Members of MHGRC rejoice! This year the Nominating Committee was tasked with finding a new club President. Sally Sjobeck s name was suggested by several members and amazingly she agreed to take on this job for the coming year. Since no other nominations were made from the floor at the September meeting, Sally is our new president! She will bring fresh ideas along with organizational skills and a different perspective. The remainder of the Mile Hi Board will stay the same. Many thanks to these dedicated workers! They have been a fun group and I appreciate them. The date is set for the Connie Cleveland seminar Dogs are Problem Solvers sponsored by MHGRC. 2 Message from Anne Shannon Connie Cleveland Seminar The date is set for the Connie Cleveland seminar Dogs are Problem Solvers sponsored by MHGRC. Although I initially scheduled Connie for our mid-march date in 2014 when we normally hold our breakfast meeting, free food and then the Goldens Only fun match, I was able to revise that date to the last weekend in March. I don t know what I was thinking with the first date but the second will work out better in terms of the membership keeping their regular event and Connie coming in two weeks later March 30 & 31. The format for Connie s seminar begins with a discussion of how dogs learn and then proceeds to work with the teams present to solve individual problems. Connie is unique in that she doesn t bring one of her own dogs; instead she works with the dogs that are in attendance. I have been to Connie s seminars several times and she is one of the best. If you want to check her out look up her film clips on YouTube. Interestingly, not only does Connie train first-class obedience dogs, she has trained and competed in field trials with both labs and goldens. At the most recent GRCA National in Texas, Connie placed 4 th in the Open Stake with one dog and got the RJAM in Amateur with her AFC-OTCH Topbrass Caleb. You don t often (if ever) see a dog with both an Obedience Championship and a Field Championship. It s REALLY hard Connie is a talented trainer and a very unique, interesting woman. We will post a flyer shortly! Thank you, Thank you I want to thank the membership for making my term in office special. MHGRC is such a terrific club. It has been an honor to serve as President. I always regard Mile Hi as one of the leaders in the Denver dog community and you never fail me! Every event we undertake is done beautifully and with a sense of fun and camaraderie. Thanks for a great three years!

In 2002 she became one of a handful of Colorado veterinarians to complete the rigorous process of becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners ( Her deep commitment to improving the quality of life of her patients brought her back to Colorado State University in 2005 where she completed a 3 year residency in anesthesia and a 2 year post doctoral fellowship in integrative pain medicine. She became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists ( in Dr. Mich is the driving force behind OrthoPets Center of Animal Pain Management Clinic and co-owner of OrthoPets, V-OP, the first of its kind of practice dedicated to both advanced pain medicine and mobility solutions for animals. She brings a unique blend of extensive experience as a general practitioner, advanced academic training in anesthesiology and pain medicine, and a strong commitment to innovation in the field of algology (pain science). Dr. Mich is actively involved in developing new therapeutic techniques. Patsy will give a talk a variety of subjects related to innovative canine orthopedic solutions including; braces versus surgery for certain types of injuries, new therapies, and advanced pain management. 4 MHGRC Meeting The meeting was called to order by President Anne Shannon at 7:45 p.m. following a social hour at the home of Bruce and Angela McLean. The minutes of the July 2013 meeting were approved as they appeared in the Newsletter. Treasurer s Report Angela McLean reported that the current bank balance is $31,317. There are still some expenses to be paid from the Hunt Test, but the event did make money. The two day Independent Specialty lost about $6K, which is only a little more of a loss than the single day event last year. Vice-President s Report Bruce Evashevski reported that we have two applications for membership. John & Pam Biard were present at the meeting and their application was approved. They are currently showing their young dog in conformation and may start agility training. We also have an application from Sonja Dorr of Gillette WY, who attended both the Specialty and the CCA. She was approved. OLD BUSINESS Kathy Frizell gave a wrap-up of the recent Hunt Test. Everything went well except for one complaint about a bitch in season being on the grounds. Jerry Mann, AKC Field Rep., attended the test. One problem was that the Senior Test entries were so high that one of the judges almost missed a flight. A discussion ensued about the high participation by folks practicing for the upcoming Master Nationals due to the fact that MHGRC is a Master National Club. Without that status, the Test could accommodate more Junior and Senior entries. A task force could be created to examine this situation for next year. A Chair for the event is also needed. Nancy Ego suggested that the club hold a Field Fun Days event. The Johnson s or Dorband s properties might be possible locations. Chatfield can also be used but permits are required. Stillroven costs $500. per day and could be combined with practice for obedience and tracking. It is closed from November-April for hunting. There was discussion about the two day Independent Specialty. The conformation entries were up significantly, but agility and obedience entries were way down. At this year s event, we did not use local judges and we did not hold the Silent Auction, so that contribute to the overall loss on the event. In 2014, the goal will be to find conformation judges who can also judge at the Greeley shows. Anne has submitted the names of Alison Desmaris and Eric Strickland to the Greeley committee. If GKC accepts the judges, they will pick up their travel expenses. MHGRC will put them up at the Greeley Guest House. The Agility trial part of the Specialty could be changed to a Sporting Group only entry, which is allowed by the AKC and would help cover the expenses. We need a general Chair for next year s event. Lauren Relay is willing to Co-Chair. Kathy Janda will chair the Agility trial. We need a Chair for the Obedience portion. Randy Watson will do Grounds again. Carol Hantt & Beth Olsen will handle Hospitality. Ruthie Nordahl will take care of ribbons. Lauren and Angela will arrange for the Trophies. One meeting and we have almost all the important jobs covered!

5 MHGRC Meeting page 2 COMMITTEE REPORTS Obedience Monica Keracik was not at the meeting. Agility Laura Gillice was not present, but Angela McLean reported that the July trial made about $6K. The judges have been hired for 2014, but the Dougco contracts still need to be completed. Field Keith Winch was not at the meeting. Conformation No report. NEW BUSINESS MHGRC may wish to host a Western Regional in the next couple of years. The schedule will need to be determined before we can take action on this. Some new equipment is needed for future Hunt Tests. GRNews ad for the Field issue. Sally Sjobeck will put that together. The November 15 club meeting will feature a presentation by Dr Patricia Meagh from Orthopets about braces and prosthetics for animals. The club will provide a light snack for attendees. Anne Shannon will work on finding the location. The club Xmas Party will be Saturday Dec 7 at the home of Bruce and Angela McLean. The Dec match dates at Jeffco have been organized. Mile High Sporting Dogs will manage the conformation side of the event. Monica Keracik will organize the Obedience/Rally part with help from Nancy Ego. A beginning field training seminar has been suggested for Sunday. Kathy Frizell and Sally Sjobeck will work or organizing that with help from Maureen Murphy. Deb Anderson will haul the trailer. The Connie Cleveland Seminar is scheduled for March 2014 on the same weekend as our usual matches at Jeffco. Anne would like to host the seminar at Training for Grace rather than use Jeffco Fairgrounds. Laura Gillice has agreed to set up an agility fun match for one of the days reserved at Jeffco. We will discuss possibilities for the second day at a future time. Anne Shannon and Warren Frizell reported that the Nominating Committee is submitting the following slate of officers for President- Sally Sjobeck Vice President- Bruce Evashevski Secretary-Mardee Kayser Treasurer- Angela McLean Agility- Laura Gillice Conformation- Randy Watson Field- Keith Winch Obedience- Monica Keracik The official election will occur at the November meeting. Nominations will be taken from the floor at the meeting prior to the voting. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.

6 Conformation The results from the GRCA National Specialty are beginning to trickle in, and while the next newsletter may have more complete results (due to the newsletter deadline) we do know that Race, owned by Lauren Relay and Diane Mueller won Best Veteran and a Judges Award of Merit. Also, Kelly, owned by Theresa Yearger & Kathy Bourland made the final cut in American Bred Bitches at the National. This is no small task given this was one of the largest American Bred entries for Golden s this year! Stay tuned to the next newsletter for more complete National Specialty results! Since the first of September Michele Janowaik has kept Hawkeye very busy, with ten placements over the past seven weeks! During this period of time he has won a Best of Breed, three Best of Winner s, two more Winner s Dog and four Reserve Winner s Dog. I am sure that he is looking forward to the Holiday break! While the show season is winding down, don t forget that the Mile High Sporting Dog Fancier s is having a B Match on December 14 th at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Event Center. 9 MACH U-CDX U-ACH U-RO3 Emilys Mme Layla Could Be Blue CDX RE MXB MJS OF CGC Like a fool, I feel in love with you. You turned my whole world up-side down. The lyrics to Eric Clapton s Layla could not describe my journey with my own Layla an more accurately. Layla came into my life on my fifteenth birthday and changed my life forever. We have had quite the amazing ride, most especially in the agility ring. Layla is best known for her bouncy, happy-go-lucky attitude, and unmistakable barking, but it wasn t always this way. Layla began her agility career as a serious and sensitive girl. As Layla moved from novice to masters, her confidence and love of the game grew immensely. A little more than a year ago, I decided to more seriously pursue Layla s MACH because Layla, along with my (then) new puppy Jade, came to live with me when I moved off campus. At the time, Layla and I were still learning to connect with each other. Layla was only earning two or three points per jumpers run. Incredibly, Layla has shaved as much as 10 seconds off of her runs! Every run with Layla is such a gift. I have learned and continue to learn so much from my special girl. Seeing Layla have so much fun expressing herself and talking back to me with her classic Bark! Bark! makes my heart sing. A month ago on September 15 th, Layla and I achieved what I once thought was only a dream: Layla finished her MACH with 2 QQ s in a row at FRAAD s agility trial. Layla s perfect weekend was such a treat. Interestingly, Layla s first perfect weekend in masters was exactly a year before her MACH! I want to thank the Colorado agility community for all of their support. Fantastic friends and excellent training advice has kept us improving and going strong. Layla also qualified for the AKC Agility National Championship at MHGRC s specialty in August. We have having fun playing our favorite game for the remainder of the year before we get down to business again in the new year. I cannot thank Layla enough for being such an understanding and talented teammate. Love this girl more than words can describe! Emily Russell

10 MACH2 Flyway's Capt'n BJ Hunnicutt CD RE MXS MJS XF NAP NJP 7/18/2005-9/27/2013 Very recently, we had to say goodbye to our boy, BJ Hunnicutt, a treasured member of TEAM M*A*S*H. BJ was our first MACH dog and was handled by Larry Janowiak. Larry also handled him to his MACH2. He was an over-the-top energizer boy who did everything with style. I had the privilege of handling him to his CD and RE. He always found a way to do something goofy in the ring and still qualify. His half-brother was Radar. Both boys were totally unforgettable! Larry and BJ qualified for Nationals in 2012 and They went to Reno in 2012 and qualified in 3/4 runs. He was playful, he was gentle, he was a good friend and companion. We will always miss you, BJ. Have fun playing with Radar. Michele Janowiak
