President s Report Hi All, Just a short report on the affairs of DogsNT. Since the Royal the grounds have improved somewhat and are nice and green. The grass has been cut on a number of occasions and has looked good for the shows that have been held recently. We have got a number of new members which is great to see and I would like to impress upon them and the long term members that some of our clubs are doing it hard. These clubs are running low on members which tends to make it difficult to run shows. You all must give thought to helping out these clubs because without the help that you can provide they will fold and if this happens then we will lose a large number of shows. Please help the clubs by seeking positions on their committees and keep our show scene alive. Cheers, Melville Hammett President 4

ANKC Notices CHEDS (Canine Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Scheme) RADIOLOGISTS PANEL - AMENDMENT Please note Dr. Mariano Makara has advised changes to his contact details. Our website has been updated and the updated listing can be accessed at: ACCEPTABLE COLOURS The ANKC Ltd Board resolved at the May 2016 Board meeting for the following motion passed at the October 2015 Board meeting as well as a subsequent electronic motion be rescinded prior to the endorsement of a recommendation received from the National Breed Standards Coordination Group. It was unanimously RESOLVED that the following two motions be rescinded: 1. Motion Board Meeting October 2015: It was resolved that in reference to colour, a note be included on any breed standard stating that highly undesirable is to be interpreted as not acceptable for inclusion on the Main Register. It was agreed this motion should only address the colour section of standards initially and any further references to highly undesirable in other sections of the standards could be dealt with by electronic motion. and 2. Electronic Motion It was resolved that ANKC Ltd determine that 1st January 2017 be the implementation date for the following resolution passed at the October 2015 Board meeting and that prior to that date the Breed Standards Co-ordination Group report to the Board on the implications of implementing this decision. It was then resolved that the Board endorse the National Breed Standards Coordination Group s recommendation: Effective from 1 January 2017 except in the case where National Breed Councils or Breed Clubs have nominated certain Colours not to be placed on the Main register as per regulations Part 6, Special Conditions for Registration of Certain Breeds (Amended 04/15 EAP). All other undesirable colours are to be placed on the Main register if desired by the Breeder. The onus is to be placed on Judges to non-award undesirable/highly undesirable colours. Prior to 1 January 2017, National Breed Councils or Breed Clubs will be invited so that they can nominate certain colours for their specific breeds not to be placed on the Main Register for health reasons and to provide evidence for their request. All Breed Clubs, or breeders who have breeds which do not have a National Breed Council or a Breed Club, are requested to forward to their Member Body office a listing of what colours for their specific breed are not to be placed on the Main Register for health reasons and to provide evidence for this request by no later than COB Friday, 11 November Tracey Barry Administrator August

ANKC Notices GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER BREED STANDARD AMENDMENT The National Breed Standards Coordination Group Chairperson, Mrs Marie Merchant has been made aware of an omission which appears in the breed standard of the German Shorthaired Pointer appearing on our website. The following highlighted section is missing under General Appearance : GENERAL APPEARANCE : A dog of noble and balanced appearance, the conformation of which ensures strength, endurance and speed. Proud attitude, smooth outlines, lean head, well carried tail, firm shiny coat and well reaching, harmonious strides emphasize its nobility. IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS: Length of body should slightly exceed height at withers. We are currently arranging for this omission to be rectified. GERMAN HUNTING TERRIER BREED STANDARD - AMMENDMENT FACIAL REGION: Nose: In harmony with the muzzle, neither too narrow nor too small, not cleft. Always black, but when the colour of the coat is dominantly brown, a brown nose is also permitted. Muzzle: Strong, pronounced jaw-muscles and distinct lower jaw, strongly pronounced chin. Eyes: Dark, small, oval, deep; the eyelids are tight. Resolute expression. FOREQUARTERS: Forefeet: Often broader than the hind feet, the well closed toes lying close to each other with sufficiently thick, hard, resistant and well pigmented pads. They are parallel, in stance as well as in movement neither turned inward nor outward. HINDQUARTERS: Hind feet: Oval to round, the well closed toes, with sufficiently thick, hard, resistant and well pigmented pads. They are parallel, in stance and in movement neither turned inward nor outward. SIZE AND WEIGHT: Weight: Weight in males and females should be according to build, not too light nor too heavy. FAULTS: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog and its ability to perform its traditional work. SEVERE FAULTS: Splayed feet, cat feet, hare feet. DISQUALIFYING FAULTS: Over- and undershot bite, wry mouth, pincer and partial pincer bite, cross-bite, irregularly placed teeth in the upper and/or lower row of teeth, missing teeth except for M3. For a complete, and up to date, version of the breed standard please visit 6

VALE - RINKE VAN DER VELDE 15/2/1934 7/7/2016 It was a very sad day, not just for Rinke s extended family, but for all those who had known Rinke when news of his passing spread like wildfire throughout Darwin and in fact many parts of Australia. He was a man who dedicated much of his life to the dog world, and most of us who have trialled in the NT and even other parts of Australia, owe much to this man for what he has done for our sport. The growth of NACA over the past 50 odd years is in no small part due to the hard yards put in by people like Rinke and his wife Jan, both who have held office bearing positions for many, many years, Rinke as President and Jan as Secretary/Registrar. NACA s formation goes back to 1958 and was for many years under the umbrella of the North Australian Show Society. The Show Society Executive appointed Rinke as Chairman of the NACA in 1971 a position he held until 1984, whilst Jan was the Secretary/Register over this same period. Rinke also presided over NACA being elevated from Associate status to that of full membership status with the ANKC in At the time of Cyclone Tracy, 24th December 1974, the records of NACA were held at the Van Der Velde s home in Fannie Bay and even though their home was almost completely destroyed, NACA s records were miraculously spared, albeit some water damage. Earlier in December, NACA had also been allocated 2.5 acres of land at the showgrounds to develop as a permanent dog area. Post Tracy fund raising by the Australian dog community as well as from overseas, resulted in over $6,000 which enabled NACA to purchase a demountable building which was initially set up in the Van Der Velde s back yard. In 1983 it was transferred to its current site at the Winnellie Show Grounds Dog Area. Back in 1967, Mrs Mary Bickerton sowed the seeds of the Darwin Obedience Dog Club. Rinke and Jan were also instrumental in getting the new club up and running, with both instructors in obedience classes. The training grounds moved from the now called George Brown Botanic Gardens to the old Bagot Park Speedway and eventually to the current site at the Winnellie Dog area, where many hours of hard work in clearing and planting and building the ablution block was carried out by Rinke and the other volunteers, giving us the wonderful grounds that we have today. Lights were a necessity due to having to train and hold most dog events in the evenings and Rinke was instrumental in achieving this development which most of us now take for granted. Over the years he put in many hundreds of unpaid hours in maintaining these grounds, irrigating, fertilizing, weeding, ant control, mowing etc. plus constructing and maintaining the various obedience, jumping and agility equipment for the DODC. In 1979, Rinke, along with Jan, Doug Ford and Gloria Page were part of the first group of people accepted into a local Novice Obedience Judges Training Course conducted by Riley Wing MBE and Keith Millington, both well known to the many older triallers in Darwin and South Australia. This was just the start for Rinke as he went on to become one of our most highly qualified and respected local judges, licensed to judge in Jumping, Agility, Tracking and Track & Search and UDX level in Obedience. A truly wonderful achievement. 8

VALE - RINKE VAN DER VELDE 15/2/1934 7/7/2016 He was also President of RASSNT, President of the Darwin Obedience Dog Club Inc for many years and Head Trainer at DODC for more years than I can remember, including right up till his hospitalisation only weeks before his passing. Rinke richly deserved the Life memberships bestowed on him by Dogs NT, DODC & RNASSNT and enjoyed the gratitude of hundreds of dog owners/triallers who have been the recipient of his advice and assistance over the years, often with their second, third or even fourth dogs. He was a mentor to many triallers, encouraging us to be the best we could be, never accepting second best. As further evidence of the respect in which Rinke was held, he was the NT representative on the Obedience, Tracking & Agility National Committees for many years. Rinke was not just a trialler, he also assisted Jan in the showing of their Basenjiis. In fact they owned the first Basenji to win a Best in Show at an All Breeds Show in Australia. They were pioneers of the breed in Darwin, breeding under the Wimbo prefix. Rinke and Jan were quite successful in showing their dogs and also competed in both Obedience and Agility trials. To many Palmerston Gundog members, Rinke was thought of as a closet gundog fan. He spent many a Sunday morning out in the bush and swamp, assisting the club in running its retrieving trials. The PGC thanks you Rinke for your support and encouragement over the years. Many older rural residents will also have had contact with Rinke as he spent many years as a Technical Officer working with the old Water Resources (and its various name changes), mapping the water table, drilling bores etc. and there wouldn t be very much of the top end that he didn t know or couldn t tell you about. During our lifetime it is very rare to actually know someone who has made a difference. I consider it both an honour and a privilege to have known Rinke as he was a person that I definitely put in this category. The dog world is all the richer for his massive contribution over decades, but all the poorer for his passing. Merrilyn Robb on behalf of the Dog Community of the NT 9
