Beau Guest and Kimberly McMaster are amazing volunteers At Maui Humane Society, on any given day we have from dogs that are ready to receive attention, training and love and these are just the canines that are in our front kennels awaiting adoption. While these dogs are waiting for their new forever families to come find them, they are often confused and don t understand why they are here at the shelter. Our highly competent and caring staff is able to provide health care, high quality food, clean water, regular kennel clean-ups, comfortable beds, exercise and attention on a daily basis. But these animals need more, and as an understaffed non-profit agency, we often are only able to provide the necessary basics. Dogs need one-on-one time with people, training, and most of all, lots of love. It s from volunteers like Beau Guest that these dogs receive individualized affection and training. Beau has been volunteering as a dog-walker at MHS since April Coming 3, 4 and sometimes 5 mornings a week, Beau spends hours working with and walking the many orphaned dogs at MHS. His calm, neutral presence is perfect for working with under-socialized or timid animals, and Beau is always willing to go the extra mile and spend time with these difficult cases. He is truly here for the animals, and ensures they receive personalized attention. The staff at MHS is so grateful for his endless efforts, and appreciates his good attitude and love of dogs. Volunteers like Beau are able to help keep these animals exercised, trained and loved, but that s still not enough. These dogs need new homes, (continued on page 4) 1
2 Message from our CEO By Jocelyn Bouchard, CAWA There are many different types of animal welfare groups in our nation. Some operate shelters, some do not. Some take all animals that come through their doors; others limit admission or turn pets away with medical or behavioral issues. Sadly, there are few communities across the country where animal welfare groups work together successfully. Instead, they point fingers at each other claiming that none care as much as the other. Sometimes it seems like the only thing two animal welfare groups can agree on is what the third one is doing wrong. In many cases, it has become an argument over who cares more. Those that are part of organizations that don t euthanize are the good guys and those of us who operate open admission shelters, accepting every animal that comes to us are the big meanies - we euthanize, so we must not care enough. Successful collaborations realize that energy spent on finger-pointing is energy that is not being spent helping the animals. These communities have formed respectful working groups whose sole focus is working together to eliminate the euthanasia of adoptable pets - the ultimate goal of everyone in animal welfare. The fifteen various animal welfare groups in Maui County have recently started our own collaborative partnership and are starting to work together to do more for the animals. It is our hope that we can form a strong partnership, built on respect, to make a significant difference in the lives of animals on Maui and end the euthanizing of adoptable pets - united as a community. This will come in many forms pooling resources, united messaging and educational efforts, collaborative projects for spay-neuter, and working together to promote adopting pets versus purchasing from back yard breeders. It will take our entire community joining as one to eliminate the overpopulation of pets in Maui County and to ensure that all of our pets have loving forever homes. It will also take hard work, effective programs, and dedication. We are up for the challenge. We are excited that our fellow animal welfare groups have joined the collaboration and look forward to finally working together. Jocelyn Bouchard, CAWA HAPPY ENDING WISH LIST Below are items that will greatly help us do more for the animals. Please consider sending an extra donation or gifting an item or two from the list below. If you own a business or have special skills or services and can offer assistance for special projects, please call Lindsey at (808) ext 32. No gift is too small and every penny helps! Thank you so much for your continued support. After veterinary examination, it was determined his eye would have to be removed. Thanks to donations in our Hope Fund, Willie had surgery and was good as new though it did take him a little while to get used to the change in his visual perception. Willie lived at the shelter for over 100 days without complaint, bringing a sense of hope to staff and volunteers. In April, Willie was adopted by a wonderful woman on Oahu who hoped to have Willie work with special needs children. Since Willie hopped on a plane to our neighbor island, he spends his time snuggling, meeting new people, chasing the family cat, and playing with his squeaky Kong toy and best friend Golden Retriever at the beach! Now that s a happy ending! 2 OFFICE SUPPLIES: Walk-on Scale (for surgery clients) 4-drawer legal size filing cabinet Laptop Computer - new or slightly used Copy Paper Laminating Sheets Dry Erase Markers Gift Cards: Home Depot, Lowes, Office Max, Wal-Mart, Ace Hardware FACILITIES SUPPLIES: Refrigerator (2) - new or slightly used please Washer - new or slightly used please Bougainvillea plants Hibiscus plants Mock Orange plants Pet Pantry Items ~ cat and dog food, litter, treats Our Pet Pantry items are donated to needy families around the island to help them feed their pets.

CALLIE Now Lives: Kihei, HI HAPPY ENDING From temporary to permanent ohana, Callie was just one of the hundreds of kittens that came to the shelter during kitten season Like Callie and her sisters, many kittens are too small for adoption upon arrival and are placed in foster homes. Callie was placed with a foster mom who nursed her and her sisters back to health while battling weight loss and Upper Respiratory Infection for 6 weeks. Despite her struggles, Callie s personality always shined. Happy, playful and cuddly, Callie won the heart of a dedicated MHS volunteer once back from foster care and was adopted on June 8th. She now resides in Kihei as queen of the household. Her favorite activity is lounging: under the covers, in her litter box, inside of shoes, etc. She also enjoys chasing her tail and bringing joy to her new mom. 3
4 Helping our Dogs Shine!...continued from page 1 and they need help finding them! It is not uncommon to have a member of the public enter a shelter and become overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals available which is why we try to make it a little easier for potential adopters. Our innovative Hanging with the Humans program is a way for our volunteers to share their knowledge of the dogs personalities and help adopters find their perfect match. If a dog loves water or knows how to rollover, it can be hard to tell while it s in a kennel. Understanding this, volunteers are asked to fill out Hanging with the Humans forms about the animals they work with, detailing the unique traits, quirks, and skills of each animal. Kimberly McMaster, another stellar MHS volunteer, comes in every week and takes the information from those Hanging with the Humans forms and does two things: she enters all of the information into our shelter management system, and puts brightly colored stickers on each dogs individual kennel card portraying their characteristic categories. The different stickers put on each kennel card ( Knows Commands, Loves Water, etc.) make it easier for potential adopters to learn a little more about each animal. By entering this information into our shelter management system, the dogs complete personality profile is uploaded to Facebook and Petfinder, giving a more accurate view of the different animals we have available. With this program, a kennel with two black dogs in it is no longer just two black dogs; one is mellow, snuggly, and low-key, while the other is active, loves to fetch and knows commands. Both are great dogs, but now they each have a better chance of getting adopted by a family that is a perfect match and just for them. Beau and Kimberly are both exemplary volunteers committed to their tasks, always on time and displaying excellent attitudes. They are two of the lead volunteers that are helping to make the Hanging with the Humans program succeed but more than that, they are directly improving the lives of the canines that come to MHS for a second chance. Through Beau s walks, training and social time, and Kimberly s weekly baths and her commitment to data-entry, the dogs and puppies here at the shelter are more fulfilled. Not only do daily care, exercise and a nurturing environment improve their shelter experience, but Beau and Kim, along with many other volunteers, are enhancing their chances for adoption. Our walking and socializing volunteers are raising the dogs from a sea of orphaned faces to an array of shining individual personalities and helping them to learn the skills they ll need to succeed in a new home. Mahalo nui loa to all of the volunteers who spend time with our animals, especially to Beau and Kimberly for your dedication to the success of our dogs and our adoption programs! Our dogs and cats are touched every day by your compassion and so is our staff. Thank you does not seem to express how truly grateful we are for all you do. Are you interested in working with shelter dogs, helping with data-entry and office work, or assisting in some other way at MHS? Please contact Jennifer at Volunteer@MauiHumaneSociety.org or (808) X 14 for more information about our Volunteer Program. *For all of you cat lovers - we have a feline Hangin with the Humans program too! Stop by the shelter to find the purrrfect feline for you! MILO Now Lives: Haiku HAPPY ENDING Some matches are definitely made in heaven! Corgi Terrier, Milo and his new family are just that! After being at the shelter for only a week, Milo was swept into the arms of his new forever family. He now spends his time taking longs walks, snoozing indoors and winning hearts wherever he goes. Milo s family says he s the best dog they could ask for and they couldn t image life without him. We all need angels like Milo to touch our lives and remind us what fun and friendship are all about. 4

DUDLEY (Cat #27) The name Cuddly Dudley is pretty self explanatory, but the fact that I am still able to be so affectionate is another story. About 2 weeks ago I wandered into the wrong yard & the tip of my tail was bitten off. Luckily a kind neighbor saw it & rushed to my aid, unfortunately I was scared & ran away. Never giving up the kind lady spent a whole week trying to find me. As soon as she did, I was rushed right over to the shelter for help. Even while in the most pain of my life, I still managed to cuddle, make biscuits & give kisses, hence my name! Now I m recuperating & waiting for my new family to come get me. After what I went through I have really learned the power of never giving up & if you give me a chance I can show you just what that means! DENNIS (Dog #6D) Although I m just a puppy, I ve been at the shelter for longer than all but one of my roommates. My siblings & I were brought to the shelter in April when our last family decided there were too many of us. Now with all my brother & sisters in their new homes, I m wishing I ll be next. I know to most folks 4 months really doesn t seem that long, but to a puppy that has grown up without a home of my own, it feels like FOREVER! The best thing about this whole situation, is that you can change all that by giving me my very own happy ending. Just come down to the shelter & ask for Dennis, I ll be the adorable pup that you just can t pass up! Would you like to learn more about these or any other wonderful pets at MHS? Give us a call at (808) ext 26 or Adoptions@MauiHumaneSociety.org! **The Honorariums and Memorials included here are those we have received by 30 June We apologize if we have inadvertently omitted an entry. If you notice we have, please contact us at (808) x 34 or DRC@MauiHumaneSociety.org and we will ensure it to appear in our next newsletter.** 6

AMAZING MAGGIE - Still Looking For Her Forever Family MAGGIE (Dog #57) Aloha, I m Maggie and I really, really want to meet you! I like toys, walk well on a leash, and already know sit, stay and come when I'm called. I was found at the Kahului Harbor and brought to the shelter last March. Now I spend my days having a blast with my roommate, going on outings to to the beach, and sharing my love with anyone that will give me a second look. At 3 years old I m ready to settle down with a forever family. I m hoping that someone will look past my tough looking exterior and see the gentle, loving lady that is staring back behind these big brown eyes. Basically, I m an outgoing gal that s up for anything as long as it means I get to spend time with you! Maggie is an extra special girl and a favorite at MHS. We can t believe she hasn t been snatched up yet. Maggie has gone on many outings with us and she loves the water and waves. She actually jumps face first into them - the ultimate Maui beach girl. She is also great with kids and has been a favorite with our Animal Campers! She loves other dogs and baseball too! How could anyone resist her smile? Come by and meet her today! She s bound to melt your heart, just as she s done for all of us! 7
