4 January Jump Start Hike By Andrea Lage Given the cars in the parking lot, there was fair warning that at least a couple of Swissies might be found on the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail on January 1st of this year. In fact, there were 6 to be seen along a 5.3 mile stretch of the trail from Shippensburg to Oakville, PA. Despite forecasts for rain, we had 7 people and 6 Swissies turn out for the second annual January Jump Start hike that started an hour early in order to try to increase our chances of staying dry. Luckily the rain never materialized and we had a relatively warm and dry hike that day. Jenna won the award for willingness to hike on the least sleep. Reports were that she was the only one of us to ring in the New Year as well as several of the early hours of that day. Distance awards go to Nancy and Julie (Comer) who drove up from Charlottesville, VA as well as to Dave who came over from New Jersey. Al, Jenna's dad, won the best Dad award hands down for coming two years in a row without even having a dog involved. Now that is a dedicated Dad! As for the dogs, all hiked enthusiastically and some with awesome vocalizations of their pleasure. Izzy completed his last leg towards his NWPD title and thus, along with Jenna, deserves congratulations; Sirius and Nancy completed a leg toward Sirius' NWPD title; Delia with Dave and Abbey with Christopher earned WPD legs; Porter accompanied by Andrea earned another leg toward his WPDX title; and George with Comer finished their first ever 10+ mile hike. All dogs and their handlers deserve recognition for completing more than 10 miles on the very first day of the year. Hopefully it was just the beginning of a terrific year of hiking. 4

On the weekend of November 20th and 21st eight teams completed two back to back legs. The weather was sunny and chilly, and quite glorious if you would ask any of the Swissys. They walked at a relatively quick clip, tails wagging the entire time. In fact, many of us humans had a hard time keeping up with our dogs On Saturday the hike took place at The Laurels, a beautiful preserve in Unionville, PA. The trails are wide and manicured. It allowed for much camaraderie and just general fun. We had a long break at one of the two historical covered bridges located on the site. After the hike we shared lunch at the supposedly haunted Stottsville Inn. No apparitions decided to join us. Many decided to go to Doreen Holly s house to let the dogs romp and play. Some were able to stay for dinner. We enjoyed several more beverages, and listened to Gilbert Campbell (our videographer and friend) demonstrate his numerous animal calls. One brave couple, Kathy and Kevin, chose to camp out on the hill. Not only did their dog, Delilah, keep them warm, but she proudly protected them from the coyote outside their tent. Kathy knew what it was because she recognized the sound from earlier and caught a glimpse of it as it made a silhouette on the tent s wall. The next morning we shuttled cars to The Whip Tavern, our ending destination. This walk had a few more hills, but still had wide paths. We created quite a stir at our big break. We stopped at St. Mala- 5

6 chi s Church. It s the oldest Catholic mission church still in use in southeastern PA. Mass was just letting out, and we began the last leg of our journey. Since Captain and Titan were completing their titles, they led us into the homestretch. The dogs retired to our vehicles, and we retired to the Irish pub to enjoy some more laughs and pints before heading home. By Susie Fuquea I hope you all had great holidays. Emmett and Riley are well. We've settled into a new, Swissy-sized house with a big fenced yard for them. It is wonderful to have a yard...finally. Riley is just a sweetheart and Emmett is just the big goofy boy he was when we left. Folks that live and work in the compound where we live get a kick out of watching us walk. Emmett made his first bunny kill the other night. We had a couple of baby bunnies living under the porch and one came into the yard. Emmett, who is not the fastest boy, managed to catch it. He didn't shake it, but he did pick it up a couple of times before I got him to let it go. It ran off and was found dead the next morning. There are some cute bunnies here, but let's just say I'm not too upset that there is one less bunny helping itself to the "salad bar" in front of the house. I've attached a photo of Emm and Riley in front of the Gemini Observatory sign. This is where Nancy works. 7

8 C & P Club Member BRAGS! Welcome River Bullock to the C & P Club! Andi Lage and Porter complete 500 HIKING MILES!! They broke the pedometer on this feat! The Mailbarks OK so I haven't quite finished my cart. I have to finish varnishing it but I have to wait till it gets warmer outside. I started in the house but made Darlene and I sick from the fumes. Oops!!! Once I get it varnished I will put it back together for real and put the wheels back on. I think it came out pretty good for the most part. When you get close to it you will be able to see all the cat hair I painted into it.
