Hope you had nice and relaxing holidays. I am sure we all had plenty of food and goodies, which comes with the season. Now, there are no more excuses not to go outside and play with your pooch or go for a hike. After all the cold weather and snow is what our Swissies most like, so go out and have fun. SCONE will offer many activities throughout this year including pack hikes, outings, weight pulling, fun day and more. Since your Swissy is a working dog, I would like to know your interest in the various activities the club and the AKC is offering to strengthen the bond between you and your dog. We would be happy to teach you the basics to do Rally, Carting and small pack hikes. Please let the club know if this is something you would like to do. We then could come up with possible dates to accommodate everybody. I personally would like to see more participation from within the members of the club.

2 President s Message Cont d TWO WOLVES SCONE Upcoming Events One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil - It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good - It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: Which wolf wins? The old Cherokee simply replied, The one you feed. 4 December Long Island Pack Hike Saturday s Group By Laurie Carmody December 3rd and 4 th, 2012 New trails for the hike, great weather, and a good turn out. We had few non Swissies attend completing thier Novice Working Pack Dog titles! They were Amy and Rich with thier Aussie rescue "Earl" and Cattle dog mix "Lilly". Marianne with her English Shepherd "Monte". Bella the Border Collie with her Mom Alex. Paris the Rottie with Dori. SCONE members hiking for legs were: Kelly Nevin with Fender (WPD), Jessie Mahoney with Willow (NWPD) New title!, Laurie Carmody (me) with Dallas(NWPD), Alexandra Carmody with Comet (WPD), Robert Seibert with Hailey (WPD), Kathleen Scheitel with Ollie (NWPD). Along for the hike was 6 mo old "Bubby" with her Mom and Dad, Kristen and Kyle! Sunday s Group Thirsty Dallas We have another LI hike approved for March 9th and 10th 2013! 6 Cadwell Back to Back Hike Crazy dogs at the Start on Saturday X By Kelly Nevin January 19 th and 20 th, 2013 We modified our route since the trail down to Amherst from up on the hill in Pelham was very icy and would have required ice axes and somehow I think dogs and ice climbing gear aren t a good combo. On Saturday we had a group of 4 dogs. Bindi and Kathi participating in their first hike, we hope they come back for many more. Paris (the Rottie) and Dori for her title leg for her NWPD title, Molson with guest handler Mike for the title leg for his WPD title and Fender with me for a WPD leg. Mike and Molson On Sunday the 4 from Saturday were joined by Lester and Mary who completed his WPD title, Gus (the Leonberger) and Lynn for his first hike and Fury with one of his admirers for fun. Molson also switched it up and had Derek as a guest handler. We are doing a single day hike at Cadwell on 2/2, for anyone that missed the fun and wants to come out and join us. 8 Having serious fun in the snow Airborne, Yakuti is hoping to win this race: Peter Ziegler At the end of December we received a good amount of snow and I went with my daughter s dog Yakuti and my Swissy, Baril for a snow shoe hike leading to the top of the hill behind my house and beyond. The snow was perfect and the dogs and I had a very good time. To illustrate how much fun the dogs had, I snapped some pictures of the two dogs racing down a hill together. Here is Yakuti shooting out of the starting gate: But wait, here comes Baril out of the gate: 7

9 Baril is racing down the hill to catch Yakuti: We will properly never know who won the race, but who cares... they had a lot of fun. Oh, what happen now, CRASH!! Waiting for the well-deserved treat is for them priceless. 9

10 National Club Awards Below, please see the GSMDCA Annual Awards criteria. I have attached the Call for Nominations and the nomination form. Deadline for submission is March 1st. If you could post this to your listserves and send to your newsletter editors for inclusion in your next issue (if it comes out before March 1st, that is!), that would be great! Your clubs have many deserving individuals and we'd love to honor them. In advance, thank you so much for helping to get the word out! MJ Deadline: March 1 Procedure: To nominate individuals for awards, please use the Awards Nomination Form or simply write an or letter stating who you are nominating and why. Submit to: Please submit your nominations to the GSMDCA Board of Directors by board@gsmdca.org or via mail to Anna Wallace, 9168 Liberty Run Rd, Gutherie, OK Late nominations will not be accepted. Process: The GSMDCA Board is requesting your nominations of outstanding members of the GSMDCA to be honored for the following 2013 Annual Awards. These awards are for the year ending December 31, 2012 and will be presented at the 2013 GSMDCA National Specialty in Purina Farms, MO. If no qualified candidates are nominated the Board may elect not to present the award. Awards: Margaret Poole Lifetime Achievement Award To honor from time to time a person or team demonstrating a lifetime commitment to the GSMD breed and exemplary service to the GSMDCA. Nominees must have been active members in good standing of the GSMDCA for at least 15 years. Ambassador of the Breed Award To recognize purebred Swissies demonstrating extraordinary accomplishments as working/ service dogs, both perpetuating the breed s historical purpose by example and through motivating others in the interest and pursuit of preserving the GSMDs working heritage. Nominees must be purebred GSMD. (Note: Titles may be considered but are not to define qualification for this award.) Friend of the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Awarded to the individual who has done the most for the GSMD in the United States in the preceding year (2012). Exemplary Junior Award To honor the Junior who has demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship and dedication to the GSMD in the preceding year (2012) through participation in various events or community service that has contributed to the welfare of the breed or the GSMDCA. Parent or guardian of the Junior must be a member of the GSMDCA. AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award To honor the individual who deserves special recognition that has made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs, embodied the AKC Code of Sportsmanship, and has been an active and valued member of the GSMDCA. 10

If you do both days it is $35 for the 1st dog and $30 for each additional dog by the same handler This will be a wheels on carpet pull The weight pull will follow GSMDCA Rules and Regulations The track is indoors Each pull will be followed by a NWDA pull using NWDA rules. (Please see NWDA Flyer for details!) This means there is an opportunity to earn a total of 4 legs to go towards your titles. Tell your friends!!!!!
