1 THE ODSOC NEWSLETTER, FOR MEMBERS, AUTUMN 2012 This newsletter provides details of future events and activity. We hope it is useful and whets the appetite for publication of the Autumn edition of our Journal in October. Yours sincerely, John Champion Chairman Odiham Heritage Days, the weekend 7 th & 8 th September in the Cross Barn (1030am to 4.15pm) Please drop in to the Cross Barn to see what is going on, to talk to other people who love living in Odiham and North Warnborough, and to meet visitors to the Parish. Details are attached. OdSoc Winter Programme of Events for 2012 Please join us in the Cross Barn for an interesting set of evening talks and events (with a glass of wine) that will occur on the 2 nd Friday evening of each month, beginning 14 September. The programme is attached. Membership renewals REMINDER (please act now) Membership is due renewal on 1 November 2012, unless you already have standing order in place, so please renew by post using the attached membership and standing order form. We believe your subscription will continue to provide outstanding value with 2 editions of our Journal delivered each year, an exciting programme of events to attend and many projects on the go. Please submit the gift aid form if you have not already done so and you are UK taxpayer. Projects underway A list of key projects we have in hand is attached. Additional helpers are sorely needed and will be most welcome. Planning An excellent sub-committee reviews all planning applications for the Parish and briefs your Executive Committee for direction, and then makes appropriate comments and representation to Hart District Council where warranted. Copies of longer submissions are published on our website. 1
2 Members may be aware that sites are required for 180 new homes to be built in Odiham Parish during the coming 16 years; meeting this goal this will require extension of the settlement boundaries. A robust plan for the Parish is essential to avoid continual pressure from developers and ensure optimum location, density and design of these new houses. Hart District Council has compiled a list of available sites so that those which are unsuitable can be dismissed and an appropriate number of houses may be allocated to those which are decided to be most suitable. Odiham Parish Council (OPC) is committed to consult with the public and create a plan of the best way forward before the end of 2012, and the Odiham Society Planning Sub-committee and Executive Committee will liaise with and assist OPC as this progresses. Blue Plaques New plaques now grace Monks Cottage and the George. Hampshire County Council through Councillor Glen has kindly provided funding for two plaques for the homes in Odiham and North Warnborough of Manley James and Rev William Addison, who were both awarded the Victoria Cross during the First World War, and we hope to have these VC plaques in place before Remembrance Sunday this year. Plaques for the Cross Barn, Stoney Alley, Terrys Alley and Odiham Cemetery are next in our sights. New Publications The Society is pleased to have recently published a new booklet, by local historian Mary Bennett, on the Non-conformist and their Chapels in Odiham and North Warnborough. Mary will be signing copies at the Odiham Fete and the Cross Barn this weekend Artists wanted We need talented artists to sketch and paint Parish features and illustrate new publications, continuing the excellent tradition set previously by Ray Millard, Peter Adams and others. New Members We welcome new members. Please recruit neighbours and friends to make the Society stronger. Membership forms can be printed from our website and pdf version is also attached to this . Volunteers Your Committee needs more members and helpers if it is to do all the things that the Society would like to do for Odiham and North Warnborough. Please contact us if you can assist or know someone who would like to end
