2 Hello fellow LAPC members As many of you know, due to a recent fire, the Irvine Park was used as a staging site by the fire fighters; so our Young Bird show was postponed until the last Sunday of September. One would have expected the entries to be way down; however, they were only down a little. It was great to see a nice turnout under the circumstances. There was some good competition in several breeds. In the Squeaker class, there were some quite promising looking youngsters. In the lineup of the best of breeds, there were some very nice birds. Many were in good condition for this time of the year and the judges had their hands full trying to decide the top ten birds. First, we must thank all of those who were involved with setting up and tearing down the show; without your support, the show would just not happen. I want to also thank all of the exhibitors who participated, our super Chef for enduring the heat at the BBQ grill and delivering great food for everyone s enjoyment, the judges for their time and patience. A big thanks goes to the younger folks who not only participated in the show, but also helped with selling tickets for the raffle and much more. As always, we graciously acknowledge the great support we continue to receive from Pomona Feed and Leach Grain. This was the very first pigeon show my new wife attended. She was impressed by the various breeds that were shown. We even saw a number of passerby and even some park rangers stopping by to look at the birds. Preparation for our National is going full force. Fred Maenpa and Stan Makse hard work is steering the ship in the right direction gracefully. We are expecting one of the greatest shows ever with people attending from over 20 foreign countries. We might have a record number of entries. Our Website s Grand National page is up and contains all the details one needs to know including a downloadable pdf version of the unique Premium Book, entry form, layout plan, and much more. Be sure to send the website link to fanciers everywhere. I hope everyone had a good time this year. Hope to see you at the next meeting. I know everyone is getting ready for the larger shows this year including the National in January 2015 hosted by us. I wish you all success in the upcoming shows. Please remember to support our monthly meeting young bird table shows and our monthly raffles. Table show support has been great to this point, so lets not let that support slip. 3 It was a typical SoCal summer evening and a young couple with their two kids was on a leisurely stroll through the park just enjoying the sights and sounds before heading home for dinner. As they entered the far edge of the park they saw a good sized crowd gathered for what purpose they had no idea; but as they got ever closer they could see and hear mainly men of various ages talking in small groups but seemingly a part of a fairly large crowd. They could see these persons were dressed mostly casually but a few looked to be in dress cloths and some even in suits and ties. As they got closer they slowed their pace as now they could hear some speaking in rather loud voices and gesturing with their hands. Their curiosity was peaked but they knew a bit of caution might be best as it was getting more common in the neighborhood to see some gang activity - so they debated if to turn and walk back home now or proceed just a bit closer. As they debated they noted more and more vehicles entering the park parking area and people getting out then walking towards the groups to join in. Again they noted most were men of various ages. By now they were at the middle of the park and could see a few women in the groups plus a number of kids so they felt just a bit more at ease. They decided ok what lies ahead seems to be a harmless gathering of some sort so let s get closer and see what this is all about. As they got real close to the groups they noticed many wire cages and wood boxes sitting on the pavement by these small groups and some people bending over to it seemed to take a closer look at whatever was in those wire cages and wood boxes. They also noticed a number of those walking around were carrying wood boxes, they wondered if whatever was in the cages and boxes on the pavement were also in those carried boxes. By now they were completely at ease and were close enough to see what looked like pigeons of all colors in the wire cages and wood boxes. Also some in the groups held pigeons in their hands. Of course their kids saw the pigeons too, so we re very excited to take a closer look. As they mingled with the crowd they were astounded to see pigeons they never before knew existed, they saw some that stood tall with long feathers swopped up over their heads in a hood shape, they saw some with very long feathers on their feet that looked like dust mops, they saw some that had wing and back feathers that looked like someone had used a curling iron on those feathers. Needless to say they were thrilled to see so many different type of pigeons. Some of the crowd, seeing their kids delight offered to let their kids pet a pigeon or two; the young couple were delighted at such friendliness and enjoyed hearing their kids squeal with delight. They were further delighted so many in the groups were only to glad to explain what the various pigeons were named and a bit about how they came to look as they did. All in all they were very glad and they decided to investigate what was going on in the parking lot in their neighborhood park. That evening, they had not only found that first impressions can be totally wrong but had also learned about a hobby they did not know a thing about before, but now did. Soon the couple had to return home, but before leaving, asked how often they met there. They were told the second Thursday of each month. They vowed to return when they could, then thanked those they talked to for being so friendly and for introducing them and their kids to a world they did not know existed before tonight. The moral of the story is, when we gather in a group, non-pigeon people, more often than not, having no idea of what is going on can at first get a completely wrong impression. However, if we can show our kindness and helpful attitude towards them, they will mostly view us and the pigeon hobby in a much different light than they did before. That, my fellow LAPC member s, is a very good thing. P.3

4 Download the PB from our website; send it to friends Hello all. Here's the latest updated "tentative" layout for the upcoming Grand National. It shows the "planned" layout of the building and location of the large vendors, as of September. The table vendors can see where tables are set to be located, but they have not been assigned. We must wait until we receive the entries and know how many birds are entered in each breed. Once we have the bird count, we will be able to pencil in the breeds and locate the table vendors as close as possible to their breed locations. Once again, this is a work in progress; nothing can become final until we know how many birds we have, and will then work to locate the breeds as a group. We must take into consideration the judging areas that each breed will need and work around the layout of the building. We only have four surrounding walls and a total of eight quadrants within the building. Some clubs judge their birds in their holding cages, some near a wall with the judge facing the breeders, and some with the judges back to the breeders. We will do our best to place all the breeds in a location that will work best for them and also work well within layout of the showroom. Looking forward to January and working with the many clubs, fanciers, visitors, and vendors. See you at the 2015 Ontario Grand National. Fred Maenpa See Plan On Next Page P.4 January 29-31, 2015

People urged to come early and help set up the show. If not possible to come early then stay after completion of show and help with tear down. PLEASE! Website General agreement - Md Shaheed has done an outstanding job setting up our new web site and chat group. It was noted slow but steady progress with new people signing up and using the sites. Hopefully more will post pictures and make comments in the near future. Also, very positive comments about Chuck Zeller and Md Shaheed s work with our monthly Bulletin. The new look is outstanding and much appreciated. Fred Maenpa asked for an increase in the number of printed copies from 50 to 70. Left over copies to be given to prospective members, feed stores, pet shops, etc. Request granted. NPA Grand National Fred Maenpa reported not only is the Radisson sold out but only a few of our 200 designated room nights at the Double Tree by Hilton are available. Fred will ask for an increase to cover up coming reservations. National Premium Book: Bob Nolan reported that proofing and production delays have moved the delivery date of the premium book from Sept.10 to Sept.12. Thus book will not be available at the September meeting, but unless further delays occur, it will be at the Young Bird Show September 14 th. Bob reported Dennis Lawrence of Visalia (where the premium book is being printed) will see to it that all 600 copies are transported to the young bird show and turned over to Bob for distribution at various upcoming shows around the country. Motion made by Bob Nolan to pay gas expenses to Dennis Lawrence. Motion seconded by Dennis Weyrauch, motion passed. Dennis Weyrauch reported that ad sales for the premium book came in at about $6,000 an outstanding figure that will pay for printing, championship awards at the national, postage for mailing and other incidentals. Donovon White who did final proofing and put in many long hours was sent an LAPC shirt and a $100 check as a token of appreciation. Bob also noted the excellent work by Larry Hart and Doratha Connelly at the Purebred Pigeon in getting us a considerable saving on printing cost through their account with the printing firm. Larry did the leg work investigating for the best prices for the printing. Fred Maenpa asked Charlie Rowe if he could expand upon electronic national entry blank by adding a second page allowing exhibitors to go from 25 to 50 entries. Charlie said it could be done and he would look into it. Online entries will be available for the national. Fred noted that our national entry blank has been published in the latest Purebred Pigeon along with an article on the show by Bob Nolan. The next issue will also include the entry blank and final information on the show by Fred and Bob. Dennis Weyrauch to forward $500 in ad costs to Purebred Pigeon. P.6

7 Volaires For The National Charlie Rowe and George DelaNuez will soon begin putting the volarie cages and stands together. George reported that considerable interest in reserving cages had come in. Final decisions on who will get cages will be made after the October deadline. Bill Fobian Memorial Volaire Donovon White to put together a memorial volaire in honor of long time Pageant exhibitor Bill Fobian who recently passed away at age 80. Photos. of Bill and his birds and samples of the varieties he raised will be in the club s large volaires produced by Rich Barschdorf two years ago. Volaire for SCCPC Southern California Color Pigeon Club requested second LAPC large volarie for auction birds for their club. Bob Nolan pointed out that several of their members, notably Gary Romig and George De La Nuez, have helped Floor Layout Fred Maenpa passed out diagram of preliminary lay out for the national show room explaining what displays and vendors would go, where and why. Fred stressed this is preliminary and nothing set in stone at this point. Adjustments will depend on size of entry. Fred is contacting Fresno and Great Western show secretaries in regards to cages for the national if needed. Lennie Mefferd is contacting Mike Spencer and the Utah club as well. Charlie Rowe to check with Roseville Club about possible loan of cages. Art Display Stands Lynn Watson reported he would not be building them until close to show time as he had no place to store them. printing. Junior Auctions There will be an NPA junior auction handled by Keith Casteel and an LAPC junior auction handled by Lonny Mefferd. They will be looking for fanciers to donate birds to the junior auction. Breed Markers Fred displayed the 50-11x14 picture canvas breed markers for the national so people know where various breeds will be located in the show room. Very nice and will be used for future Pageants. Bob Nolan spoke about a large banner 4 ft x 9 ft being done by Australian John Hanson which has photos of the past seven nationals the LAPC has hosted. Also, posters being done with same pictures but a greatly reduced size. Fred had also requested a 1,000 stickers from Mr. Hanson with LAPC logo for distribution at National. All sent at no charge to the LAPC Championship Plaques Bob Nolan noted that two people had approached him at the last LAPC meeting about buying these tile plaques provided by Tim Taylor with Gary Romig art work on them. Bob said we wouldn t sell plaques with champion of Ontario National on them but removing the word champion and making them a soveniger plaque was possible. Discussion on how many to order took place finally decided to go with ten and to be sold at $25.00 each. Dennis Weyrauch to make purchase and bring to California with our championship plaques in Oct. from Modena Club show in Kansas. Discussion on people who had not paid for 2013 marked catalog ads. Decided bill must be paid in order for entry to be accepted at any LAPC sponsored event including the Ontario National. Respectfully submitted by Kathie Johnson P.7

The Helmet fancy and the LAPC lost a loyal supporter and a great guy. George Masucci announced that long time member Dick Krueger s wife Barbara was quite ill. A get well card was passed around for members to sign by Kathie Johnson. George also volunteered to put a copy of Wendell Levi s book The Pigeon in the evening raffle. Fred Maenpa reported he and Stan Makse had paid a visit to the Ontario hotels and that both the Radisson and Double Tree were sold out. Over 1,000 room nights booked. Fred had an over flow hotel the Holiday Inn willing to reserve rooms for us. Holiday Inn is connected to the Radisson and they will work together. Those making reservations at the Holiday Inn to be sure to tell them you are with the Grand National to get the $99 per night rate. Fred also reported that contract had been signed with the Ontario Convention Center to host the November 2015 Pageant in that facility. However, a smaller hall than the one used for the national will be contracted for. Banquet for the 2015 Pageant will be at the Radisson, not at the convention center. Bob Nolan happily reported the Premium Book for the national was done. He passed around two advance copies that had been over-nighted from the printer. They were received with great enthusiasm. Bob stated 500 copies would be brought to the Young Bird Show by Dennis Lawrence and Stan Fail from the printer in Visalia saving LAPC considerable shipping expenses. Bob will also distribute them at the Great Western, Salt Lake City Premier Show, Des Moines, and Louisville to people who have a genuine interest in showing at the National. Bob reminded everyone about the great work done by Chuck Zeller and Donovon White. Bob reminded fanciers that 10 tile plaques from Tim Taylor in Minnesota had been ordered with the wording Champion removed. They will be available for $25.00 each. Tee Shirts and polo shirts available with national art work by Diane Jacky available for $17 and $22 each. If paid for in advance your name can be put on shirts.
