Hope to See You There! History of July 4th Independence Day At the time of the signing the US consisted of 13 colonies under the rule of England s King George III. Leading up to the signing, there had been growing unrest in the colonies surrounding the taxes that colonists were required to pay to England. The major objection was Taxation without Representation -- the colonists had no say in the decisions of English Parliament. Rather than negotiating, King George sent extra troops to the colonies to help control any rebellion that might be arising. The following timeline will give you a crash course in the history that lead to the signing of the Declaration of Independence and America s break from British rule The 13 colonies send delegates to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to form the First Continental Congress. While unrest was brewing, the colonies were far from ready to declare war. April King George s troops advance on Concord, Massachusetts, prompting Paul Revere s midnight ride that sounded the alarm The British are coming, the British are coming. The subsequent battle of Concord, famous for being the shot heard round the world, would mark the unofficial beginning of the American Revolution. (Continued on Page 3) Copyright 2010 Peel, Inc. 3 History of July 4th - (Continued from Cover Page) May After nearly a year of trying to work our their differences with England, the colonies again send delegates to the Second Continental Congress. June Admitting that their efforts were hopeless, a committee was formed to compose the formal Declaration of Independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. June 28, Jefferson presents the first draft of the declaration to congress. July 4, After various changes to Jefferson s original draft, a vote was taken late in the afternoon of July 4th. Of the 13 colonies, 9 voted in favor of the Declaration; 2, Pennsylvania and South Carolina voted No; Delaware was undecided and New York abstained. John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. It is said that he signed his name with a great flourish so King George can read that without spectacles! July 6, The Pennsylvania Evening Post is the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence. July 8, The first public reading of the declaration takes place in Philadelphia s Independence Square. The bell in Independence Hall, then known as the Province Bell would later be renamed the Liberty Bell after its inscription - Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants Thereof. August The task begun on July 4, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, was not actually completed until August. Nonetheless, the 4th of July has been accepted as the official anniversary of United States independence from Britain. July 4, The first Independence Day celebration takes place. It s interesting to speculate what those first 4th festivities were like. By the early 1800s the traditions of parades, picnics, and fireworks were firmly established as part of American Independence Day culture. May Freedom Always Ring READY OR NOT... WE ARE. 4 Light the Candles Special birthday wishes are sent to Sarah East. Sarah is the beautiful daughter of Susan East. She will be celebrating her 14th birthday on July 5th. Happy Birthday from mom and all your EV friends! Stork Report! Kirdes and Jill Schubert in EVE are fixing to become (drum roll please!) first time grandparents!! Get ready for the purse size picture album to be pulled out every given chance! Their daughter, Heather and her hubby Brad are expecting a baby girl on September 21st not even here yet and she already has Grandpa right where she wants him). Heather is now a paramedic and Brad is a Sheriff for Montgomery County. Jill said for God to please help this baby when she gets ready to date. Between Dad the sheriff and grandpa, a guy doesn t have a chance!!! Jill is all smiles because as soon as Heather goes back to work when the baby is around 3 months old, she gets to be the official full time baby sitter. Congratulations to all!!! Events Organizer EV is in deperate need of an Events Organizer. The person that previously held this position (and did a wonderful job, I might add) unfortunately had to relocate to another state. This position needs to be filled immediately. Without this chairperson, EV will not be able to have events throughout the year. If you are interested please give Norman Goad a call at Dog News! If you have ever taken your dog to a dog park you know how much fun they are for people and dogs too. You probably also know there is not one in our neck of the woods if you live in far NW Houston. The nearest off leash public dog park is Bill Archer Park in the Bear Creek Park area on Hwy 6 near I-10. If you have not ever been to a dog park you may soon get a chance to do so here in our own back yard. The Houston Dog Park Association (HDPA) is proud to be partnering with sponsor Barks 5th Avenue to bring a public dog park to far NW Houston. Land next to the Barks 5th Avenue facility on 1960 near Jones Rd. will be donated by the land owner to HDPA to build a public dog park on. HDPA will design, construct and manage the dog park. The plan is in preliminary stages now and more details will be shared at the Kick Off and Fund Raising event to be held October 2nd in the parking lot of Barks 5th Avenue at FM 1960 West, Houston, TX Heard and Overheard We will be announcing the event details on our web site soon but you can mark your calendar for Oct. 2nd now. Leashed pets will be invited to the event and we ll have lots of fun for people and doggies including a dog and car wash, frisbee dog demonstrations, doggie costume contest, and lots of local vendor tables with freebies and goodies to give away and win. We are seeking vendors and will also need volunteers to help setup and work at the event from washing cars and dogs to entertainment and set up/clean up. HDPA is also seeking sponsors and vendors as well as entertainment for the event, contact HDPA to offer your services or reserve your space. You can donate to the NW area dog park construction fund right now on our web site under Programs via Paypal or you can donate at the event. Dog park donations are tax deductible. HDPA has already raised over $1000 for the NW area dog park. HDPA will be forming a Friends of the NW Area Dog Park Committee to help us plan and develop this new dog park and the event and we need volunteers. If you d like to help us make this dream a reality for NW Houston dog owners tiffany@houstondogpark.org to learn how you can help. HDPA is a 501c3 non-profit volunteer organization that advocates for dog parks and supports dog park patrons through education. Learn more about HDPA, how you can help, and what HDPA is doing to support dog parks all around Houston on our web site. 5 AgAinst the Wind-Escaping nature s fury Did you ever wish you could start a day over? the kind of day where it starts out like a light rain shower with the sun peeking through, and ends with a dark, heavy flood? When i first heard the sound, i was searching in the dark for matches to light a candle. Our power had gone out due to the storm raging that night. the sound startled me and i jumped as i heard it a second time. this time, i knew exactly what that sound was. it was the sound of my only shade tree falling over. it landed on my deck and filled the whole back yard. My heart sank. this could not be happening to Me!. As i opened the door, their it lay, completely uprooted. i had refused to greatly thin the canopy of this top heavy tree because it had provided many a play day in the shade for my children, and kept the swing set cool during even the hottest months. it was still storming for two days following, so with our emergency jobs i did not have a chance to remove it until 4 days later. While i was cleaning up debris of the tree and carrying a large branch to the truck, i knew what i had done. if i had only thinned out this tree, it would have had a much greater chance of withstanding that storm. sometimes, we overlook things that are precious to us until it is too late, even when we have the knowledge to prevent it from happening. early June is the time to trim trees in your yard before storms threaten our area. We should make our trees more wind resistant by removing diseased and damaged limbs, And strategically remove limbs throughout the canopy. this provides less wind resistance in a storm when the wind can blow through the tree. Keep overhanging branches on homes to a minimum, and check for trees entangled in power lines. native trees such as Live Oak, Cypress, and red Maple do survive hurricanes better than non- natives. in high winds, Palms will bend, but not always break. since they originated in the tropics and sub-tropics, their trunks have adapted to hurricanes. Although fronds will be damaged in a storm, most Palms including Chinese fan, Majesty, and Pygmy Dates will recover. Queen Palms are the exception due to very low wind tolerance. We all live extremely busy lives out here, and when storms approach it could be too late to thin out or take care of that dead tree that has been there for a while take some time to care for your trees and they will thank you in many ways. When your dog suffers from separation anxiety, leaving the house can be just as stressful for you as it is for him. No one likes to see a beloved pet upset plus, any time away from home might be spent worrying what kind of mess awaits your return. Will your pooch tear up the sofa? Chew the walls? Pee on the carpet? Shake, drool and bark for hours? Overcoming disorders like separation anxiety takes time, patience and consistency, but it can be done! Don t wait any longer: take control of your dog s happiness and your own just in time for summer travel season. Follow the advice of ASPCA animal behaviorists, and next time you drop off Fido at a friend s house or the boarding kennel, you ll feel sweet relief knowing that you miss him more than he misses you. Doctor Knows Best - The first step in tackling behavior issues is to rule out any underlying medical problems that might be causing your pet s behavior. For example, if your pet is urinating in the house, he might be suffering from a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, diabetes or kidney disease. Keep It Mellow - All greetings hellos and goodbyes should be conducted in a very calm manner. When saying goodbye, just give your dog a pat on the head, say goodbye and leave. Similarly, when arriving home, say hello to your dog and then don t pay any more attention to him until he s calm and relaxed. Dogs Need Jobs - Providing lots of physical and mental stimulation is a vital part of treating many behavior problems, especially those involving anxiety. Exercise can enrich your dog s life, decrease stress and provide appropriate outlets for normal behavior. Plus, a tired dog doesn t have much excess energy to burn when he s left alone! Splash Day! The 2009 Divisional Champion swim team, our very own Marlins, will be hosting the events. Splash Day will begin at the club house/ pool area right after the parade. Pool tags are not required. Some good tasting brisket, sausage, hot-dogs and fixings will be for sale to help fill that empty spot in your tummy. To go plates will be available. Popcorn, popsicles, sodas, bottled water, and nachos, etc. will also be for sale. In addition to lip smacking good food, we will have a tattoo booth, face painting, bingo, and a raffle. Our Marlins have planned a hula hoop contest, cake walk, water balloon toss, and donut eating on a string contest. Sounds like a lot of fun! All the proceeds benefit the Marlin Swim Team! Don't sit home when all this fun is planned, come and join us. Hope to see you there! **Just a note to those who have crafts to sell...there is a craft show later in the year. We ask you to bring your things to that event and not to the 4th of July event. Thank you Echo - July 2010 Copyright 2010 Peel, Inc.

7 June Yard of the Month June s Yard of the Month goes to Chad and Kristi Wimberly at Wallach. The Wimberly s moved in about a year ago and have been reconstructing their yard ever since. As you drive by, you will see a beautiful green yard and lots of color in the bed. When asked who is responsible for the very well manicured yard, Chad gave Kristi all the credit. Not only will you see Kristi out there almost every evening watering, mowing, or just giving her flowers some TLC, but you will see her three sons, Aaron, Collin, and Wyatt, helping her as well. For all their hard work, the Wimberly s receiver a $25 gift card from Lowes.
