4 WHITE SUFFOLK STUD HISTORY The Bundara Downs White Suffolk stud was founded in 1993 with the purchase of elite genetics from highly successful studs within Australia. From this solid foundation, we are producing high quality soundly structured rams that are making a positive impact on the prime lamb industry. To do this we evaluate our stock utilising visual assessments as well as Lambplan, weighing of lambs at birth, weaning weights, measuring muscle and fat depth at 9 months. The Lambplan data is compared across studs within Australia to give us a comparison of our performance, not just within our stud. Acquisition of leading sires has enhanced our excellent muscling and growth without restricting our genetic pool, allowing us to produce rams with varied traits to suit different production systems of our clients. In 2011 Bundara Downs joined the Super Whites group, to further increase genetic gain within the stud through access of high performing sires. 4

The figures shown are estimated breeding values (EBV's) for growth, fat depth and eye muscle depth at post weaning (9 months). They are compared with all White Suffolk sheep in the LAMBPLAN data base. The index value shown - Carcass Plus - is a combination of the above EBV's describing the value of each ram a breeding programme. 5

6 Hypotrichosis Use Bundara Downs White Suffolk genetics with confidence Bundara Downs takes its responsibilities as a producer of seedstock genetics for the prime lamb industry seriously. Not only do we need to provide the industry with genetics that improve profit driving traits such as growth, efficiency, yield, muscling and fertility, we have a responsibility to ensure genetic conditions that could have a negative effect on productivity are identified, managed and eliminated. When Hypotrichosis was identified as an issue in the terminal breeds, Bundara Downs took the bold, (and expensive) step of DNA testing all of our White Suffolk stud sheep resulting in a DNA tested Hypotrichosis free flock. Because Hypotrichosis is recognised as a simple autosomal recessive trait, meaning that both parents must carry the gene for it to be expressed in the progeny, using DNA tested free Bundara Downs rams or ewes means the problem will not appear in their progeny in your flock. By the end of 2012, over 2000 Bundara Downs sheep will have been DNA sampled and tested, by far the largest and most comprehensive Hypotrichosis testing program in the breed. As a result Bundara Downs large input of DNA data into the Sheep Genetics Australia database, a GeneProb analysis is available for the Lambplan membership. This generates a carrier probability percentage for each individual animal. 6

10 Mating details of all Ewes All ewes from 2012, 2013, 2014, were mated on December 5th through AI, except for some ewes backed up as detailed below. These ewes scanned in lamb on the 5th & 18th February by Livescan - Nick Lawrence ph: The ewes are due to lamb late April / early May. Back up ram put in December 19th. The 2015 ewe lambs were mated on January 8th through AI - back up ram put in on These ewe lambs were scanned in lamb 18th February by Livescan - Nick Lawrence ph The ewe lambs are due to lamb late May / early June. There were 7 ewes that did not take to the AI and are scanned in lamb to back up rams. These were scanned in lamb on February 18th by Livescan - Nick Lawrence ph All back up rams removed March 3rd.
