Chamberlain (Ashburton) lochanvar@scorch.co.nz Island Secretary - Mrs N. G. Brown (Ashburton) jnbrown@farmside.co.nz Southern : Chairman - E. D. King (Gore) ejking@woosh.co.nz Secretary - Ms T. Powley (Kuriwao) tpowley@ruralinzone.net Inspections See Regulation 4 o Head BREED DESCRIPTION The head should be of medium length, hornless. Not fully covered in wool but a small tuft of white wool on the forehead is preferred. The preferred colour of the feet and ears should be dark brown. The eyes should be bright and expressive. The teeth and jaw setting must be correct. Ears should be thick and alert. o Forequarter The neck should not be too short and the shoulder blades should not be too prominent. The size and shape of the chest should be in keeping with the modern concept of meatiness: not too wide and rounded and the brisket should not be prominent nor should the heart girth be full. o Ribs Should be well-sprung and devoid of excess fat. o Back and Loin The spinal structure should be sound. The back and loin should be wide and rounded and there should be indications of a well-developed 'eye' of the chop. The hindquarter should be wide and deep. o Legs and Feet The fore and hind legs should be set well apart and the joints should be free from defects. The feet must be even in size and correctly shaped. The animal must be able to walk freely and the legs should be of a similar colour to the head and free of fleece wool below the hock. 356
3 o Fleece and Skin The fleece will be a down type, short to medium in staple length, dense and of a micron count. The fleece should not contain any black fibres. The fleece should not extend beyond the topknot or below the knees and hocks. The belly should be covered in wool. The skin should be pink in colour and pliable. o Carriage The animal should move boldly and be active, and its head should be held above the line of its back. The animal should be alert. The ram should show distinct evidence of its masculinity, and the ewe should show femininity. APPENDIX RULE All Suffolk, Southdown and South Suffolk sheep must come from registered and Brucella Ovis free flocks. All Suffolk sheep used must have been DNA tested free for Spider Syndrome. Breeders are urged to only use sheep of top quality to ensure the betterment of the breed. Breeders may cross Suffolk, Southdown, or South Suffolk sheep in any way they choose within the Appendix Flock. To be considered for full registration, a sheep must have 75% registered South Suffolk bloodlines. The intent of this proposal, rather than 3 generation line breeding is to create a completely new strain, try and maintain a constant colour and type to ensure South Suffolks maintain their 'identity' in the market place. Eligible for Full Registration - The 3/4 bred progeny become eligible for full registration subject to inspection of both the sheep and the records. It should be realised that the bred-up sheep only affect the breeder's own flock. Should they wish to sell any ewes or stud rams, then the market will decide whether their crossing has been successful or not. Inspection - To use 2 inspectors from the Breed Committee or their nominees for the re-entry of sheep to purebred status. Minimum age for Inspection - sheep must be at least 5 months old. 357
