Choosing Your New Puppy Whether you decide to buy your new puppy from a breeder or adopt it from a rescue center, bringing a pup into the family is an important decision to make. A puppy grows into a dog and a dog is for life. You need to make sure that you choose the right kind of dog for you and your lifestyle as well as that of your family. First of all, consider your living arrangements. If you are a city apartment dweller, it is clearly not a good idea to choose a large dog that needs a lot of exercise in the great outdoors unless you are prepared to spend a great deal of your time driving out to the country and/or the beach. Similarly, if you do not have a lot of time to spare you need to select a reasonably low-maintenance pooch although, of course, you should always ensure that you give your pet the care and attention it needs or hire someone to do so. Dogs, in particular, can become attached to their owners provided they are treated with enough love and kindness and often even when they are not. That care will include some necessary expenses such as: Food Collar/harness and leash Grooming tools and supplies
Bed and toys Vaccinations Veterinary care Dog walker/dog day care if necessary You also need to take into account such factors as children or existing pets. Your new pup will have to learn to socialize with the other members of your family and you can help that process by deciding upon a dog that will fit in with them rather than the other way round. A boisterous puppy can upset an older dog or cat that has long since grown out of the urge to play. If that same puppy is highly strung or prone to snapping, as some breeds are, then it is also unlikely to be a good choice for a family that has young children among its members. Breeds that are known to be particularly good with children include: Bulldog Beagle Bull Terrier Collie Newfoundland Golden Retriever Labrador Retriever And, of course, the lovable mutt available at your local rescue center! If you do adopt a puppy from a rescue center then staff there will be able to advise you as to the best choice given your lifestyle. No responsible rescue center will place a puppy with a household it considers inappropriate for that dog as neither pup nor owner will thrive.
Taking Care of the Basics Once you have made your choice and brought your new pup home, it s time to take care of the basics. Feeding It is important to choose the right kind of food to suit your new puppy. The best option is a dry food intended for puppies. Do not be tempted to buy a cheap brand or generic puppy food. They may be cheaper but they are correspondingly lower in vital nutrients. Brand name food is best as it contains the correct levels of protein and vitamins. People often do not realize that high protein levels and too many vitamins can actually be harmful to a puppy. Overfeeding and over supplementation are factors that contribute to conditions such as hip dysphasia. If you have chosen a large breed puppy then you should buy the correct large breed puppy food which is specifically tailored for your larger pup.
Start off by feeding your puppy three times a day and after ten to twelve weeks of age, reduce this to twice a day. Only allow your puppy to eat for fifteen minutes and then take away its bowl as this discourages overeating. Puppies can easily become overweight and this is, again, bad for their overall health and well being. If you have more than one puppy or dog then always make sure food is given in separate bowls. This will prevent fights occurring and teach your pup or puppies that food is plentiful which will prevent them developing food-guarding behavior. Do not feed your new pup with your own food as this will not be nutritionally balanced or adequate for its needs. You can offer treats such as milk bone biscuits now and again but not too often as otherwise your pup will come to expect them and will be in danger of taking in too many calories through constant snacking. You should always have a supply of fresh, clean water that your puppy can access undisturbed. In hot weather, make sure this water is placed in a cool, shady spot and top it up regularly as pups can quickly become dehydrated. Vaccinating Your Puppy
At some point between six and sixteen weeks of age, puppies lose the disease protection they received from their mother s antibodies and are then capable of forming their own immunity to diseases. This is why your puppy should receive its first shot between six to eight weeks of age. This first shot is the distemper shot which is a multi-vaccine against distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus. This shot should be given every three weeks and is a series of four shots. The next important vaccine your pup receives is the rabies vaccine if you live in a country where this is routinely given. Your pup will receive the rabies vaccine between twelve to sixteen weeks of age with yearly boosters. Another vaccine your pup may receive it the bordetella pertussis vaccine. This vaccine is mainly for animals that are going to be boarded for any reason and protects against "Kennel Cough" which is a severe but rarely fatal respiratory disease. Worming Your Puppy Regular worming is important to your puppy s health as well as your own. There are a number of different worms your puppy can get, with one of the main ones being the heartworm. These worms are transported by mosquitoes and to protect your puppy against them it is a good idea to give it Heartgard once a month. Heartgard is a meaty chewable tablet that helps to prevent heartworms. As soon as your pup gets their first shots you should start them on heartworm prevention, although their test doesn't have to be done until they're six months old. After the first test you should get them done annually even if you use heartworm prevention.
Other common worms are hookworms, roundworms, and the most common, tapeworms. The best way to check if your puppy has worms is to look at their belly. If their belly seems larger than a normal puppy belly then you need to check it you re your vet can check for worms by testing your puppy s feces. He or she can then recommend a suitable dewormer as well as a regimen to keep your puppy worm-free in future. House Training Your Puppy Consistency and patience are key to successful house training. Puppies have a strong instinct to avoid soiling their own area and this natural urge for cleanliness makes house training fairly easy. You can begin house training your puppy at any time, but it s best to wait until after five weeks of age. Remaining calm, consistent and patient while doing so
will make all the difference between a happy, cooperative pet and a problematic one later on. To begin house training, take your puppy outside or to its appropriate toilet spot immediately after it wakes up in the morning or from a nap. If you take your pup outside, always put it on the leash. It s a good idea to also do so after your puppy has become over-excited, drinks a lot of water, chews for a long time on a toy, or if your pup starts sniffing around the house for a good spot. Other signs that it needs to go include circling and whining. Do this consistently and after around four days your puppy should automatically head for his proper toilet spot after meals or whenever he needs. Sometimes it can take a little longer and this is where it is important to be patient with your puppy. Pay attention to your pup and supervise at all times when toilet training. If he or she does have an accident then simply clear it up. Always praise your puppy for getting it right and never scold for getting it wrong. You may think this will help speed up toilet training but it will, in fact, have the opposite effect. If you catch your puppy in the middle of the act, simply interrupt him by clapping your hands, say Ah, outside! and then immediately take him outside to finish, lavish praise on him if he does finish outside. This will only work if you catch him in the middle of the act as once he has finished the opportunity to teach him is gone.
The Rule of Twelve There are certain milestones your puppy should reach and, by the age of twelve weeks, these come under a pup s Rule of Twelve. This means that by this age your pup should have: Experienced 12 different surfaces Played with 12 different objects Experienced 12 different locations Met and played with 12 new people outside of your family
Been Exposed to 12 different noises don t deliberately scare your pup when doing this and work within his comfort level Been Exposed to 12 fast moving objects although you must not allow your pup to chase those objects If your puppy is over 12 weeks old then simply introduce all the above until he or she has gained the requisite experience as this will help socialize your pet. This, in turn, means you will be rewarded with a happy, calm dog that is able to behave well in any situation. Look after your new puppy properly and you can look forward to a lifetime of affection and fun with your pet. A puppy can become the center of a family, pulling everyone towards it with its sheer irresistibility as well as unconditional love. Learning to care for their pet can help teach your children much about responsibility and compassion while exercising your puppy will enable you both to get fit while enjoying the companionship and constant adventure that a walk offers. Dogs truly are our faithful friends. Start that friendship right with your new puppy and it will be the best one you ever experienced. Visit:
