Shame the weather has changed so quickly from light to dark and dry to wet and cold. Autumn is officially here! Dog team will be living in waterproofs for the rest of the year. We were all very disappointed to have to cancel Big Walkies back in September but we hope to do it next year. Hopefully in the spring time when the weather is improving. Many of you will know Dominique, one of our long standing receptionists. Sadly after 18 years with us she has had to give up her role. We also said goodbye to Julie V from the small animal team, she had also been with us for several years. Both will be missed, especially around the small animals and Dominique for her love of wildlife. I wish them both the best for the future. I think the kennel rebuild is overdue an update! Behind the scenes work has continued to compile lots of data for the National RSPCA to review. We hope to have the green light on our kennel design later in November. A building company is then all set to start early in the New Year as long as the new bridge is in place first! I look forward to seeing lots of you at the Christmas Fair here at the Shelter on Sunday 26 November please note it is on a Sunday this year! 2

Christmas Fair Items Needed We are looking for a few things for our Christmas Fair at the Shelter on Sunday 26 November. We always need cakes for our refreshments area and to sell on our cake stall if there are any star bakers out there. We also need sweets, bottles of any kind and any unwanted gifts in new condition for our stalls. Please drop anything into the Shelter before the day. Thank you. Friends of Little Valley By Jill Brush, Membership Secretary Hello Friends of Little Valley. Thank you for the wonderful support in the past but there is always a but I am asking you all to dig deep once again for our Christmas Fair on 26th November, one of our two main fundraising days of the year. I know I will not be disappointed. Speaking of disappointment, Summer has been just that. Let's hope we have some crisp autumn and winter days for dog-walking or, indeed, just getting out in the fresh air. Hope to see many of you at the Fair and my sincere thanks for your continued support. You can always contact me on or or phillandjillb@aol.com should you have any questions. 3
4 Roxy Update We told you about Roxy needing an ear operation in our last issue. We managed to raise through an appeal so thank you to everyone who contributed. Roxy has had the operation and is doing really well in her foster home. Great West Run 2017 Paul Madge, a local landscape gardener, has been running for many years. He has taken part in running events to raise money for us before. This year he ran the Great West Run in Exeter for us dressed as superman! There was no photographic evidence, so you ll have to use your imagination, but he managed to raise just over 315 for us using collection buckets as he ran the route. Well done Paul and thank you! Baby Hedgehogs Recently we had some baby hedgehogs brought into us. We had to look after them until they could be moved to the wildlife centre at RSPCA West Hatch, Taunton. Aw! 4

8 Abandoned Kittens On 17 September 5 new born kittens were found in a bin liner inside a cardboard box near to Wonford Hospital, Exeter. There was no sign of Mum but luckily all of the kittens were still alive, despite their desperately vulnerable state. They were absolutely teeming with fleas and very hungry, but after lots of TLC and treatment they are now content here at Little Valley. Staff have been working around the clock to make sure they are fed every couple of hours to ensure their best chance of survival. We put out an appeal in the press for information about who might have abandoned these kittens, and especially about Mum as we were concerned for her well-being. Sadly, no-one has ever come forward. In the spirit of the Great British Bake Off we have named them Flapjack, Tiramisu, Macaroon, Banoffee and Battenburg after all, they are very sweet! The kittens are all feeding very well and starting to become more mobile all eyes and ears are open and their individual personalities are beginning to shine. They are still relying on us for all of their feeds but we have just started the weaning process. They are being slowly exposed to different textures, sounds and smells to help prepare them for adult life. Aren't they the cutest? Keep an eye on our website for when they come up for rehoming. 8
9 Pigs in the Wood Our final two pigs Brian and Trotter went off to their new homes back in August. They had been with us for 2 years! They went to a lovely place called Briery Hill up in Newent, Glos where they will reside in Pig Wood and hang out with the other residents at this magnificent place a few dogs and cats, some chickens, a couple of cows and some fantastic llamas all looked after by Lisa and Steve Fox. Here are some photos of them settling in and the other residents there. We think they ll be as happy as pigs in mud! 47 Mile Exmoor Way Walk Back in May 2017, 3 members of our Dog Team (Fiona, Becki and Jo Mason) as well as our Deputy Manager Rachel completed a 47 mile fundraising walk along the Exmoor Way. They raised a fantastic 2,461 in total towards the Kennel Rebuild Project. This included 52 from a guitar donated to us by Margaret Cresswell-Jones to sell. A fantastic achievement by all involved! Thank you to everyone who sponsored them! 9
