3 Page 3 Shepherd News President s Message Yet again we have lost a valued and long standing member of our club with the passing of Mr Juergen Neddermeyer on 22 nd March Juergen was a founding member of the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia and was a tireless and passionate worker the breed in this country. On behalf of all Committee and members offer sincere condolences to Joylene, Martin Presidents Report and Helga at this difficult time. May Juergen always look down upon us. The National Show and Trial being held in Queensland this year is fast approaching. To those members attending, I wish you safe travels and hope you enjoy success. Our own National is in the planning stages with the raffle already started by Salvatore Pittelli. The prizes are fuel vouchers with first prize being $ Fuel Voucher, second prize $ fuel voucher, third prize $ fuel voucher and fourth prize $ fuel voucher. There are 1000 tickets printed at a cost of $5.00 each with all proceeds going towards the running of the National. The club will be participating in the Adelaide Animal Expo being held at Wayville from April 2017 so come along and say hello to those manning the stand. 4 Page 4 First Vice President The obedience training school is running very smoothly, thanks to the Head Trainer, Robert MacPherson and his team of instructors. Robert has his own style of leadership and is methodical in his approach and expectations of the training school. He now has a healthy quota of instructors which makes his role a little easier. All instructors now have yellow instructor shirts to wear making them easily identifiable to all. The Adelaide Animal Expo will be held at Wayville Showgrounds on April The GSDC will have a stand at the expo so we hope to have you visit us and stop for a chat. The German Shepherd Dog Club of S.A. Inc, is a single breed dog club for Pedigree German Shepherds only. We welcome all new prospective members and require them to produce their Certificate of Pedigree when joining. The club is aware that members may, at times, choose to take in another addition to the family, be it a another puppy or older dog and bring them to club for training. Please be aware that any German shepherd dog that is brought out onto the grounds for training must be pedigree and their owners may be asked to produce a Certificate of Pedigree as evidence of this. 6 Page 6 FLEAS Fleas undergo complete metamorphosis. The life cycle, or stages, of the flea is composed of the egg, larval, pupal and adult stages. Cycle length ranges from several weeks to several months and is largely dependent upon environmental conditions. Eggs Fleas lay between four to eight eggs after a meal, with the highest concentrations of laying occurring within the last few days of the female s life. Unlike the eggs of some other parasites, flea eggs are not sticky and usually fall to the ground immediately upon being laid. Flea eggs hatch into larvae within one to 12 days. Larvae Flea larvae are approximately 3 to 5.2 mm long and are semitransparent white in color. The larval stage lasts from four to 18 days, after which larvae spin silken cocoons and enter the pupal stage. The pupal stage may be complete within three days, or it can last as long as one year. Flea larvae hatch from eggs that were laid by a female flea and have fallen off the animal host. Once away from the host, the larvae seek out shaded locations such as cracks in the floor, in carpets, in pet bedding or protected locations under and in furniture. Flea larval survival depends on relative humidity and temperatures. Since dehydration is fatal to flea larvae, they will not survive relative humidity less than percent or soil temperatures greater than 95 degrees Fahrenheit. However, if outdoor larvae will survive in cool, shaded areas and do very well in crawl spaces. In environments of suitable humidity and temperatures, fleas will develop year round.

7 Fleas Cont d Page 7 Flea larvae complete three larval instars (stages) and, depending on their environment, will range in length from about 3-5 mm long. Flea larvae have no eyes and no legs. Their body is maggot-like and whitish, but turns progressively darker as the larvae feeds on feces excreted by the adult fleas. Other than feces, larvae will feed on various types of organic matter such as food particles, dead skin, dead insects and feathers. Flea larvae do not take a blood meal directly from a host, unlike adult fleas. The flea s larval stage is completed within about 4-18 days. One of the last activities of flea larvae is to spin a silken cocoon and then enter the pupal stage. Controlling flea larvae usually involves using vacuums to remove, use of insect growth regulators and dust formulations that cause desiccation of the larvae. Adults Adult fleas begin searching for food when they emerge from the pupal stage. While fleas are noted for their jumping abilities, they will remain stationery when a suitable host is located. Females begin laying eggs within 48 hours of the first feed, thus beginning the life cycle again. Cold environments cause eggs to perish before hatching. Humidity below 45 percent will kill larvae. Fleas in the pupal stage will become adults more rapidly in the presence of warmth and high humidity. 13 Page 13 Hans-Juergen Neddermeyer - A Tribute. Dear Joylene, Martin, Helga, and friends of Juergen Neddermeyer, I am honoured to be part of what today is: A celebration of a well lived long life of a man who touched all of us in a positive way. Juergen, as we have already heard emigrated from Germany and like many new immigrants worked very hard, established himself and then went on to set up and run a most successful bricklaying business. In parallel with his drive for working hard and passion for his business, his other great passion was his love of the German Shepherd Dog! This passion saw him first involved with the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia in In 1969, he became its main stay due to the untimely death of its founder the late Roy Brabham. In those days the Council had little influence or effect, but Juergen had a vision to see the council mirror the breeds parent club in Germany. Together with the late Wally Riemann and Max Stokes and together with a growing group of idealists, commenced to be active with regards to the lifting of the import ban on German Shepherd Dogs, better known in those days as Alsatians. Juergen also saw the need to have a Council President who would be a very good communicator, amicable, well known in the all breeds circles and could share his vision for the Council: he himself never wanted to be the Councils leader! At that time he persuaded Louis Donald, a very young, successful breeder and exhibitor of GSD, who is here with us today, to become President: Juergen s search for a talented person to carry the organisation forward proved correct as Louis held the position for 18 years- in this period Juergen played a significant role in contributing and supporting his fellow members of executive, of which: Barry O Rourke and his close friend James Rodger are here today, in driving and achieving major change in an hostile anti GSD environment where in effect the English Kennel Club model and regulations were in place by default. It must be said that the changes as enacted by Council during that period acted as drivers much later for other Breed Councils to follow. Juergen, was also a breeder and exhibitor of GSD. Once the import ban was finally lifted, his passion and love for the breed saw him invest large sums of money by importing a number of male dogs from Germany. This act along with others who did the same in those days was his way of kick starting the breed s development: The kennel, Adelora, as shared with Joylene, Martin, Lyle and the late Jan Strahan is a most successful kennel albeit not as active as it was 5 years ago. This passion for showing and breeding saw him also join the peer group of our organisation as a most respected GSD Judge and Breed Surveyor. Juergen, never wanted the spotlight and or craved attention. He was in many ways, the conscience of the organisation; he was determined and passionately added to any debate. He was an excellent mediator, calm but at times could, due to the nature of the debate voice his frustration with a forceful succinct common sense precise that would drive the discussion back to the point and resolution had.

14 Hans-Juergen Neddermeyer - A Tribute. Cont d Page 14 To those younger enthusiasts, many are here today, he was always engaging and encouraging. He was also a mentor to many of us who took on the next step and became Judges and Breed Surveyors: his critique of us as judges was always positive and insightful. I was always impressed with his stance ringside, cigarette in hand: he was a meticulous recorder of results and could provide an in detail analysis of judging at day s end! Juergen s dedication and work for the breed, the Council and the German Shepherd Dog Club of South Australia over 40 years saw him awarded that clubs Life Membership and the Councils Special Distinguished and Meritorious Award and Service Award. He was only one of two persons in Australia to be recognised by the Verein Schäferhunde (SV), the breed guardian in Germany. He was awarded the SV Service Award in 1984 and the only one to be presented the SV Significant Achievement Award in 2006 for sustained long service to the breed. Both these awards were given in due recognition of his role in the transformation of the breed in our country and the deep respect and regard he was held in by the SV hierarchy. Juergen s long life commitment to the German Shepherd Dog, our Council and GSDCSA cannot be understated. His sustained and most valued contribution to the success of Council and betterment of the GSD in Australia must be lauded: He was the keystone of an organisation that over a long period of service saw him hold a number of roles as an essential member of its Executive. Juergan was a friend to many in our fraternity; he was generous and did not ask much of anyone, he was a confidant and a true and a sincere man. He was good humoured, positive in outlook and always the gentleman. He will be missed by all of us but not forgotten. Rest in Peace, our dear friend. Thank you Vince Tantaro 30 March 2017

19 CLUB GROUND RULES These rules apply to all handlers and have been formulated for the welfare of you and your dog. Any Club member, or any person guilty of unseemly conduct or acts harmful to the club, may be asked to leave the Club grounds. They may also be dealt with by the Committee of The GSDC of SA Inc. under clause 6, and relative by-laws of the Clubs Constitution. Members shall not treat their dog in a manner that may reflect badly on the Club. The owner and or handler shall be responsible for their dogs while on club grounds and must accept any liability for animals in their care at all times. The handlers of dogs that foul the Club Grounds will be responsible for cleaning up same, with the equipment provided. Any dog that is sick WILL NOT be permitted onto the Club Grounds. Dogs who have suffered a CONTAGIOUS DISEASE WILL NOT be allowed on to the Grounds until 5 weeks after being cleared by a veterinarian (a vets certificate may be required). Puppies should not be brought out onto the Club Grounds under the age of 8 weeks or at least 2 weeks after they have been inoculated for HEPATITIS, DISTEMPER AND PARVOVIRUS (vaccination certificate may be required). The Head Instructor has the authority to permit the use of a muzzle or training devices, as required in special cases. The use of the equipment is to be under supervision, and its use on the Grounds, other than above, is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. The use of switches, spiked collars or whips is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN ON THE CLUB GROUNDS. Dogs are NOT to be taken off lead or left unattended, except on the directives, or under the supervision of a Class Instructor. Bitches in season are not permitted on the grounds unless at a recognised conformation show. Dogs under the age of 12 months ARE NOT permitted to use jump equipment higher than 400 mm, or longer than 800 mm. The handlers of dogs that foul the Club Grounds will be responsible for cleaning up same, with the equipment provided. Pursuant of the Health act "Dogs" ARE NOT permitted inside the Club Rooms. In the interest of safety and health, and in consideration of others, parents are required to supervise the behaviour of their children. The Club Rooms and Toilets MUST NOT be used as playing areas. In the interests of public health the Club Rooms and the veranda area are NON-SMOKING areas. Appropriate foot wear must be worn at ALL times when handling/double handling dogs on the Club Grounds. Bare feet, thongs, slip on shoes, high heels, sandals, crocs and shoes with metal-spiked soles (covered or uncovered) are not suitable foot wear and members wearing any of the above will be asked to leave the Club grounds. Training Extreme Weather Policy Training will be cancelled if the forecast temperature for West Beach is predicted to be 37 degrees or above or an Extreme Storm warning is issued on at 6pm the night before training (Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings).
