Please share this with as many people as you can. The report that was done certainly has done some damage to the AKC and those involved in Pure Bred dogs. Now is the time to step forward and take advantage of every opportunity to educate with knowledge not attitude. People can t even try to understand what they don t know. Response from the AKC: The AKC is extremely disappointed that The Today Show was given all of the information below but chose not to include any of it in their segment this morning. We met with the producers for an hour prior to the taped interview which also lasted nearly an hour and we provided them with supporting documentation, and they chose only to include less than 1 minute of airtime for AKC. They disregarded important facts that should have been told. In fact, we requested to receive a copy of the tape of the entire, unedited interview with Jeff Rossen so that we could show you all of the information we gave them, but their lawyers refused to provide the footage to us.

2 Here are some top facts that The Today Show didn't tell you: They didn't tell you that no other organization does more to protect dogs than the AKC and that "being the dog's champion" means, among other things, donating more than $24 million to canine health research, conducting kennel inspections, and offering more educational programs for responsible dog owners than any other organization. They didn't tell you that when an AKC inspector finds substandard kennel conditions they must immediately report it to the appropriate federal, state and local authorities to take action. They didn't tell you that, in many instances, the highly publicized raids for which animal rights groups take credit in the media have come about as a direct result of AKC's reporting to law enforcement. They didn't tell you that, as we explained to Jeff Rossen and his producers numerous times, there are no "AKC Registered Operations" or "AKC Registered Breeders" and that breeders use AKC services voluntarily. They didn t tell you that less than 5% of AKC s registration revenue comes from commercial breeders or that the AKC is a not-for-profit organization whose total revenues are less than the total marketing budget of the HSUS. They didn't tell you that AKC saw substandard breeders leave the registry in droves in the mid-1990's when we instituted an inspections program. We did it anyway, even though it affected our bottom line negatively, because it was the right thing to do for dogs. And, more breeders left when we began DNA testing. They didn't tell you that when AKC has concerns with legislation, it publicly puts legislative alerts on its website where anyone can learn about how a bill may potentially affect responsible breeders and dog owners' rights and not do anything to protect dogs. They didn't tell you that AKC works to ensure the enforcement of cruelty and neglect laws, as well as the provisions of the federal Animal Welfare Act. As a result, AKC has a productive working relationship with local animal controls, state and local law enforcement, state departments of agriculture throughout the country, as well as the USDA. hey didn't tell you that AKC is well respected by lawmakers who consider us credible experts on dog issues, and rely on our thoughtful and considered advice when it comes to legislation that will impact dogs and their breeders and owners. They didn t tell you that the purebred rescue groups they referenced are actually AKC breed parent club groups and affiliates that make up the largest dog rescue group network in the country. They didn't tell you that The Today Show's Natalie Morales made a TV public service announcement in conjunction with the Ad Council and the HSUS. May Book Review By Diana Werner Susan Orlean, Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend. New York: Simon and Schuster, $26.99, available at Pueblo library. For my generation, Rin Tin Tin has always lived at Fort Apache and has spent his time rescuing his little master Rusty from various predicaments. Sounds rather like Lassie, except that Rinty was a German Shepherd, right? Wrong! Lassie was fictional from the beginning--which was in Yorkshire, England, by the way, not Timmy's farm. Or Jeff's, for those of us who are that old. The original Rin Tin Tin was a real dog, and that really was his name. He was found on a World War I (yes, that's a ONE!) battlefield by Lee Duncan, who named him after a popular French fictional character, 2

3 managed to protect him through the rest of the war, and got him back to the United States. There, Duncan found a niche for himself and his dog in the nascent film industry, where Rin Tin Tin's acting skills, and Duncan's training skills, enabled the talented dog to play a variety of roles. German Shepherd Dogs became popular in films and television--his rival Strongheart is immortalized by a brand of dog food to this day--and Rinty was followed by a long like of descendents and unrelated stand-ins. Body doubles, I think they're called when they're humans. Duncan descendants Daphne Brodsgaard and Debra Hnath continued breeding the line in Oklahoma, and if you can find them it may yet be possible to have a Rin Tin Tin puppy. This one is for GSD lovers, fans of Old Hollywood and teleavision's Golden Age, and anyone who ever wanted their very own GSD because of Rin Tin Tin. Brags!!! Natalie Blood s Lab, Willow, had 9 puppies the middle of April. At the PPAC agility Marsha Littau s Beagle, Dolly and Border Colle, Jake qualified 9 out of 12 runs. Katie Pope s Aussie, Dixie finished her ASCA championship on Saturday at the ASCA show in Castle Rock. At the ASCA shows in May Barb Dixon s Aussie took High in Trial both days. This was Barb s first time in the ring. They also qualified in rally and placed in rally. At the same ASCA trial Pat Hill s Border Collie, Whisper, was High in Trial Other Breed and finished her ASCA Open Obedience title. Pat s Aussie, Tiva, earned a Novice rally leg and 4 th place. Diane Hughes Aussie, Rudy was High in Trial Rally. Maureen and Taylor Del Duca s Pharaoh Hound, Farley, took at Group 2 at the Seward County Kennel Club in April and a Group 2 at the Island Kennel Club. At the Tarry-All show Farley took a Group 2 on Saturday. Ann Haley s Chessie, Rio, went Select at the Tarry-All show on Saturday and Sunday. Milli Goodman and Beth Lenoski s Kuvasz, Hoot, was Best of Breed on Saturday at Tarry-All and on Sunday was Select. Barbara Curtis Chinese Crested, Ch Racetta The Contender at Calle Del was Select at Tarry-All on Saturday and on Sunday was Best of Breed. Katrina Davis Yorkie, Ivy Leagues Lover Boy was Winners at Tarry-All on Saturday. In Junior Showmanship at Tarry-All Hagen Davis was 4 th in the Open Intermediate class on Saturday and 3 rd on Sunday. Taylor Del Duca was 1 st on Sunday in Intermediate Junior Showmanship at Tarry-All. Michelle Short s Chihuahua, Classical Tebow Time Baby was Best of Winners on Saturday at Tarry-All. AKC News The Open Show regulations have been changed to make Open Show competition only available for FSS breed clubs. This includes FSS breeds eligible to compete In the Miscellaneous Class. This will go into effect January 1, 2014 and will be renamed the FSS Open Show. An AKC Rally National Championship has been created and will be held in the spring of 2014 in Harrisburg, Pa. This will be in conjunction with the National Obedience Championship and the National Agility Championship. The AKC will now award title to Wilderness Search and Rescue dogs. To earn this title dogs must have participated in a minimum of 5 actual wilderness SAR efforts and have been certified by an AKC recognized SAR certification organization. The title awarded will be Search and Rescue-W (SAR-W). This will be effective June 1 st, The Wirehaired Vizsla will be eligible to compete in the Sporting Group as of July 2, Any AKC club may be granted permission to hold agility trials provided the club holds the event for which it was originally formed at least once every two years. FSS breeds with AKC approved parent clubs may become licensed to hold agility trials. A club or association may be licensed to hold an agility trial within 100 miles of another club or association on the same date only in each instance it obtains the written permission of the club or association with the established date and submits the written permission along with its trial application. 3

Minutes from March meeting were reviewed and the following corrections were made: The nominating committee will put forth their recommendations for Board of Directors at the Apr meeting and nominations from the floor can be made at the May meeting. The minutes were approved with these amendments. Treasurer s Report: Report reviewed and accepted. There are no outstanding bills. Correspondence: none Committees: Training Center:The floors have been given a good cleaning. We discussed how to keep the facility clean and volunteers were asked to sign up for cleaning duties on a monthly basis. Renee Wolfe agreed to develop a written procedure so volunteers will know what and how to clean appropriately. Please contact Renee if you have any questions or concerns about this task. Show: The Southern Colorado Cluster is officially a 5 day show. The cluster committee will meet this Fri Apr 19 at 7PM at Renee Wolfe s home. The contract with the Fair Grounds is completed and signed, our deposit has been paid. The Sporting Dog Club of Colorado Springs is asking for volunteer help for their show on the first day of the Cluster. Contact Ann Haley or Karen Lamb if you can volunteer your time. Our club will hold an Owner-Handler competition on at least one of our 2 days. We discussed how to begin getting the word out about the Cluster. A motion passed for our Show Chairman to place an advertisement in some of the upcoming premium lists. Unfinished Business: Our club will join the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce for a fee of $200. Will Hughes continues to look into our possible joining the Latino Chamber of Commerce. New Business: Our participation in the PET EXPO this last Saturday was a big success. Thank you Marian and Caitlin Haddan for providing obedience and agility demonstrations. The club will also participate in the Mesa Vet Clinic s Open House on Apr 27. Club Elections: The nominating committee put forth 2 candidates for the BOD positions, Dee Dunlap and Lisa Golob. Nominations from the floor can be made at the May meeting. Membership: Second readings occurred for single memberships for Chea Brandt and Isabel Drysdale. Both were voted in as new members. Adjourned at 8:15 PM. 5 SCKC May 7, 2013 Board Meeting Called to order at 6:40 PM Present: Will Hughes, Renee wolfe, Allen Campbell, Pat Hill, Milli Goodmn, Lisa Golob Treasurer s report: reviewed and accepted. Only bills are utilities. Secretary s report: At the last general meeting it was mentioned that some members are not receiving The Barker. Milli will provide a current membership list at the next meeting and members will be asked to update any information to facilitate getting the newsletter via or standard mail. Correspondence: Jacob Barker, last years 4H Round Robin Junior Handler winner, has asked for our help in finding a judge for this year s events on July 13. He has been provided with a few names to contact. Committees: SHOW: The premium list is due in mid- June. Any trophy sponsorships need to be submitted ASAP to be included in the premium list. The next cluster committee meeting will be May 23. TRAINING CENTER: We discussed a proposal to redefine what and how many classes should be available to eligible members at no cost. It was noted that on several occasions, members have signed up for a 6 week course and then failed to complete the series of classes. The BOD will recommend the following proposal at the next general meeting; An eligible member (as defined in the Standing Rules) may register for one basic class per year at no cost. This includes Puppy, Basic Obedience, and Agility for Fun classes. Other classes will be available at a discounted price. Drop in classes will remain available at no cost. Old Business: Lisa has tried to follow up on the request for help with a hospice pet placement organization, she is awaiting a response from them. It was noted that the club has had a great response of new class registrations from people who learned about us at the recent Pet Expo. New Business: Renee requested that we purchase an industrial type mop and bucket for the training center. The BOD agreed and noted that we currently have no place to easily fill and empty a large bucket. Pueblo Animal Welfare has asked the club to participate at a shot clinic on Sept 28.
