1 HANAHAN VETERINARY CLINIC NEWSLETTER JUNE & JULY 2018 It s been a while since our last newsletter, and what a better time to start again then summer! The summer is a busy time for many because school is out and everyone wants to enjoy this beautiful weather. Many of us will travel with our furry family members, while others will elect to board or hire a pet sitter. There are important things to remember as we get ready to travel and enjoy the many events happening. This newsletter will explore summer safety tips that can help prevent injury. Boarding As many of you have heard, as of January 1 st of this year, we no longer board here. It was a difficult decision but due to staff changes and the size of our boarding facility, we felt the best decision was to discontinue boarding. Provided below is some information on local boarding facilities and what to look for when choosing one. Here are a few things to consider: What vaccines are required to board your pet? For dogs, always make sure they require Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella (kennel cough) ; for cats they should require Rabies and FVRCP, Leukemia is recommended if the cats are interacting or sharing bowls. Does the facility look and smell clean? Is a comfortable temperature maintained? Make sure there is AC during the warmer months. Is there sufficient light and ventilation? Are there indoor/outdoor kennel runs? Is there appropriate shelter from weather?

2 How often are pets fed and walked? Is there exercise or play time? Is the staff knowledgeable and caring? What happens if there is an emergency? What veterinary clinic is the kennel affiliated with? Are the cats kept separate from the dogs? Is there enough space for the pet to move around and be comfortable? Is the facility able to accommodate feeding special diets and giving medications? How much space is between the litter box and food bowls for cats? What does the pet sleep and lay on, is bedding provided? The asphalt and sand can get extremely hot very quickly, causing painful burns. Below is a temperature guide with a few tips to make Fido s experience safe and enjoyable. Many of us will travel with our furry companions this summer. It s crucial to remember how fast a vehicle gets hot, even on cooler days. A dog s body temperature naturally is higher than a human s.

3 This means they are more sensitive to heat and can have a heat stroke quickly. It is NEVER ok to leave your dog in the vehicle without air conditioning, even if your car windows are down. Always report an animal or child being left in a vehicle without air conditioning. from the noise of fireworks or thunderstorms, contact our office regarding medication to help ease the anxiety. Listed below are some firework safety tips and remember that more pets get lost on July 4 th than any other holiday. Summer comes with many holiday celebrations and cookouts. Be mindful of feeding table scraps and food left out that your pet can get to. For example, a corn cob or rib bone that s ingested can cause a bowel obstruction. Spicy and sweet foods can cause pancreatitis or other gastrointestinal issues. Fireworks are common during summer events and July 4th. While most of us enjoy the beautiful display, it can be scary for many pets. 4 Word Find Z F L C R A W S U M M E R Y We would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to our yard sale. The generosity that we received with donations was overwhelming. The yard sale was a huge success and over $750 was raised. We would like to send out a special thank you to Mickey Tucker and Sandra Geiger. They took time out of their busy schedule to volunteer and promote the yard sale. All proceeds from the yard sale went to the AVMF, American Veterinary Medical Fund, which helps animals in need. Another special thank you sent out to Scott Adams for coordinating the donation of remaining items to a local homeless shelter.
