7 RSPCA_Halifax_Editorial_2017_Imposed_Layout 1 20/02/ :52 Page 5 Chairperson s Welcome 2017 Hello everyone, I am so happy to once again have this opportunity to write a note of thanks to all of you who continue to support this branch charity in one or another way; and you may see yourselves in the photographs within this booklet that mark some very special occasions. So grab a cup (or glass) of whatever you fancy and settle back for 20 minutes or so to have a browse through. We had some amazing fund raising events in 2016, all well attended by our supporters, and our K9 Party in the Park last July was one of our best ever. Without the help of our very special friends who volunteer to help either organise or run the events, we really wouldn t see the successes that we do. Our fundraising team has put together a diary of activities and events for this year that I just know you will love watch out for our new function arranged for October: The Monster Ball to be held at the Cedar Court Hotel at Ainley Top, it is going to be great fun so make sure you book your ticket early. Our shops continue to contribute towards the animal care costs but sadly two were badly affected from the floods of Boxing Day Hebden Bridge was far worse than we had feared and it was November 17th before it opened its doors again. But how wonderful to see so many of our regular customers returning along with quite a few new customers I think. Elland is the other shop which suffered because the bridge was closed. We are hopeful that when the bridge fully opens customers will return here too. We are so dependent on your generous donations of clothing, brica-brac, media, furniture, accessories and household to keep our shops stocked, so please do remember us when having a turnout. Of course all the profit raised from these events and our shops goes directly to fund the Animal Centre and branch welfare work and last year it enabled us to accept 846 animals into our care and 743 were found new and loving homes. All of those animals came to us because they had suffered terrible neglect, cruelty or were abandoned or at risk. Many of the dogs are so frightened, having lived their lives in appalling circumstances often in cages and don t know how to live without fear. It takes a lot of tlc, time and positive training through their own personal training plan but the results are nothing short of miraculous. We are extremely proud of our staff and grateful to our volunteers who work so hard to bring about these small miracles. But then I am proud of all our staff and volunteers, no matter which jobs they do, because I know they choose to work for a cause they believe in RSPCA Information Booklet 5

Kind regards Liz Lindsay (Hon Chairperson) If you have thought about becoming a volunteer with our branch, please visit our website and you will find it easy to make an application. We especially would like to hear from anyone wishing to become a Trustee. You will find information on the website on what the role entails. In closing I once more, as always, offer my thanks to our President, Derek Woodfield and Patron, Kate Hardcastle for their continued support. Also I must thank our Trustees for their time and the skills they bring to the Governance of this charity; in particular I commend our Treasurer, Kath Airey, who celebrates 30 years this year of volunteering to this branch. That is an amazing number of hours given to helping animals in need. Well done Kath. Text RSPC 40 1 to to Donate to our Branch Today 7

12 RSPCA_Halifax_Editorial_2017_Imposed_Layout 1 20/02/ :52 Page 10 About Our Branch Welcome to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & District Branch, we are a self-funding branch of the RSPCA responsible for raising money locally to support our animal welfare work. Our main aim is to rehabilitate unwanted, abandoned and abused animals and find them loving, permanent homes. We rely on public donations and the generosity of our local community to keep the doors of our animal centre open. The RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & District Branch is a local charity supporting animal welfare in Calderdale and Kirklees. We support the National RSPCA Inspectorate by housing, rehabilitating and rehoming the local animals in our area that have been subjected to cruelty. Our Animal Centre is professionally managed by people passionate about animals and their welfare. The Centre provides safety for the many animals that are unwanted or cruelly treated. Our main role is as a rehoming centre and we are also a centre of excellence for the rehoming of elderly cats and dogs. All of the animals we accept are abused, ill treated or sick and injured. They come to our centre via our Inspectors, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, ferrets, various wildlife and small livestock. Our vet examines every animal that we accept and our aim is to rehome healthy animals into permanent loving homes. The staff are qualified to NVQ Level 2, National Diploma or RSPCA standard procedures and therefore are not only competent, but also completely dedicated to animal welfare. We assist the Inspectorate with cruelty case animals and nurse many of them back to good health. We provide welfare assistance to those on benefits by providing low cost neutering and micro-chipping. Our professional team is always on hand to offer friendly advice. We also have a commitment to local authorities and offer further education work experience placements to college students We pride ourselves on the level of care that we offer to our dogs. Each dog is walked and trained daily and has the opportunity to take part in agility. All animals are individually assessed so that we can match them to the most suitable homes. The cattery is bright and welcoming and some of the cats even have their own televisions to help keep boredom at bay! We also have public speakers who will attend various functions to help inform people about the work of the branch. All of our centre s activities are funded by local donations, our own fundraising events and our network of charity shops. We also rely on support from our many dedicated volunteers, who help at our Animal Centre, Charity Shops and support our fundraising activities. 10 Text RSPC 40 1 to to Donate to our Branch Today

13 RSPCA_Halifax_Editorial_2017_Imposed_Layout 1 20/02/ :52 Page 11 Adoption Procedures To adopt an animal from our Centre, you need to be over 18 years old. You will be asked to complete an application form. If you live in rented accommodation we will require written permission from the landlord before being able to view any animals. Any animals that are suitable and you are interested in, will be shown to you by a member of staff. If you see an animal that you would like to rehome, we shall place a reserve on it. One of our home visitors will call to see you in your home. All animals have a health check from the vet before they are adopted. Current adoption fees: Dogs from 120, Puppies , Cats from 65, Rabbits 25, Guinea pigs 10, Ferrets 30 and small miscellaneous animals range from 4-5. Every animal will be examined by a vet prior to adoption. At this point we will be advised one of the following: The animal appears healthy and can be adopted. There is or has been a medical condition which does not require further treatment but that potential adopters would need to be made aware of. This would also be declared to the Insurance Company which provides the 4 weeks free insurance as part of the adoption. The animal has a condition which requires further investigation (e.g. blood tests/x-rays) or treatment and therefore is not available for adoption until further notice from the vet. Please note that it is not feasible or cost effective to carry out x-rays or bloods on every animal that on veterinary examination appears healthy just in case there is an underlying or pre-existing condition. Most animals come to the centre with an unknown medical history. However where this information is available it will be provided to potential adopters and the Insurance company. The adoption fee includes the following: Initial vaccinations, flea & worm treatment, micro-chipping, neutering, health check, 4 weeks free insurance (dogs, cats & rabbits), identity disc. We have a brand new website! It has all the information you need about animals for adoption, upcoming events, our charity shops, schemes and useful advice, information and contact numbers. 16 RSPCA_Halifax_Editorial_2017_Imposed_Layout 1 20/02/ :52 Page 14 Home Visits When an animal is reserved at the Animal Centre a Home Visitor will contact the prospective owner within three days of reserving the animal. Arrangements are then made to visit the adopter s home to make sure, both from the animals point of view and for the new owner, that everything is satisfactory. This is an informal visit where we ask that all family members are present. It is an opportunity for us to answer your questions, impart useful information and also to check that you are happy with your choice of animal. We encourage prospective adopters to collect their new pet within 24 hours of the home visit. Lost Animals We do not take in stray dogs, this is the responsibility of the local council. The local council collects lost/stray dogs and takes them to their kennels. If you have lost your dog please phone your local Dog Warden. The Centre now has an online lost and found report and browse facility. If you have lost or found a pet please visit our website and send in a report. You will also be able to browse all the lost and found pets including those at our Centre. Unfortunately your pet may have had an accident. Make enquiries with your local Centre, the vets, and police or sadly in the case of fatal accidents, the cleansing department of your local council. We would encourage owners to report lost/found animals with Pets locate. Micro-Chipping If you have a pet and would like it to be micro chipped please phone to make an appointment. The micro-chip is the size of a grain of rice and is permanent. We do promote this procedure, which is painless. If you are unfortunate and your pet is lost, the dog wardens, vets, RSPCA Inspectors, and ourselves all scan any animal which comes into our possession. If micro chipped, the details of the owner are registered on a computer and your pet can be speedily returned to you. The cost for micro chipping is 10. We can also micro chip for 8 for those on means tested benefits 14 Donate to our Branch via

18 RSPCA_Halifax_Editorial_2017_Imposed_Layout 1 20/02/ :52 Page 16 Donations and Wills The Centre relies on public donations and legacies to continue our vital work of caring for abused and injured animals. We are an independent Branch and do not receive funding from RSPCA headquarters or from the government. We are so grateful for any donations - large or small. They will all help towards the costs of caring for our local animals. To make sure your kind donation goes towards the work we do here in the Calderdale and Kirklees area please make cheques payable to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & District Branch. Cash donations should not be sent by post but can be handed in to the Animal Centre, Wade Street, Halifax. No donation is too small and we appreciate any help you can give us. We are able to claim back tax on your donations, from 1 upwards under the Gift Aid Scheme. This enhances your donations by 25p in the 1. Some people remember the Animal Centre in their Will and if it is your wish for your legacy to benefit the animals in this area the wording in the Will must indicate clearly your wishes, e.g. I wish to bequeath the sum of. To the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & District Branch, registered charity number Volunteering The work we do at our Branch is not possible without a dedicated team of volunteers who help in many different ways. In our animal centre, the volunteers support reception, dog walking, help with cat socialisation and are on hand to help with general tasks around the centre. In our charity shops the volunteers provide a friendly welcome to our customers, help with the sorting and pricing of the many donated goods that we sell and the collecting and delivering of furniture. Our volunteers provide invaluable support at our fundraising events, especially the K9 Party, Horse Show and Big Walkies. The sheer scale of these events means that without our volunteers we would not be able to run them. Fundraising volunteers also help at collections, Open Days, promoting, admin and even organised their own events! If you would like to volunteer in any of the above roles, please get in touch with our Volunteer Co-ordinator Clarewood@rspca-halifaxandhuddersfield.org.uk or call Wanted! Food, Toys and Blankets

22 RSPCA_Halifax_Editorial_2017_Imposed_Layout 1 20/02/ :52 Page 20 Elderly Animal Re-homing Scheme (EARS) It is relatively common for healthy elderly dogs and cats (10 years+) to enter the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield and District Animal Centre, often due to their owner's ill health or death, but few prospective adopters want to take on such an animal, mainly because of the possible financial implications. To alleviate these animal's stress at suddenly becoming homeless and to facilitate rehoming, we have a Scheme to provide support and assistance to members of the public over 18 years of age wishing to home an elderly animal. ADOPTION ON THE EARS SCHEME For a monthly payment of 5.00 per month to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield and District Branch, the adopter qualifies for the following benefits: A Booster vaccination and health check once a year Routine worming tablets and flea treatment Access to our Animal Centre vet during routine clinic times at 5.00 per consultation All current and future medication will be offered at a discounted price Prescription diets will be offered at a discounted price Euthanasia at RSPCA Animal Centre Emergency cover if an owner is hospitalized i.e. temporary 2 week foster care Discount cremation service if required Many local vets are participating in the Scheme and will allow members a discount of up to 20%. This applies only to elective surgery and the emergency treatment of accidents, sudden illness, injury, hospitalization and emergency euthanasia. Should the adopter become unable to look after the animal, we will then arrange for it to be returned to us and to be re-homed again via the Scheme. 20 Wanted! Stock for our Charity Shops

23 RSPCA_Halifax_Editorial_2017_Imposed_Layout 1 20/02/ :52 Page 21 RSPCA Twilight Scheme Can t adopt an elderly animal? Why not pay for their care by joining the RSPCA Twilight Scheme. The Twilight Scheme has been set up to support our Elderly Animal Re-homing Scheme (EARS). The majority of elderly animals require veterinary treatment before rehoming and your monthly donation will help towards the care of our elderly animals. Please call in to our Branch or visit our website for more details. Willing to Care Who is The Scheme for? The Scheme is for any person over the age of eighteen who is concerned about the welfare of their dog or cat after their death and requires the peace of mind that their pet will be rehomed with loving new owners. How does the Scheme Work? You must specify in your Will that you are leaving your pet to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & District Branch under the Willing to Care Scheme. If you are taken into a nursing home or feel unable to look after your pet, you can sign your pet into our care for re homing and he/she will be given priority entrance. On being informed of a member s death, the branch will immediately take special care of your beloved pet. If required we will arrange to collect your pet and bring him or her into our care. Using the answers to your pet s questionnaire (updated annually) we will ensure that there is minimal stress to your pet by following where possible his/her likes/dislikes and routines. If your pet is over 10 years of age, we are especially well equipped to rehome him or her. The branch has an award winning Elderly Animal Re homing Scheme so we will automatically place your pet on this Scheme and look after him or her in a foster home until adoption. We will ensure your pet is adopted as soon as possible in a suitable home for the rest of his/her life. Careful home checks will be carried out to ensure we have the right home for your special pet RSPCA Information Booklet 21
