1 The Happy Heeler Central Florida Obedience Dog Club (352) Aug 1, 2010 Volume 1, Issue 8 Of Special Interest Lots of Wins! News from AKC National Pet Fire Safety Day From the President s Desk... I was thinking when we were planning our July menu how wonderful it is that our club members step up and volunteer right after I posted that I would bring sandwiches, I had 2 posts from members about what they could bring. We are a small club but everyone contributes above and beyond. We will name a nominating committee in September, so start thinking now about what officers we will want for the coming year. We have some very hard working officers that make my job so much easier. Thank you officers and board for working so well with me and each other. We will be looking forward to DOCOF coming up Labor Day weekend. Even though we are not fielding a team, I hope as many members as possible will come and will help. I will be stewarding for Orlando, I am sure many of you also belong to other clubs who will be entered and they can use help. Every club entered has to have someone to steward, to help with set up and take down. Also they will have a seminar Saturday if anyone can attend. We will be looking over the bylaws and standing rules and proposed changes next meeting, please bring a copy. I have not had a chance to work on them yet, will try to get to that and out to everyone early next month. Happy training everyone, looking forward to seeing you all the second Wednesday. Betty Contents From the President If I Didn t Have a Dog Meeting Minutes 2 News from AKC 3 Victory Corner 4 More Wins! 5 About Our Club 6 Upcoming Shows 6 If I Didn't Have a Dog... I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety. My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated. All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of hair. When the doorbell rings, it wouldn't sound like a kennel. When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through fuzzy bodies who beat me there. I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable. I would have money, & no guilt to go on a real vacation. I would not be on a first-name basis with 6 veterinarians, as I put their yet unborn Grandkids through college. The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: out, sit, down, come, no, stay, & leave it ALONE. My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers. I would not talk 'baby talk'. 'Eat your din din'. 'Yummy yummy for the tummy'.. My house would not look like a day care center, toys everywhere. My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash. I would no longer have to spell the words B-A-L-L,, W-A-L-K,, T-R-E-A-T,, O-U-T,, G-O,, R-I-D-E,, C-O-O-K-I-E. I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside. I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them down too much. I'd look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading 'mud' season. I would not have to answer the question 'Why do you have so many animals?' from people who will never have the joy in their lives of knowing they are loved unconditionally by someone as close to an angel as they will ever get. How EMPTY my life would be!!! )

3 3 News from AKC National Pet Fire Safety Day' Prevention Tips to Keep Pets from Starting Home Fires Monday, July 12, 2010 New Data Says Pets Start Nearly 1,000 Fires Each Year - New York July 12, 2010 An estimated 500,000 pets are affected annually by home fires, however, nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidentally started by the homeowners pets, according to a new data analysis by the National Fire Protection Association. New Data Says Pets Start Nearly 1,000 Fires Each Year - New York July 12, 2010 An estimated 500,000 pets are affected annually by home fires, however, nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidentally started by the homeowners pets, according to a new data analysis by the National Fire Protection Association. The American Kennel Club (AKC ) and ADT Security Services have joined forces once again for the third annual National Pet Fire Safety Day (July 15) to spread awareness about how pets can start home fires but more importantly how to prevent them. "Not many pet owners realize that their pet can actually be the cause of a devastating fire," said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "Simple preventative measures, such as flameless candles and stove knob covers, can mean the difference between life and death for your four-legged friends." Chris and Kay Wardlow of Oklahoma know that all too well. Their curious dog Lucy was home alone and spied a cake on the stove top. As Lucy tried to get a taste, her paw accidentally hit the stove knob and turned on the gas burner that was under the cake pan. Within minutes, the house was filled with smoke, triggering the Wardlow s ADT monitored smoke detector. Firefighters were called to the scene, the house was saved and Lucy was rescued. "Planning for unexpected emergencies like home fires and taking these precautions are an integral part of responsible pet ownership," Peterson said. AKC and ADT offer the following tips to educate pet owners on how to prevent your beloved pet from starting a fire, as well as how to keep your pets safe. Prevent your pet from starting fires - Extinguish open flames - Pets are generally curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles, or even a fire in your fireplace. Ensure your pet is not left unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving your home. Remove stove knobs - Be sure to remove stove knobs or protect them with covers before leaving the house. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a stove or cook top is the number one piece of equipment involved in your pet starting a fire. Invest in flameless candles These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your pet knocking over a candle. Cats are notorious for starting fires when their tails turn over lit candles. Beware of water bowls on wooden decks Do not leave a glass water bowl for your pet outside on a wooden deck. The sun s rays when filtered through the glass and water can actually heat up and ignite the wooden deck beneath it. Choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls instead. Keep your pets safe - Keep Pets Near Entrances When Away From Home Keep collars on pets and leashes at the ready in case firefighters need to rescue your pet. When leaving pets home alone, keep them in areas or rooms near entrances where firefighters can easily find them. Secure Young Pets - Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home such as in crates or behind baby gates in secure areas. Since Pets Left Alone Can t Escape a Burning Home Consider using monitored smoke detectors which are connected to a monitoring center so emergency responders can be contacted when you re not home. These systems provide an added layer of protection beyond battery-operated smoke alarms. Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets. Make sure to update the number of pets listed. In partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council, pet owners can obtain a free Pet Fire Safety Window Cling on National Pet Fire Safety Day, July 15th at local volunteer firehouses nationwide. For a list of locations, visit The clings are also free online at and will be available this September at your local AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day. This year s flagship event will be held in Raleigh on September 25th. Visit for more information on an event near you. Additionally the clings will be available at Meet the BreedsTM, October 16th and 17th at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. For more information, visit

4 4 THE HAPPY HEELER Victory Corner... Looking towards her AKC Grand Champion Title - Ann Shinkle s Dream (CH SW Charmstar Whisper A Dream) earned additional points towards the new AKC Grand Champion Title at the Lima, OH shows Also, she passed her second UKC Rally Obedience level II at the recent UKC Premier events in Indiana! A New Champion! Susan Handy s Rottweiler, Liesel (IVOSS VON TRAPP'S LIESEL), finished her breed championship in Orlando on June 26, 2010! Says Susan, Liesel had the single points necessary coming into the weekend but was lacking the two elusive majors.. In the past few years Orlando has barely put together majors( if at all) but I decided to take a chance and enter the show. When the counts were published there were enough bitches to make a 5 point major ( 3 points are necessary)!. Now I had some real worrying to do and worry I did. "Too many entries. She doesn t stand a chance on winning. Where did they all come from?" As it turned out luck was on our side along with having a great handler and of course, IMHO, the prettiest bitch. On Friday Mr David Bolus picked her for 4 points and on Saturday Mrs Lee Canalizo felt the same. Not too often, at least not in this breed, do you win back to backs! Thanks to Blase Pfefferkorn and Linda Whitney for their expertise in dog handling. My appreciation also goes out to all those CFODC members who supported Liesel at ringside. What a fan club!!!!! THANKS SO MUCH. - Susan First Rally Leg... and a Perfect Score! Chris Jeffrey s Parson Russell Terrier SLY (Friendships Pinball Wizard) achieved quite an accomplishment for himself at the Obedience Club of Daytona, Inc. show held in Deland on July 18. This was Sly s first time entered in Rally. Out of a class of 34 Novice B entries, he managed to get his first leg with a perfect score of 100 under judge Jane Mendleson. Chris says, Not bad for a little guy who has a hard time keeping his four feet on the ground! Photo Courtesy of Pix npages

5 5 More Wins Up! and way over the top! Deb Smith s Maxwell (JRT) won his Excellent A Standard (AX ) Title at DTCT in May, with a First Place. He also picked up his second Excellent A Jumpers with Weaves leg and Second Place. So he is closing in on AXJ too. Deb says, Max has had a fabulous year! He has only been competing in AKC since 2009 and has made it to Excellent A and begins Excellent B in August at Tailwaggers in West Palm. Max got his USDAA Masters Agility Dog (MAD) in March at Dog On It, his Masters Standard Title, his Masters Relay Title and his Jumpers Championship this year. He has had such a great year with DAM teams, Steeplechase and Grand Prix Tournament events that he is now eligible and taking Deb to the USDAA Nationals in Louisville KY as her reward for writing all those checks! They are also getting ready for AKC Nationals this year! Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Max JRT,MAD,SCh,JCh,RM,MSt,NAJ,NF,OA Photos Courtesy of Pix npages Deb s Burst (Border Collie) won his Open Fast Title and his Open Standard titles at Pals N Paws in March with a first place in Excellent Fast at DTCT in May. He has not had quite as good a year as Max, but he did get his USDAA Masters Gambler Title and his Agility Dog (AD) Title this season. He is hoping to accompany Deb and Max to USDAA Nationals maybe next year... We just finished DACOF at the end of June, good luck to all DOCOF competitors this year. Deb Peachy Keen s Silver Lining, BURST CGC,AD,AR,AS,GM,NA,NAJ, NF, OA, OF, STDs Dogs are our link to paradise. They don t know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring it was peace. - Milan Kundera If it be the chief point of friendship to comply with a friend s motions and inclinations, he possesses this in an eminent degree; he lies down when I set, and walks when I walk, which is more than many good friends can pretend to do. - Alexander Pope
