Chief Executive Report Contents News 2 Welcome to the autumn / winter issue of the Animals in Distress magazine. It has been a fantastic summer and it is our pleasure to bring you the latest news from our rescue centre, including the introduction of the Open Paw programme for the dogs and the newly renovated facilities for the rabbits and guinea pigs. At last we had a proper summer, but the extended period of hot weather did bring with it certain difficulties. Keeping the animals cool was a challenge but the staff and volunteers did all they could with the use of doggy paddling pools, cooling pads, air conditioning for the kittens and numerous fans dotted around the buildings to help keep the animals comfortable. The cattery has had a huge influx of kittens and pregnant mums over the last few months. These have created a lot of work for the staff but there is no feeling quite like a kitten purring when they are stroked or watching them roll around in combat, only to be distracted by their own tails, suddenly going around in circles, tumbling over in blissful clumsiness. In July, we launched the Open Paw programme at the centre and have pledged our commitment to become a University for Dogs. This is an exciting development for the kennels with the focus being on providing enrichment, training and social skills for the dogs through strict daily routines with the aim of having happier, calmer dogs that are easier to rehome. The rabbit and guinea pig building renovation work has been completed. The old dog boarding block has been transformed into a wonderful admissions building for our furry friends. It means that they can be monitored, observed and treated if necessary for a period of time when they first come in before being introduced into the main building. The rehoming building now has pens that are very similar to those in the cattery and this means that we can prevent or control any future disease issues without the potential of all of the animals being affected. It has been a busy summer of events for the Charity. We held the most wonderful Family Fun Day at the rescue centre in June and we attended numerous external events and shows throughout South Devon, including Picnic in the Park, Woofstock and Paignton Regatta. The dog shows have proved to be very popular and we congratulate all of the owners and their dogs that took part. We are now launching The Big Bark Appeal to fund the build of new kennel facilities at the rescue centre. It is our most ambitious project to date but one that with everyone s help, we are determined to achieve. Your kind donations and continued support mean that we can help as many animals as possible and give them the new life that they deserve. Thank you on their behalf. Gareth with Lola: Best Puppy & Reserve Best in Show An event-full summer! We had the most wonderful day at our Family Fun Day in June. Over 500 people and their dogs came to the rescue centre to take part, and the weather was glorious. We would like to thank every single person who came out to support us - we raised almost 3000 and all the money will go to help the animals in our care. We would like to say a massive thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped us on the day and in the run-up to the event, and to everyone who donated delicious home-made cakes. We really appreciate your help and we couldn't have done it without you! It's been very a busy summer which also saw us out and about at many other events, running dog shows and with our stall. We've really enjoyed meeting many of you, and your four-legged friends! Elaine with Oscar & Mooma: Best Rescue & Best in Show 3

Liz donated all the dog-stay fees for two months this year to Animals in Distress, which came to an amazing Earlier in the year two dogs from the rescue centre were invited for afternoon tea at the Manor to sample the exclusive 'A La Bark' menu. Beth and Blix tucked into poached eggs with a dried duckskin soldier, Westcountry sausage and dried sprats with a kefir coulis - and they thoroughly approved! This year Boyce Hatton solicitors chose us as their nominated charity, and set out to raise 1000 to help the animals in our care. The solicitors held dress down days, in-house auctions and a bike-a-thon with a difference where the team cycled along with the Tour de France on a static road bike in their offices in Torquay! Altogether Boyce Hatton raised a grand total of 1,143. Will Writing Week In April during National Pet Month, Boyce Hatton kindly held a Will Writing Week when they gave their time for free to people wanting to make or amend a Will. This was done in return for a donation to Animals in Distress, and thanks to Boyce Hatton's generosity we received over On behalf of all the animals at the rescue centre we'd like to say a massive thank you to Boyce Hatton for their amazing support. 4 Winter dates for your diary We hope to see you again at our wonderful winter events: 2nd Dec: Christmas Sponsored Dog Walk 6th Dec: Christmas Giving Evening 9th Dec: Annual Pet Service 24th Feb: Muddy Mutts 2019 The rescue centre will be open every day over the Christmas holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. 5
Fundraising appeal We need your help to rebuild our kennels Dog (noun.) 1. The best friend you will ever have. A loyal, loving companion that cares for you more than himself. A special creature whose time in your heart will far outnumber its days on earth. Dogs build homes - help us build theirs! Ask anyone who has a dog and they will tell you when you go home, it s the dog who is most pleased to see you. There are many types of love - but a dog's love is special. Dogs make us feel better, they protect us, they know when we are ill, they provide companionship when we feel lonely they are loyal to the end. Dogs are amazing. Every day at Animals in Distress we see the wonderful love that the dogs give to their new families, often despite having had traumatic pasts. We hear many stories of how they have changed, and sometimes even saved, their families' lives. Dogs give the best of themselves, their love, loyalty, unconditional acceptance and affection. In return, we want to thank the dogs in our care and help them to realise their full potential by providing them with the best possible care and facilities until they find their forever home. It is the least they deserve
Please do something remarkable and pledge your support today! There are lots of ways to help us to build a new home for the dogs in our care We need your help Make a donation A donation, no matter how small, will take us one step closer to our goal of new kennels. You can donate by post using the form at the back of this magazine at Buy a Brick For a suggested donation of 100 you can create a legacy for yourself or a loved one. The words you choose will be permanently set in the kennel wall Our existing kennels are old and no longer fit for purpose. They are clean but very difficult and expensive to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We want to give the dogs in our care spacious and comfortable kennels with underfloor heating and an air cooling system. Beautiful kennels, looking out over a garden area, with quiet spaces for the more nervous dogs as well as a training room and a lounge where dogs who have never known life in a home can become accustomed to household noises and experience the love of a sofa. We need to raise over 1million to achieve this and we will not be able to do it without the support of our wonderful friends. Corporate partnerships Become one of our business partners: donate a raffle prize donate goods or services sponsor part of our new kennels fundraise as a team Be a fundraising champion Fundraising can be fun - why not hold your own event or sponsored challenge bike ride marathon dog walk skydive head shave silence cake sale garage sale dog show barn dance quiz night duck race We are here to help you so please contact us to talk about your fundraising ideas and to find out more Call us on or supportus@animalsindistress.uk.com On behalf of the rescue dogs of South Devon, thank you so much for all your support!
In July we launched an exciting new training programme for the dogs in our care, known as Open Paw. The programme is based solely on positive reinforcement and provides enrichment, training and social skills to help dogs in rescue centres find new homes more quickly and to settle successfully into life with their new families. Any time within a kennel environment can be very daunting and stressful for a dog and often leads to unsociable behaviour or withdrawal. We have pledged our commitment to becoming a University for Dogs under Open Paw, which will help to prevent these unwanted behaviours and provide enrichment for the dogs. Some examples of the new daily routine include: When in the kennels, staff and volunteers must throw a kibble treat, provided in jars outside every kennel, to each dog every time they are passing. This encourages dogs to welcome visitors and staff and see their kennel as a positive place to be. Food is provided in Kongs or puzzle bowls so mealtimes are more mentally stimulating. Agility training or play is introduced to every period of exercise outside of the kennel. Open Paw University for Dogs Open Paw has been very successful in other rescue organisations, and we estimate that - as well as having happier, calmer dogs - we will be able to take in and care for 30% more dogs under the scheme. All of this has been made possible thanks to a generous grant from Mars Pedigree Brighter Futures, which will enable us to transform our paddock with new agility equipment and artificial grass, so that we can use it all year round. Open Paw has already exceeded our expectations by making a huge difference to the dogs in our care. The dogs responded quickly to the new training techniques and became noticably quieter, calmer and happier within just a week of the programme starting. On behalf of all the dogs at the rescue centre, we would like to thank Mars Pedigree and also everyone from our wonderful local community who has donated Kongs, puzzle bowls and smart dog toys. We could not have done this without your amazing support. Alice Squirrel "Hello everyone, Sorry I havent been in touch sooner but I've been busy teaching my new husband George Squirrel bad habits. Ummm I mean settling in. When I first arrived, he showed me around the place and told me our family like us to be in by 9pm, and we are not allowed in the allotment. I've told him that when they want us to go in at 9pm, one of us should go in and the other run out again. It's a great game! I explained that I'm a free spirit and I don't want to use a toilet, so now we both poo all over the lawn! It's fine though as they've had to buy this really noisy thing to hoover it all up. The allotment isn't a problem as I've already started nibbling at the corner and will be in there soon, especially with George on lookout. I've also made a hole in the back of the shed, where they keep the small child's toys. George and I had great fun in there the other day with a bucket full of balls. George Squirrel is so strong he likes to pick things up with his teeth, throw them and shout "look Alice, no hands." He loves to throw the watering can around the garden. We are both really happy here. Love to you all, Alice and George Squirrel." Happy Endings Mist "Mist is loving life here in Cookworthy Forest, where we walk every day and she has the garden and paddock to play in and protect. She is welltravelled, Dartmoor and local seaside town Bude are her favourites! She's a loving, gentle girl who is a pleasure to be with and is adding so much to our lives, as we are to hers. We're so glad that we adopted this nervy little merle collie from you - the circle, for all of us, is now complete." - Ronnie and Dawn 10 11
Happy Endings Tia Tia was returned to us when she became very poorly in her new home and since then she has been fostered by Animal Welfare Assisant Liz and supported by the charity. Tia has had life-saving operations to remove her gall bladder, spleen and several lumps. She is now making a wonderful recovery. Bob Tia stays in our rescue centre reception during the day, where she loves meeting new people and makes everyone smile! She has also become an ambassador for the Charity and enjoys going with us to visit schools and to give talks about our work. Tia is extremely happy and is thriving in her foster home with Liz, where she will have a home for the rest of her days. "Bob is a crazy little chap, full of mischief, very loving and follows you everywhere. He pinches slippers, socks and belts and runs through the house dragging them with him, something he s copied from his very best friend Marley the dog! We love him very much and feel so lucky to have been able to adopt him." - Denise Harry & Arnold "Harry Kane and Big Arnold love being outside together, in their big run in the garden. Arnold loves to be cuddled and will purr to his heart's content." 12 - Linda 13
Happy Endings Happy Endings Smokey "Smokey has settled so well. She loves cuddles on the bed and going outside In the garden - when I get home from work she always gives me a kiss and a meow." - Bethany Sadie & Scout Sadie & Scout are a joy to have around, they have made our house a home again. We are privileged to be the ones to give them a fresh start - and as you can see they have certainly made themselves comfortable! - Dean & Rich Toby "Toby was such a shy scared boy when he first came home. It took a long 5 weeks for him and my mini lop female to bond. But they are the best of friends now and always together. They are the cutest couple! Toby is very slowly relaxing more and more each week and now loves cuddles more and more! Toby has put on a lot of weight since being here and his health has improved, I think that is because he has a friend and a loving home now." - Lisa Chloe & Dexter "Thank you for giving me Chloe and Dexter - the most happy, excitable, little munchkins EVER! - Lucy Chops "Chops is such a happy boy - and as you can see, his favourite passtime is still sleeping!" -Jayne Luto 14 "Luto has been with us since December. He has fitted in so well. He s my cheeky chunky monkey Luto Pooto. He s so full of energy from morning until bed time (apart from when he has afternoon cuddles.) He loves 2.30am snuggles when he usually curls up on my pillow after nibbling my scalp. I couldn t be without my handsome mini panther boy." - Tracey Archie "Archie has made himself very at home. He's wonderful. But he is now the boss. We're officially owned by a cat." - Bridget Chewy & Joey "Chewy & Joey have the whole back garden to explore, which they love. They are very protective of each other, and very territorial in the garden - they enjoy chasing away all the cats! - Mitchell 15
A summer of kittens These kittens were orphaned at just a few days old when their mum was killed on the road. They were hand-reared by our cattery team and all have lovely homes now. This summer has been a busy one in the cattery, with a record number of pregnant mums and kittens needing our help. 16 Photos: Paige Platt-Lee Photos: Paige Platt-Lea 17
The big bunny build Leave a living legacy Our rabbit and guinea pig buildings have gone through an amazing transformation this summer. Following a disease outbreak in 2016, we knew we had to do some major works on our existing block to prevent the future spread of airbourne diseases. As well as renovating our big rabbit block, we have converted our old boarding kennels into a new admissions and isolation area. Our rabbits and guinea pigs have now moved into their new, stateof-the-art accommodation, and are much happier, as well as healthier! The new big enclosed pens give their residents more room to run about and play, are easy to clean, and easier to keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter, as well as preventing the transmission of disease. The pens also protect the rabbits from the stress and noise of visitors - they are much calmer and no longer run to hide when we're very busy at the weekends. This allows them to be more easily seen and to find lovely new homes more quickly. One happy bunny - Edwin in his new pen before after We have teamed up with WBW Solicitors in Newton Abbot to offer our supporters a 10% discount on preparing or updating their Wills. Simply call and mention Animals in Distress when making your appointment. 18 If like us you love animals then a gift in your Will for Animals in Distress can help us to find even more forever homes for hundreds of homeless pets every year. Legacies form a vital proportion of the Charity s income. They not only help to cover our day to day costs but have enabled us to realise some of our bigger aspirations such as our new cattery and sensory garden what wonderful gifts they were! If you would like to find out more about leaving a gift in your Will please contact Nicola Moorhouse, Fundraising Manager on Alternatively you can download our guide to leaving a gift in your Will [ uk.com/gifts-in-wills]. What type of gift is best? A residuary gift (the remainder of the estate once other gifts and payments have been made) is popular with many supporters because it takes care of your loved ones first; but some people prefer to leave a fixed sum of money, or an item such as a piece of jewellery or property to their favourite charity. Any gift to Animals in Distress will make a difference to the lives of the animals in our care. Can I leave a gift to be used for a specific area of work or project? If you choose not to limit your gift to a specific area of work it can be incredibly helpful to us we can use your gift wherever the need is greatest. However, if one particular area of our work is very close to your heart, then please contact us on or supportus@animalsindistress.uk.com to discuss your specific gift in more detail. Do I need to draw up a new Will? If you do not wish to alter the contents of your existing Will other than to include a gift to Animals in Distress you can amend your current Will by preparing a document called a codicil. A codicil needs to be signed and witnessed in accordance with the same legal formalities as a Will and we therefore recommend that you consult a solicitor to ensure that the codicil is valid and your wishes will take effect. 19
