1 September 2011 Hand position meaning where you place your hands during various exercise is clearly mandated in the AKC regulations. The rules themselves are simple, yet far too many handlers lose unnecessary and costly points by either not knowing or not adhering to these rules. So let s clear the air and clarify what positions are and are not acceptable in an AKC obedience trial in order to avoid the if I had only known syndrome. First a little background: hand position was officially made fixed by AKC in order to standardize everyone s performance and to assure that no one exhibitor had an unfair advantage over another by using some special hand position that enhanced their own particular method of training. With standardized positions, everyone would have to adapt to the same format. The rule s purpose is an attempt to make the competition as uniform as possible among handlers, and also to assist the judges from having to interpret whether some oddball hand position or movement is a second command, an assist, a warning, incentive, or the natural carriage of the handler. Judges have enough to contend with when judging without having to decipher whether or not a handler is doing any of the aforementioned. Having a rule ends all the fuss and bother. It also gives all the competitors an even slate: it is meant to level the playing field and make it more just. A judge can give a substantial deduction for the use of any hand position not recognized in the AKC regulations. (A substantial deduction is 3-5 points.) It s kind of like a fine. Proper Hand Position in Obedience By Catherine L. Zinsky The Rulebook firmly states: In all exercises where the dog is required to heel free, one of two options should be followed. Let s stop and look at this statement more closely: note that the hand positions for heeling are only required when there is no leash! Absolute hand position is only compulsory when the dog is required to HEEL FREE. Personally I feel the heel free phrase should be in bold print and underlined in the regulations, as many Novice contenders don t fully realize that this rule does not apply to dogs that are on leash! When the dog is on leash the hand can be held anywhere that is practical and natural as long as the hands don t interfere with the dog s heeling capabilities. Practical, folks! Not entwined on top of your head, stuck behind your back, or flailing about like windmills. Again: mandatory hand position rules are only applicable to those dogs NOT on leash. With that clarified, let s go on with the rule: there are two options for hand position during the heel free. The first option stipulates that (1) when the handler is in motion, the arms and hands must move naturally at the sides and must hang naturally at the sides when stopped. Sounds simple enough, yet I have seen people who clamp their palms rigidly to their thighs and move like little tin soldiers, utterly petrified. This is not considered natural. Nor is it considered natural to heel with the arms hanging comfortably, but with the index finger pointing downward, reminding the dog to heel here, please. Then there is the fist maker: the arms are hanging at the sides all right, but the hands are clenched, perspiring fists exuding nervous tension and right into the dog s face, no less! Relax! It s a sport, not a life or death situation. Hanging naturally means that the arms are hanging loosely and comfortably from the shoulders, perpendicular to the ground, hands opened and fingers relaxed. There should be a natural, easy sway to the arms as the handler moves around the ring per the judge s orders. Remember: no tin soldier stuff, no bent elbows, no rigidity, and no directional assistance from fickle fingers! (continued from page 1) Option two of the rule reads: (2) the right hand and arm must move naturally at the side, while the left hand must be held against the front of the body, centered in the area of the waist, with the left forearm carried against the body. The middle of the body is generally that area over your navel or right above your navel, mid-waist. This is for the left hand only, not both hands!! The right arm is to hang naturally at the right side. That the left forearm must be carried against the body is important. hat the judge is looking for is that your elbow not be protruding out over the dog s head. Try to get a mental picture of your heeling stature. Is you left elbow held out? If so, bring it in. Your forearm should more or less curve around your midriff. An exception to options 1 and 2 is made during the fast. The rule reads: In either of the above situations the hands and arms may be adjusted during the fast portion of an exercise, in order to maintain balance. The may be adjusted gives you, the handler, a choice during the fast. Personally I take full advantage of this option. When the judge says fast, my left arm moves up and forward with my leg, acting as an additional body signal to my dog that we re moving out. Just be sure that once the judge says normal, you return your arm to the position held before initiating the fast. The only other area where AKC is extremely unwavering about hand position is where a dog is performing a front in any given exercise. Almost all recalls require that the dog come and sit in front of you, the handler. It s important to realize that a recall in obedience is performed whenever the dog returns to you. The dog is recalled. So the Broad Jump in Open is actually a recall over the broad jump. It s not a direct recall there s the obstacle of the jump but it is definitely a recall. Therefore the dog is required to sit in front of the handler after performing the jump. This applies to all Incorrect Hand Position exercises in which the dog comes to front, whether it be the Novice Recall, the Retrieve over the High Jump, or the Glove exercise in Utility. When a front is required, your hands must be hanging naturally at your sides. Incorrect Hand Position Many handlers are unaware of where their hands are when they are heeling or when the dog is coming to sit in a front. I would highly recommend that if you are new to obedience or if you have any doubts whatsoever, that you have yourself videoed before ever entering a trial, then watch it carefully. Honestly analyze your hand carriage and subsequently make the necessary changes in order to better your performance and score. Happy heeling GOT TREATS? Catherine L. 3 Water Sports by Connie Kaplan have been taking a water sports class I with my Goldendoodle, Soba. She is learning many of the commands and skills that the Portuguese water dogs do in their trials. She loves all things associated with water. So far she has learned to jump onto a boat from land, come to me when she is on the boat and I am on land, retrieve in water and go to the boat from a distant position on land. I have also taken a standup paddleboard class with her. She is great at that and only has to sit or be in a down on the board while I paddle. She loves to swim and is a gamer for whatever we are doing, but especially anything associated with the water. Connie has been taking classes from Lara Schindler and Happy Dog Happy Owner. Publisher s Note: Talking about water sports, someone sent me this link recently to a great video! blog/2011/08/02/amazing-surfingbulldog/ Club Storage Shed By Cathy Colley ABOCI is pleased to announce the opening of our equipment storage shed on the grounds of Allied Gardens, on the lower lot behind the Rec Center. The shed is an existing Park building that we now can use for our Club, rent-free. It may not look like a model for home improvement, but it is strong and serviceable. Having a club storage shed will save hours of time and labor for Club members transporting our equipment to the training grounds. The storage shed project has been in the works for over a year. Our original idea was to rent a storage container similar to those used for athletic teams, and have it set up on the grounds. This did not work out, due to new City laws. However, the Park and Recreation Department continued to work with us to find a solution to our storage needs. It was finally proposed that we could take possession of a small unused shed on the grounds. Although in bad shape at first, the shed turned out to be very strong and structurally sound. Some major cleanup and repair was needed. For this we thank Joe Hill, husband of ABOCI member Vickie Hill. Joe came out promptly and used his skills and expertise to get the shed ready and secure for our use. He cleaned out everything inside, hauled the junk away, fixed holes in the ceiling, shored up the floor, and installed two types of locking security. The Club decided against a new paint job, due to City regulations, plus the possibility of tagging, in case a freshly painted building drew too much attention to itself. Having a club storage shed should prove to be a good decision for our Club and our 3 members. Previously, a volunteer would haul home all the Obedience and/or Rally equipment, and store it themselves. Then each Monday for practice, they would need to be there for set up and take down. We were running out of willing volunteers! Now, the Club equipment stored in the shed can be accessed by all members. This equipment is for use only at the Allied Gardens grounds, and only during ABO- CI hours and events. On Monday training nights, members are responsible for set up and take down. For example, if members want to use the Ring and Jumps, those that arrive early can retrieve the equipment from the shed, set it up and use it. Those who are the last two people to use the equipment should break it down, and return it to the shed. Audrey Austin has kindly donated the use of a set of wheels, to make things roll smoothly from the shed to the training grounds. The Storage Shed is located down a set of stairs behind the Rec Center building. There are two locks. If you would like the combinations to use the equipment, or have any questions, concerns, or ideas about the Storage Shed, please feel free to contact Cathy Colley at chattycatcathy@sbcglobal. net. Wags and Happy Training!FF August 15, 2011 Minutes of ABOCI Meeting After a fun and games session and a terrific potluck, the August 15, 2011, meeting was called to order by President David Smelser at 7:25 p.m. With so many members attending who had their dogs with them, David asked for introductions of people and dogs. The secretary s minutes from July 18 were approved. There was no Treasurer s Report this month. David reported that we have three classes running at this time: puppy class, beginning novice, and CGC. Geri Dimeglio has a CGC class in progress. There will be a test at the end of the class for members. Geri and Cathy Colley will be offering a CGC test either every month or bi-monthly, as there is a need. The test will be advertised and cost $15 for members, $20 for non-members. There will be signups, with the first test on September 12. Cathy Colley has the shed ready and secure for storage of the club equipment. Meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m.

4 Fun & Games & Good Food Too Our August meeting was in conjunction with a potluck supper and dog games. We had a very nice turn-out and many members with their happy dogs. The evening began with the dog games organized by Cathy Colley, who was assisted by her husband, Steve. First round was Musical Hula Hoops. Hula Hoops were placed on the ground in a large circle. A boom box, worked by Steve, was in the middle. Dogs and handlers heeled around the outside of the circle as the music played. When Steve stopped the music, the dogs had to sit in a hoop. Odd dog not in a hoop was out. (Musical Chairs without the chairs.) Round 1. We had enough dogs to make up two rounds. And the winners were: 1st place, Judy Ekdahl and Skunk, (Border Terrier) 2nd place, Jeanette Poling and Kick (Collie) 3rd place, Nancy Wooton and Panda (English Shepherd) Round 2. 1st place, Judy Ekdahl and Basil (Border Jack) 2nd Place, Audrey Austin and Zazzy (Chesapeake Bay Retriever) 3rd Place, Eleni Stevens and Chance (Poodle) The next game was the Cheeto Spitting/Catching contest for 45 seconds. The dogs sat in front of the handler with a partner watching and counting. The handler spits a Cheeto at the dog for the dog to catch. The partner counts each caught Cheeto. Snagging from the ground did not count. This game was made for all the obedience trainers who spit food for fronts. A comment received from Jeanette regarding Cooper s approach to this challenge : The cheetos spitting contest was sort of funny --- Cooper caught them just fine, but he would NOT eat them spit them out we had a circle of cheeto balls around us it was so funny Cathy Colley and I were laughing so hard we thought we were going to wet our pants. (needed video of this one!) And the winners were: 1st place, Debbie Sherwood and Porsche (Irish Setter) with 15 caught. 2nd place, Ruth Anderson and Josie (Australian Shepherd) with 12 caught. 3rd place, Audrey Austin and Zazzy (Chesapeake Bay Retriever) with 11 caught Actually, all the dogs won, with all those Cheetos flying around. Cathy was so busy organizing the game, she forgot to enter Summer, who is very good at Cheeto catching. Next year, for sure. We then moved on to the potluck. As usual, we had a variety of eats with salads, wraps, and desserts. There was plenty for seconds or thirds. A truly pot luck nobody was assigned anything, but we all seem to get it right.ff In the interest of promoting wellbehaved dogs and responsible dog ownership in the community, ABOCI is pleased to announce that we will be offering CGC Testing. The CGC Tests will be open to both Members and Nonmembers, and are open to all breeds and mixed breeds. CGC Testing will be done by AKC Evaluator Cathy Colley at Allied Gardens Community Park on prearranged Monday evenings. CGC Testing Offered by ABOCI The new CGC Test Only program is for those handler and dog teams that want to come out and take the CGC Test without a class, but we will still be offering our regular CGC Class, taught by our own wonderful dog trainer, Geri DiMeglio. The CGC Class is a 6-week instructional class which includes the CGC Test the final night of class. Check with Geri or the website for more info on future CGC classes. The CGC, or Canine Good Citizen, Test is an AKC program begun in 1989 to promote good citizenship in dogs and responsibility in dog ownership. Over 30 states have currently adopted CGC legislation and many landlords and homeowners associations recognize the CGC certification. It has become the standard for good behavior in our pet dogs. The Test consists of evaluation for 10 behaviors. For more info and to read over the Test items, you can visit the AKC website at Or, just ask for a free brochure 4 Kick Poling, resting after the 2nd in Hula Hoops! from Cathy Colley any Monday night at Allied Gardens. The CGC Tests will be by pre-registration only, and we will be evaluating approximately 8 dogs per test. This is a chance to get your dog s CGC testing in a nice, relaxed quiet environment, with our caring members helping out! Our first CGC Test is scheduled for Monday, September 12th, and is already full, with 8 dog/handler teams registered. The cost is $15 for members, and $20 for non-members. We will be scheduling future dates based on interest. So if you, or someone you know, is interested in signing up for the CGC Test at ABOCI, please contact Cathy Colley at: chattycatcathy@sbcglobal.net. FF

5 September Brags RUTH ANDERSON WITH JOSIE, Australian Shepherd: At the Cabrillo trials, September 3 and 4, Josie earned her first two AKC Novice legs in the B class. On Saturday, she missed the ribbons by one point, my fault for not returning to heel position after the Stand for Exam. On Sunday, she took second place with a score of 191, in spite of one no-sit (my clumsy footwork), sniffing her way around the outside turn on the Figure 8, and a little creative heeling after the Fast. Heeling is always an adventure with her, but I m so proud of her. I ve never trained a dog who worked as hard as she does to control its natural energy. And all just to please me. I count myself very lucky to have her. EILEEN NEUMEISTER WITH MANGO: From a September 5 from Eileen: Mango earned his CGC last week. CATHY COLLEY WITH WINDY, Magicold s Wind in the Willows, TD, JH, CGC, TDI: Windy went to her first Obedience and Rally Trial this weekend. The Cabrillo KC show at Bates Nut Windy Colley Farm was a lovely venue. Although it was hot, we had fun and Windy really enjoyed her time in the ring. We entered Rally Novice B, and earned her first leg with a First Place Ribbon! Bobbie and Maddux doing some field work BOBBIE SEVIER WITH MADDUX: Maddux finished her CD title on Saturday, September 3, at Cabrillo Kennel Club. Maddux finished at three trials, with three firsts. her scores were 198, 194.5, and 198. She now is All- Starr s In A League of Her Own CD RE TDX MX MXJ NF Finishing her CD also gives her the VCD1 title!! FROM SARAH BALL: BAYLOR made her debut in Novice B yesterday by earning her first leg with a 2nd place and a And, she got her second leg today with a 1st place and a 195. I m very proud of my little happy worker. A BIG thank you to our obedience trainer JoAnne Griffin who spins her magic at every lesson! We couldn t have done it without her! FROM JEANNETTE POLING WITH COOPER: Cooper took the CGC test Monday night, September 12th, with Cathy and Geri officiating, and passed! FROM MIMI LORI AND ARTI: My little Australian Shepherd ARTI (ALEGRE ARTEMIS LADY OF MYSTERY, CD RN UR01) finished her RA (Rally Advanced) with a second place ribbon on Saturday, September 3, at Cabrillo KC in Valley Center. She finished her title in three straight shows: 2 Silver Bay, 1 Cabrillo with two 2nd place ribbons and 1 third place. She is such a fun little dog to work with. So now it is on to the fall shows to work on her Rally Excellent and her Graduate Novice titles. Sarah and Baylor Jeannette and Cooper CGC Congratulations to Everyone! 5

6 From organic to eco-friendly and holistic to natural, many hot buzzwords are used to promote a wide array of dog products, including food, treats, toys, beds and accessories. If you re confused about the official definitions of all these words, you re not alone. Refer to the following chart to find out what each term actually means. ECO-FRIENDLY: Simply put, to be eco-friendly is to be friendly to the Earth. Before buying an eco-friendly product, determine if the product consists of durable recycled ingredients and materials: was manufactured in an environmentally friendly fashion Does the manufacturer use wind or solar power? Does it utilize electric power instead of gas? Is it cruelty-free? Is the company mindful of human rights and animal welfare? Is it local or regional the farther a product travels, the higher the levels of carbon emitted. The use of this term, Eco-friendly, is not regulated. GREEN: To go green means to reduce your carbon footprint and lessen environmental carbon emissions. Green pet products include organic foods, beds, leashes, and toys made from sustainable or recycled materials (such as hemp, bamboo and reclaimed cotton). This term, Green, is not regulated either. HOLISTIC: Derived from the word whole, holistic health care doesn t simply look at the symptom or disease, but instead considers every aspect of an individual or animal s life and employs a combination of conventional and alternative methods of treatment. Holistic therapies include supplements, physical therapies and nutritional therapies. This term, holistic, is regulated by American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association: and the National Animal Supplement Council: NATURAL: Natural pet food refers to a feed or ingredient derived from plant, animal or mined sources, either unprocessed or subject to physical processing, heat processing, rendering, purification extraction, hydrolysis, enzymolysis or fermentation. The feed or ingredient can t undergo a chemically synthetic process, nor can it contain any additives or processing aids that are chemically synthetic except in amounts that might occur unavoidably in good manufacturing practices, according to the American Association of Feed Control Officials. The American Association of Feed Control Officials: org regulates the use of this term.) ORGANIC: Organic foods are produced without the use of artificial fertilizers, chemical pesticides or sewage, and cannot be genetically modified, irradiated or processed with antibiotics. Following the same regulations as human foods, pet food products labeled organic must contain at least 95 percent organic ingredients. The United States Department of Agriculture: and Organic Trade Association: com regulate this term. GREEN DEFINED from Dog World Magazine 6 5 WAYS TO GREEN YOUR DOG S DAY Being an eco-friendly dog owner doesn t have to be backbreaking work. Every minute of the day presents an opportunity to take small, environmentally conscious steps to reduce your dog s carbon paw print. When you take the time to make these changes, your dog and the rest of the planet s creatures will benefit, 6 a.m. Nature Calls Early morning walks give you and your dog time to bond and start the day off right with exercise, fresh air and quiet reflection. Tote biodegradable poop bags on walks. When your dog does its business in the yard, skip the bag and use a pooper scooper instead. 11 a.m. Lunch Break Whether you feed a commercial or homemade diet or a combination of both, your dog will benefit from added fruits, vegetables and protein sources. Buy locally grown, organic vegetables and organic grass-fed meats. Locally produced products are fresher and require less gasoline for transport. 3 p.m. Together toxin free Quality time with your dog doesn t always entail training and competing. Just being around each other strengthens the canine-human bond. If your dog keeps you company while you work in the yard, avoid toxic lawn and garden chemicals and fertilizers. Look for environmentally friendly products that pose no threat to Mother Nature or your dog. 6 p.m. Rag tag De-stress and burn off your dog s excess energy with evening play or training sessions. If your dog s greatest reward is a game of tug, fashion a tough, eco-friendly toy by tying several knots in an old towel. 8 p.m. Sound sleep Sleep plays a vital role in optimal performance. Recharge your dog s battery for tomorrow s dog show or flyball competition by providing a comfy spot for your dog to count sheep (or dream of herding them). Many eco-conscious companies manufacture high-quality dog beds made of recycled materials, such as shredded and repurposed plastic water bottles, as well as sustainable materials, such as hemp and bamboo. 7 Workers Needed for Our Next UKC Obedience & Rally Trial April brings warm breezes and our annual UKC Obedience and Rally trials. It can t happen without everyone pitching in. We have a wonderful chairman for the trials next year, Vickie Hill, and just as wonderful a secretary, Geri Dimeglio. Vickie is working hard to put this together and making progress: she has our grounds at Allied Gardens, our judges, and an awards chairman. This is just the beginning. She needs more of you to step up and take on a job. Here s what we need: Workers Chairman This person collects the workers for the trial (not always an easy job, getting people to volunteer). We need ring stewards and table stewards for two obedience rings and two rally rings for two days. The chairman assigns the workers to the rings and sets the times they must work. Set-up and Take-down Workers This job could be done by the workers chairman, or someone else can step up. The job involves organizing workers for setting up the rings and setting the rally courses in the morning, and taking down the rings and equipment and putting it in the trailer over-night. Repeat Sunday. Trailer Transport Someone with a proper vehicle has to volunteer to pick up the trailer, bring it to Allied Gardens early Saturday morning, and return it on Sunday when the trial is over. Hospitality All that good food we had last year was from our hospitality committee. This can be a lone chairman or a committee. For this job, you provide coffee and breakfast items for judges and workers before the trial begins. This can be as easy as picking up coffee from Starbucks and donuts from somewhere local or as difficult at baking coffee cake and boiling eggs. Lunch can be as easy or difficult as the chairman wishes. Pick up sandwiches and salads from a sandwich shop, order pizza delivered, pick up fried chicken, or make it all homemade. Also, provide water and soft drinks in a cooler. Judge s Hospitality Find a hotel and make reservations. Pick up the judges at the airport and take them to their hotel. Friday night: take them to dinner and back to the hotel. Saturday morning: pick them up and bring them to the trial. Repeat Saturday night and Sunday morning. Take them to the airport after the trial. Every one of these jobs is important!! This trial can t happen without volunteers. Give Vickie a call ( ) and let her know you are willing. FF 7
