Boston Ave. Tour with meeting to follow at the studio SW Corner of 81 st and Sheridan Minutes and Reports Minutes for the August Membership Meeting August 12 th, 2014 Michael V s Restaurant Quorum Present Dustin Meyer, TDInc. Evaluator and Therapy Dog Team Leader discussed what it took to have your dog registered as a therapy dog. Question and Answer period followed. Meeting was called to order by Lori Finlayson at 7:40 PM. Jennifer Block made a motion to accept the minutes as circulated in the newsletter. Second by Jana Davis. Motion accepted unanimously. Information was given out about the RDOD. For Mid Continent to get credit from AKC, four members must attend. It costs $200 to support this activity, some of which might get returned to the club. There was discussion about the benefits for the club by attending. Treasurer s report was not available, as Jim was not in attendance. Two Terrier judges have been picked out and hired for the show in Names of preferred judges need to be submitted in writing by the end of the meeting. There was lengthy discussion about the affordability of the show. Can we afford the Fairgrounds if we are the only club holding a show at that specific time? Can we get the same deal as last year? Linda Moore made a suggestion of the possibility of forming a committee to look at all aspects of the show with fresh eyes and make recommendations for the future. This should be someone who is not presently involved with the organization of the show. Areas to be evaluated might include: venue, alternative dates, joining with another club again, and the possibility of having the agility trial again. A motion was made by Linda Moore that a strategic planning committee for the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Round-up shows be formed. Recommendations would be made and they would get back to the membership. Catherine Peters second. Three opposed. Motion passed. The Run was cancelled, as suggestion was made to not make it about the dogs. This would go against our original intention. Profits would be slim unless we were able to get donors. Hunter Park is still reserved for 9/20/14, so perhaps it might be used for the non-sporting group club event.

2 Patty Heckathorn will be the new Mid-Continent Kennel Club Facebook Coordinator. She will get the information she needs from the present administrator. Thank you Linda Moore and Jennifer Block for reviewing/revising the Constitution. Linda discussed the possibility of printing the constitution and bylaws for members vs ing them, and members could print for themselves. Patty Heckathorn is investigating a possible Handler s Seminar, with either Norma Smith or Michael Kemp. The September membership meeting will be held at the Channel Six studio. It will begin at 7 pm. Steve Schroeder will give a tour of the studio and then the meeting will be held in one of their meeting rooms afterwards. It was undecided as to whether or not to have dinner somewhere downtown prior to the meeting. The October meeting will be the picnic at the Harber s. Date is yet to be determined. 3 AKC and National News 2014 AKC Breeder of the Year Award Group Honorees Named The American Kennel Club announced the 2014 AKC Breeder of the Year Award group recipients, recognizing seven breeding programs from the Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding groups that are dedicated to excellence and the advancement of the purebred dog. The 2014 AKC Breeder of the Year will be announced Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Orlando, Florida. Sporting Group: Valerie Nunes-Atkinson and Yvonne Hassler-Deterding, VJK-MYST German Shorthaired Pointers VJK-MYST dogs have earned everything from number one in the breed, Bests in Show and group wins to National Specialty wins, Best in Specialties, and National Sweepstakes and Futurity wins in both the United States and countries around the world. Hound: Jeanine Sudinski and Mechelle Sudinski-Stall, Lucene Dachshunds Many of today s top-winning Dachshunds have the Lucene kennel name somewhere in their pedigree. Together, the mother-daughter pair has produced 300 champions that have won major awards at many of the most important events in dogdom, including the Dachshund Club of America National Specialty and the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Working: Gwen DeMilta and Carissa DeMilta Shimpeno, Alisaton Doberman Pinschers Alisaton dogs have won all-breed and specialty Bests in Show, Doberman Pinscher Club of America (DPCA) National Specialties, Top 20 in Conformation and Obedience, numerous DPCA Winners Dog and Winners Bitch awards, Grand Prize Futurities and a Westminster Kennel Club Group First. Terrier: Matt Stander and Eugene Zaphiris, Cragsmoor Skye Terriers Dogs in the Cragsmoor Skye Terrier breeding program have included the top-winning Skye Terrier in the history of the breed, the 2011 Purina Show Dog of the Year, the first terrier of any breed to win the Terrier Group at both the World Dog Show and the Westminster Kennel Club, and top-producing sires and dams. Cragsmoor dogs have won 85 all-breed Bests in Show to date and over 400 Terrier Group firsts. Toy: Kathleen Kolbert, Turyanne Yorkshire Terriers Over the years, the Turyanne line has produced more than 225 champions, including two World Champions and several International Champions. Register of Merit sires and numerous obedience and agility titlists have also come from the ranks of the Turyanne Yorkshire Terriers. Non-Sporting: Rod and Patti Strand, Merry Go Round Dalmatians Merry-Go-Round Dalmatians is known for producing long-lived dogs with excellent temperaments, good movement and spectacular beauty. The Strands have bred, owned and shown numerous top-producing sires as well as dams, more than 150 champions, many top 10 winners, and Best in Show dogs, including the topwinning Dalmatian in breed history. Herding: Jim Buzzard, Buzzard Australian Cattle Dogs Jim Buzzard s passion for the Australian Cattle Dog (ACD) began as a young ranch hand on a cattle farm in the early 1960s. The very first Herding Excellent (HX) title ever awarded went to a Buzzard ACD named Ch. Buzzards Red Tubs. That dog also sired 90 champions, a record for Australian Cattle Dogs that has yet to be matched. The breeding program has produced close to 400 AKC champions. For more information, please see:

4 MCKC Community News Fall Picnic and October Meeting at the Harber s Celebrate the splendors of autumn at the MCKC Fall Picnic. This year s event will once again be held at the home of Deby and Jim Harber in Mounds. The club will furnish the main course (typically BBQ) and beverages. Members are encouraged to bring hors d'oeuvres, side dishes, desserts, and alcoholic beverages if desired. There will be a short meeting to discuss club business. This is always a wonderful event, filled with good conversation and a relaxed atmosphere. Make plans to join your friends on Sunday, October 19 th. Directions and details to follow. 5 Race for the Cure in Tulsa For those of you suffering from run withdrawal (Marc), Lori Finlayson would like to form a team to Race for the Cure against breast cancer. Lori hopes to get enough members and friends together to participate and honor her mom, Lola Hodges, who fought long and hard against breast cancer. You don't have to run the whole way, and there are many options--a short 1 mile stroll, 5K, or any of the other choices. Dogs are welcome on the 1 mile, and Lori will check and see if the dogs can go on the 5K. The event takes place on September 27 th. In addition to area rescue groups, attendees can visit with local pet related businesses including vets, trainers, retailers, groomers, and doggy day care. Tulsa SPCA Bingo Bash Date: September 20 th Admission: $30 each or $200 for a table of 8 Location: Founders Hall, Schusterman Learning Center, 4502 East 41st Street, Tulsa Description: Bingo games with great prizes, a silent auction, buffet, 50/50 raffle, wine-grab bag, restaurant pull and a cash bar. Everyone always has a great time and leaves with some wonderful items! MCKC Newsletter Writer/Editor Needed After more than five years as your MCKC newsletter writer/editor, I am stepping down at the end of I am hopeful that someone will take on this assignment, as it is an important way that the club communicates with our members and records things for our archive.
