Charles Simmons, Membership chair requested a vote of the membership for Felix Lee. Felix was voted in by the members present. Karen presented a ballot to the membership to vote for possible dates they would be able to work at an agility trial in the fall. Ballots were then given to Jim Fehring. 2 MCKC Community News MCKC 2011 Awards Banquet Honors Members and Community The 2011 MCKC Annual Awards Banquet and Benefit was held on January 15 th, 2011 at Michael V s restaurant. Those in attendance shared great food and lively conversation, and also had the opportunity to support Tulsa Animal Welfare (Shelter) through participation in the silent action. Items up for bidding included custom artwork, vintage MCKC windbreakers, a large Kong dog bed, jewelry, a wild bird feeder basket, and many other interesting and delightful items. Participation was excellent, and the club raised over $656 for a heart monitor for the new Tulsa Animal Welfare operating suite. Along with recognizing the achievements of members and their dogs in the show and performance rings, the club bestowed several special awards. Jim Harber was the recipient of the Betty Charles Award, recognizing his efforts in promoting the club, the Tulsa Round Up Shows and reaching out to vendors across the region. Jamie Wooley received the AKC Good Sportsmanship Award for her willingness to perform some of the clubs more tedious jobs with good grace and patience (trophies, anyone?). The It s In the Contract Award was given to Ann Stiles and accepted by Jean Letcher, manager of Tulsa Animal Welfare. Ann Stiles was recognized for her dedicated volunteer work and for exhibiting the qualities of responsible ownership, care and concern for the animals in our lives. 3 March Meeting to Feature Oklahoma Veterinary Specialists Dr. Steven Hodges, DVM and Dr. Zachary Ricker, DVM, MS, of Oklahoma Veterinary Specialists, will be our guest speakers at the March membership meeting. OVS provides 24/7 emergency care in a state-of-the-art facility in Jenks. Dr. Hodges, a native of Jenks, OK, is a 2002 graduate of Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Following graduation he completed a 1 year rotating Medicine of Surgery Internship at Veterinary Care Animal Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. He then completed a 1 year Emergency Medicine Clerkship at Michigan Veterinary Specialists in Detroit, MI, where he remained an additional 3 years to complete a Small Animal Internal Medicine Residency. Dr. Hodges became Board Certified in Small Animal Internal Medicine in 2007 and founded Oklahoma Veterinary Specialists that same year. Seeing the need for a multi-specialty and emergency veterinary hospital, Dr. Hodges expanded his practice in 2008 to include 24/7 Emergency Critical Care. In 2009, Dr. Hodges partnered with Dr. Zach Ricker who provides a referral surgery service for OVS. Dr. Hodges' wife, Sonya, is a Practice Manager at OVS. They have 2 sons, Bryce (6) and Kade (4). Dr. Ricker completed his doctorate in veterinary medicine at Oklahoma State University followed by a rotating medicine and surgery internship at Texas A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine. He then returned to OSU to complete a three year small animal surgery residency and concurrent Master's program in Veterinary Biomedical Science. His training covers all aspects of veterinary surgery including: neurosurgery, orthopedics, oncologic (cancer) surgery, abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery and heart surgery. His wife, Rachel Ricker, is a Missions Pastor at South Tulsa Lifechurch.tv Campus. They currently have a cat... named Dog. Let s Not Forget About Tulsa s Cats While most of us are naturally devoted to the promotion of responsible dog ownership, our loyalties do not end with canines. Many of us have multi-pet households which also include cats. If you would like to help the cats of Tulsa, make plans to join StreetCats, Inc., for My Furry Valentine, a dessert tasting and silent auction to be held on February 13 th at the Tulsa Historical Society. The cost is $25 per person, or $45 per couple. StreetCats, Inc is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to shelter cats that have been abandoned or lost, and to find new homes for them. The cats that they take in are adoptable cats who may have strayed or been abandoned, or whose owners were forced to give them up due to economic difficulties. StreetCats does not place a time limit on a healthy cat's life; they keep each cat until a home is found. For more information on the organization and the event, visit

4 AKC s Most Popular Dogs in the U.S. The American Kennel Club announced its nationwide registration statistics for 2010, revealing that for the 20th consecutive year, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed in America. This year s list included some shakeups in the top 10 the Beagle overtook the Golden Retriever for the 4th spot and the Bulldog, who has been steadily rising up in rank, took 6th place away from the Boxer, who dropped to 7th in "Not since the early 20th Century has the Bulldog enjoyed such sustained popularity," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. " Bob was the first AKC registered Bulldog in 1886, and today the breed enjoys its highest ranking in 100 years at number 6." 2010 Most Popular 2009 Ranking Dogs in the U.S. 1. Labrador Retriever 1. Shih Tzu Most Notable Dog Trends On This Year s List Include: The most popular breeds with the biggest increase in rankings over the past year include the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (from 108th to 93rd), the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (from 101st to 88th) and the Smooth Fox Terrier (from 123rd to 110th). The French Bulldog made the largest leap in the past decade, jumping 50 places from 71st to 21st. "Bully" breeds have been steadily increasing over the past decade, including the Bull Terrier (from 78th to 53rd) and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (from 97th to 74th). Among smaller dogs that rose in the rankings were the Yorkshire Terrier (from 7th to 3rd), the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (from 54th to 23rd) and the Havanese (from 86th to 31st), proving that they are top of the Toys. A trend toward larger breeds is seen with the rise of the Great Dane (from 28th to 17th), Mastiff (from 39th to 28th), Newfoundland (from 53rd to 44th), Bernese Mountain Dog (from 58th to 39th) and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (from 104th to 88th). In addition, the AKC expanded its litter of registered breeds on January 1 to welcome the Norwegian Lundehund, the Xoloitzcuintli and the Entlebucher Mountain Dog - growing next year s list of Most Popular Breeds to 170 dogs.
