2 On 20 August, 2012 the RSPCA and thousands of budding Cupcake Cooks will celebrate Cupcake Day, the biggest bake-off in the Southern Hemisphere! This simple concept has struck a chord with thousands of Victorians and budding bakers across Australia, presenting a fantastic opportunity to take part in a fun and low-cost event that raises funds needed to give the animals in our care a second chance. Cupcake Day relies upon generous and fun-loving participants to hold a cupcake event and donate the proceeds to the RSPCA. The event presents the perfect opportunity for a fun group activity that contributes to a worthwhile charitable cause; and in 2011 many of our participants did just that with 60% of Cupcake Day events taking part in the workplace and 16% taking part in schools. This year we hope that organisations across Victoria will get involved in Cupcake Day - It s such an easy way to support the RSPCA. This is an activity where your business has a chance to get employees interacting with one another and their community! It is also a chance for your staff to support the 35, 000 animals that will need care from the RSPCA this year. Your participation in Cupcake Day will mean that the RSPCA is able to give thousands of animals a second chance. Since Cupcake Day was launched in 2008, we have experienced amazing growth in the event s size and fundraising capacity. After achieving an income of $16,500 in 2008, the event has gone on to achieve remarkable growth with an income of $204,055 in a 1037% growth in four years! This year we are raising the bar even higher, with an income target of $250,000 we are hoping that your school will jump on board and help us bake our way to that target.

4 The RSPCA is a non-government, community based charity that cares for stray, injured and mistreated animals. RSPCA Victoria operates ten shelters as well as Inspectorate services across the state. With only 4% government funding, and yearly operational costs of $26 million, RSPCA Victoria relies heavily on the dedication of volunteers and upon community support including donations and participation in events such as Cupcake Day! That all creatures, great and small, are: Free from hunger and thirst Free from discomfort Free from pain, injury and disease Free to express normal behaviour Free from fear and distress The primary objectives of RSPCA Victoria are the prevention of cruelty to animals and animal rehabilitation by: Educating the Victorian community regarding the humane treatment and management of animals, and increasing public awareness of and support for animal welfare Enforcing the existing laws to prevent cruelty to animals Accountability: Preparedness to be held accountable for plans, actions and outcomes Professionalism: Behaviour and standards that set the benchmark for other organisations Integrity: Soundness of judgment and honesty in everything we do Openness: Transparency in our actions, decisions and results to all stakeholders Creativity: Willingness to review current operations and implement new and innovative approaches that assist in achieving our overall objectives. Influencing the amendment or development of legislation and standards considered necessary for the protection and welfare of animals Encouraging and providing a sustainable, needs-based network of animal welfare services across the state, for the care, shelter, treatment, rehabilitation, and protection of animals within the capacity and strategic directions of the organisation Providing relief programs to assist people within the community who are experiencing adverse circumstances, to enable them to care for or manage their animals.

5 Hi, my name is Skittles. I was rescued by RSPCA Inspectors after a member of the public found me suffering from terrible injuries caused by animal cruelty. I spent the next three months receiving intensive veterinary care and rehabilitation at RSPCA Burwood East and living with a foster carer. In the meantime, the Inspectorate continued with its investigation, determined to bring those responsible for this crime to justice. In August 2011 my previous owner was convicted of animal cruelty, fined and banned from owning an animal for 10 years. Although I lost my hearing and one of my eyes as a result of the cruelty, I am now loving life with my new owners. The dedication of RSPCA staff and volunteers and generous contributions from the community, including taking part in events such as Cupcake Day, has meant that I have received a second chance in life.

7 Ingredients 450gm (grams) self-raising flour, sifted 170gm caster sugar 170ml milk 110gm butter, melted, cooled 2 x large cage free* eggs, beaten 1 teaspoon natural vanilla essence Sprinkles and lollies, to decorate Icing 340gm pure icing sugar Pink food colouring, optional 30ml tablespoon water Method 1. Preheat oven to 200 C. Grease a 12 x 1/3-cup capacity muffin pan. Alternatively, line holes with paper cases. Combine flour and caster sugar in a bowl. Make a well in the centre. 2. Add milk, butter, eggs and vanilla to flour mixture. Using a large metal spoon, stir gently to combine. 3. Spoon mixture into prepared muffin pan. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Stand in pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool. 4. Make icing: Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Add food colouring and water. Stir until smooth and well combined. Spoon icing over cupcakes. Decorate with sprinkles and lollies. *Choose Wisely - remember to choose your eggs wisely when baking. Use certified barn-laid, free range, organic or RSPCA approved eggs. 8 Here s some sweet treats for your pups. Remember to serve up these doggy cupcakes in moderation, we don t want your poodle addicted to strudel! Metric 1 cup (250ml) 3/4 cup (185ml) 2/3 cup (170ml) 1/2 cup (125ml) 1/3 cup (80ml) 1/4 cup (60ml) 2 tablespoon 1 tablespoon (20ml) Ingredients 2x cups water ¼ cup unsweetened apple sauce ¼ teaspoon vanilla 4 cups wholemeal flour 1 cup dried apple pieces - you can also use fresh fruit 1 tablespoon baking powder 2x cage-free eggs, beaten slightly 4 tablespoons honey Method 1. Preheat oven to c. Grease a 12 x cup capacity muffin tin. 2. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly. Combine dry ingredients in separate bowl. 3. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients slowly, scraping well to make sure no dry mixture is left. 4. Pour into muffin tin. 5. Bake for 1¼ hours. Insert a toothpick into the centre of a pupcake and if it comes out dry, they are ready to come out of the oven. 6. Wait until cooled to serve. 7. Store in a sealed container.

9 Start with freshly baked and iced cupcake. You may want to add some food colouring to the icing to get the right colours for fins, feathers, fur or fangs! Food colouring: Can be used to change the colour of icing and coconut great for making realistic grass! Tubes of icing for drawing on cakes: Can be found in the cake decorating section of your supermarket. Desiccated coconut: Can be used for grass or fur and you can change its colour using food colourings. Lollies: Everything from smarties to snakes to marshmallows to liquorice can be used for ears, tails, facial features and scales. Hundreds and Thousands: These can be used for anything from butterfly wings to beetle droppings! Edible glitter: You can get this at cake decorating stores. Turns a cupcake into a disco ball! Marzipan: Great for molding animals.
