Yes, three of our illustrious club members made the trek to Paris (somebody had to do it!) in July to witness the World Dog Show. Julie Comer, Cathy Cooper (plus Cathy s sister, Phyllis) and Nancy Kechner had plenty of adventures in the City of Light, as chronicled through story and photographs in the next few pages. We also had C & P represented in the Winners category! Best Junior Male and Best Junior Female were sired by Cathy s Shadetree s Easy Rider Rider. What a thrill! Pick of the Litter Award Please see page 4 for details about the 2011 Pick of the Litter Award nominations! Best Junior Male and Best Junior Female sired by Shadetree s Easy Rider Rider

2 GSMD at the World Dog Show Cathy Cooper Editor s note: Lookey at that shirt! A dog show in Paris in July, this was my dream vacation! When I heard that the 2011 World Dog Show was going to be in Paris I decided that I would have to attend. In addition to getting the opportunity to see the dogs and meet the breeders from many of the European countries, I would also have the chance to visit an exciting city. Unbelievably the stars aligned and I was actually able to attend. Nancy Kechner, Julie Comer, my sister and I were heading to Paris! The only other World Dog Show that I had attended was in Berne, Switzerland in I was anxious to see if and how the breed had changed since then in Europe. The World Dog Show was one of the largest to date with an entry of over 22,000 dogs. The French Championship show was held at the same time with the French show beginning in the morning and the World Show in the afternoon. The show was held over four very busy days from July 7 th through July 10 th. Group 2 which includes Pinschers, Schnauzers, Mollosers and Sennenhunds showed on Thursday July 7 th. In France there is one parent club for all four of the Sennenhund breeds called the Association Francaise des Bouvier Suisses. The Grand Bouvier Suisse (GSMD), Bovier Bernois (Bernese Mountain Dog), Bouvier de L Entlebuch (Entlebucher) and Bouvier D Appenzell (Appenzeller) were all judged by Mme Lisbeth Mach. The GSMD entry was a little disappointing with an entry of 34. The Berner s had a huge entry of 210 and Entlebuchers of 22. I was pleased with the entry of 30 Appenzellers as I had never seen an entry that large. At the FCI shows the classes are divided into Intermediate, Open, Champion, Young and Veteran classes for dogs with the same following for bitches. A CACIB (Certificate of Apptitude for International Champion of Beauty) was awarded and a reserve CACIB as well as a CACS and reserve CACS (Certificates of National Beauty). The Best of Breed was awarded to a Russian bred dog Ch. Gran Vencedor s Aragon owned and bred by Andrey Klisha and handled by Nicolas Pinero. Aragon is also an AKC Champion after having spent a couple of months in the US in the fall of The Russian GSMD were actually the dominating force at the World Dog show with them winning all of the top awards except best female which was won by a bitch from Belgium. For the last several years the Russian GSMD have been the top competitors in Europe. Since the breed was only introduced to Russia less than a decade ago their progress has been very impressive. Since my first trip to a World Dog show I was impressed with the quality of the good dogs. There were still more average dogs than good dogs but the good dogs are much sounder than they were in the 90 s and would be competitive at AKC dog shows. The dogs tended to be a little racier than the dogs in the US. The dogs were also presented in a much more professional manner and the grooming was improved. None of the dogs looked like they had just come off the farm. The trip was a wonderful learning experience and great fun. In addition to the dog show we had the opportunity to do a lot of great sightseeing and enjoy some great food and wine! 2 C & P Swissy Licks August 2011

The award recipient will receive a traveling trophy until the following year, a photo shoot in the November Swissy Licks, and our unending gratitude! Tracy Brainard It is that time of year again when we need to start collecting photos for next year's calendar. If everyone could send us a pic or 2 of their dogs by Sept. 1st, we will put a calendar together again for Please include your dog's name and your last name for the calendar. Remember, no humans in the photos, please. Also, please be thinking of how many calendar's you might be interested in. Darlene and I like to think of it as a donation to the club, oh, and lookey...we get a nice calendar. Last year we were able to raise enough money to cover some of the club's expenses, such as, insurance for events, picnics, etc... Let's break last year's record with a higher calendar order!!!!! Editor s note: Many thanks to Tracy and Darlene for the dozens of hours it took to create the 2011 calendars. Because of their efforts the club raised over $900!! Those funds helped to cover the cost of the New Year s Party, Hunt Country Cluster activities, club insurance and the annual incorporation filing fee. 4 C & P Swissy Licks August 2011

5 2011 Eastern Regional Specialty Mary Jo Rasmussen, Show Chair This year s Hunt Country Cluster in Millwood, VA is September 29th- October 2nd and has been designated as the GSMDCA s Eastern Regional Specialty. The C & P Club has hosted a Specialty and Supported Entries at this show cluster (on behalf of the GSMDCA) for several years. We are thrilled to be recognized as the Eastern Regional Specialty and we ve made several enhancements to the weekend events! Weight Pull First, we are adding a weight pull on Thursday, September 29th in Stuarts Draft, VA about 1.5 hour drive south of Millwood. Rob Via is our host and weight pull judge. Thanks, Kris Featheringham, for organizing this event! Herding Friday, in addition to the supported entry, we are offering herding at the same location as last year, Berryville, VA. Many of us earned one leg toward our Herding Capability Test (HCT) certificate last year. We have arranged for two shepherds this year! This means you will be able to earn your second leg under a different judge (a requirement for the certificate). You will also be able to earn two legs at this test. So if you have a dog who is six months of age or older, and they are trying herding for the first time, they could walk away with the certificate because they can earn two legs in one afternoon under two different judges! Please see the herding flyer and entry form in this publication. Preentry is encouraged, but not necessary we accept same-day entries. Space is limited to 50 entries; 25 per judge. Thank you, Megan Fletcher, for making this event possible! Other Fun Stuff Saturday, in addition to the supported entry, we will hold our annual picnic, club meeting, raffle, kid s scavenger hunt and educational seminar. This year s educational seminar will be examining a batch of puppies in relation to our breed standard. The Swissy pups will be 8 weeks old and you are welcome to a hands-on experience. Eastern Regional Specialty Sunday is the Eastern Regional Specialty, including Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes. Our Sweeps judge is Winifred Sienkewicz but we all know her as Phreddie. The weekend s festivities conclude at our favorite historic tavern in Upperville. We can bring dogs on the patio! See the following page for a complete schedule of events. 7 Heatstroke Survival Guide Dr. Robert Newman What is Heatstroke? In simple terms, heatstroke occurs when a dog loses its natural ability to regulate its body temperature. Dogs don't sweat all over their bodies the way humans do. Canine body temperature is primarily regulated through respiration (i.e., panting). If a dog's respiratory tract cannot evacuate heat quickly enough, heatstroke can occur. To know whether or not your dog is suffering from heatstroke (as opposed to merely heat exposure), it's important to know the signs of heatstroke. A dog's normal resting temperature is about to degrees Fahrenheit. Once a dog's temperature rises above 105 degrees, physiological changes start to take place, and the dog begins to experience the effects of heatstroke. At 106 to 108 degrees, the dog begins to suffer irreversible damage to the kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract, heart and brain. If a dog is experiencing heatstroke, you may observe excessive panting; hyperventilation; increased salivation; dry gums that become pale, grayish and tacky; rapid or erratic pulse; weakness; confusion; inattention; vomiting; diarrhea; and possible rectal bleeding. If the dog continues to overheat, breathing efforts become slowed or absent, and finally, seizures or coma can occur. The amount of damage a dog sustains when stricken with heatstroke depends on the magnitude and duration of the exposure. The longer and more severe the exposure, the worse the damage will be. What to do Kenzie Fletcher-Westenmeyer staying cool! 1. Pay attention to your dog. Recognizing the symptoms of heatstroke and responding quickly is essential for the best possible outcome. 2. Get into the shade. If you think your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move it into a shaded area and out of direct sunlight. Apply cool water to the inner thighs and stomach of the dog, where there's a higher concentration of relatively superficial, large blood vessels. Apply cool water to the foot pads, as well. 3. Use running water. A faucet or hose is the best way to wet down your dog's body. Never submerge your dog in water, such as in a pool or tub this could cool the dog too rapidly, leading to further complications, including cardiac arrest and bloating. 4. Use cool - not cold - water. Many people make the mistake of using cold water or ice to cool the dog. When faced with a dog suffering from heatstroke, remember that the goal August 2011 C & P Swissy Licks 7

8 Heatstroke Survival Guide (continued) is to cool the dog. Using ice or extremely cold water is actually counterproductive to this process because ice and cold water cause the blood vessels to constrict, which slows blood flow, thus slowing the cooling process. 5. Don't cover the dog. One of the keys to successfully cooling your dog is ensuring the water being placed on the dog can evaporate. Never cover an overheated dog with a wet towel or blanket. This inhibits evaporation and creates a sauna effect around your dog's body. Likewise, don't wet the dog down and put it into an enclosed area, such as a kennel. Any air flow during the cooling process is helpful in reducing the dog's body temperature. Sitting with the wet dog in a running car with the air conditioner blowing is an ideal cooling situation. 6. Keep the dog moving. It's important to try to encourage your dog to stand or walk slowly as it cools down. This is because the circulating blood tends to pool in certain areas if the dog is lying down, thus preventing the cooled blood from circulating back to the core. 7. Allow the dog to drink small amounts of water. Cooling the dog is the first priority. Hydration is the next. Don't allow the dog to gulp water. Instead, offer small amounts of water that's cool, but not cold. If the dog drinks too much water too rapidly, it could lead to vomiting or bloat. 8. Avoid giving human performance drinks. Performance beverages designed for humans are not recommended because they are not formulated with the canine's physiology in mind. If you can't get an overheated dog to drink water, try offering chicken- or beef-based broths. See a Veterinarian Once your dog's temperature begins to drop, cease the cooling efforts and bring the dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Your dog's temperature should be allowed to slowly return to normal once cooling has begun. A dog that's cooled too quickly may become hypothermic. Even if your dog appears to be fully recovered, the veterinarian needs to check to determine if the heatstroke caused any damage to your dog's kidneys and liver. The effects of heatstroke can continue for 48 to 72 hours longer, even if your dog appears normal. William Grant, DVM, a veterinarian for 20 years and former president of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association, has treated hundreds of cases of heatstroke, ranging from mild to fatal. According to Grant, the most common cause of death following heatstroke is disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (blood coagulating throughout the body), or DIC, which can occur hours or days after the heatstroke episode. DIC can also be caused by pyometra or septicemia, but Grant says heatstroke is the most common cause. "Once a dog develops DIC, it may bleed in the thorax, abdomen, nose and intestine," Grant says. "Once the blood-clotting factors are consumed, there is an inability of the blood vessels to prevent leaking; the condition is almost always fatal." For this reason, follow-up veterinary care is essential following a heatstroke episode, even if your dog seems to be completely fine. Prevention is the Best Medicine The best treatment for heatstroke is prevention. Especially during the summer months, it's essential to be aware of the potential for heatstroke. Knowing the signs of heatstroke, and taking the necessary steps to prevent it, will ensure your dog can have a safe and active life year-round. 8 C & P Swissy Licks August 2011
