1 JUNE 2018 NEWSLETTER From the Chair: This month we concentrate on a human health issue: the dangers of letting your dog lick your face or worse still your mouth! Kissing is part of our human culture and happens in all forms and descriptions and is, mostly, acceptable to us. However, humans do not use their noses, lips and tongues to openly and publicly explore the nether regions of each other, the highly decorated lampposts or to sample waste matter.!!! The germs (that is the bacteria in the saliva with Capnacytophagia canimorsus being the deadliest), and the viruses inhaled & or licked by your dog leave a residue around the muzzle as well as in the mouth and can therefor be easily transmitted. Some of these germs cause human illness and in a worst-case scenario can cause gangrene, septic shock and even death. Some examples are Leptospirosis, Giardia, E Coli and Rabies with hookworm & roundworms also being problematic. John Oxford, a Professor of Virology and Bacteriology at Queen Mary University in London, explained in his one article that the dogs mouth is full of bacteria & no matter how many times his teeth may get cleaned those germs remain - and they are transferable!
