Cats at War When people went to war, cats went too. Its a little known fact that cats and even kittens accompanied men and women into the fields of battle, both at sea and on land. "War cats" had two important roles: official mascot for the regiment, squadron or ship; and rat catcher, a less glamorous, though no less essential duty. But whether photographed as a mascot, working cat or adoptee - for often, in the field of battle, cats and kittens were adopted by troops - cats have performed another essential role: raising morale. With their amusing and affectionate behaviour, they helped remind men and women far from Australia of "normal" life, and the comforts of home. The British experience was very similar. As one of the curators of the Imperial War Museum recently said: It was probably something to do with holding on to a bit of normality... offering a bit of innocence in contrast to the horror around them. Because the one thing they couldn t blame for everything bad that was happening around them was an animal. (Paul Cornish, IWM Image : The ship's cat off duty, aboard armed merchant ship HMAS Kanimbla, circa 1941 AWM ) In common with our sailors, soldiers, nurses and airmen, many a cute kitty has had its portrait taken. Enjoy this selection of photographs from the Memorial s collection, showing cats at war. Its thought that the tradition of cats aboard ship arose as far back as ancient Egyptian times, when early mariners saw the usefulness of having a rat and mouse catcher aboard to protect their on board food stores. By the time of the First World War, cats, in common with other animals, were often mascots of not only ships but infantry regiments and Air Force squadrons. Incidentally, British Admiralty records apparently show significant expenditure for the annual maintenance of cats aboard ship to keep rat numbers down. The practice of providing cat sized hammocks probably originated with the British navy. Cats have a natural tendency to attach themselves to a place, space or territory and were therefore better suited to ship board life, or as a mascot to an air force base, than to an army regiment likely to be on the move. Even so, many of the Memorial's photographs of cats were taken with infantry and other land based units. 3

Cats at War (Cont) A naval cat would typically begin as the pet or mascot of one area of a ship, such as the engine room, before finally becoming the official mascot of the whole ship. Some ships, as the Memorial's collection shows, had more than one cat, and sometimes the ship s cat had kittens at sea. It was thought to be bad luck for the ship s cat to leave the ship, and indeed there is an Australian story of a straying cat whose ship went down. This is the story of Red Lead (left), the black kitten mascot of HMAS Perth. In January 1942, HMAS Perth, with a crew of over 600 men, was tasked with preventing the Japanese advance across south-east Asia. En route they stopped at Fremantle, where, it is thought, little Red Lead joined the ship. His favourite spot was curled up in the cabin of Hec Waller, the ship s captain. On 27 February, HMAS Perth joined a fleet of British, Dutch and American ships to stop a Japanese naval convoy from landing on the island of Java. The allied fleet was outnumbered; its ships were picked off by Japanese planes and the heat of battle sent Red Lead to hide in his favorite place till Perth withdrew, and returned to safe harbour. It is reported that while at harbour, Red Lead tried to leave the ship, no less than three times. But in each instance he was spotted deserting, was intercepted, and returned to his post. The ship s log for the day read : "Red Lead, ship's kitten, endeavoured to desert, but was brought back on board, despite vigorous protests." Several of Perth s crew observed this and were dismayed, seeing Red Lead s escape attempts as a bad omen for their future. Very sadly, Red Lead s instinct was proven. The next day, HMAS Perth and USS Houston sailed for the south coast of Java and met a large fleet of Japanese ships. After a desperate battle, the Perth was sunk. Over 350 men, including Captain Waller, and one little black kitten, were lost. The Australian War Memorial s sculpture gardens contain Animals in War, a memorial dedicated to service of those who had no choice. The sculpture memorial was a joint project between the Australian War Memorial and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). In 2014 the Memorial held a special service to commemorate Australia s service animals. AWM Flickr set "Cats of War" : -warmemorial/sets/

Breed Feature Burmese by Sue Thomas A little brown female cat, named Wong Mau (left) was the beginning of the very popular Burmese breed of cat. She was taken back to America from Burma, where she was mated to a Siamese, because there was no other cat like her, and the Siamese was the closest in type to her. From those early beginnings, the breed was further developed over many years, both in the USA and later in the UK. The first Burmese in Australia came from the UK in 1957, when a syndicate of four Australians, including Mr Geof Allen of the Amerst Prefix, imported Tomahawk and then Calypso Pallas Athene (right) into NSW. The Burmese Cat Society was formed in the 60s and the first specialist show was held in Left - Red Right - Lilac Today, the popular Burmese is bred in the coat colours of brown (the original), blue, chocolate, lilac, then later along came the reds, creams (called the O gene) and the tortoiseshells brown tortie, (brown, red & cream) blue tortie (blue & cream) chocolate tortie (chocolate, red & cream) and lilac tortie (lilac and cream). If a red or cream cat is mated with a solid brown, blue, lilac or chocolate, there will be usually some tortoiseshell kittens. Mostly these are female, but occasionally there is produced a male tortoiseshell. It has been a breed partner of the Chinchilla, to produce the Burmilla breed, the British shorthair to produce the Mandalay, and, when crossed with a Siamese, a Tonkinese is produced. Burmese are very playful, intelligent and affectionate. They usually bestow their loving nature on all family members. They love nothing more than being with their human family. Burmese are not as vocal as a Siamese, but will engage in a chat with you. They love to follow you around and be part of the action. Burmese enjoy snuggling up in bed with you on a cold winter s night if allowed. Burmese are excellent with children, and often become the dress up cat for a child, and have been found wearing doll s clothes, and taken for a ride in a stroller etc. 6

Breed Feature Burmese (Cont) Left - Blie Right - Cream It is not necessary for them to go outside, as they are very happy finding warm or sunny spots around the house to have a nap. Burmese have no road sense, and sadly, can often be stolen, or be bitten by a snake if they are located near the bush, be poisoned by ticks in their own back yard or chased by dogs if they are outside. They are medium in size, approximately 2.8 kg 3.25 kg for a female, and a little heavier for the males. They mostly love being cuddled, or sitting atop your shoulder, and love to sleep with their owners if allowed. Burmese have a soft close lying glossy coat which is likened to the touch of silk, and with their heavier than they look weight, they have been called bricks wrapped in silk. Their coats need very little grooming, just a little comb or brushing weekly will clear out any dead hairs. Golden yellow to amber eyes, large and lustrous, seem to mesmerise you. The ears are set well apart on their heads. The cat is a medium sized foreign type cat, being not too slender (like the Siamese) nor too thickset (like the British shorthair). It is a graceful elegant cat, with slender legs, and is extremely well muscled. Most breeders sell their kittens at weeks of age, after the kitten has been desexed. 7

Advertising in Catching Up Advertising All commercial and member advertising enquiries should be directed to: Joanne Greentree - jaygee.jo@gmail.com Full Page - $150 Half Page - $100 Quarter Page - $ 65 Cattery Cards - $ 60 per year Notice to Advertisers The Trade Practices Act 1974 came into force on October 1st It is the advertiser s responsibility to ensure advertisements submitted for publication comply with the Act and that the provisions of the Act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are asked to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material. The Editorial Committee reserves the right to withhold publication of any material whatsoever. Views and opinions expressed in this journal are those of the correspondents and contributors concerned and are not necessarily those of the Editorial Committee, printers or publishers. Names and addresses of correspondents may be withdrawn from publication on request but must be supplied to the Editor. Disputes From time to time, members refer matters to the NSW Cat Fanciers Association Inc (NSW CFA) when it is not appropriate. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of cats are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual arrangements between members. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts, not by NSWCFA. Members are requested to refrain from referring matters to NSW CFA which are a private or domestic matter or which should be properly resolved by the Courts. Members should be aware that the Consumer Claims Tribunal is available to resolve many disputes in the relation to the supply of goods to a consumer and NSWCFA recommends that matters that fall within the jurisdiction of that Tribunal and which cannot be resolved personally should be referred to that Tribunal.
