Read more about these great Holsteins in the ads & stories beginning on page 35. From the Editor Once again we are proud to showcase New York Holsteins in the April issue of the News, be it to our regular readership, our growing online readership, or to those at New York s Spring Dairy Carousel. There are a lot of great breeder ads in this issue, highlighting what they have to offer in the sale ring as well as what s exciting back on the farm. Innumerable opportunities will be auctioned off in the several weeks great sales offering the best in Holstein genetics. There has never been a better time in the history of the Holstein breed to trade up and incorporate a great young cow, potential MICHAEL McCAFFREY show winner, or high genomic individual into a breeding program! I had a terrific day visiting herds in Chenango County and I want to thank those who hosted me and my guide for the day, Brian Sheridan. I always go into a barn wondering what I will see and what is different or unique about a particular dairy operation. Every farm I visited in Chenango County has unique aspects to it, be it a managerial aspect, a breeding philosophy, or how the owners plan to remain viable in the future. I hope you enjoy the section as much as I enjoyed putting it together and getting to know the people behind the farm names. We are always looking ahead in the News and in the May issue, we ll feature the breeders of Northern New York, along with highlighting Red & White Holsteins. This growing component of the Holstein breed continues to get better and better type wise, production wise, and index wise. Weave in the polled gene and it s that much more exciting. Genex will co-sponsor our June issue and is offering great incentives for those who promote their Genex-sired cattle. I hope you will take advantage of their promotion - details can be found on page 53. Through the years, Genex has helped many breeders build high-producing, functional, profitable herds and their sires today are among the most exciting in the world. The June issue will also include complete Carousel show & sale coverage, as well as be distributed at the National Convention. Carousel is a great place to see the most elite cattle from across the United States and Canada. I hope it is part of your plans for April Carousel is also a terrific opportunity to renew friendships and make new acquaintances. I ll see you there! 4 - NYN April 2013

10 Executive Manager s Report PATSY GIFFORD We live in New York. Why should it surprise us when the weather is unpredictable? All I know is that this winter has been a long, gray one and spring will be not just welcome, but thrilling. Let s hope the cold days are behind us as we head for Carousel. As I say every year, Carousel is a great place to reconnect with cow people from all over the country. Entries in all shows look great and it will be the fun kick off for the 2013 show season. If you re exhibiting, here are a few reminders. No papers pending. If you don t have your registration paper in hand as you read this, please get it. There is no cut off transfer date at Carousel for juniors. For all exhibitors, a signed transfer works for change of ownership. To receive junior recognition, all juniors must show their own animal. Exceptions must be approved prior to the show and must be an extreme circumstance. Lease animals are allowed, but a lease form must be on file with Carousel staff. This can be a national breed association, 4-H, or New York Holstein form. Make sure your health charts are with your cattle and you have the required metal or fair tag identification. All sale cattle are eligible to be shown in their respective shows and can be entered immediately after the sale at the $35 fee. This applies only to Holsteins and Red and Whites. All colored sale cattle are pre-entered. Starting off the weekend with junior activities is a great way to get Carousel going. Any junior, member or not, is invited to participate in the judging contest, showmanship, Saturday night s junior Olympics, and pizza party. Bring a friend. I hope all junior exhibitors will participate in showmanship. We keep the classes reasonably small, keep things moving and it s very good practice for kids and animals in the Coliseum. Ridgedale is once again awarding a beautiful hand-made show box to the Master Showman and, this year, our New York Red and White breeders are giving a $50 cash award to the highest placing Red and White Association member in each showmanship class. You do not have to show a red and white calf, just be a current member. We will have a PDCA judging conference this year along with the junior judging contest. All are welcome in the PDCA conference for a $20 fee. Junior entry fee is $1. There will also be discussion time for the PDCA participants. I encourage all juniors to participate in the judging contest. With the high caliber of cattle that come to Carousel, we offer classes of all breeds that put that true type in your mind. The official judge will place and give reasons on each class right after you turn in your cards while the class is fresh in your mind. We ll have results as soon as possible after the contest, so you ll know how you did. For little guys who are interested, but might not want to really compete, we plan to have a member of the Junior Executive Committee on hand to offer help, explanation, and encouragement to make it a fun learning experience. We don t have a reasons portion of the contest, but reason and phrase practicing on the way home can again give you a head start for the year. We welcome entrants from anywhere. If you re planning to travel in for judging, I hope you can stay for some or all of the shows and sales. Affordable hotels are close by with special Carousel rates. Friday and Saturday s sales offer great selections. I can put you in touch with the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Milking Shorthorn reps for information on their sales. Our Holstein sale on Saturday offers special choices from all areas of breeding philosophies. Beautiful show prospects, cutting edge genomics, deep, respected cow families, red, and polled animals will all sell - calves, heifers, bred heifers and young cows. There s nothing new or glamorous about our NYHA state sales. Year after year we have offered cattle that represent the skill of our New York breeders and many have gone on to write success stories for their new owners. The profit from our NYHA sales is an important line in our yearly budget and enables us to continue the junior and senior activities that we offer. The ongoing support consignors and buyers have for each other and NYHA have made exciting, successful sales. Solid, honest sales that continue to serve our membership year after year are our goal. Thanks for that ongoing support. If you need a catalog or representation at the sale, please just give me or any of the sales staff a call. I met with Curries just a week ago and you ll want to make plans to be in Tully on July 20. The herd looks fabulous, the farm immaculate, Dinosaur Barbecue food will be out of this world, and they are planning a top-shelf sale with about half from their herd and the balance consignments. It will be a great day of Holstein fraternity and opportunity. Please contact them or me if you are interested in participating in the sale. It looks like we ll be heading for Lancaster, PA with farm and other stops along the way for our fall bus trip. Once again, you can be sure that Ed & Barb Tyler will put together a trip that s interesting, economical, and fun. Details will be available as we have them. As I say every year, we couldn t host Carousel without the financial sponsor support we receive from class sponsors to the platinum level. We give them all the onsite recognition possible and send thank you notes, but a word of thanks from you at the local level is a great help to show them how much they are appreciated. Thanks. Carousel - great cows of all colors and people from far and wide who appreciate them. I hope you can join us. See you in Syracuse. Take care and keep in touch NYN April 2013

12 Happy April Everyone! I would like to take a moment to point out s o m e t h i n g you may have noticed in the Chelsea Jones March issue and that is that Dairy Dilemmas are back in the Junior Corner. Each month, there will be a set of questions that are submitted by our Dairy Jeopardy Chair, Stephanie Bishop, and our Dairy Bowl Chair, Justine Bishop, who come up with the questions for next year s competition. These questions are meant to help you by giving you new topics to think about as well as refresh your brain with dairy knowledge. It will also give you an idea for the types of questions that you will be asked in future competitions. In March, the Junior Executive Committee met for our reorganizational meeting and we are all very excited for the year to come! As we come into April, the New York snow will be melting and spring will soon be upon us. With this idea of spring in mind, it is finally time for the 2013 New York Spring Dairy Carousel which is going to be held April in Syracuse, New York! This means it is finally time to get out those whites that have been in storage and to shine those show halters for the show ring. Along with the show, remember we will have junior activities as well as the judging competition. Even if you have never tried your hand at judging, I encourage you to give it a try as it is a lot of fun! It is important to remember that with shows come the idea of ethics and how we treat our animals and other people is very important. Remember, people can walk through the barn and see you working with your animals and as the concern of animal welfare is continuously growing, it is important that all of us are prime examples of quality animal care. I know sometimes our cows step on our toes or they try to get away from us to get to the closest food source, but it is important to handle the situation calmly and not get too mad at them. This concept is important to remember for shows throughout the year as well as talking to people about our animals and what we are doing as an industry. Take the time to talk to people as they walk by and answer their questions if they have any and use this opportunity to share your Holstein story. The Spring Dairy Carousel is the kick off to the 2013 show year and is a great time to reconnect with friends and to be proud of the work we have been doing this winter to get our animals ready. I look forward to see many of you at the Spring Dairy Carousel and at shows and events throughout the year. Good luck and have fun! Delaware County Junior News By Stephanie Bishop It s been a while since Convention but another large event is coming up and I m sure we are all so excited for it. Carousel! Before I get to that though I would like to address the Convention. Delaware County was highly successful in Batavia, with the senior Dairy Bowl team placing second and the junior teams also doing well. Although we placed second we plan to represent New York State at the National Convention this summer and we are very excited as well as nervous. Justine Bishop, not only captain of the senior team with Matthew Gray, Melissa Bishop, and myself, also placed first in Dairy Jeopardy. I would like to commend Matthew on the wonderful contest, it was a lot of fun, and also, my thanks go to Wyoming County for hosting the Convention. I had a lovely time and I m sure I m not the only one. It s only March but Justine and I are already busy working on the Jeopardy and Dairy Bowl contests. Carousel is less than a month away and things are starting to get busy. It also seems that spring is in the air, or at least I hope it is, so have fun and try not to get sick. I ll see you in Syracuse! O-H-M Junior News By Cody Sears The view from my front yard shows that the pesky groundhog in Dairy Dilemmas Juniors: 1. When was the milk bottle invented? 2. 13 Pennsylvania was wrong and spring was definitely not just around the corner. The plowing and rock picking may have to be put on hold for a while longer, but it gives us more time to get ready for the upcoming shows. The Spring Dairy Carousel is always a highlight for juniors after the long winter. Watch next month s News for O-H-M results. The Junior Executive Committee met in March at the Radisson in Utica to start planning this year s events. I m very excited about what we have planned and hope that you will mark your calendars to attend the summer picnic at Currie s. It s sure to be a great time. I m told that calf raffle tickets will be available soon. Don t forget to get yours and start selling to everyone you know. Shannon Sears has a challenge that she will be presenting to all juniors next month regarding this sale. On a local note, congratulations goes out to O-H-M junior Laura Littrell who placed second in the junior division at our regional 4-H dairy quiz bowl competition held in Fonda. Great job Laura! Chautauqua Jr. News By Clark Wiltsie Sixteen Chautauqua County Junior Holstein members attended the State Junior Convention in Batavia. We did not place in any of the competitions, but next year! Thank you to Katelyn Miller for the awesome folding display. Her theme was in the spot light. We made new friends and grew closer to the old. We brought home photos from a photo booth to prove it. We participated in all the festivities jump house, water slides, and popcorn & movies. Congratulations to Katrina Nickerson on being in the top seven at the NYS Dairy Princess Pageant. 15 Connie s North Country Chatter By Connie Gerow Hey look it s a robin! April Fools! By the time you read this column, we are hoping to see more than just robins. At this writing, neighbors have seen a few cardinals; the wild turkeys are scratching the old corn fields and the usual aroma that comes as skunks wake and find their way to food. Surely, all significant signs that spring will soon be here. Another very unique sign of spring and one that brings back a flood of happy memories is having the opportunity to visit a maple syrup operation. One fond memory was having sugar on snow at my late Uncle Ken and Aunt Bernice Dumont s farm in Brainardville, NY. Did you know that if you eat a dill pickle, this enabled you to eat more sugar on snow? As in the past, area farmers relied upon the extra income that came from creating this sweet confection. Allan and Mary Friend of Burke, New York aka Circle-F Farm in the registered Holsteins industry, carry on the tradition of Friend s Maple Products. One can only imagine the long days and nights that occur during this very short and grueling season. Depending upon the weather (warm days and cool nights), maple trees are tapped in late February. Over the years, newer technology has given away to replace the sap bucket and daily collection process. The Friends put in about 3,000 taps and rely upon plastic tubing lines and pumps to bring the sap to their new sugar house. One might say their new sugar house is User Friendly. Allan states that it takes between gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. In addition to the syrup, Mary Friend can be found in her kitchen churning out maple cream, maple candies and array of other maple desserts. Two weekends in March, the Friends host an open house, complete with horse-drawn sleigh rides. And, this is all done between taking care of their fine herd of registered Holsteins. So, hats of to Allan and Mary Friend and thank you for carrying on your family tradition. Congratulations are extended to the Meier family who live across the Salmon River from our farm. Daniel and Rachel Meier welcomed their little lady - Helen Johanna into this world on February 7th, There is not a doubt in my mind that little Helen will receive all the love and much more from her family and nearby grandparents, Daniel and Helene Meier, of HappyDanny Holsteins & Dan s Dairy. Congratulations to Jeff Dana and Blue-Top Farm (Dale and Grenda Chapin) for breeding the Reserve All-American Spring Calf Beaver Top Destry Tally-ET owned by the late Lauryn Dana from North Lawrence. Tally was 2nd Spring Heifer Calf at the International Holstein Show and 3rd at New York State Fair. Short of not missing somebody, I would need another page to report on the area s recent classification. Although, there are not any secrets, the North Country has a bounty of Holstein breeders with Excellent cows. I trust that you will learn more about many of the results in the May edition of the New York Holstein News. Until then - as the Basketball season winds down the show season begins! Here s to a great year. Best Wishes to all who are headed to the 2013 New York Spring Dairy Carousel. Asia Of The Month... The Other Goldwyn Roedale A Gold Cindy-ET (VG-87, VG-MS) x , x , x , (Inc.) Now, it is apparent that potential customers of my breeding genetics open the News first and look for my ad, as many times I have had phone calls about the ad before I have even seen it! 38 Out and About in Chenango County I met my guide and traveling companion for the day, Brian Sheridan, at his FSA office in Norwich, and we embarked on our day filled with great people and great cattle throughout this scenic region of New York State. Evans Holsteins Scott & Shelly Evans were ready for us and I was eager to see their wellknown herd. The entire Evans family enjoys the show ring and it is there that one often sees Amanda, Jacob, Alex, and Jenea Evans working alongside their parents. This is a great, uniform herd of cows and offers something for everyone - deep cow families, outstanding type, and an array of high genomic individuals as well. The 70-cow herd is housed in tie stalls and pastured extensively during the summer months. With a BAA of around and a lactation average 24, , the herd is impressive by all accounts. Those who follow the show ring will quickly notice Androscoggin Laramee Maddy (VG-88, 2y), a long, tall Laramee daughter that was purchased with Darryl Fiorina through the New York Spring Sale in 2011 and now completes seven generations of VG or EX. Maddy, due again in June to Atwood for the 2013 shows, was the winning junior 2-year-old at the CNY Holstein Show in 2012 and stood fifth at the New York State Fair. She has a June 12 Gold Chip daughter. Another great addition to the herd came through the Morrisville Autumn Review Sale in 2009 Ms Rollnview Jsper Elise- ET (VG-89), a Jasper daughter from six generations of Excellents in the 38 - NYN April 2013 SHELLY & SCOTT EVANS Evans Holsteins Elegance family. Elise was flushed very successfully to Goldwyn and has a December 12 daughter that looks very promising. One other standout that was purchased at Don & Joanne Hosking s dispersal last October is Hosking Braxton Fire, the winning winter calf at last year s Delaware County Show & Fair. Fire hails from the Tri-Day Ashlyn- ET (2E-96 GMD-DOM) cow family and is a massive, deep-ribbed individual that will likely see a halter again in Son Alex s show favorite from 2012, Wil-Wen-Brook Wbr Shanigan, the Honorable Mention Junior All-New York Spring Calf, is growing very well for her young owner and will be out again this year also. There are some exciting genomics individuals in the Evans herd as well, and one that has helped gain them fame in that market is Evans-H S Miracle Print-ET, a Super daughter now owned by Elite Dairy Genomics LLC. With a GTPI of +2344, Miracle is from the Print family and sold for an impressive $95,000 in the International Intrigue Sale. Up and coming offspring in this family are sired by McCutchen, Observer, Uno, and Shamrock. As is the case with any registered Holstein herd, certain bulls clicked at Evans Holsteins, and Storm, Advent, Talent, Durham, and Outside are sires stacked in many of the pedigrees. There are many exciting young cows in the herd today, and a VG Atwood daughter, Evans-H Atwood Princess (VG-85, 2y ) is one of the most best. A beautifullybalanced young cow with a fancy udder, she has a Ladd-P daughter and is currently bred to Windbrook. Her dam bears mentioning, Evans-H LJP Pickles (VG-87), sired by a homebred Linjet son from a VG-87 Charles who left a good number of strong, good-uddered daughters in the herd. Pickles also has a September Superlarge calf that Scott really likes. Scott and Shelly are now milking three Absolute-Red daughters that they are very pleased with and there are also a good number of fine young cows sired by Destry, Alexander, and Piccolo. Good management, attention to detail, a love of great cattle, and a hardworking family are all key components of Evans Holsteins success and make it a must-see herd when in the Norwich area. Hillbrook Farm Close to Guilford, David Randall is pursuing his dream. At the age of 21, David is milking his own impressive herd on his grandfather s farm, and is obviously enjoying what he is doing. He and Erin Moseley care for the 50- cow herd in a recently-renovated tie-stall barn that is bright, airy, and geared to cow comfort. As we visited on the barn floor and David pointed out some of his favorites, his proud grandfather, Dave Randall, beamed with pride, so pleased to see cows in his barn once again. David is the first to give credit and thanks to those who have helped him along the way, including his family and Holstein breeders who have made cows available to him. He credits Mary Klecha Conroe, Randy Taylor, the Wolfe family, Gerry & Greg Law, the Kelsey family, and Paul Larkin for selling him sound, good-pedigreed cows to build upon. And build upon them he is! The Hillbrook herd has many tall, framey, good-legged cows with outstanding udders the kind of cows that will last and be profitable for many years. David has also stepped out a bit to the sale ring to obtain a few very special individuals. Pineland Dundee Terrify- ET is one I have long remembered since she sold as a bred heifer in the 2009 Morrisville Autumn Review Sale. Backed by one of the greatest maternal lines in the Holstein breed, DAVID RANDALL, ERIN MOSELEY, & BRIAN SHERIDAN Hillbrook Farm

39 Terrify is now EX-91 and completes six generations of Excellent cows in the Trina family. Her own dam is a 2E-93 Fred and then there are FOUR generations of EX-94 cows! Terrify has developed into a very impressive individual and David has three Goldsun daughters of her born in December that are very special. Terrify s first daughter, a Ross, is now VG-85 and she also has a Sid bred heifer. David will offer four #1 Goldsun embryos in the Delaware County Sale on May 4 truly a great way to make a name for himself given the fancy siblings he has at home. Plans for Terrify are a flush to Goldwyn in the near future something that David has wanted to do for some time and given the way she is transmitting, a successful flush could be very exciting. Brian Sheridan owns some cows here and one he has with David is Criter-Ridge Alert Rachel (VG-85, 1st calf), an Alert daughter from a VG- 88 Durham, then 12 generations of Excellents back to Audrey Posch (EX- 93). Just fresh with her second calf, Alert has developed into a fine young cow. Another promising young cow owned by David & Brian is Larkindale Advent Martha, a second-calf Advent daughter from an EX-91 Talent followed by an EX-93 Emory. Another cow easy to notice is Larkindale Damion Farrah (VG-88), a big, framey Erbacres Damion daughter that completes 10 generations of VG or EX. The renovations to the barn are paying off and one of the impressive aspects of this facility is the stainless steel mangers in front of the cows. David first saw them at Silver Spoon Dairy and liked what he saw and how well they were working for the Galley family. The mangers are easy to clean and the feed stays very fresh in front of the cows. Hard work, a dream, and the wisdom and fortitude to make the dream a reality are all aspects of why David Randall is succeeding at Hillbrook Farm. Anyone could benefit from having a conversation with this enthusiastic young man. He knows what he wants and is not afraid to go for it and work for it. One can only imagine the heights of success he will attain in years to come. Silver Spoon Dairy A pleasant jaunt to Garrattsville brought us to Silver Spoon Dairy, owned and operated by David & Cathy SONJA GALLEY Silver Spoon Dairy Galley and their children Sonja, Sarah, and Sean. The Galleys farm a beautiful valley of flat, productive land, working over 300 acres total to feed their herd of 70 milking cows and the accompanying young stock. The entire Galley family is active in the local community, their church, and the Holstein fraternity. Sonja and Sean were both New York Distinguished Junior Members and Cathy serves on the NYHA Executive Committee as well as coordinating sponsorships for the New York Spring Dairy Carousel. Stepping into the milking barn, it is obvious that this is a highly productive herd. Big frames, high, wide rear udders, and super feet and legs abound. Two years ago, the barn was renovated with bigger stalls, a higher tie rail, refurbished mangers, and other things that make for contented, trouble-free cows and a pleasant environment to care for them. Sonja is the herdsperson and does a fantastic job with the cows. She formerly worked at Conant Acres in Maine and credits much of her increased knowledge of cow care and breeding to the Conant and Keene families. Galleys have won the prestigious Progressive Breeders Registry award three times and it is easy to see why. The herd today is averaging 86 lbs. a day and sports a herd average over 24,000 lbs. of milk and a BAA around 107. One of the first cows one sees is Silver-Spoon GW Dayna-ET (EX-91), a massive Goldwyn daughter that hails from the Snow-N Denises Dellia (3E-95 GMD-DOM) family. Her dam, Regancrest SP Delivery (VG-85) was a raffle calf won by Sarah Galley at the 2001 National Convention. Galleys are now milking two full sisters to Dayna and if they turn out anything like their big sister, they will be powerful influences on the herd in the future. Probably one of the greatest cows Brian and I saw all day was Joleanna Duplex Appletini (EX-94), a Duplex daughter that is tall, long, dairy, and has a fantastic mammary system. Cathy bought Appletini as a month-old calf at the Joleanna Summer Premier in Appletini has two daughters by Prentice and Prospector and is due again in July to Bradnick. She bears an interesting pedigree, tracing back to Stanley Zabriskie s East-Cupcake herd in Aurora. Another herd and family favorite is Silver-Spoon Jochebed-ET (EX- 91), a Jordan daughter from an EX- 92 Durham that has been a great transmitter and show favorite through the years. One that might just take her place is Holmesacres Ardf Abbey-Red- ET, a super-fancy, beautifully-uddered Arudolf daughter from Stoncree Advt Arctic-Red-ET (EX-92), a thirdgeneration Excellent. Galleys are quick to credit their success to a whole herd approach. They state that the comfortable facilities, management, consistently good feed and bunk management, careful, thought-out breeding decisions, and attention to detail are truly paying off. The farm typically merchandizes dairy replacements each year, another boon to the farm s bottom line. This great herd is destined for further heights and is a great stop when traveling along Rt. 51. Tiger Lily Holsteins Heading back south, Brian and I made a quick stop at Tiger Lily Holsteins, where Matt MacLaury, one of the herdsmen, showed us some of the highlights of this great herd. The Marshman family is well known in Holstein circles, and today s operation is run by brothers John and David, with their dad, Bob, still an active part of the team during the cropping season. Matt is breeding Holsteins under the Madmule prefix. He and Brian own cattle together and one of their stellar young cows is Field of Dreams MATT MACLAURY WITH BRIAN SHERIDAN Madmule Holsteins NYN April

40 Shottle Dip. A tall, good uddered young cow with lots of dairyness, this Shottle daughter is backed by nine generations of VG & EX cows. She has a really nice December 12 Beau daughter. Matt has great knowledge of the Tiger Lily herd and pointed out several of the favorite Red & White Holsteins that Tiger Lily shows. He also pointed out the Numero Uno daughters of Tiger-Lily Planet Limbo (VG-85), one of which is GTPI and will sell in the New York Spring Sale on April 13. Limbo was right ready to calve again and has developed into a deep-ribbed cow with lots of substance. Maple Dream Farm Just over the hills from Marshman Farms is the great Maple Dream herd of Mary Klecha Conroe. For those that appreciate deep cow families, high type, and a real passion for breeding fantastic Holsteins, this farm is a real treat. There have been 52 homebred Excellents here to date and there will be many, many more! It is a magnificent herd, expertly bred and cared for. Mary was kind enough to make a pass with the grain cart to get the cows up and what a sight it is! This is a hightype herd of unusual uniformity. The two long rows are full of tall cows with super udders, strong and open in the rib with plenty of width and substance throughout. Among the milking herd are close to 30 Red & Whites and that number continues to grow. Mary has used Advent, September Storm, Talent, Jet-Red, Reality-Red, & Absolute with great success. The Reality daughters are among her favorites aggressive eaters that really milk and possess terrific udders. Sanchez has also left a great group of daughters here and as they calve in for the second time, Mary is even more impressed with them. Sires being used heavily in the herd today include Braxton, Brady, Aftershock, and Redburst to name a few. Mary s goal, in her own words, is to have a herd of deep-pedigreed cows that mature slowly and gracefully, getting better every year. One of the great matrons of this herd, and an incentive to breed more Red & Whites, is Maple-Dream Rub Blossom-Red (2E-93), a grand Rubens daughter that has been shown very successfully through the years. Blossom has several daughters in the herd today through ET work, and she is proving herself to be one of those true-breeding cows that transmits her 40 - NYN April 2013 MARY KLECHA CONROE Maple Dream Farm best qualities to her daughters. One very special daughter is Maple-Dream Adv Blos-Red-ET (EX-92), tall, long, and dairy with a spectacular udder. A Jet-Red daughter of Blossom is just fresh and will be one to watch in the future. Blossom continues on a flush program and her influence here will be profound. While this is a predominantly homebred herd, Mary has also woven in some new cow families. She bought at the Quality Farms Sale in 2008 and one that has developed well is Quality Gibson Ledi (EX-91), a lovely Gibson daughter that goes back to Plushanski Chief Faith (4E-94-GMD). Ledi s beautiful Shottle daughter is VG-85 and is a terrific young cow milking very well in her second lactation. Another of the really special young cows here is Ms Tiger-Lily Fin-Red-ET (VG-85), a Reality daughter from three Excellent dams in the Stoncree Factor Festive (2E-93) family. Fin has an incredible udder and symbolizes that good young cow that gets better every year that Mary is looking to build upon. Another great cow family here traces 10 generations of Excellents back to Gray View B-D Crissy (EX-93). Mary has high hopes for the daughters of Maple-Dream RM Cindy-Red-ET (EX-91), potential 11th generation Excellents. With great cow care the priority, an intensive grazing program that works very well, and a real passion for breeding, Maple Dream Farm is one of the stellar homebred herds in New York State and worth every minute one can spend with its enjoyable owner. Aukema Dairy Our final stop of the day was a fitting end to a terrific tour. Doug & Pat Aukema and their family have farmed in Chenango Forks since 1967 and they have built a great herd of cattle with several Excellents and a terrific group of younger cows, the lowest of which is scored GP-81. The Aukema family appreciates great type and strong cow families and they are also very active in showing each summer. Just ready to calve at the time was their EX-91 Talent daughter, Forever- Hopeful Tal Favor, a tall, long cow with three records over 30,000 milk. Favor has a Shottle daughter due in June. Just fresh at the time of our visit with a Bradnick heifer calf was Shoresbrook Armee-ET, a fancy Goldwyn daughter out of an EX-94 Durham. A homebred favorite here is Aukema-Dairy Aspen Jenny (EX-90), a third generation EX and a VG-86 Pronto daughter from the same cow family is one of many good young cows in this herd. The big news at Aukema Dairy is that the family is venturing into the realm of bottling their own milk in April, opening a retail store, and is giving farm tours to help bridge the gap between producers and consumers. Aukemas is the closest farm to the city of Binghamton and rather than see that as a liability, they are turning it into an asset! Brian Aukema, who works for Extension part-time, farms with his parents and he has taken an integral role in setting the new direction for the farm. He, his wife, Crystal, and his brother Jim and sister-in-law Barb, will all be involved in the new business. Under the name Dutch Hill Creamery, their plan is to bottle and sell their own milk, produce cheese curd, and eventually offer a variety of locally-grown products through their store. Brian has been studying and talking with others for a couple years and the soon-to-be-finished bottling facility and retail store is truly an exciting endeavor for the family. This new energy and new business will certainly be worth watching and visiting in the future. It is exciting for the Aukema family as well as those in the community who will benefit from locally-produced, high-quality milk and cheese. BRIAN AUKEMA & THE NEXT GENERATION Aukema Dairy

44 This Month in the NY Holstein News 1955 (Volume 10) In its advertisement, the Holstein- Friesian Association of America made a comparison between breed improvement and mountain climbing. Those of us who admire courage, determination, and achievement against great odds, cherish the picture of the alpinist, triumphantly planting his pennant in the snows of a hitherto unclimbed peak. One can ascend the foothills with ease reach the passes and plateaus merely by observing the simplest rules of the game. It s the last mad scramble to the summit that s tough and it s here there the truest climber is separated from those out for a stroll. Breed improvement is like mountain climbing. It isn t unduly difficult to turn a herd of scrubs into mediocre dairy cows. A couple of crossings to an average bull (plus good management) will bring about reasonably good production. These are the foothills and the passes. Creating a champion dairy cow, or a truly great herd, is the peak and those who get there are breeders, not just dairymen out for a stroll. With an average of 430 pounds of butterfat and 12,000 pounds of milk per cow per year, our breed is already well up the mountainside. Making the registration certificate mean more getting to the top is going to be tough, but while the job is a big one, just like the alpinist, we are assured of a great reward (Volume 41) Capitalizing on Carousel, centered on three successful Holstein farms in New York State who had taken advantage of the outstanding genetics offered through the sales held during New York s Spring Dairy Carousel. Stephen & Christine Putman of Tora Farm, Heuvelton and Howard & Kathy Harrison of Walworth were big volume buyers at the 1985 Carousel, and each shared success stories of their purchases. The third participants were Dale & Grenda Chapin of Blue-Top Farm, Inc., North Bangor, who had been regular Carousel buyers over the years. Like Putmans and Harrisons, Dale Chapin emphasized the importance of going to the sale ahead of time and taking time to study the pedigrees. Visual inspection is key, he noted. Holstein Association consultant William Engel wrote An Open Letter to a Beginning Breeder, offering sage words to those making the switch from grade to registered Holsteins. His main points included: 1- Never, never buy a registered animal that will not fit into the top 30 percent of your herd; and 2- Try to be prepared to buy at any time. Bargains are always out there, ready for the taking. Langel concluded that breeders who have made the smoothest transition to a completely registered herd were the ones who did an excellent job of managing their grades. When they finally sold those grade cows, they received a premium price which allowed them to pay more for registered cattle. You can t let your goal keep you from making a living. Presentation of awards to be held at the annual NDS awards banquet in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on Wednesday September 11, O-H-M Holstein Club News By Ginny Wolfe, Club Reporter O-H-M Holstein Club members have been busy making plans for their yearly activities starting with a barn meeting to be hosted by Club director Brittany Nellis at their family farm, Nellis Acres on Saturday afternoon, March 30th. The farm has been in the Nellis family since 1723 and is just north of the Mohawk River in the Ft. Plain area of Montgomery County. John & Chris Nellis have developed a herd of 100 registered Holsteins along with their daughters, Brittany & Erin. The current rolling herd average is over 23,500 lbs. with a BAA of 105%. Brittany s interest in Red & White Holsteins has resulted in over 20 head in their current herd. Several members of the O-H-M Club have already had herd classification in recent weeks with real satisfying results, mostly on homebred animals. Congratulations to those with VG 2-year-olds in their herds: The Canary family in St. Johnsville, Kerry Stowell, also of St. Johnsville, Jim Hudson of Ft. Plain, Dennis Treen & Susan Mower of Maypar Farm, West Winfield, Scott Key of R-Key-Vale Farm of Sharon Springs, and Rob & Shirley Hudyncia of Hu-Hill Holsteins in Fort Plain. Congratulations to Hudyncias who also had three new homebred Excellents, along with Scott & Ray Key, and Kerry Stowell who also had new Excellent cows. Saturday evening, April 6th is the date set for the club s annual Jr.-Sr. Spring Banquet to be held at the Waterfront Grille in Herkimer, located right across Rte. 28 from the NYS Thruway entrance. The theme for this year s event will be on the junior dairy bowl competition. It should be a fun evening to socialize and help the juniors celebrate their successful year of activities including the announcement of the Alan Fassett Memorial Calf Scholarship winner and the O-H-M Distinguished Jr. Members. Reservations are to be made with junior member Austin Ainslie at Our sympathy goes out to Shirley Leonard and family of Cherry Valley on the death of John S. Leonard Jr. John passed away on March 6, 2013 at the age of 86. John & Shirley celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on September 25th. John was an outstanding breeder of registered Holsteins under the Lensego prefix and a very active member of our O-H-M Holstein Club. He served as a club director for six years and two years as the club s president. One of his best bred cows, Lensego Triple Threat Taffy, was sold through a club sale. She went to a Colorado dairy and then was purchased by Airosa Dairy Farms of Pixley, CA. She eventually scored 4E-93 and became one of the favorite foundation cows at Airosa Dairy and also one of their best show cows. Taffy produced a 4E-94 GMD-DOM Starbuck daughter as well as an EX-91-DOM Valiant daughter. The annual club show will be held with Schoharie County Holstein Club at the Cobleskill fairground on Saturday, July 13th with Derek Johnson as the official judge. And the date for the annual Club Sale is Saturday, October 19th. Mark your calendars and save the dates NYN April 2013

52 Breanna FulpEr Financial Advisor Financial Stress Busters As a dairyman or farmer, you may be too busy to realize it, but April is Stress Awareness Month, which is designed to promote awareness about ways to reduce stress in our lives. And if you re a member of the socalled Sandwich Generation, you may well have plenty of stress to deal with especially financial stress. And that s why you may want to look at this month as an opportunity to explore ways of de-stressing yourself. To understand the scope of the problem facing people in your situation, consider this: One out of every eight Americans aged 40 to 60 is raising a child while caring for an aging parent, according to the Pew Research Center. The definition of eldercare can range from having the parent living in one s home to helping pay for the parent s stay in an assisted living or nursing home facility. When you consider the costs involved in this type of care, added to the expenses of raising your children and possibly even providing some financial support to them as young adults, it s easy to see how you could potentially face enormous strains, both emotionally and financially. To help ease this burden, consider these suggestions: Save. As a Sandwich Generation member, you re probably within shouting distance of your own retirement so you need to save for it. This may not be easy. You don t know how much financial support you may someday have to provide your elderly parents and even after your children are grown, they may need some help from you. Unfortunately, in helping these boomerang children, many people disrupt their day-to-day cash flow and raid their savings. That s why it s important to try to pay yourself first by deferring part of each paycheck into a 401(k) and by automatically moving money each month from your checking or savings account into an IRA. Talk. Many people in the Greatest Generation (over age 80) have not even prepared a will. If your parents are in that group, you may want to talk to them about taking action. Also, find out whom, if anyone, is handling their investments. And ask if your parents understand how Medicare works and if they need to add supplemental health insurance, such as Medigap. Plus, you need to find out if your parents have created a power of attorney or health care directive. It s best to have these conversations sooner rather than later. Delegate. You eventually may have to take some responsibility for your parents care but you don t have to do it alone. You could, for example, work with a financial services firm that offers trust services, which can be invaluable if your parents are incapacitated and useful even if they aren t. A professional trust officer can, among other duties, help manage your parents investments, pay their bills, keep their records, and supervise distribution of their assets to beneficiaries. In short, a qualified trust officer can make life a lot easier for you. Stress Awareness Month lasts only 30 days, but by taking the right steps, you can de-stress yourself for many years to come. After all, just because you re in the Sandwich Generation, it doesn t mean you have to be squished. Consider me your resource; a true farm girl at heart who understands the dynamics of a farm family and the important financial decisions that need to be made. You can call me anytime with the simplest question to the most complex situation at (315) or breanna.fulper@edwardjones.com NYN April 2013
