1 December 2011 Today s pets enjoy the opportunity to live substantially longer and healthier lives than those just a decade ago. More and more pets are making it to 7 years old the age when a pet usually is deemed senior and beyond. One big reason is you. A generation of pet owners who view their cats and dogs as family members have demanded higher-quality health care for their pets. And the veterinary industry has responded. Significant advances in health-management strategies for older pets including senior-focused nutrition, surgical procedures like hip replacements and kidney transplants, improved therapies for mental decline, effective cancer chemotherapy protocols, complete dentalcare programs, comprehensive arthritis management strategies, and easy access to sophisticated diagnostic techniques have contributed greatly to the average pet s longevity and quality of life. Yet for all this good news, there are several common mistakes that even well-intentioned owners make when it comes to their older pets health. These missteps are usually based on outdated or incorrect information. To help, we ll bust four of the most common myths related to senior pets. Myth 1. The Problem is just old age. First off, let s be clear. Old age certainly is not a disease. Rather, it s the sum of the damaging effects of time on the body and internal organs. While veterinarians use a pet s age as a measuring stick for longevity, age alone is by no means an indicator of a pet s current health status. Nor is age a singular predictor of a pet s future health. The best way to determine a senior pet s The Truth About Older Cats and Dogs By William Fortney, DVM, from Healthy Pet Magazine actual health status is through comprehensive veterinary examinations at least twice every year. For senior pets, these exams need to include routine screening tests of the most vital internal organ systems. Older pets are more susceptible to such serious and progressive diseases as cancer, arthritis, hormone imbalances, mental decline, and age-related disease of the heart, kidney, or liver. Unfortunately, many pet owners write off early symptoms of these problems as simply old age. Pet owners may incorrectly assume that nothing can be done to improve these conditions. As a result, the pet suffers from lack of timely medical intervention. By the time the cat or dog is taken to the veterinarian for an evaluation, the condition may be advanced. This can greatly reduce the number of health-management options available. So be on the lookout for the following common conditions, which many pet owners mistake for just old age. If you notice any of them in your cat or dog, don t hesitate to schedule an examination with your veterinarian. Inactivity (which may actually be arthritis or a systemic illness.) Decreased appetite (possibly from dental disease or any of a number of systemic diseases.) Decreased vision (perhaps due to cataracts or a retinal problem.) Periods of disorientation or confusion (likely culprit, cognitive dysfunction syndrome.) Myth 2. Nothing can be done about age-related problems. Unfortunately, some specific diseases are age-related. Most pet owners recognize the symptoms and behavior changes associated with an age-related disease. However, many mistakenly assume that nothing can be done to help senior pets afflicted with the common disease of aging. As a result, their pets continue to suffer from a lack of medical attention and care. In truth, many of the following symptoms, which are associated with aging, can be managed. Decreasing activity Urinary or fecal accidents Bad breath Morning stiffness Decreased or increasingly finicky appetite Periods of confusion or disorientation. If you notice any of these in your older pet, speak with your veterinarian about options for limiting the effects. Specially formulated senior diets, regular exercise, weight control, and dental health can all help prevent age-related diseases or at the very least, significantly postpone their onset. Myth 3. The problem can wait until the next visit. Regular exams are an important part of any pet s healthcare program, and a once yearly examination is prudent for healthy younger patients. However, dogs and cats have a significantly faster aging process (continued on page 2) Next Meeting Friday, December 16th at the Christmas Party...more inside Dog Daze Deadline: the 3rd of the month. After puberty, each calendar year in a pet s life actually represents four to 10 years of aging, depending on the breed and size of the pet. This rapid aging process can also accelerate the development and progression of diseases. Significant advancement in the natural course of a disease can occur between routine yearly examinations. For this reason, veterinarians recommend twice-yearly visits sometimes more frequent for senior pets, even those that appear to be healthy. This six month strategy greatly enhances the chances of detecting a problem in the early stages when more therapeutic options exist. What s more, most age-related diseases are time-sensitive. Obviously, early detection of serious conditions is imperative to long-term successful disease management and a favorable final outcome. Waiting for your pet s annual or twice yearly examination may eliminate the chance for an early diagnosis, minimize therapeutic options, and mean the difference between a good outcome and poor one. So don t wait. Any delay in disease detection and treatment could allow the disease to progress unchecked. The following are a few examples of symptoms that might indicate a serious condition in your cat or dog that requires immediate attention. Shortness of breath (symptom of heart failure.) A persistent cough (symptom of heart failure or lung tumors. Drinking more water (symptom of early kidney failure.) A new lump or bump (symptom of benign or malignant tumor) 2 If your senior cat or dog is experiencing any of the above, don t delay. Call your veterinarian right away. Myth 4. Anesthesia isn t safe for senior pets. Lifelong dental care is a good example of the advances that have been made in senior healthcare. There s a growing body of evidence demonstrating the importance of lifelong dental care on a pet s longevity and quality of life. Unfortunately, the positive benefits of routine dental care and teeth cleaning have historically been tempered by the risks of general anesthesia, which is necessary to effectively clean and polish a pet s teeth without discomfort to the pet. It is true that the risk of anesthesia is real in older pets, especially in those that may have heart, lung, liver, or kidney ailments. Still, the risks of anesthesia have been significantly minimized. The standard practice of required blood and urine screening tests, safer anesthetics and anesthetic protocols, and newer patient monitoring equipment have all notably contributed to much safer anesthesia. These are monumental advancements, especially when compared to the negative effects that chronic dental disease has on a pet s overall health and well-being. As your cats and dogs age, you must assume an increasing responsibility for their overall health. By being an active and observant partner in care including being more informed about early warning signs, taking timely action, and visiting your veterinarian more often you can take advantage of the recommended life-extending preventive healthcare programs available for senior pets today. Your pet will thank you for years to come. FF Publisher s Note: There s nothing like adding a puppy to the household to give the oldsters more activity. We are going to have a ball!! Audrey What to Do When Your Pet Goes Missing From the ARK News I lost my dog. The staff at the El Cajon Animal Shelter hears this phrase multiple times a day. What s the best way to find your lost pet? One of the first things to do is go to your animal shelter and check to see if your pet is there. It is best to actually look at the shelter rather than call, as the office staff doesn t work directly with the animals and is not aware of what animals have entered the shelter. If you live within the city limits of El Cajon or La Mesa, the El Cajon Animal Shelter is your shelter. Residents in the unincorporated areas of El Cajon, Santee, Lakeside and unincorporated El Cajon (like Crest) are in the jurisdiction of the San Diego County Department of Animal Control on Sweetwater Road in Bonita. Post flyers in your neighborhood with a good picture of your pet. You can also post a small flyer on the animal shelter Lost board and enter your information in the lost log in the office. Craig s List online has become a beacon for many people who have lost or found pets. Be sure to check it throughout the day and post information about your pet. Don t give up! You should also check the South County and Central County Animal Controls as your pet may have run outside the El Cajon jurisdiction. How do you keep your pet from running away? Make sure your fence is secure so the pet cannot jump over the fence or dig under the fence. And make sure the kids close the gate behind them when they leave. Provide plenty of shade and water for your pet at all times. If you are having workers do yard work, construction or moving, make sure the doors stay shut, leave the pet in a carrier or in a bedroom with the door shut or take the pet with you that day. One of the main reasons pets run away is because they are not spayed/neutered. They follow their hormones and simply want to do what natures dictates! It is dangerous for the pet to be out loose as they have traffic, wildlife, and other obstacles to fight. Plus, pets are shown to live longer, healthier lives when they have been spayed or neutered. If you find a dog, please bring it to the shelter. Again, depending on the jurisdiction in which you found it, the staff may tell you that you will have to take it to the south county shelter. Although this seems like an inconvenience, if this were your dog, wouldn t you want to be able to find it quickly? FF
4 Meet the Breed: The Pyrenean Shepherd From AKC files and the Pyrenean Standard The Pyrenean Shepherd or Pyr Shep has herded sheep in the Pyrenees Mountains of Southern France for centuries. The breed comes in two coat types Rough-Faced and smooth-faced. Colors include shades of fawn from tan to copper, as well as charcoal to silver to pearl grey; merles of diverse tones; brindle; black; and black with a small amount of white. Although tentative with strangers, the Pyrenean shepherd has a very lively, cheerful disposition, and is superb canine athlete who excels at agility and other dog sports. Pyrenean Shepherds remained almost unknown outside France for many years. Between 3,000 and 6,000 years ago, the mountainous area where the dogs were developed was gradually transformed from forest to meadows and open woodland by grazing goats and sheep. Shepherds and herdsmen tended the livestock in an agricultural system known as transhumance; the seasonal movement of livestock from the lower valleys, where they spend the winter, to the high pasture land during the summer. The large, white Great Pyrenees guarded the livestock, and the smaller Pyrenean Shepherd herded. Shepherds often kept many of the small herding dogs to care for large flocks of sheep (small dogs need less food and more agile on the mountain slopes), and the population of Pyrenean Shepherds has remained fairly high through the years. The breed first distinguished itself outside its native mountains with its service to French troops during World War I. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Pyr Sheps gave their lives for the cause as couriers, search and rescue dogs, finding injured soldiers after battles, and accompanying guards on their rounds. This breed will thrive in a home of an active family. The Pyrenean Shepherd is dominated by his love for his work. As a companion, he is very active and enthusiastic and insists upon being involved in the day s activities whatever they may be. The Pyr Shep coat does not require much maintenance beyond a thorough brushing every few weeks. He is a small, sinewy, lean, lively dog whose sparkling personality and quicksilver intelligence are reflected in the vibrant expression of his unique triangular head and windswept face. A superb athlete, his beautiful, flowing gait shaves the earth. Uncoiffed, light-boned and 4 built as a horizontal rectangle, his high energy and intelligent, cunning, mischievous attitude show that he is always on alert, suspicious, ready for action. An ardent herder of all kinds of livestock, his vigilant attitude and great vivacity of movement give his little dog a highly singular gait and appearance, characteristic of no other breed. The Pyr Shep is naturally distrustful of strangers, but when well-socialized from a young age, he or she has a very lively, cheerful disposition. The two varieties, Smooth- Faced and Rough-Faced (including both demi-long and long-haired coat types and variations on each) are born in the same litters. The breed changed very little in appearance and temperament over the centuries because of its isolation. Some Pyr Sheps came to North America in the 19th century accompanying flocks of imported sheep. Pyr Shep fanciers imported breeding stock in the 1970s and 80s establishing the foundation for the breed in America today.

6 Dog Behavior Forum: Pack Leader Myths Taken from the Off Track Greyhound Newsletter, published in the Rocky Mountain News By Daniel Estep, Ph.D. and Suzanne Hetts, Ph.D. It has been reported that this year s National Championship has a recordbreaking entry of nearly 4,000 conformation competitors from 50 states and more than 45 countries who will be competing for $225,000 at the largest dog show in the country. On December 17 and 18, in Orlando, Florida, this event will be held in conjunction with the AKC Agility Invitational and the AKC National Obedience Invitational including the first-ever All-American Dogs, the Juniors events (159 conformation, 47 obedience, 50 agility entries. and the Eukanuba World Challenge (44 participants), all together making for the record-breaking entry for all events. AKC/Eukanuba National Championship by the numbers: 173 AKC recognized breeds are entered. The largest entries include: 64 Boston Terriers, 61 Vizslas, 58 French Bulldogs, 57 Rhodesian Ridgebacks,56 Labrador Retrievers, 51 Australian Shepherds, 50 Havanese, 50 Golden Retrieves, 48 The pack leader idea has been misinterpreted and over-used. Objective data relevant to this concept have been obtained by two animal behaviorists in New York City, Drs. Peter Borchelt and Linda Goodloe. They distributed a survey to over 2,000 dog owners which asked detailed questions about the behavior of their dogs, including what kinds of social interactions owners permitted and the frequency of occurrence of various forms of aggressive behavior. It is commonly believed that playing tug-of-war games with dogs and allowing them to sleep on their owners beds will cause them to challenge and be aggressive toward their owners. The survey results did not support these beliefs. Instead, there was no correlation between whether or not tug-of-war and other competitive interactions were encouraged and the likelihood of dominance aggression. Allowing a dog to sleep on the bed was not correlated with the occurrence of dominance aggression. These results support the idea that there is nothing inherently wrong with allowing dogs to sleep on the bed and playing tug-of-war with them. Another common belief is that feeding the dog before the family eats leads to the dog achieving a dominant position because he is allowed to eat first. Not only is there no evidence to support this belief, but careful analysis reveals the faultiness of this logic. The major way that animals express dominance is by competing over scarce resources such as food. Since owners typically are not competing with their dogs to get the dog s food first, a competitive interaction does not occur. The important point is not when the dogs eats but rather, from the dog s perspective, whether the person and dog are contesting for the same food. Dogs can be aggressive over food, toys, a favorite resting place or when people try to move them. When a dog shows threat Eleventh Annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championships Dachshunds, 46 Rottweilers, 45 Pugs, 44 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, 44 Border Collies. The newest breeds to compete include: 3 American English Coonhounds, 5 Entiebucher Mountain Dogs, 9 Finnish Lapphunds, 8 Cesky Terriers, 11 Norwegian Lundehungs, 12 Xoloitzcuintli. All 14 AKC Miscellaneous Breeds and more than 130 veterans will be represented. Dogs from 44 countries will compete in the Eukanuba World Challenge including Mexico, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The Eukanuba World Challenge is a one-of-a-kind event offering top dogs from around the world. The winner of the Eukanuba Breeders Stakes will compete for the title of Eukanuba World Challenge Champion and $15,000 in prize money. 159 youngsters, ages 9-17, who have met high academic standards and qualifications criteria based on year-round competitions, will compete in Junior Showmanship. 6 ening behavior such as growling, lunging or snapping or outright aggression in these circumstances, dominance may be one of the potential causes. Fear or defensive behavior is also a common motivation for aggressive behavior. Any time a dog shows threats or aggression professional help should be sought immediately. FF Agility and Obedience Invitationals by the numbers: 592 entries in the AKC Agility Invitational 157 breeds from 46 states; and 146 entries in the AKC National Obedience Invitational 55 breeds from 33 states, and Canada. 50 Juniors will be competing at the AKC National Juniors Agility Competition and 48 Juniors will compete at the AKC National Juniors Obedience Competition. 9 All-American Dogs are competing in agility and 6 in obedience. Look for the Event broadcast on ABC Network Television on Saturday, February 4, Publisher s Note: Good luck to all our local agility and obedience competitors who will be there next weekend representing their breed!
