2 Vale Mrs Mandy Hammett & Mr Riley Yuen Wing MBE October 2018 was a sad & trying time for the dog world in the NT with the passing of two stalwarts of our Association Mrs Mandy Hammett & Mr Riley Yuen Wing MBE. Born in Sydney, Mandy was a trained nurse & a Territorian by choice. She was a staunch supporter of Dogs NT who served on many committees & as a Ring Steward. Her love affair with her beloved Pharaoh Hounds began back in the 1980 s &, along with her husband Mel, they imported & bred some amazing dogs under their prefix Karnak. She was like no other she was a force of nature. Her knowledge & experience of all thing s dogs knew no bounds. Mandy mentored so many - young & old - in the arts of grooming, handling & was always so generous with her time. She stood up for what she believed in & although she was not afraid to call a spade a spade, she would be among the first to welcome those new to the dog world. She had so much experience coupled with a lifetime collection of hysterical Mandyisms' & she would sidle up to you with a smirk & a chuckle to share them. Fierce & loyal, gentle & kind her hands were laid upon many a pained neck & shoulders with miraculous healing. Riley was born in Pine Creek in the Northern Territory & was honoured with Life Membership by Dogs NT for his boundless work in the NT dog community. An Accountant by profession Riley was a former Obedience Judge & Instructor & he always made a point of personally presenting the Riley Wing Novice Obedience Perpetual Trophy at the Royal Darwin Show. Passionate about his beloved German Shepherd Dogs, he was instrumental in changing the law in the 1970 s to enable entire GSD s to be owned in NT - a Founder & Life Member of the GSD Club NT he was also honoured by the GSD Club SA Inc as their Inaugural Life Member. He had a remarkable life which included surviving the 1942 bombing of Darwin when he lost all his possessions (in 2011 he was introduced to former President Barack Obama at the WWII commemorations), he then lost everything again in Cyclone Tracy! Awarded an MBE for his tireless work within the community, Riley had Life Membership bestowed upon him by many grateful Clubs & Organisations including: the Chung Wah Society, Netball NT, the NT Football League & the Darwin Buffaloes Football Club. An incredible athlete & Coach, Riley was inducted into the SA Athletic League's Hall of Fame for winning the 1947 Bay Sheffield Gift foot race in record time! Regardless of whether you were a President or a first-time competitor this incredible Gentleman treated everyone with kindness & good manners. We will mourn & miss these humble, wise friends of the dog world & on behalf of all the Members of Dogs NT, we express our deepest sympathies to their family, loved ones & friends. 1

4 Vice President s Report The past few weeks have been a trying time for the Dog World in the Northern Territory. We have seen the passing of two much loved stalwart members of our association. Mandy Hammett, committee member, handler trainer, mentor to many and wife of our President Mel. Mandy passed away suddenly and her loss will be felt by many. Understandably Mel has taken an absence of leave from Council for the remained of this year, and therefore as Vice president I will be acting President in his absence. We also saw the passing of life member Riley Wing MBE. Riley was involved with dog sports in the N.T. during the 1970s and was a well-known Home-grown Territorian. On behalf of the association I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of both these wonderful dog people. We have also seen two very hardworking Dogs NT member move back to Melbourne. Barbara McVilly, our past Office Manager and Alan McVilly (NACA councillor) who were not only wonderful people but also a great asset to the N.T. Dog World. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours in freezing Melbourne. These recent events now mean that there are several vacancies on council. Council is now calling for Expressions of Interest for the position of two Councillors and also for the position of Secretary. Applicants must be full financial members of Dogs NT. Any members who is interested in these positions, please forward your Expression of Interest to the Dogs NT office by Monday 26th November As the year is drawing to a close, on behalf of council I would like to wish all members and their families a Merry Christmas and add a reminder than 2019 memberships are due now. The Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland informs the FCI members and contract partners that FCI kennel name RUNRUNRUN (owner: Mrs Regine Ripke) has been cancelled from the international FCI kennel name register. 7 Official Publication of Dogs NT ANKC Notices AMENDMENT TO BREED STANDARDS The ANKC Ltd Board resolved at their October 2018 Board meeting for all breed standard amendments to be made annually in January each year. Please note ANKC uses standards from either the country of development, the Kennel Club (UK), American Kennel Club (AKC) or the FCI. It must be pointed out that the majority of standards are not owned by Australia but by the country of origin or their governing body. The important thing that members must realise is that a standard cannot be altered as they are the property of those organizations. However, it is possible to change the standard in its entirety to another version, providing it has the support of a large majority of owners in Australia. As mentioned previously ANKC Ltd does not own a majority of the breed standards, so we are not able to make a change to a standard. Only the country or organisation that owns a standard may make changes and if they do so, then once they notify ANKC Ltd, these changes will be made annually in January. ANKC may not receive these notifications immediately but rather some months later from these organisations. LABRADOR RETRIEVER - AMENDMENT TO BREED STANDARD The National Breed Standards Coordination Group Chair, Mrs Marie Merchant, has been made aware that the Kennel Club (UK) has amended the breed standard for the Labrador Retriever. As a result, we are arranging for the standard on our website to be updated accordingly. In addition, the National Labrador Retriever Council has been requested to update the Breed Standard Extension and this will be made available from our website in due course. VISITING OVERSEAS JUDGES EVALUTION The ANKC Ltd Board resolved at their October 2018 Board meeting for the ANKC Ltd Visiting Overseas Judges Evaluation Procedure has been discontinued immediately.
