est 1967 Kennel Club Reg 1968 Spring 2018 WELCOME I will start by apologizing for this late newsletter. I have taken over from Manda and have been struggling to get to grips with working on a Mac after years of producing a newsletter on a PC!! I will give you a brief introduction later in this newsletter if I get that far!! The club has had a busy year and there are lots of exciting things planned for the summer. Our AGM took place last October followed as usual by a feast provided by all our members and a Quiz ably run by Beryl We have a new charity Lowland Search and Rescue following an interesting presentation. Fizz Carter went off to Crufts with her miniature Dachshund Lily to compete in Obreedience (not a spelling mistake!) Read more later. A couple of dog health issues have been hitting the headlines Shellfish poisoning and Alabama Rot read more later. Finally, don t forget to keep Sunday 29 th April free for our 10 th Annual Sponsored Walk organized by Len Davis. For those members who attend Grayshott village hall keep checking the noticeboard at the front of the hall where all the club news and events will be displayed as well as the club s Facebook page and website. Information is also displayed at Priory for those attending training there. Inside this Issue 1 Welcome 2 AGM report 3 Our Sponsored Charity Lowland Search and Rescue 4 Your New Editor 5 Sponsored Walk note changed venue 5 Crufts Obreedience by Fizz Carter 6 Shellfish poisoning and Alabama Rot 7 Hampshire Rally 8 Are Agility Dogs Rabbits? 9 Data Protection AGM REPORT AND ACCOUNTS The AGM was held on 19 th October chaired by Sue Thornton. The Committee and Officers were unanimously re-elected although the Secretary did put out a plea for someone to take over the Newsletter. After the meeting, in a moment of rash folly I volunteered and I hope that I will be able to contribute. Please let me have any articles, reports, snippets of information and other gossip that you think might interest other members. me, Jenny Smith at: jennyilett@hotmail.co.uk 1

The Club continues to be in good financial health and has been able to make a generous donation to our charity, Medical Detection Dogs of 800. Lowland Search and Rescue and Labrador Lifeline each gave interesting presentation and members voted to support Lowland Search and Rescue for this year. Money will be raised by our sponsored walk as well as raffles and collections at our events. Please support this good cause in whatever way you can. FORTHCOMING EVENTS 29 th April 2018 Sponsored Walk 7 th May 2018 Hampshire Rally 28 th May 2018 Rowledge Village Fayre & Dog Show 16 th June 2018 Frensham Country Fayre & Dog Show 8 th July 2018 HDDTC Summer BBQ & Dog Games 12 th August Woolbeeding NT & Fun Dog Show LOWLAND SEARCH AND RESCUE Lowland rescue currently use air-scenting dogs that are trained to national standards to find people. The charity is also developing dogs that work by ground-scenting which is particularly useful when there is a known location to work from. Across the UK 35 dogs are currently operational. It takes over 2 years for most dogs to pass the strict assessment criteria which gives the maximum probability that they will find a vulnerable person in a given search area. The process of training a dog is one which requires full commitment from their handler. Unlike police dogs, Lowland Rescue dogs are pets first then trained by their owners who must be experienced Lowland Rescue team members. Handlers are professional volunteers who are not paid for their time, fuel or personal equipment. They can work in a wide variety of environments including woodland and farmland. LEN S 10 TH WALK ANNUAL SPONSORED Please make a note in your diaries for Sunday 29 th April, when we are doing our 10 th Annual Sponsored Dog Walk. This year we are planning a circular walk of 5 miles around Hankley Common and The Flashes, starting at 10.30am. It s an interesting walk across the golf course, past the Lion s Mouth and around the Devils Jumps and then skirting the Little Pond at Frensham. Apart from twice crossing the Tilford Rd, the walk is entirely cross-country, so the dogs can roam freely. We lunch at the Duke of Cambridge, a really friendly pub with large outdoor seating. Weather permitting, it should be a most enjoyable way of raising funds for this year s charity, Surrey (Lowland) Search & Rescue. Sponsorship forms will be available in both Grayshot and Frensham. Please do your best to gets lots of sponsors! Committee members should be able to answer your questions, or you can Len Davis on lendavis@talk21.com PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT THE WALK ORIGINALLY ADVERTISED. THE CANALSIDE AT RIPLEY IS THICK WITH IMPASSABLE MUD! YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN FLASH AFTER OUR ARBORTIVE TRIAL RUN!! 2

YOUR NEW EDITOR! Hi! Some of you may have known me in the past as Jenny Ilett with Heinz 57 rescue Lucky and Cavalier/poodle cross Storme. Lucky progressed well in the club, attaining his Gold Good Citizen s award, representing the club at the Hamphshire Rally as well as enjoying agililty. I said goodbye to him in 2016 as he approached his 16 th birthday. A wonderful dog but many fellow club members will remember walks with us when Lucky went off on a deer hunt and we were left waiting! Club instructors suggested I made myself more exciting I still haven t mastered competing with a running deer! Storme never quite got over her start in life in a puppy farm and was too nervous to leave my side so I ended up jumping the agility jumps with her! I was not prepared to clamber over the see-saw or through the tunnel so we gave up. I had the most wonderful loyal companion for 12 years until her heart gave out last autumn. When I remarried 4 years ago I acquired a Step dog, Boo, a 4 year old, very small Jack Russell terrier, totally untrained but a delightful character who has now acquired a little bit of training! Work in progress! Last year I decided I needed a bit of a challenge so a cuddly little bundle of Working Cocker called Isla joined the household. She is a delight but at times has the renowned attention span of a gnat! I know she knows what she should be doing but I do get quite a lot of the look that says: Who? Me? Why? 3

OBREEDIENCE FINAL AT CRUFTS: 8 TH MARCH 2018 In 2015 the Kennel Club introduced Obreedience, a new type of obedience to Crufts. 4 dogs of one breed compete against other teams and the exercises consist of the following: Team Mini Mayhem meet up and train alongside The Blue Heelers (ACD). In 2016 we entered 3 heats and did not get to the final. Team heelwork (the idea of this is to be as synchronised as possible!) followed by individual tasks Scent Send to bed Retrieve Stop on recall and play There are a number of heats throughout the year and 10 teams with the highest accumulated scores enter the final, which takes place at Crufts the following spring. Lily joined Team Mini Mayhem in In 2017 The Blue Heelers were in the final and I was going along to support them. Team Mini Mayhem had not made it to the final, or so we thought. On the Monday of Crufts week I received a call from Stella asking if I could take Lily to Crufts the Lagotto team had to pull out as 2 bitches had come on heat and they only had 1 reserve listed. Stella Smyth, our team leader had been looking to put a team together since I knew Stella as Lily s breeder Anne is great friends with her (and me). Anne s daughter, Steffi is also on our team and Stella has two dachshunds, one of whom is handled by Christina. Lily is besotted with Dusty (Stella s dapple Dachshund boy). Stella breeds Australian Cattle Dogs (ACD) in addition to owning Dachshunds. We had a fabulous day at Crufts and the icing on the cake was to have both our teams in the final together. There is great camaraderie between all the teams, which is really great. Team Mini Mayhem may have come 10 th but our group heelwork was 5 out of 10 with no recent practice and Lily did get top marks for her stop on recall. Our first heat this year is on 22 nd April, so we had better get practising! Lily & I will be forever grateful to all the wonderful HDDTC trainers since puppy class nearly 5 years ago, who have given us fabulous training, confidence and fun. 4

Teams in Running order and Results Team Group Scent Send to bed Stop on recall Retrieve Total Heelwork & play The Ratcatchers (Manchester Terriers) Hugabern (Bernese Mountain Dog) Poodle Training Club (Toy Poodle) The Russelers (Jack Russell Terriers) Lively Lads (Labrador Retrievers) Smooth Operators (Smooth Collie) Dachtastic (Miniature Long Haired Dachshund) Canny Cavaliers (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) Team Mini Mayhem (Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund) The Blue Heelers (Australian Cattle Dog) I am sure that I speak for all of our committee and members when I offer you all my congratulations! We look forward to next year s report! closely to ensure that they do not eat any dead fish, starfish or other marine life that has been PARALYTIC SHELLFISH POISONING You may have been aware of a number of dogs becoming ill after walking on the beaches of Norfolk earlier this spring. This was the result of unusually high numbers of marine species being washed up following stormy weather. Testing of washed up fish and crustaceans and the postmortem of one of the dogs identified naturally occurring Paralytic Shellfish Toxins as the cause of death for 2 dogs. Although the Environment Agency monitors the levels of this toxin with regard to the human food chain, the advice given is to watch your dog washed up on the beach. If they do, and show any signs of illness, seek veterinary assistance immediately keeping any vomited material for possible analysis. ALABAMA ROT OR CUTANEOUS AND RENAL GLOMERULAR VASCULOPATHY (CRGV) This disease causes skin lesions and can also result in fatal kidney disease. The cause is not known but most dogs that need treatment have been walked in muddy woodland very hard to avoid at 5

this time of year! Cases have been reported in the New Forest, The South Downs National Park and closer to home around Guildford. The best prevention is to ensure that mud is washed off your dog after muddy walks and to be vigilant for signs of sores. Skin sores are generally on paws and lower legs but can be on the face, mouth tongue and lower body. If you do not know of any other cause, e.g. injury, it is best to contact your vet. Kidney failure on average is 3 days after lesions appear but can be anything from 1 to 10 days. THE HAMPSHIRE RALLY 7 TH MAY 2018 The Hampshire Rally has been running for over 30 years. The seven Registered Dog Clubs that organise and run the event are Andover, Winchester, Petersfield, Haslemere, Eastleigh, Basingstoke, Newbury and West End. The next event will take place at War Memorial Park, London Road, Basingstoke on Monday 7 th May The eight Clubs will get together for a dog obedience show with the aim of raising as much money as possible for the nominated charity, decided by each club in turn. Haslemere last chose the Charity in 2012 and it will be our turn again in Last year the Animal Health Trust and the Cinnamon Trust each received a donation of 375. The main fundraiser is a raffle for prizes donated by each participant. The Clubs compete for three shields, the Harry Firth Shield and the Yvonne Gray Shield for the best senior and junior teams and the Broadwood Shield for the overall winning team. Please mark 7 th May 2018 in your diary now and come along and enjoy a great day out with us on the day. We will be looking for as many participants as possible to represent the club in the events below. We will also need volunteers to coordinate the catering and organise the putting up of our tents and our ring on the day. HDDTC will be entering Class One to Four below plus Class 8 Class One Starters. For dogs, owners & handlers eligible for Pre-Beginners/Introductory at Open/Championship Obedience Shows. Extra commands allowed for non B and C dogs ARE AGILITY DOGS RABBITS? This was the question I think many of our agility handlers were asking after our fun competition evening held at the Priory on Monday 26 th March before our break for Easter. Our trainers Jan and Alison had put together four fun courses for all our agility handlers to enter. Everyone from the agility section turned up at 7.00pm to help put out the courses and the competition began. The courses were split into foundation/beginner and competition/advanced. In spite of themselves the competition spirit was definitely present in many of our handlers. Rosettes were awarded in some courses to eighth place with additional prizes for the handler and dog for first place. The highlights of the evening were the two handlers and one dog course. In this course one dog completed a round of 15 obstacles consisting of a mix of jumps and tunnels. For the first seven obstacles the dog was handled by one member and for the remaining course the dog being run by another handler. It was an absolute delight watching the handler who did not own the dog trying to encourage the dog to complete their element of the course. There was a roar of encouragement when Judy Steel who had teamed up with Sue Oliver and Pumpkin got Pumpkin over the final jump. For their efforts Sue and Judy were placed and each received a rosette. So why are our agility dog rabbits? Our final course of the evening was the tunnellers. This course consisted of one jump and five tunnels but the dogs had to go through the tunnels 12 times. Although the course was numbered and the handlers had an opportunity to walk the course, the various changes in direction left both dogs and handlers confused as to which was the next tunnel and which tunnel they had just completed. After completing this course none of our handlers should have any issues with getting their dogs to go through tunnels. Everyone had a great evening Jan and Alison did a wonderful job of devising and running the courses so a big thank you to them. Thanks also go to Judy who run a raffle during the evening with the first prize being a large Easter egg. DATA PROTECTION New legislation is coming into force next month regarding the storage of personal data. The club will be receiving guidance shortly from the Kennel Club as to the implications and requirements of the new law. It is thought that we will require some modification to our Membership Forms giving specific permission for essential information to be stored. I am sure it will all become clear in due course and in effect there is no change to the existing principles which must be adhered to. 7

POLITE NOTICE! Please note that to secure your place on our Thursday evening courses the payment of course fees should be paid two weeks prior to the commencement of the course by cash, cheque or direct bank transfer. If paid by direct bank transfer sort code account number please quote surname as the reference. Your trainer will remind you when the next payment will be due. We have a large number of handlers waiting to join courses. If you are unable to take your place on a course could you please advise us so we may offer the place to someone on the waiting list. In the event that you do not take up a course place within two weeks (or have advised as to the absence) we will offer your place to someone else.
