1 The Cobra Chronicles Koko Head School 189 Lunalilo Home Road Honolulu HI (808) Volume No. 10 Issue No. 3 Date November 16, 2010 PRINCIPAL RINCIPAL'S CORNER Dear Koko Head Families and Friends, This Thanksgiving, we are truly appreciative for the hard work by the students and staff. On November 1, 2010, SCC Chair Rita Hanohano, Friends of Koko Head President Mary Jean Bresnan, Student Council Presidents Coby Yoshino and Sophie Yamamura, PCNC Celise Nakakura, Teachers Mary Jane Taniguchi, Jackie Asato, Margie Davis, Leimomi Chun and I attended the Hawaii Distinguished Schools Program sponsored by Frito-Lay of Hawaii and the Hawaii State Department of Education. On behalf of the school community, we received the Annual Achievement Award for Koko Head and the Hawaii Blue Ribbon School Banner. We also brought back a check for $3,000. We are also thankful for the generous support we receive from our families and friends. Our appreciation extends further to the parents and community for their valuable participation, gifts of service hours and monetary donations on the many fronts listed below. * 99% of parents attended the Parent-Teacher Conferences. * Numerous parents volunteer in the classrooms and library. * Friends of Koko Head sponsored our 55 th Anniversary Luau *Koko Head passed its annual fire inspection conducted by the Hawaii Kai Firefighters *Our families have participated in our ongoing recycling. The School Community Council sponsored a Breakfast Meeting on October 29, 2010 at 7:00am. About 200 people attended and 155 breakfasts were sold. SCC Chair Mrs. Hanohano opened the meeting with a story of Koko Head over the last 55 years, then SCC Teacher Representative Margie Davis presented our school s Hawaii State Assessment (HSA) data, and I shared current highlights of our school as we look forward to School Year We will continue to keep you posted on the Consolidation of Schools Study. There will be a Kaiser Complex Community Meeting this Wednesday, November 17 at 6:30pm at Kaiser High School Cafeteria. We will continue to keep our families posted through our listing. The Luau on the Lawn on Saturday, November 6, was such a huge success. We sold over 550 dinner tickets and grossed over $27,000 in raffle tickets and silent auction sales. It was certainly a wonderful community event honoring our phenomenal Principal Miss Lum of 30 years. Our heartfelt Mahalo to the Friends of Koko Head, Faculty, Staff and entire school community. All proceeds will benefit the children of Koko Head Elementary, funding our PE Teacher, Music Teacher, Language Teacher, books and other school programs. As the holiday season will soon take center attention, let s focus our efforts on enjoying the time with families and friends. Please mark your calendar with school being dismissed at 2:15pm on Thursday, December 16, We will greet your children back to school on Tuesday, January 04, 2011 All the best during this holiday season from my family to yours. 2 WE NEED YOU! BOE BOE ANNOUNCES PUBLIC HEARING DATE There are two upcoming meetings of high importance that concern the school consolidation issue. The first meeting is an informational meeting where parents and community members are invited to learn more about the consolidation report regarding Kaiser Complex schools. The MEETING will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kaiser High School Cafeteria. Highlights of the consolidation report will be shared and Assistant Superintendant Randy Moore will be available to answer any questions related to the process. Also, the BOE's Public Hearing regarding the Kaiser Complex potential consolidation was just announced. The PUBLIC HEARING is scheduled for December 15, 2010 at 6:30 pm at the Kaiser High School Cafeteria. It is highly recommended that you attend the November meeting first to obtain the information that will help you when attending the Public Hearing. The Public Hearing will be your only opportunity to voice your opinion prior to the BOE making their decision. Please mark your calendars and we hope you can attend this meeting. Everyone was excited for the gala Luau which served to commemorate our 55th Anniversary, Ms. Lum's 30 years as Principal and our most recent Blue Ribbon Award. For 55 years, Koko Head has been educating, mentoring and guiding Hawaii Kai keiki. Some notable alumni from Koko Head are Mazie Hirono and Bruno Mars. There were 550 dinners sold and diners enjoyed a dessert buffet filled with donated treats. It was a fun filled night and we thank each and every person that planned, volunteered and attended this event.
5 Water Pollution Prevention at Koko Head Elementary School Koko Head Elementary School is located on Lunalilo Home Road in Honolulu. Storm water discharges from the campus flow via the small Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) into the City Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) MS4 and the City Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) MS4, which outlet to Maunalua Bay, a Class A marine water (see Figure 2). The median annual rainfall at the school is approximately 11.7 inches. The school is located in a residential neighborhood with Koko Head Neighborhood Park on the south, Lunalilo Home Road on the west, Kalaniana ole Highway to the north, and residential lots to the west and east. Based on a site visit conducted in July 2009, issues of importance for storm water quality on this campus include potential storm water pollution from grounds-keeping practices, occasional littering, occasional illegal dumping, campus cleaning and maintenance, and occasional animal waste. As a requirement of the public education and outreach component of MS4, Koko Head Elementary is distributing educational materials to the community about the impacts of storm water discharges on local water bodies and the steps that can be taken to reduce storm water pollution. More information can be found on the City and County of Honolulu website
6 Public Involvement and Participation 9 POLLUTION TIPS 1. Keep It Clean - It is your responsibility to keep sidewalks, curbs and gutters in front of your property clean. 2. Dump No Waste - Stencil storm drains with the message, "Dump No Waste, Protect Our Waters... For Life," and keep waste materials fro polluting our waterways. 3. Do It Right - Use water-based paint and dispose properly. 4. Don't Be An Oil Drip - Identify and fix oil leaks on your vehicles; clean up drips and spills with absorbent materials; dispose of use oil in oil change box. 5. Car Wash - Wash your car on the lawn instead of the driveway, wash where runoff drains to vegetation so the water can soak into the ground or wash in a designated car wash. If you wash your car on a City street, use soap sparingly and minimal water. 6. Cover Up - Prevent soil and debris from leaving your property by replacing bare soil with vegetative cover or mulch and covering temporary stockpiles with tarps. Plant right for your site. 7. Read The Label - Read and follow the label on all fertilizers and pesticides. The label is the law. 8. Yard Maintenance - Gather leaves, grass clippings, and yard trimmings for proper disposal or composting. Practice smart watering. Use open pavers, or other permeable paving that lets the rain soak into the soil. Minimize impermeable paving. 9. Pick It Up - Remove and dispose of pet waste before you leave an area. Laws and Ordinances The Federal Clean Water Act gave the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to implement water pollution control programs. Local statutes and ordinances address compliance and enforcement of the EPA's mandates. The Revised Ordinances of Honolulu, Section (a) Environmental Quality Control - Violation states, "It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge or cause to be discharged any pollutant into any drainage facility which causes a pollution problem in state waters, or causes a violation of any provision of the City NPDES permit or the water quality standards of the State of Hawaii."
