We learned a great deal, met wonderful folks and had a lot of fun! And, getting out of Washington in March was a real plus! Katie s description of the cruise follows: One hundred eighty-seven K9 cruisers, representing breeders, judges, and dog sports enthusiasts from all across the United States, Canada, and abroad recently returned from the 6th annual K9 College Cruise. The K9 College Cruise, an annual event sponsored by the Lancaster Kennel Club and Nestle Purina, features seminars at sea with a faculty of experts during the week long event. This year s K9 College included 13 different seminars presented by a worldclass faculty that included Dr. Carmen Battaglia, Pat Hastings, Dr. Deborah Greco, Dr. Robert Van Hutchison, Dr. Pamela Reid, Dr. Allen Schoen, Patti Strand, and Corky Vroom. What people like most about the K9 College Cruise is the opportunity to meet and mingle with the faculty during the cruise. Unlike land-based seminars, the participants don t go home after the seminars and neither do the speakers! There are many opportunities for cruisers to chat with the experts during the week long event. One of the highlights of the event is the Dog Show at Sea, a fundraiser which supports the Canine Health Foundation. Participants submit photos of their dogs for the contest and cruisers vote for BIS (that s Best In Ship!) using money to cast their votes. Group and BIS winners are selected based on the dollar amount of votes collected for each dog. During the Dog Show at Sea presentation, ribbons are awarded to Group winners and a beautiful handmade Amish Quilt is award to the owner of BIS. The owner of BIS also has the honor of designating the CHF research project to receive the funds collected. This year s Dog Show at Sea raised an impressive $7,500 for CHF research. BIS winner was Archie, a Westie owned by breeder Margaret Payne from Virginia. The donation will go to the CHF current research project for the Association Mapping Study of Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease. 3

4 Emerging Respiratory Diseases ITB has been further complicated by the emergence of canine influenza virus (H3N8 or CIV), which was first discovered in racing Greyhounds in 2004, and by 2005, was detected in the pet population. CIV has been detected in at least 30 states and in Washington DC. CIV is highly contagious and because this is a new disease there is no natural immunity in the dog population. That means that all dogs exposed get infected and 80% show clinical signs. The 20% that do not show clinical signs still shed the virus and spread the disease. The concern about CIV is that the symptoms mimic those of ITB and it can be difficult to distinguish between the two diseases. Generally CIV is considered a much more severe disease that results in a sicker dog. The mortality rate is thought to be between 1%-5% of affected dogs. Transmission is the same as ITB. Affected dogs typically run a fever in addition to nasal discharge and coughing. Treatment includes supportive care and antibiotics. Dogs are considered contagious for 7-10 days after the onset of clinical signs. Two tests can be used to diagnose CIV, but timing is everything in getting an accurate diagnosis. A virus isolation test or PCR can be used between 2-6 days after exposure, and antibody testing (checking titers) can be used 8-10 days after exposure; however, there is a window in which both tests could be negative (7-10 days after exposure) leading to a false What You Need to Know About By Julie A. Roos, DVM Many myths and controversies surround canine infectious tracheobronchitis (ITB), also known as kennel cough, canine cough, canine contagious cough complex, and canine bordetellosis. ITS is the most common upper respiratory disease encountered by dog owners, but what is it exactly and what do dog owners need to know? Research has shown this disease is multifactorial and multiple infectious agents can be present in the same dog. ITB can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or a combination of the two. Bacterial causes of ITB include Bordetella bronchiseptica, Mycoplasma sp., and Streptococcus zooepidemicus among others. Viruses include canine parainfluenza, adenovirus type 2, canine respiratory corona virus, and herpes virus among others. How an individual dog responds to infection is dependent on his age, vaccination status, overall health, and the offending organisms present. Mild disease in one dog does not necessarily mean mild disease in another. Clinical Signs & Transmission Transmission of ITB occurs through aerosolizing the organisms by coughing and sneezing, nose to nose contact, sharing water bowls or chew toys, and by contact with contaminated hands and clothing. Clinical signs usually develop 3-10 days after exposure. Signs include the classic, dry honking cough with or without a gagging or a retching sound at the end of the cough, and ocular and nasal discharge. Typically a fever is not present unless pneumonia develops as a complications. Most dogs with ITB do not feel or act sick. Diagnosis & Isolation Diagnosis is usually based on clinical signs and a history of exposure. Blood tests and radiographs are typically unremarkable. There are some emerging respiratory diseases in dogs whose symptoms mimic those of ITB (see sidebar). Bacterial cultures and virus isolation tests can be run to help distinguish between ITB and these emerging respiratory diseases. Some of theses organisms can be normal residents of your dog s respiratory tract; therefore, these tests can be inconclusive and are not generally run unless the disease is severe. ITB is considered to be self-limiting, meaning when the disease is mild, treatment is not necessary. Affected dogs typically recover on their own within 7-14 days. Once clinical symptoms of ITB have developed, isolation from other dogs is critically important as ITB is a highly contagious disease. Even if your dog is asymptomatic he may still be able to infect other dogs. If you do need to take your dog to the veterinarian for care, leave your dog in the car until an exam room is ready and notify the staff ahead of time that you are concerned about 4

5 assumption that the dog did not have CIV. A vaccine has recently become available that decreases the severity of the disease and can help reduce shedding of the virus. Dogs need to get two vaccines within a 2-4 week period with an annual booster. The vaccine manufacturer recommends vaccination for at risk populations, similar to ITB. The veterinary community however, has not yet adopted this practice. Currently, vaccination is focused on known outbreak areas and your local veterinarian should know if you live in an area that has significant risk. CIV is definitely an infectious disease to pay attention to. H1N1 or swine flu has been diagnosed in both dogs and cats. However at this time there is no known dog-to-dog transmission. Testing is available for dogs with an appropriate history and clinical signs; routine testing is not recommended. All the known affected animals lived in households where multiple human family members were sick. With H1N1, affected animals had similar symptoms to those that people had and recovered with supportive care. There is no vaccine for H1N1 in animals. Veterinarians have no specific recommendations regarding H1N1, except to try to minimize contact with people who are known to be infected. At this time the veterinary community does not feel that H1N1 is of significant concern; however, the situation is being actively monitored. ITB. Dogs can be contagious from days to weeks and even months after infection depending on what organisms were involved. Since we typically do not know which organisms are responsible for disease in any individual animal it is recommended that your dog be isolated from other dogs for a minimum of 2 weeks once clinical symptoms resolve. Vaccines The only way to completely prevent ITB is to not allow your dog to have any exposure to other dogs. This is both extreme and undesirable. Vaccination is a good alternative to complete isolation. Vaccination does not prevent infection but does help limit the severity of the disease. There are two types of vaccines available. The intranasal vaccine goes in the nose and only one dose is required. The subcutaneous vaccine goes under the skin and initially two doses are needed 3-4 weeks apart. Both need annual boosters, but it is appropriate and safe to booster every 6 months if the situation warrants. The subcutaneous vaccine stimulates systemic immunity and the intranasal vaccine stimulates a local immune response in the nasal passages in addition to systemic protection. Only the most common disease causing organisms are in the ITB vaccines, typically B. bronchiseptica and parainfluenza virus. The technology is not yet available to make a vaccine against all organisms implicated in ITB. Your dog s core vaccines also include protection against adenovirus type 2. Vaccination or Bordetella and parainfluenza is not considered part of the core vaccines, but it should be given to those dogs considered at risk. At risk dogs definitely include show dogs. Risk includes any situation where there is a large, variable population of dogs including but not limited to kennels, daycares, shelters, trials, classes and dog parks. There are some veterinarians who clearly prefer one vaccine over another. There are also highly variable policies on vaccine requirements before boarding or entering shows and much of it is not based on scientific evidence. Vaccination upon entry at a boarding facility or the day before a show is not immediately helpful, although unfortunately it happens frequently. Regardless of the type of vaccine used the current recommendation is to give vaccines at least 1 week before potential exposure. Both the intranasal and subcutaneous vaccines have been shown to be effective in minimizing symptoms and reducing the period where the dog is contagious, but remember neither vaccine prevents disease. The intranasal vaccine can become effective in as few as 3 days. The subcutaneous vaccine needs 7 days to become effective. Occasionally, the intranasal vaccine can cause mild ITB signs. The intranasal vaccine can also be difficult to administer to an uncooperative patient. Concurrent use of both the intranasal and subcutaneous vaccine has been shown to induce stronger immunity in puppies that have not been previously exposed to ITB. Using both vaccines at the same time for older dogs has no additional benefit. Puppies can be vaccinated with the intranasal vaccine as early as 2-3 weeks of age. There is no scientific evidence to support the practice of vaccinating dogs that have already been exposed but are not yet sick or that have clinical symptoms. 5

6 Treatment Treatment of ITB is another area where there are many opinions and little research to support one protocol over another. Antibiotics can help shorten the duration of coughing by eliminating any bacterial component. Viruses are not responsive to antibiotics. Generally the antibiotic of choice is doxycycline for uncomplicated ITB. That said there are other antibiotics that will work and the choice is based on veterinary preference. Some veterinarians will also prescribe cough suppressants and this can be contraindicated if pneumonia is present. Bronchodilators are also used to theoretically help widen constricted airways, however the results are mixed and may only be helpful in severely affected patients. Steroids are probably the most controversial treatment choice. The idea behind giving steroids is to minimize any swelling caused by the disease process and coughing. Steroids are absolutely contraindicated if there is severe disease or pneumonia is present. In mildly affected patients it can be helpful in shortening the clinical duration of the disease, but is probably not necessary. Remember that this is usually a self-limiting disease and the body can take care of the infection in most cases. Conclusion The issues surrounding ITB are complex and varied and are being actively researched by the veterinary community. While there are differences among veterinarians about which vaccine to use, there is an overwhelming consensus that you should be vaccinating annually against ITB. Treatment specifics, should your dog get sick, can be discussed with your veterinarian. In addition, perhaps the most critical message of ITB is to isolate your dog once symptoms develop to prevent further spread of the disease. More research needs to be done to determine the best way to use the vaccines we currently have with the hope that more effective vaccines will ultimately be developed. Reprinted from Clean Run, May 2010 Not sure what kennel cough sounds like? Dogs can make an assortment of respiratory sounds. Usually a cough is very recognizable but it is important to be aware of another sound called a reverse sneeze. The reverse sneeze is often mistaken for a cough, for a choking fit, for sneezing, for retching or even for gasping for breath. In fact the reverse sneeze represents a post-nasal drip of tickle in the throat. It is considered normal for dogs and only requires attention if it is felt to be excessive. The point is to know a cough when you see one. A cough can be dry or productive, meaning it is followed by a gag, swallowing motion, or production of foamy mucus (not to be confused with vomiting). Here are some videos that might help: Video of coughing dog with productive cough: Click HERE Video of coughing dog with reverse sneeze: Click HERE Once clinical symptoms of ITB have developed, isolation from other dogs is critically important as ITB is a highly contagious disease. Even if your dog is asymptomatic he may still be able to infect other dogs. 6
