2 HOG Tracks Newsletter 2
3 You have to agree that this year seems to have just blown by, with only 2 months left, they re always the busiest. I hope the rides and events this year were to every ones liking. Setting up the ride schedule for the first quarter of next year is at the top of the to-do list so get your suggestions turned in at either the chapter box at MRHD or e=mail to any chapter officer. Holiday time is coming with Thanksgiving and Christmas not far behind. Don t forget that we are having the Christmas Party at the Elk Lodge in Kingman and that Hack will be playing at the party it s going to be great and not one to miss. Watch for the flyer and get your money in by the deadline (all has to be prepaid so we know how many are coming). I look forward to seeing you at the meetings and on the rides. RIDE SAFE (IT S NOT THE DESTINATION, IT S THE RIDE) Dan Weaver 15 Riding-In-Traffic Tips Basics? Sure. But keeping them fresh in your cranial RAM could be the difference between riding tomorrow and The Long Nap Close your eyes and recall your last ride in heavy traffic. Imagine the vehicles surrounding you, crowding you, cutting you off. Imagine yourself monitoring closing speeds, reading street signs, noticing and anticipating traffic lights. Then imagine guessing what pedestrians will do, or how slippery that painted line might be. And those drivers with cell phones, newspapers or screaming kids to deal with...imagine trying to guess what they're going to do. Riding in traffic can be a nightmare, especially for street-riding newcomers. Is it any wonder so many motorcyclists crash and burn while riding on congested streets? It's amazing how many different tasks motorcyclists deal with on a normal traffic-choked commute. Doing it successfully means processing a multitude of items at once and reacting correctly to each. Doing it wrong can mean roadkill--the human kind. Here are 15 smart strategies for dealing with traffic-choked streets. Watch drivers' heads and mirrors Watching the head movements of drivers through their windows and mirrors is an excellent way to anticipate sudden moves. Most drivers won't lunge left or right without first moving their heads one way or another (even if they don't check their mirrors). Trust your mirrors, but not totally Your bike's mirrors can be lifesavers, but they don't always tell the entire story even if they're adjusted properly. In traffic, always buttress your mirror-generated rear view with a glance over the appropriate shoulder. Do it quickly and you'll add an extra measure of rear-view and blind-spot knowledge to your info-gathering tasks. Remember Safety first Have a great ride. (More to come next Issue) 3
4 WIN - A $25 gift card to Mother Road if you can find YOUR National HOG number some were hidden in this newsletter. ( Here is a sample number this is what it will look like ) Contact Sean Martin at silverstreak5426@yahoo.com with your name and national HOG number for verification. There was NO winner for the last newsletter. Unfortunately, our kayak and picnic event was cancelled because we could not get a commitment on a group rate. The owner was out of state and her employee was unable to commit to a rate. We found out the rate would have been $35.00 per person, up from $30.00 last year. However, we are looking at doing a spring/summer 2017 trip in May or June. At the Officers meeting it was decided that if you ride, you will get credit, AND if you drive AND BRING FOOD, you will also receive credit. The Christmas Party is December 1 0 th at the Elks Lodge, 900 Gates Ave, Kingman. I personally like this location because the bar is where it should be and not in another room. Gina needs money by the end of November, $40.00 per couple and $25.00 single. She will send out a flier with names of motels close to the Elks for those who plan on staying overnight and with more information on the party. Auction items are desperately needed. This year, all proceeds from the auction will go to our charity, For the Luv of Paws, a no-kill shelter. This year Garlin Hackney, aka Hack, will be joining us with his band. According to Google, Hack is a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and a Nashville Recording Artist, check him out on You Tube. YOU DON T WANT TO MISS THIS EVENT!! Have a Happy Thanksgiving and ride safe. Sherrie Schoepke Barry LOH 4

6 This member spotlight really isn t on a member, but rather on our charity that our chapter has adopted. In 2005, Cherie DaLynn started For the Luv of Paws. At that time, there were no places that abused, neglected or rescued animal could go, that would not be eventually euthanized. She purchased 10 acres of land right off Oatman road, past Cool Springs. It is fully licensed and permitted by the state of Arizona, and is recognized by the I.R.S. as a non profit organization. On average, the sanctuary will have 175 dogs and cats waiting to be adopted. Some of her cats go and stay at Petco, at her cattery, so they also have a chance to be adopted. Some of her animals that have special needs or disabilities that will never or can t be adopted, live out the rest of their lives with Cherie, in a loving and caring environment. Before any animal gets adopted, Cherie will do a home inspection of the animals future parents. She makes sure they have a secured fenced yard to play in, be current on immunizations, and they have to be spayed or neutered. Some 50 volunteers help Cherie keep the sanctuary up and running as well as her thrift store which is located in downtown Kingman. Proceeds from our annual Christmas auction help Cherie with this amazing place. So, thank you to our members who buy things at the auction, and also this is why we really push hard for members to donate items for the auction. The more we have, the more we give. Last year, we were able to give Cherie $ If you are thinking of getting another pet for your home, please consider looking at The Luv of Paws. You can reach them at
