1 The Scoop SEPTEMBER 2017 Hours M, Tu, Th, F from 2-6pm Sa 12-4pm Closed Wed & Sunday A publication from the Washburn County Area Humane Society, Inc. Phone: (715) Website: wcahumanesociety@gmail.com Mailing address: PO Box 328, Spooner, WI Temporary Shelter at 930 N. Front St., Spooner, WI Creating a Community Responsible for Animals Since the fire at our shelter in March 2017, many eye-opening lessons have been learned, the most important one being about the kindness, generosity, and concerned interest which has been shown through the wonderful response from the community and from many outside of our community. The downside has been the frustration of the ups and downs of insurance settlement procedures and making a well thought out, time consuming decision based on options of how and where to restructure the animal shelter. Board members have been working on many possible options for this project so a community friendly, animal appropriate and efficient, financially useful shelter could be rebuilt. As of press time, we are nearing a decision and will announce it when it is final. A variety of land options have been looked into, existing buildings to renovate have been considered, and remaining in the same location has been discussed. Building demolition bids have been received; shelter and building designers and a contractor have been contacted. There have been meetings with City of Spooner individuals, attendance at City Council meetings, and meetings with other area animal shelter personnel who have experienced building projects. Financial institutions have been contacted if additional funding is necessary, conducting fundraisers, and attempting to locate and set up the temporary shelter are what the Board members have been doing. Checking into all of the necessary procedures, options, and realities of this rebuilding project has taken time. The days of dog pounds tucked away from the public are in the past. The opportunity is now in the Board's hands to build an effective animal shelter designed for the good care of animals as well as providing a welcoming shelter where the community can enjoy socializing and spending time with those animals waiting for their permanent homes. SHELTER UPDATE Thanks to the loyal and capable shelter employees, a temporary shelter has been set up at 930 N. Front Street in Spooner. After the fire, these dedicated employees cleaned up and were using the outside kennels at the burned building to house strays. They had also been caring for and fostering these incoming animals, at times in their own homes, while attempting to find their owners, maintaining a reliable shelter phone service to the public and, if needed, after all proper procedures had been followed, transporting animals to the Northwoods Humane Society in Hayward. We are so very grateful to Northwoods for caring for our animals and for finding homes for them they are truly a group of kind, dedicated people. 1 We have just recently established specific hours at our temporary shelter. It is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2-6pm, and Saturdays from noon-4pm. It is closed Wednesdays & Sundays. An Open House was held on Monday, September 11, to welcome the public. It certainly was a happy day as two dogs and two cats were adopted and a very thoughtful young lady who had been selling her designer crafts came in with a donation of pet supplies. Thanks to Aylana Luedtke for her generous gifts. Sadie, one of the dogs that was adopted, joyfully went home with one of the donated toys. Our temporary shelter does not have the size capability to handle animal surrenders and only strays are being housed at this time, so please call (continued on Page 6)
2 2017 RAFFLE The Piecemakers Quilt Guild from Hayward donated a beautiful queen size quilt for us to raffle to raise money for our rebuilding fund. Thanks to all of the quilters who worked on this. Raffle tickets are available from board members Vicki Shaffer, Joel Weiner, Connie Salquist, Susie Schmitz, Phyllis Haseleu, Shawn Haseleu, Laura Kalisch, Spooner Market & Grill, or at the shelter during normal business hours. The drawing will be held October 14, 2017 at the Jack O Lantern Fest in Spooner. Tickets will still be available for sale until then $2 each or 3 for $5 and you need not be present to win CHRISTMAS FOR CRITTERS GATHERING There are millions of reasons to adopt a pet. In fact, according to an article in the October, 2017, Martha Stewart Living Magazine, 6.5 million dogs and cats are surrendered to animal shelters each year. Last year, the Washburn County Area Humane Society held a celebration to honor the 10,000 animals that were given the opportunity to go through the door of our animal shelter since it was built and opened in The importance of caring for 10,000 animals at this small rural Midwestern shelter is of significance to that 6.5 million. That is why there will again be a Christmas for Critters Thank You Gathering Celebration. The event was so well received last year that it will be held in similar fashion on Thursday, November 30, from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Spooner Market and Grill in Spooner. Complimentary refreshments and beverages will be served and a cash bar will be available. The quilting group from Thimbles Quilt Shop has again offered their talent by making and donating recipe/potholder mitts to be available for purchase either unfilled or, better yet, filled with really great prizes. Even though the event will remain the same, the reason for fund raising has changed this year. The rebuilding of the WCAHS shelter and the operational costs of the temporary shelter are the objectives for this year's donations. The money from past fundraisers has always been important and well used for the needs of the operation of our local shelter; however, this year's donations will go entirely to the Shelter Fire Fund to ease the debt of rebuilding this much needed and community-approved animal care facility. So, mark your calendars for Thursday, November 30, and make this gathering a social event to enjoy with your two-legged friends for the benefit of your four-legged friends! WHAT S IN THE FUTURE FOR WCAHS? Even though life can be a challenge of changing circumstances, the following are for sure: There will be a rebuilt animal shelter. There will always be a need for a temporary home for animals. There will be a redesigned and better organized and encouraged foster program, volunteer program, and education program. There will be a space available in the shelter welcoming the gathering of youth and adult groups in order to work, play, or spend quiet time with the animals. There will always be kind, thoughtful, generous, helpful people who will give time, love, and money because of these wonderful animal blessings. There will always be kind, thoughtful, generous, helpful and loving people who will share their lives and homes and adopt these lucky pets. Important Dates Oct. 14 Raffle Drawing at Jack O Lantern Fest Nov. 15 Annual Membership Meeting Nov. 30 Tree of Lights/Christmas for Critters Thank You Gathering Celebration WISH LIST Dog & cat treats, kitten chow, moist dog and cat food, cat litter, litter boxes, cleaning products, i.e. Pine Sol, Mr. Clean, Spic N Span, dish detergent, hand soap, toilet paper, flea treatments for dogs and cats, plastic (washable) dog and cat toys, blankets, bleach, envelopes, copy paper, HP63 printer cartridges, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, 39 gallon garbage bags, paper towels, small stainless steel cat dishes with a flat bottom. 3 SUCCESSFUL PINS FOR PETS The 13 th Annual Pins for Pets Bowling Fundraiser was held on Saturday, March 4, at the Northwoods Lanes and Lounge in Spooner and it was a great success. Over $2500 was raised for WCAHS thanks to the caring generosity of all who participated in any way, whether as a bowler, an event volunteer, someone who donated money, donated a prize, bought a raffle ticket, brought in a donation from the shelter s Wish List, or contributed to the snack table. Bowlers of every skill level and age, which ranged from 5 to 75 years old, came in to fill up 3 shifts of bowling at this 9-Pin Tap tournament. Not only did the bowler registration money profit this event but bowlers brought in donation sheet money, bought many raffle tickets, and also donated shelter supplies and gave a few extra dollars to help boost the financial benefits of this fundraiser. From the sight of smiles on faces, sounds of laughter, excited looks on faces during the prize drawings, and the depleted snack/dessert tables, it sure indicated that everyone had a good time, enjoyed good food, and left with a content feeling knowing they had blessed the WCAHS animal shelter with their generosity and involvement in the 2017 Pins for Pets Bowling Fundraiser. The response to this annual fundraiser is never taken for granted and always greatly appreciated. PINS FOR PETS: TAKE 2 We are very pleased to share that Northwoods Lanes & Lounge in Spooner, Wisconsin, hosted a SECOND Pins for Pets event this year (a fundraiser usually held only once a year) with all proceeds benefiting WCAHS to help rebuild our animal shelter! This event was held on May 20 th and raised over $1000 for our Fire Fund. SECOND ANNUAL HAPPY TRAILS FOR HAPPY TAILS Saturday, May 6, was a beautiful day for the second annual trail ride at Dugan Run Horse Trails to benefit the Washburn County Area Humane Society. The number of riders is growing each year as 34 horse and rider combinations took part this year with riders coming from as far away as Hastings, Minnesota, and Green Bay, Wisconsin. Prizes were awarded to Bonnie King from Green Bay for driving the farthest, to Jane Malischke who raised the most donations, and to T. J. Edwards for being the oldest rider. New this year was the cram the crate contest and raffle, which turned out to be a great success. The supplies collected will be used at the temporary shelter presently being operated along with the opportunity to store these supplies for the rebuilt shelter. Trail Ride Cake decorated by Alexia Mead GOOD POURS AT WHISTLE PUNK Each month, The Whistle Punk in Stone Lake has a Good Pours event, collecting donations and tips for a non-profit in the area. In July, they chose WCAHS to be their Good Pours recipient. On July 19 th, some of the board members and staff held a meet and greet evening where they met Whistle Punk patrons and shared information about WCAHS and our rebuilding effort. Thanks to Ian, Ashley, Matt and Linsey for their generosity in helping us and other organizations. Stop in at the Whistle Punk and wet your whistle! 3
4 Helping Paws Club After a presentation about WCAHS to the After School group at Shell Lake School by Connie Salquist, Patty Damon, and Susie Schmitz (along with Rusty and Bubbles), an enthusiastic group of students started the Helping Paws Club in an effort to do what they could to help out our shelter. They collected donations of items from our Wish List, held a lemonade and bake sale at the Shell Lake Color Run, and conducted a rummage sale. We are so grateful to this group of students (and their parents and leaders) who raised over $400 for our Fire Fund. Race4WCAHS Thanks to Trinity Lutheran Church for choosing WCAHS to receive the proceeds of their annual Walk/Run. We would like to thank each person who organized, donated to, or participated in this very well planned event. The weather was perfect, snacks for the 2 and 4-legged runners and walkers were great, and the variety of adults, kids, and animals who came to support the rebuilding of our shelter were truly blessings! This thoughtful fundraising event is a reassurance of so many kind people doing so many kind things. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING Per the bylaws of the Washburn County Area Humane Society, this is the official notice of our annual membership meeting, which is being mailed to all current members. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Spooner Market & Grill in Spooner. There will be two items on the agenda the annual budget will be adopted and Board members will be nominated and elected. This meeting is open to all members whose dues are not delinquent. LOCAL 10-YEAR-OLD COLLECTS DONATIONS Chloe Swonger, now age 10, recently celebrated a birthday, but instead of asking for gifts, the caring a n d g e n e r o u s Chloe asked those who attended her party to bring a d o n a t i o n f o r WCAHS instead of a gift for her!! We want to give a BIG THANK YOU to Miss Chloe and to recognize her for this selfless and wonderful gesture. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHLOE! IN LIEU OF BIRTHDAY GIFTS Thank you to our business members. 5 2017 FOOD & WINE TASTING Thanks to all who came to the 2017 Food and Wine Tasting on April 27 at the Larsen Building in Spooner. There was a great turn out and we appreciate the wonderful support given to us by the Chamber, local merchants, and the public as we continue to work towards rebuilding our shelter! Thimbles Quilt Shop donated a quilt and we gave a ticket to everyone who donated to our fire donation bucket which raised $1460, in addition to the $2500 that the Spooner Chamber of Commerce gave us as one of the beneficiaries of this year s event. The winner of the quilt was Shalla Acker congratulations, Shalla! SENIOR CENTER HOLDS BAKE SALE FOR WCAHS A group of generous bakers from the Spooner Senior Center organized a bake sale at Shopko on August 19th and raised $500 for WCAHS! Thanks to all who donated goodies and who worked at the bake sale. It is truly heartwarming when we get calls from people who take it upon themselves to organize an event for us. Thank you for caring! A HAPPY REUNION One of our volunteers recently stopped by our new temporary shelter. While there she saw a husky that she thought looked familiar. The dog had just been found that day in Shell Lake. She mentioned to a shelter employee that the dog looked very familiar and she would check around to see if she could figure out where she remembered it from. Later that day she looked at the Lost Dogs of Wisconsin Facebook listing from almost a month ago of a dog that was from an entirely different county. This ended up being the SAME dog!!! LUNA was found! She was missing from August 8th until September 2 nd and had traveled through two counties and at least 35 miles! The owners were contacted and they were shocked. They said they had given up after a few weeks and had gotten a cat in the process They wanted to come and get her right away, so at a little after midnight, everyone gathered at the shelter for the reunion. Luna was thin, covered in burrs and her coat was all matted, but otherwise she was fine. She was happy to see her people! REMEMBER TO SAVE YOUR ALUMINUM CANS! DONATION OF EVENT APRONS A dozen adorable aprons were donated by Thimbles Quilt Shop (thanks to Michael Macone of the Potters Shed for permission to use his Shed Fest logo). Look for volunteers with these aprons at future events. Thanks, Thimbles & Deb Wertanen! ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP APPEAL In this newsletter, we are including an envelope for our annual membership appeal. 7 SHED FEST 2017 Shed Fest 2017 proved to be a success regardless of the rain and shine weather on Sunday, June 25, at Shell Lake's Potter's Shed. The many musical groups who donated their talent for the benefit of Washburn County Area Humane Society played on and the 200 plus fund raising supporters weathered the ups and downs of the day and evening to generously help add over $5,000 to the WCAHS Fire Fund. Judy and Jack White inspired and coordinated this idea with Michael and Rebecca Macone, so Shed Fest 2017 was created. The team of WCAHS board members, employees, and volunteers served food and beverages, gathered the donated prizes from so many generous individuals, and sold an incredible number of raffle tickets. All involved in the 2017 Shed Fest unanimously agreed this event would become an annual fundraiser. If you have the opportunity, we encourage you to get out and see the musicians who helped make our event a success: Mickey and the Monsters, Bare Bones, Olive Sings, Chris Ritchie, John Lehman and Friends, Bear Lake, Toast, Jeff Wiesner, and Rebecca Macone and Friends. If you haven t been to Music at the Shed during the summer months, you re missing out on a fantastic venue. Check them out at thepottersshed.com COUNTY FAIR Thanks to all who visited our table at the Washburn County Fair this year and to all the volunteers, bakers, and donors who helped out during the Fair. Shown are Connor and Matty Dorn. RECYCLE OPPORTUNITY WCAHS is accepting the following items for recycling: inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges (Brother, Canon, Dell, LEX and HP), cell phones, smartphones or iphones, digital cameras and camcorders, GPS units and graphing calculators. Items can be dropped off at the shelter during business hours. SPAY/NEUTER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The Washburn County Area Humane Society has a "SNAP" program, available to those who need assistance with the cost of spaying or neutering their pet. We are currently able to offer a $50 discount towards each surgery to those who qualify, while our funds last. We will be using our Thomas Fund, established by one of our members in memory of her beloved cat, Thomas, plus money that donors have designated for our SNAP fund. We are excited about offering an affordable program and hope this will help reduce the number of unwanted kittens and puppies that are born and ultimately come to our shelter each year. For more information or to request an application, please call the shelter at
