Presidents Message. Hello again members and friends! The June meeting for the LAPC was very well attended and enjoyed by the membership. We had several visitors from out of the area and Frank Bailey dropped in from Washington state! It is always great visiting with with all the LAPC folks and visitors at the meeting. During the meeting the club Thanked Mark Sato for his tireless help on behalf of the club and his devotion to helping his son nick with his favorite hobby breeding and showing fancy pigeons. There was a special cake for Mark at the meeting as well as the monthly birthday cakes for the birthday members of that month. A big thanks goes to Bob and Kathy for handling these cakes and refreshments every month. Leon Stephens always brings the Doughnuts. Thanks Guys. All the board members have jobs and everyone helps out. It takes a total group effort. The club always appreciates Chuck Zeller s tireless work for the club and on a regular basis Fred Meanpa, Dennis Weyrauch and Bob Nolan step up and pick up the ball that I have dropped as President and I am always appreciative for their help! These guys and your hard working board of directors keep the ball moving for the club throughout the year! Fred Maenpa put on an interesting program on the Brunner Pouters at the June meeting. Fred did a great job explaining the fine points of this beautiful little pouter. After Fred's Program the club started the Table show which was one of the biggest in a while. There were many quality birds and the 2 judges Bill Griebel and myself picked a black muffed tumbler by Tom Evans best and a red Jacobin by Drew Lobinstein second in the fancy group. Kathy Johnson won the utility group with a Hungarian House pigeon and Nick Sato won the flying with a flying Birmingham Roller. It was nice to see the table show start the year off with such a nice group of birds shown by many exhibitors! After the table show the club held a nice raffle. Please support the monthly raffle and bring something in from your garage you don't need or maybe some plants or something from the garden. These make great raffle prizes. See you all at next month s LAPC meeting Mike CobbPresident LAPC Blowin in the wind (editor s comments). Hope all have gotten a copy of the Pageant of Pigeons 2011 Marked Catalog commemorating the clubs centennial anniversary. Donovon White as editor did an outstanding job not only in putting the catalog together but insuring the catalog was finished, printed and available on a timely bases. The latter is not an easy task as the editor must rely on specialty clubs getting their breeds show results and individual/club ads in as soon after the Pageant as possible.

Being just shy of 200 pages in full color guarantees this issue is sure to become a collector s item. It has oft been stated that no other pigeon club in the world puts out a show catalog/report like the LAPC s Pageant of Pigeons Marked Catalog. When an issue is in full color that insures it will be a home run. This year s catalog was printed and bound by Dan Milner and Dianna McKinsey who are not only top notch at their jobs but are local which allowed Rick Barker to pick up the catalogs from Dianna so the club did not have any shipping costs to get the catalogs delivered to the club. As a final note on the 2011 marked catalog. The LAPC greatly appreciates that Lennie Mefferd paid for an additional 100 copies of the catalog to be printed. His generosity means the total cost of each copy produced even thought the catalog is in color and expanded in page count was lowered substantially thus insuring the club makes a small profit on the catalogs. <<<Barbeque at last year s YB Show in full swing. Though the LAPC s Annual Young Bird Show is not till Sept. beings it has for years been held at the huge Irvine Regional Park in Orange CA this event has become a family affair with many fanciers wives and kids attending so it is not too early to start planning on being at the park Sunday Sept. 16 th. The Young Bird Show is the scene of many breed specialty clubs holding meets so get your breeds club to show at this once a year annual show set up among and under the many old oak trees in the park. Directions and more info on the YB Show will be in the August bulletin. I read about the voliere completion possibly coming back at the Pageant but seems like best dressed pigeon may be in the works too! Photos by: Junior member Nick Sato

Definitions to ponder.. COMMITTEE: A body that keeps minutes and wastes hours. EGOTIST: Someone who is usually me-deep in conversation. TOMORROW: One of the greatest labor saving devices of today. YAWN: An honest opinion openly expressed. The LAPC would like to thank LAPC board member/npa Dist. 10 Director Lennie Mefferd for paying for a News of the Los Angeles Pigeon Club page in each issue of the NPA Quarterly Magazine. Bob Nolan has consented to keep the page updated with pertinent LAPC news and interesting photos. I am sorry to report the pigeon show at the Del Mar Fair has reached a new low. A total entry of about 200 birds down about 150 birds from last year. This lack of interest and effort on the part of fanciers is rather discouraging. The fair people unlike Pomona have done everything to try to make this show attractive. The best pay back of any pigeon show in America $7.00 for a first, $6.00 for a second and $5.00 for a third). Entry fee of $2.00 makes this a money making show. A top judge - John Heppner and a wonderful building and cages (pictured). If the fancy doesn't wake up soon this grand old show will go the way of the Pomona Fair pigeon dept and go out of existence. It is a great fair, not so commercial as the Orange County or Pomona Fairs with more emphasize on agriculture.

<<< PHOTO>> Our observant recording secretary Robin Schindler noted the support that Mark Sato has given his son Nick for the past three years. She suggested that he be honored at the Fathers Day June meeting. Accordingly refreshment chairperson Kathie Johnson ordered a special cake made up for Mark and enjoyed by all at the June meeting. Mark has driven Nick thousands of miles over the past few years to club meetings, specialty club shows and pigeon fancier's homes. He also made the long drive 3 times recently to the Del Mar Fair. Mark is becoming a fixure at our LAPC meetings and events. We salute him for his support of his son's interest in pigeons. More young people should be so lucky to have such supportive parents. It should also be mention that Nick's mother is quite supportive of the hobby as well and does the cleaning of the lofts...wow! <<<<Bob Nolan was recognized for his contributions to the LAPC with a special birthday cake at the June meeting. Pouters were the featured bird at the June L APC meeting. Fred Maenpa one of the major supporters of the breed gave a wonderfully informative talk on the breed. Fred used his public speaking skills honed by years as a high school teacher to instruct the audience in what to look for in a good Brunner Pouter. Note banners in the background.

All good teachers and public speakers know the importance of visual aids. Here Fred Maenpa shows a beautiful painting of a Brunner Pouter. Fred used the illustration to help teach the audience what to look for in a good Brunner Pouter. June kicked off our young bird table show season. Here judges Bill Griebel (far left) and Mike Cobb (far right) presented new club medallions to winners Tom Evans holding his black Muff Tumbler and Drew Lobenstein holding his 2nd place red Jacobin. These were the winners in the fancy bird division. A splendid turnout of 26 young birds were in competition. <<<Here Bill Griebel is presenting junior member Nick Sato his medallion for best Flying Breed on a Birmingham Roller and Mike Cobb congratulating Kathie Johnson on winning the best utility bird with a splashed Giant Hungarian House Pigeon. Leon Stephens and Charlie Rowe are in charge of staging the table shows in Entry fee is now only $1.00 per bird so be sure to bring some youngsters for the July show. President Mike Cobb with microphone in hand calling for a treasurer's report while Dennis Weyrauch looks frantically thru his brief case to find it. Meanwhile Robin Schindler takes minutes and Fred Manepa (far left) tries to look busy.

The June meeting had a splendid turnout of around 50 pigeon fanciers. Here the early arrivers are looking thru their newly arrived marked catalogs. The catalogs sold very well with close to 30 being sold. A long distance visitor, Frank Bailey, from Washington State was in attendance and can e seen in the front row (black shirt) talking to Leon Stephens. Month in and month out buddies Ron Zottneck (left) and Dennis Rogers run our raffle. Ron draws the tickets and Dennis reads the numbers and furnishes the humorous commentary. Thanks guys you are appreciated. A get-together at Bill Griebel's house prior to the LAPC meeting. L TO R: Frank Bailey, George De La Nuez, Steve Ball, Bill Griebel and Arnold Chaney. Mike Cobb taking the photo. On the new myfamily United Color Pigeon site Bill said they got together about 3:00 then headed to the LAPC meeting about 6:30. The new Color Pigeon site is great even for those who raise other breeds. Lots of genetic info and photos. Contact Frank Bailey for an invite. frankbailey@frontier.com

They Walk Among Us!! I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call center. One day I got a call from an individual who asked what hours the call center was open. I told him, 'The number you dialed is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.' He responded, 'Is that Eastern or Pacific time?' Wanting to end the call quickly, I said, 'Uh, Pacific.'

Rick Barker - Jun 25, 2012 Members of the LAPC will recall a beautiful woman that was a sales rep for the Seed Factory. Lori Wilson has been fighting a battle with non- Hodgkins Lymphoma for the last three years. Her fight ended this afternoon. The last time many of you saw Lori was at the Pageant. While this was the first year in many years there was not a Seed Factory booth at the show, she still wanted to come and viisit with friends. That very Saturday she had a tough time with chemo, but knew in her heart this was her last show. She had to be there to visit with special people...two of her favorites, were Monica and Dennis Soares. Lori had not yet turned 50. Those of you that had the pleasure to know her, knew that her beauty was just not skin deep. Lori had a special quality that endeared her to many. Needless to say, my heart and many of yours is breaking at this news. Robert Bob It was shocking news from Rick Barker that reached the LAPC family on June 24th. The death of 49 year old Lori Wilson although not unexpected due to her long battle with cancer it still came as a sad shock. Rick paid a wonderful tribute to her elsewhere on this page but I would like to add a few thoughts. Lori was a wonderful supporter of the club's efforts to publish the 100 year anniversary book. She not only saw to it that her company (Volkman Seed) took a full page ad she also purchased a copy of the book as well. She saved the LAPC hundreds of dollars in shipping charges

when she arranged for one of her company trucks to bring the books to Southern California from the printer in Visalia, Calif. Lori also was the driving force behind her company donating feed to the LAPC summer lawn show and also the Super Raffle. Lori and her company had a booth for several years at the Pageant and although not on the scale of Leach Feed and Kenny Davis's Pomona Feed, Volkmann Seed Company's support was certainly appreciated. It is hard to believe that she is gone at such a young age. Many LAPC members saw her and spoke with her at Dennis Soares' funeral. She will be dearly missed. Rest in peace dear one. Book Review The West of England Tumbler in America By: Robert Bob Nolan So seldom in the pigeon world do we have a book published by a legitimate authority on a specific breed. When this does happen it needs to be announced, virtually shouted from the rooftops. There are many general books on pigeons on the market today. The most recent of note are SUPERDOVE by Courtney Humphries and PIGEONS by Andrew Blechman. These books are aimed at the initiated, the layman, those unfamiliar with pigeons. These are welcome additions to general pigeon literature but provide little new information for the erudite pigeon fancier. A book like Chuck Zeller s THE WEST OF ENGLAND TUMBLER IN AMERICA is hardily welcomed because it offers information for the expert in the field of fancy and flying pigeons. It provides details on the history, color breeding, famous West fanciers and the evolution of the West of England Tumbler. It has information that needed to be recorded before the author and his contemporaries pass away. Hardbound, with a beautiful color cover of a blue velvet baldhead West this book is a must not only for West of England fanciers and pigeon book collectors but all those interested in seeing the evolution of the breed. Zeller is uniquely qualified to write such a book as his experience with the breed goes back to He has seen firsthand the changes in the breed, the formation of it s specialty club and has firsthand knowledge of the leading fanciers of the past 50 years. He has no axe

to grind and treats the fanciers and the story of the breed s growth unbiasly. The two hundred page book is illustrated profusely with color illustrations by some of the world s best photographers and pigeon artists. Names and the works of Thomas Hellmann, Layne Gardner, George DelaNuz, Diane Jacky and the classic English artists of the last century can be found among the book s pages. Zeller has included articles by current master breeders: Brian McCormick, Terry Bishop and Bob Christman to mention just a few who have added additional advice and views on the breed. Nothing of this scope has ever been written on the breed before. Over two years of editing and fine tuning have gone into preparing this work for publication. Zeller s good friend Rick Barker deserves credit for assisting in bringig this book to publication in a timely fashion. The West of England s elevation to be one of the most popular show birds over the last 50 years is a story worth telling accurately and recording for posterity which Zeller has done so expertly. Copies are available for $50 postage paid by writing Chuck Zeller at: 622 Jupiter Rd. Weaverville, North Carolina They Walk Among Us and Many Work Retail. I walked into a Starbucks with a buy-one-get- one-free coupon for a Grande Latte. I handed it to the girl and she looked over at a little chalkboard that said 'buy oneget one free.' 'They're already buy-one-get-one-free, ' she said, 'so I guess they're both free'. She handed me my free Lattes and I walked out the door.
