a dog to enroll in the study, please contact Dr. Charles DeCamp at , Dr. Dejardin at , or contact the Office of Clinical Research at ADVANCED CANINE REPRODUCTION SEMINAR Information from Michelle VeuCasovic The Veterinary Information network and the Pet Care Forum would like to thank all of you who made the Canine Reproduction Seminar with Dr. Robert Van Hutchison, sponsored by Veterinary Perinatal Services, Inc., the most successful event in our history! We had a total of 562 in attendance. We had visitors from the U.S., Canada, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, England, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, France and Argentina. Thank you so much for your interest! Dr. Hutch expressed his pleasure at the great questions he was asked, and was extremely impressed with the level of awareness and dedication among those in attendance. He is very sorry he didn t have time to answer each question, but in all honesty, we d have had to run the seminar for 24 hours to get to them all! Due to the extremely high interest in this subject, we are considering holding an Advanced Canine Reproduction Seminar in the near future. This event would have limited registration as well as a week of follow-up questions with Dr. Hutch. We would need to charge a small fee to cover the expenses of this event, but it would present an unparalleled opportunity to explore your questions and case histories in depth with Dr. Hutchison. If you are interested, please K9Repro@vin.com and let me know! The event transcript is at /VetHospital/PCF03140.htm for those who would like to review the event, save it for future reference, or were unable to make it to the seminar. This link will be on the seminar main page at o.htm permanently. Again thank you from all of us for your support, and we invite you to join us at our regular weekly Dog Breeders chat, every Tuesday evening from 9-10 PM Eastern in the Dog Den chat room, which you can reach from the link at at.htm And drop by our Dog Breeding Message Board, listed under Dogs General Topics at ards.htm. Sincerely, Christie Keith Director, Pet Care Forum Veterinary Information Network, Inc.

AKC REGISTRATION PROPOSAL Information from Michelle VeuCasovic The following excerpt is a proposal that was published in the AKC's Comments to Delegates on December 11, 2001, by AKC's Chairman David Merriam. The subject at hand is registration, and specifically how it pertains to co-ownerships and the breeding and legal issues that come with co-ownerships. I thought the proposal was noteworthy, as it states the necessity of all breeders who coown dogs to have written contracts in place. Please continue to read David Merriam's comments..... I would now like to spend some time on a very important subject -- registration. For as long as I can remember, AKC has considered a registration procedure where but one person is the responsible party on each registered dog. Somehow we did not come up with a method which would accomplish that and also protect the interests of the owners of the dogs. The Board of Directors is now considering a new proposal which I believe has great merit. As background, I would mention that the problems of co-ownership have long been a costly and difficult aspect of our registration. Over 600 ownership disputes are brought to AKC every year. Approximately 250 of those develop into case matters which cost an average of $3200 each to resolve. Although we use the word owner on the registration slip, AKC does not pretend to be the authority to determine the civil or legal ownership of the dogs we register. This has caused considerable turmoil over the years. In most ownership disputes which proceed to legal action, AKC is usually included as a party. Over the years this has resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills for AKC. The new proposal will make clear that the registration slip is not proof of ownership. It is proof of AKC registration. Where multiple owners wish to register a dog with AKC, they would be required to designate one person as the responsible party. The owners would be recorded as "registrants" and the responsible party would be the "signatory". These safeguards are included in a multiple registrant application: 1. The signatory signing the application must declare that there is a written contract between all the registrants which designates him or her as the signatory. That contract must contain provisions for arbitration of ownership disputes and a waiver of legal action against AKC on the registration question. 2. Any action on the registration such as a transfer or litter application by the signatory must include a declaration that it has been approved by all the registrants. 3. If a registrant has his or her AKC registration privileges suspended, the contract will provide that the person must resign as a registrant. This will avoid the problem of a suspended co-registrant putting the dog on referral and out of use. 4. Registrants of record of the dam will be recorded as the breeders of litters of that bitch. These are some of the highlights of the proposal. It has been submitted to three delegate committees for their input. As we refine it, your input will also be sought. I am hopeful that we have finally found a procedure that solves one of our thorny management problems in registration and still protects the owners of the dogs involved. NYLABONE RECALL One of the most trusted names in dog chews is Nylabone. For 40 years they ve made some of the most popular dog chews. But there is growing evidence that some of their product lines like one made from gummy material could be harmful, even fatal, to your dog. At the Renton veterinary hospital she manages, Gail Scott has declared some chew toys off-limits. I gave this one one similar to this to my own dog, she said, holding up a Nylabone plaque attacker, the kind that she gave to her Doberman Sting. He had broken the whole end off and it was going down his throat. But I retrieved it quickly and of course took it away from him, Scott said. Had it been swallowed, probably within days, this could have been lodged somewhere in the intestinal tract and probably had to be retrieved surgically. But even surgery couldn t save Timber. It was only after the champion Alaskan Malamute died in Virginia that a vet discovered a chunk of plaque attacker lodged in his stomach. In Texas, the same fate was in store for Rambo, a little poodle. The vet retrieved two pieces of what appeared to be Nylabone products, after Rambo s agonizing death. What really got me is when the vet told me he screamed and then died, said Harvey Hannah, Rambo s owner.

Virginia attorney Debra Corcoran said she s uncovered more than a hundred cases where dogs may have been injured or killed after swallowing Nylabone products. She blames the company s line of flexible chew toys. They re marketed under names like Gumma-Bone and Plaque Attacker. Some vets say they re made of an indigestible material, and plaque attacker has a knobby surface that can lodge in the digestive tract. This is a gas pocket in the stomach outlined here, Rambo s vet said, pointing to an x-ray. Rambo s x-ray highlights another problem. Nylabones don t show up on s-rays, so vets, like Rambo s can t tell what s making the dog sick. When it hung up the intestine keeps moving so it kind of knotted up like an accordion, the vet said. The following is the text of the letter sent by Nylabone in response to the problems. Nylabone products, a division of T.F.H. Publications, announced that it is replacing the Plaque Attacker line of dental dog bones. When used properly, the ASPCA approved Plaque Attacker Bones are a safe and effective aide in reducing problems associated with periodontal disease in dogs, said Glen Axelrod, President and C.E.O. of T.F.H. Publications. However, all polyurethane dental dog bones, regardless of manufacturer, can pr4esent problems when they are inappropriate in size and have become old and worn. The Plaque Attacker line of dental dog bones included the four sizes of Dental Bones made from polyurethane plastic which were introduced in the early 1990 s. The product is designed to massage a dog s teeth and gums through specially designed dental tips on a traditional dog bone shape to prevent canine periodontal disease. When improperly monitored during use, the bones can become frayed and worn, with the possibility of large pieces being bitten off and becoming lodged in a dog s intestinal tract. We are highly committed to pet safety and, while a typical small piece of the product will normally pass through a dog harmlessly, we take any amount of customer concern seriously. As such, we are discontinuing and removing all four sizes of our Bones in the Plaque Attacker line from stores and will introduce a new, improved product shortly. We will continue to work very closely with our veterinarian experts and the ASPCA to define, circulate and publish guidelines for the proper use of polyurethane dental pet products industry wide, said Axelrod. Nylabone Products, a division of T.F.H. Publications, is a leading manufacturer of premium dog chews and dental devices. Since their introduction in 1955, Nylabone dog chews have grown to be the most recognized dog chew among veterinarians, clinics and kennels. Nylabone Products carry the ASPCA seal of approval. DOG LETTERS TO GOD From Judy Trevino How come people love to smell flowers, but seldom smell one another? Where are their priorities? When we get to Heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it the same old story? Excuse me, but why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang, the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not one named for a dog? How often do you see a cougar riding around? We dogs love a nice ride! I know every breed cannot have its own model, but it would be easy to rename the Chrysler Eagle the Chrysler Beagle! If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he still a bad dog? Is it true that in Heaven, dining room tables have on-ramps? If we come back as humans, is that good or bad? When we get to the Pearly Gates, do we have to shake hands to get in? We dogs can understand human verbal instructions, hand signals, whistles, horns, clickers, beepers, scent IDs, electromagnetic energy fields, and Frisbee Flight paths. What do humans understand? Are there mailmen in Heaven? If there are, will I have to aplogize? May I have my testicles back?
