2 2 THE HAPPY HEELER From the President s Desk August 2015 Hi everyone, Isn t it amazing how we have come to rely so much on technology? We had lightning strike two weeks ago and it took out our modem, my computer, a power converter for one of my machines, our front gate and our security light. We had to buy a new computer, and finally got that up and running. Steve just got the gate working when a second lighting strike or power surge destroyed it again. We think a solar opener next time and that is on order, hopeful it will not be so vulnerable to lightning strikes. The phone and internet have been intermittent for 2 weeks, at one point Steve rigged up internet in my studio and we could only download from there. Then phones went out except in the studio We set up the answering machine in there so I would not miss any messages. Then we had to replace the modem again! Friday when I got back from the meeting with my guide dog puppy raisers we had no phone or internet. This is a serious problem for me since I would not want to miss a call if one of them has a problem with one of their puppies. Century Link finally came out over the weekend and we are up and running again. I was feeling so deprived without my and facebook. I have come to rely on the computer for so much, I almost never look up a phone number in the directory anymore, it is usually so much faster to look it up on the computer. What makes it so frustrating is that we are supposed to have a whole house surge protector, and in addition I had my stuff plugged into one of the more expensive surge protectors. I understand it was a wonderful weekend for some of our members at the Indian River trials, looking forward to hearing those brags. I also saw some of our members at the IPOC match, it was a good venue to practice our skills. I was told they will do another match October 2, if you are looking for a match this is one that is doable in an easy drive for most of us. I did go online before all this happened and updated our club information on the AKC website. I hope I updated everything, if anyone finds something that is not updated, please let me know. I used myself as the contact person, so one more reason I was worried when our internet and phones were not working right. Remember that we will be electing officers and please let us know if you are interested in either serving on the nomination committee or if you are willing to hold an office. Board members are for two years, and can serve consecutive terms, officers are for one year and again can serve consecutive terms. Countdown to DOCOF! Labor Day weekend is fast approaching and as always we are looking forward to competing in DOCOF. Fran has all the paperwork in and workers and exhibitors lined up. It will be an exciting weekend and we are looking forward to the event. And right after that our October trials. If you can steward please let Fran or Dea know, they need 3 to 4 stewards for each ring, and some of our members both steward and exhibit so if you cannot be there for both trials, your help would be welcome for however long you can be there. We will have 2 obedience and 2 Rally trials on Friday, so it will be a busy day for all. Stay dry and safe everyone. See you at the meeting August 18. Betty
3 3 Ode to Maxwell July 4, 2001 July 14, 2015 How you have saved me. How you brought me hope and fun and kept me in the game. How you were so great to train, travel, compete. Bring it you said and I will play with you. Ode to My Maxwell: July 14, 2015 here you lie in my lap. You have done wonders for me. Never ever let me down. Thank God for Maxwell! I know I said it so so many times. You came in the night, a refugee from Miami. He kills chickens and chases the horses, we are done with him. A sweet, loving, smart and most handsome little JRT dog. However, they sent along your soccer ball. And the game was on You played soccer, leapt to my chest and head checked to chase that ball around the yard with glee. Hmm, I wondered, what could we channel that into? Began obedience and then agility training, thinking.. surely this will help you find your forever home. Structure, discipline, treats and you responded 10 fold. You learned to watch, focus, hang, party, jump, weave and play with other dogs and enjoy the journey. Loved it! Tragedy struck my heart in 2004 and you were there to keep me on track. Let s play and keep training, I can do it for you and you were so right. So you became my dog and snuck into that heart spot.healing. Sitting at my computer waiting for the clock to tick to take you on our last ride. You cannot walk, you cannot play, but you are such a good boy. Potty when I take you outside and lick my legs until they are raw. I honor you, best boy and this is the hardest thing we have done together. Everyone who met you loved you, heart of purest gold. Took you to so many rescue events to demo, Is this boy up for adoption? Sorry, no, he is my heart dog, but see what rescue dogs can do?? Maxwell s Silver Hammer - The Bang Bang Boy July 4, 2001 July 14, 2015 Maxwellius Orleius. My partner, Gladiator and my Champion. Max, just Max and always My Max AX, AF, MXJ, CGC, SAM, MAD, Snooker Ch Bronze, Jumpers Ch Bronze, First dog to take me to USDAA Nationals, Max and Molly Wishing on a Star.. Letters that meant nothing to you and so much to me. So close, one Gamble Q short, but you are my champion always. Blessed that you played with me for all these years. Funny little dog, horrible structure, shortie, my 12 dog. Thanks for sleeping in my lap and licking me raw since you retired from the game. I miss you already. There is a hole in my world and in our pack. You loved your cookies and licked me until you slept. Loki, Goldie, Sugar, Boomer, Micah, Kee, Thor, Bootsie and you Grandmother Bootie are there at the bridge to keep you company until I join you. RIP my sweet little love until we meet at the bridge. All My LOVE ALWAYS. Your Mom. Our deepest sympathies to Deb Smith on the loss of her beloved Max.

FIRST AID KIT REMINDERS In case of an emergency, are you prepared to help your dog or cat until you can reach the veterinarian? To be on the safe side, stock up on these easy-to-find items. An ideal pet first aid kit includes items that you will be comfortable using and will cause no harm to your pet. Some pet parents who are trained in first aid may use more elaborate kits. However, for most people, the following list comprises an adequate first aid kit: Rolls of 2- and 3-inch gauze Gauze pads in a variety of sizes Adhesive for bandages Non-stick bandages Self-clinging wrap Antibiotic salve Hydrogen peroxide Alcohol and alcohol wipes Tweezers Scissors Diphenhydramine-containing antihistamine only given at your veterinarian's recommendation Eye wash or sterile water Eyedropper Cotton balls Paper towels Bath towels Plastic garbage bags Muzzle Veterinarian contact information, including emergency clinics First aid kit items should be stored in an easy-to-open, transportable box with a handle. A plastic tackle or toolbox works well. They have compartments or trays that can help organize the items. Clearly label the box "Pet First Aid Kit" and store it in an accessible area. If you often drive with your pet, prepare a duplicate kit to keep in your car. Mark the expiration date of first aid kit items that have a shelf life with a permanent pen and replace them before they expire. Marking them will serve as a reminder to check the date, as well as make them easy to spot. If an emergency should occur where there's more than one person on site, let the person most trained in first aid handle injuries. This is especially true if the pet's owner is too emotional to make decisions. Before and after you or anyone else administers first aid to a pet, wash your hands in hot water to avoid infection. Be very careful, any pet in pain will bite or scratch; even gentle pets will bite or scratch when in pain. Consider using a muzzle when dealing with wounded pets. Keep in mind that the purpose of administering first aid is to stabilize a pet until he or she can be brought to a veterinarian. If the incident occurs away from home (beyond traveling distance to your regular veterinarian), having contact information for a local emergency veterinary clinic with you can save your pet's life. Add your veterinarian and emergency clinic's address to your GPS, so you can easily access it in an emergency. Being prepared is the first step in first aid, so it's a good idea to take a pet first aid course. Some veterinarians offer first aid classes for their customers, so check with yours to see if they offer training. Or study emergency care from a book, video, app or ask your veterinarian for tips. Helpful Household Items In addition to your first aid kit, several household items can be helpful in case of emergency. A blanket or large towel can be used as a stretcher to transport an injured pet. Empty, cleaned, two-liter soda bottles can be filled with warm (not hot) or cold (not ice) water to warm a cold animal or cool an overheated animal. Cold water also helps to reduce swelling. If these extra items cannot fit into the first aid kit, keep them nearby for easy access. For more information, visit the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
