5 Vale Cheryl Steffe by Wendy Hamilton I first met Cheryl on a personal level when asked to become involved in organising the first CFA run Sydney Royal many years ago. First impression was of a woman of great ability but at the same time, perhaps a little intimidating. Well I discovered that façade was simply her way of covering up an extremely warm, generous and in fact, soft woman. Cheryl had been a member of NSWCFA for 20 years and was well known as the Office Administrator for much of that time. Her competence in the role was famous country wide as the registrars from other Associations would often phone her for assistance. Her fast turnaround of registrations and enquiries was appreciated by all and for me, her quick uptake of the database running the CFA was a credit to her intelligence. While working in this role she also took on the extra task of helping the President at that time, Denis Turner, co-ordinate and process Sydney Royal in her spare time. Once the CFA Show program came on board this would entail huge after hours ti e spe t i putti g data, pro essi g the judge s slips a d orderi g the catalogues from the official printers. Then of course days spent at the showground from dawn to dusk making sure all the paperwork was perfect and ever thi g read for the e t da. I sure su ar is issi g a fa ets. As well as the Royal she then stepped in to also help do the same for the Fundraiser show. Volunteering the many hours to help process and co-ordinate. This was her donation to the Association and was so often overlooked. Of ourse I a t e tio Cher l Steffe s a e ithout also e tio i g ussia Blues! This as Cher l s passio a d her Si lu prefi e a e s o ous ith ussia s of the highest ualit. I fa t, o re alli g her achievements in the show ring I became a little awestruck at the level of her success. When a single female Russian (Siblu Silver Jasminka) can win 20 Best in Show awards in one year and accumulate 80 CCCA awards we all take notice. For me, her Sergei (Siblu Sergei Diaghilev) would become my benchmark for the breed as a judge a d is the poster o for Si lu. Ho a reeders a e redited ith i i g Male Cat of the Year, Female Cat of the Year, Neuter Cat of the Year and Male Kitten of the Year all in the same year! 7 consecutive years of Male Kitten of the Year! Not only a master breeder but an extremely caring and ethical breeder as well, which cemented my respect for Cheryl and our friendship. Those fortunate to have known Cheryl on a personal level will remember the many unexpected gifts she would surprise you with. Or perhaps the care in looking after your girl who was due and not able to attend, or checking your home while away. So many thoughtful gestures. She followed this same path at her new community and was evident by her many visitors when times became tough. She made an impression wherever she went. Rest In peace Cheryl. 7 From Illawarra Pedigree Cat Fancy Inc SHORT NOTE FROM THE SHOW S MANAGER Welcome to our 52 nd All Breeds Championship and Companion Annual Cat Show where we have each come together today to show & promote our wonderful felines. Today is tinged with a little sadness as our club has come to the realisation and decision that this is to be our very last show. Our team at I.P.C.F. has become too few, too aged and too time poor to effectively provide the quality of event that over the very many years it has become renowned. We hope that many of you exhibiting with us today can recall the events that have kept our attendances high and our fun level at the highest. Events such as Lucky 8 (now in its 18 th year), Pet Rescue (7 th year), Catathalon in 2000 celebrating the Sydney Olympics, Celebrity Judges, Best Dressed Exhibitor and the legendary White Elephant Stall (cat blankets and bric-a-brac) all brought that little bit of fun, interest and excitement to our Annual Cat Show. And who can forget the wonderful Shellharbour Scouts who for 18 years have given their courteous and workmanlike support to this event, setting up, pulling down, transporting our gear as well as feeding our engine room and all those who attended. We know that our show was enjoyed because you all just kept coming back again and again and again J I.P.C.F. sincerely THANKS YOU ALL. We hope to bring you today an event that rewards you with a pleasurable experience and your feline with some lovely prizes. To assist us in this mission we must again thank our Major sponsors OZ-PET, IVORY COAT & DOGTAINE S supported other spo sors Che i al Esse tials F, Sho E You Lo e'e, Ori et, Delete and Kalinya Siamese. A special welcome to IVORY COAT COMPANION GOODS for their maiden sponsorship of our show. We ere also pleased to o ti ue this ear ei g a le to offer the Illa arra Sports Stadiu as this ear s venue. With show entry numbers decreasing across cat show World, it is always a financial risk securing such a venue. The I.P.C.F. sincerely thanks todays exhibitors for supporting our event & minimising this risk. As our Pet Rescue event continues to find Homes for Life for kittens and cats, we thank Oz-Pet for continuing its tremendous support of this event. Providing exhibits this year is the R.S.P.C.A., All Companion Animal Rescue, Coast and Country Pet Rescue, Best Friend Fur Ever Rescue and Pound Cat Adoptions. Hopefully todays exhibition and subsequent judging by NSW CFA judge Marg Sim, will strengthen the opportunity of finding them a "life" home. Let us all hope that we can find a suitable owner for each of them!!!! I must also thank each and every person who assisted with show setup yesterday & who are at today's show. The Shellharbour Scouts have now been assisting us with set up, pull down & feeding us all for around 18 years. As we find ourselves with dwindling & ageing members, the assistance of Shellharbour Scout Group is very much appreciated. Please give them your thanks when greeted by them today. Another vote of thanks is given to our volunteer workers today. There is no show without you & we at I.P.C.F. appreciate your time, effort & expense in working with us. Well Done judges, show co-ordinator, show secretary, floor stewards, recorders, trophy teams, runners, door security, stall holders, and benching slip secretary. Enjoy your day. Promote your Cattery. Promote your wonderful kittens & cats. Have a Safe journey home & we hope to see you at another Cat Show in the future, it just will no longer be at I.P.C.F. s Anne McNaughton Club President & Show Manager 5

8 Artificial Insemination - Part 2 Artificial Insemination For vaginal and especially for transcervical intrauterine artificial insemination, a thorough knowledge of the genital anatomy of the female cat is necessary. The distance between the vulva and the cervix is between 45 and 60 mm. The cranial vagina is narrow. The fornix is located ventrolateral to the external cervical opening. The cervical canal is oriented obliquely between the uterine body and the vagina. Vaginal smear from a female cat not in estrus Vaginal smear from a female cat in estrus Vaginal cytology can be used to confirm estrus. A small cotton swab (i.e., a urethral swab for men) is moistened with saline, inserted well into the vagina and rolled against the mucosa to obtain epithelial cells from the vaginal wall. The cotton tip is rolled onto a slide and the slide is stained with, for instance, Giemsa stain. When the queen is in estrus more than 80% of the vaginal cells are cornified and the background is clear. It is important to remember that this procedure may induce ovulation. Cat spermatozoa have a fertile life that is at least as long as the time between induction of ovulation and ovulation (26 to 29 hours) since ovulation is induced by mating and pregnancy can result after a single mating [1]. Pregnancy can result after mating or AI for up to 49 hours after the induction of the ovulation. The cervix is only open for passage of contrast medium during a certain period during estrus. In most queens the cervix is patent during mid- and late estrus, with some individual variation. The time when the cervix is patent usually coincides with the time when the vaginal smear is cornified. Therefore, AI should be performed during mid- or late estrus and within 49 hours after the induction of ovulation. The vaginal smear should have a typical estrus appearance. It is probably beneficial if a vaginal insemination is repeated on two occasions, either on two consecutive days or with the second insemination two days after the first. This will increase the likelihood that the cervix is open on at least one occasion. The cat is an induced ovulator. When performing AI in the queen there is no mating stimuli to induce the ovulation and, therefore, ovulation has to be induced artificially. A dose of 100 IU hcg is usually effective to induce ovulation when given on the third day of estrus. Administration of hcg on day 1 or 2 of estrus is less effective. Ovulation usually takes place within 26 to 29 hours after treatment. Ovulation can also be induced by administering 25 mg GnRH, or by mechanical stimulation of the vagina with a cotton swab. Artificial insemination can be performed by depositing the semen in the vagina or in the uterus. Higher pregnancy rates are obtained both in the dog and cat when semen is deposited in the uterus compared to with vaginal semen deposition, and fewer spermatozoa are needed. Intrauterine semen deposition can be accomplished either by transcervical catheterisation or by surgery. Surgical AI is not allowed in all countries. A transcervical catheter for use in the cat has been developed. It consists of an outer catheter that is introduced into the ventral fornix and an inner catheter that is directed dorsally into the cervical canal. An outer catheter with a maximal diameter of 2.7 mm has been reported to fit the vaginal lumen of most females. Zambelli et al., [4], however, found that a thinner catheter was required in some queens and used a 1 mm diameter catheter that 6

9 Artificial Insemination (Cont) was inserted through the cervix with the help of rectal palpation. The method of transcervical catheterisation probably needs to be further developed before it can be used routinely in clinical practice. If the semen is going to be deposited in the vagina, efforts should be made to place the AI catheter as close to the cervix as possible. A 3.5 mm French tomcat catheter is narrow enough to pass through the anterior vagina and reach the cervical os. Chatdarong et al., [5] found that placing the sedated queen in dorsal recumbency with the hind quarters elevated at 30º angle facilitated infusion of vaginally deposited contrast medium through the cervix into the uterus during estrus. The outer vaginal catheter (a) fits into the ventral vaginal fornix (f) and aligns the transcervical catheter (b) with the cervical canal (g), permitting the intrauterine deposition of semen, via the inner catheter (c), into the uterus (h). Dorsal median postcervical fold (d), vagina (e) Sedation is not always needed for vaginal insemination but facilitates manipulation of the catheter to an appropriate position. Insertion of a catheter through the anterior vagina usually induces the post-coital reaction in an unsedated queen. It is recommended that when anesthesia is required for AI the insemination should be performed after ovulation has taken place. Number of Spermatozoa per AI - Sojka et al., [6] reported that at least 5-50 x 106 spermatozoa were required for consistent pregnancy results of between 40 and 67%, after vaginal insemination of fresh cat semen. When queens were inseminated twice on two consecutive days with 5 x 106 spermatozoa the conception rate was 75% (6/8 queens). Tanaka et al., [7] showed that 80 x 106 spermatozoa were required to obtain a pregnancy result of 77.8% (7/9 queens) with vaginal deposition of fresh semen. With surgical intrauterine insemination only 8 x 106 spermatozoa were required to obtain a pregnancy result of 80% (8/10 queens). P regnancy results after insemination of frozen cat semen have been considerably lower than those reported using fresh semen. Platz et al., [8] reported a pregnancy rate of 10.7% (6/56 queens) when using x 106 frozenthawed spermatozoa for vaginal insemination in gonadotrophin-induced estrous queens. Tsutsui et al., [8] froze spermatozoa in an egg yolk Tris-fructose citric acid extender or in an egg yolk sodium citrate solution and reported a pregnancy rate of 57.1% (8/14) when using 50 x 106 frozen-thawed spermatozoa for intrauterine insemination in queens in natural estrus. From: vetbook.org Did you know that a physicist once made his cat the co-author of his paper because he'd accidentally written "we" instead of "I" throughout his work and couldn't be bothered to change it? Also, believe it or not, the British Government has a position called "Chief Mouser To The Cabinet Office" that can only be assigned to a cat. And although this may not surprise you, a study once proved that cats are more than capable of recognizing their owner's voices, but simply choose to ignore it. 10 Breed Feature - Norwegian Forest Cats History The Norwegian Forest Cat is an ancient breed which originated in Norway over 500 years ago. Some believe the breed is 1,000 to 2,000 years old. Known as the Wegie, Norskogkatt, Skogkatt or Norskskaukatt, these cats are a direct descendant of the fairy-cats mentioned in Norse Mythology. In the myth, The Death of Balder, Freya - the goddess of love and fertility - drove a carriage pulled by skaukatts (literally meaning forest cats and originally used in a derogatory way) to Balder's funeral. In Thor's Journey to Utgard,Thor fails to lift Jormungand - disguised as a Skaukatt - completely off the floor, and thus is defeated in a contest of strength. It is entirely possible that the ancestors of the Skogkatt are Turkish longhairs, since several Byzantine emperors had Scandinavian guards - the Vaeringer. Cats have been farm animals ever since, usually living outdoors with shelter wherever they could find it. Possibly the Skogkatt evolved here since it is very well adapted to such a life. There is speculation that the Maine Coon, the Siberian, the Turkish longhairs and the Skogkatt are related, having a common ancestral base somewhere, but this is still just speculation. It may equally likely be a case of parallel evolution under similar living conditions. The Cat Fancy in Norway got started as late as 1934, and Pans Truls not until 1938 did anyone think of the Skogkatt as a special breed. Then, with the advent of World War II, all pedigree cat activities came to a temporary halt. The Skogkatt was almost forgotten until the beginning of the seventies, when a group of fanciers started breeding programs in earnest. In December 1975, Norwegian cat breeders started Norsk Skogkattring - The Norwegian Forest Cat Club - to attempt to preserve the breed. By 1976, the breed was officially recognised by FIFe. The example of the breed was Pans Truls. There was now a great deal of work ahead, finding appropriate breeding stock, ensuring that the gene pool became large enough to ensure against the risks involved with inbreeding. This work went on in Scandinavia until 1990 when it was decided to stop recognition of new animals from the countryside, the so-called novices. All Skogkatts can be traced back to novices from the original program. The first two cats exported were sold to Sweden, and the United Stated received their first pair in November Although there have been Skogkatts brought into Australia previously, the first registered cats arrived in December 1998 in Western Australia with others in Queensland and subsequent imports into Western Australia and New South Wales in Description The Skogkatt is a relatively large, double coated cat that can come in any colour or pattern except Himalayan pattern and lilac or chocolate colours. Their head is a triangular shape with a straight profile, large tufted ears, and almond shape eyes. A medium length and squarish body with legs and tail as long as the body - a male Skogkatt can grow up to 10kgs. Their distinctive double coat has a coarse, glossy overcoat covering a thick woolly undercoat, which surprisingly does not knot. When mature, a profuse ruff develops around the neck and down the chest to form a 'shirt front'. The tail is long and bushy. The most common pattern in Skogkatts are tabby patterns, although spotted, patched, bi-colours and solids are also commonly occuring. 8

11 Breed Feature - Norwegian Forest Cats The tabby pattern occurs in classic, mackeral and spotted. The colours include brown, tortie, red, blue, white, black, silver, smoke, blue-cream and cream. Tabby or tabby and white are the most popular patterns/colours although the solid black is quite stunning. Their eyes can be any colour - yellow, green or blue - and are not coat colour related.the semilong fur sometimes needs brushing and even combing, but mostly the cat can handle its fur on its own. It may need help in removing twigs and other debris though. The common wire brushes should be used when the cat is sheding, to help prevent furballs, otherwise brushing once or twice a week with a bristle brush is usually sufficient. Characteristics When we talk temperament, the Skogkatt does not quite resemble other breeds. A feral cat must be intelligent and inventive if it is to survive. In bad times when food is short or the weather is bad, only the intelligent individuals who are able to use unorthodox methods to get food and shelter will survive.the Skogkatt is courageous and fearless. For generations it has learnt that the best kind of defense is an attack. This gives it a very strong will and robust nerves. Skogkatts do not become nervous or restless. They accept every change with surprising equanimity and easily adjust to new situtations. At the same time, the Skogkatt is playful, lively, affectionate and alert cat. They have a loving and gentle disposition. There is no reason a Skogkatt cannot live inside permanently, but it will be necessary to provide good facilities for climbing and/or scratching. A tall scratching post and a shelf high up will provide for the cat's need for exercise. It is of course also possible for the cats to go outside. You will find the Skogcatt appreciates climbing trees, usually the tallest ones, and you may see that they almost run down and not rarely head first. Skogkatts are amazing hunters. They are curious as well as fearless and must be shown what is acceptable prey. They can easily catch a bird in flight. If they are kept indoors, their favourite prey will be flies and the like. The Skogkatt agrees well with other breeds of cat, dogs and with children. Usually attaching themselves to one particular person, Skogkatt will stay with that person through thick and thin. It is not unfriendly or uninterested in the rest of the family, as long as it can be with its favourite member in quiet moments, in times of stress and during illness. The intelligence of the Skogkatt and its energetic and lively behaviour naturally makes certain demands on its owner, if the cat is to thrive physically and mentally. The Skogkatt loves to learn through play. It quickly learns to walk on a leash, to fetch a 'prey' or to jump on command - just to mention a few things. Turning knobs and flipping latches are also popular. If you make sure that the Skogkatt has something to play with, and that it gets to use its' muscles, your reward will be a happy, beautiful and interesting friend for both children and adults. 23 Advertising in Catching Up Advertising All commercial and member advertising enquiries should be directed to: Joanne Greentree - jaygee.jo@gmail.com Full Page - $150 Half Page - $100 Quarter Page - $ 65 Cattery Cards - $ 60 per year Notice to Advertisers The Trade Practices Act 1974 came into force on October 1st It is the advertiser s responsibility to ensure advertisements submitted for publication comply with the Act and that the provisions of the Act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are asked to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material. The Editorial Committee reserves the right to withhold publication of any material whatsoever. Views and opinions expressed in this journal are those of the correspondents and contributors concerned and are not necessarily those of the Editorial Committee, printers or publishers. Names and addresses of correspondents may be withdrawn from publication on request but must be supplied to the Editor. Disputes From time to time, members refer matters to the NSW Cat Fanciers Association Inc (NSW CFA) when it is not appropriate. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of cats are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual arrangements between members. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts, not by NSWCFA. Members are requested to refrain from referring matters to NSW CFA which are a private or domestic matter or which should be properly resolved by the Courts. Members should be aware that the Consumer Claims Tribunal is available to resolve many disputes in the relation to the supply of goods to a consumer and NSWCFA recommends that matters that fall within the jurisdiction of that Tribunal and which cannot be resolved personally should be referred to that Tribunal.
