1 Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue Advocating humane and healthy practices for animals in the Jaltemba area by promoting health, education, sterilization, adoptions, foster care and positive relationships with animals and their owners. December 2006 to February 2011: During this time, there were 9 clinics and more than 1,816 animals spayed or neutered in the Jaltemba Bay Area! UPDATE: Our next clinics will take place in Lo de Marcos from March 30th to April 2nd and in the Jaltemba Bay area from April 6th to 9th inclusively. 2 We have a tiny animal shelter located in La Colonia, just north of La Penita. It is at the home of Celia who really is an animal angel. She helps heal sick animals, works with us to adopt out animals and speaks with people to help them understand the need to care for animals. Dan Cormier visited JBAR s animal shelter and writes: I recently made a visit to JBAR's domestic animal shelter in La Colonia. It was an eye opening experience and it inspired me to learn more about the plight of neglected animals in our area. That lead me to the work of Lin Chimes and the many volunteers that make up JBAR (Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue). I did a little write-up of my visit and included information on how people reading this can help our local animal friends. Check it out here... Celia receives no money for all her work year round. If you visit her, take a bag of dog food or offer her a donation. JBAR supplies all the food for the street animals under her care along with medical treatment. If there are enough funds, we want to begin to offer her a small weekly amount of $500 pesos (about $45.00) as she lives on a shoestring and barely gets by each month. JBAR would be lost without her. If you wish to be part of Celia s on-going fund, please let me know. As a Visiting Tourist, How Can You Help the Street Animals? For those of you who visit our area and see a hurt animal, one starving or needing care, it can seem overwhelming. The tendency is to walk away. Actually, there are four important things you can to do to help! Here is the list

3 1. Purchase some dog food and feed the animal while you are here (available in most food stores). People food also works. Most street dogs are use to eat only tortillas so may not be used to more nutritious food! There is some controversy over this as it may make the animal dependent. However, if I was starving and someone gave me food, even for a few days, I think that is a good thing. When life is on the line, deal with one day at a time!

4 2. If an animal is hurt, call our local vet at Dr. Eladio only speaks Spanish so you may need someone to help you translate. Call a taxi at and take the animal to Dr. Eladio in La Peñita Esteban B. Calderon No. 3 which the 2 nd parallel street to the main street of La Peñita on the south side, ½ block from the highway. He also gives vaccinations. If a dog has mange, he can administer Ivermectina to help the skin condition. 3. Carry some Frontline or Advantage (either purchased in your home country or from Dr. Eladio for approximately 100 pesos) and administer it to the street dogs. This will help keep fleas, parasites and especially ticks which cause Erlichia in check. Just add the drops to their skin after parting the hair just below the neck (so the animals cannot lick it). Very easy to do and will keep the dog safe for up to 3 months. Please note: not safe for cats! 4. Carry some fresh water and a plastic container. Many of these animals cannot find fresh drinking water. For many of these animals, we just try to buy time time to get them healthy, time to recuperate, or time to find a home, which all comes back to one day at a time. If each of you did a little it would go a long way to add one more day of life to some of these animals. Even though you are here for a short time, you can take action and feel great about contributing in a meaningful way while still enjoying your vacation. 6 Breakfast Brunch at Tiffany s Cafe: A Sumptuous Experience!!! Breakfast Brunch at Tiffany's Cafe: Tom and Paul are offering Sunday Brunch at their El Panorama B&B Villa every Sunday, and donating 10% of the proceeds to the Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue (JBAR). Brunch is served at 10 a.m. on the back terrace and includes homemade quiche, bacon, toasted bagels, fresh fruit, granola, yogurt, glass of cranberry juice, and a cup of coffee. YUMMY!! 7 Our goal for the spring of 2011 is to reach $5,000 worth of donations in order to offer clinics in the Jaltemba Bay Area and also Lo de Marcos in April. So far this year, we have received $3, and only have $1, yet to go! Thanks again to all those who have donated in any way: money, donations, and time! 14 For Adoption in Lo de Marcos: Rambo is a 1 1/2 year old male fixed shepherd mix who was abandoned when his family moved away. He's med/large size and gentle.

15 Palomo is a friendly, med. sized, fixed 1 year old male. Good with children and animals. The owners acquired new puppies and do not want him.
