14 Part 4 Susan is reading a passage in the library. Read the first part of the passage. Answer Questions 1 5. Today, the environment is a hot topic in the media newspapers, 1 television and the Internet. Without a healthy environment, life on our planet will become very difficult. We need to save the environment. However, people are cutting down too many trees. Animals, like Indian Elephants, are in danger too because people have 5 hunted them or taken away their homes. Global warming is also a problem. This is where temperatures around the world go up. Ice melts and sea levels rise. There are places with lots of water while others have droughts. Global warming happens because we have more and more carbon dioxide and other gases in the air. These gases raise temperatures because they trap more of the sun s heat. Choose the best answer by blackening the circle. 1. What does our planet (line 3) refer to? A. the Internet B. the Earth C. the topic D. the media Why are Indian Elephants in danger? A. People keep them as pets. B. People are killing them. C. They eat a lot. D. They are not strong enough TSA-ENG-6ERW

16 Read the second part of the passage. Answer Questions There are other problems too. Pollution from factories can cause acid rain. Acid rain can damage buildings and bridges, so they deteriorate faster than usual. It also pollutes many lakes, rivers and streams and kills wildlife nearby. As a result, there may be fewer wild animals. 1 5 To help save the environment, we should try to find cleaner energy. Solar power (energy from the sun) and wind power are much less polluting. We should save energy by reducing the use of air conditioning and turning off lights when they are not in use. Recycling is also a good way to help the environment. Travelling by bicycle can help too and is a good way to keep fit. Choose the best answer by blackening the circle. 6. Acid rain. A. is not a problem any more B. is harmful to our environment C. is only found in lakes and rivers D. helps trees grow faster than usual 7. Read line 3: they deteriorate faster than usual. This means that the buildings and bridges may. A. fall down B. become smaller C. be safer than before D. be cleaner than before TSA-ENG-6ERW
17 8. According to lines 2 5, wild animals are killed by. A. hunters B. other wildlife C. polluted water D. buildings and bridges 9. We should use more solar power and wind power because. A. they give less energy B. they are more polluting C. they are more expensive D. they are better for the environment 10. What is the main idea in the last paragraph?
