UNDERLYING THESE AIMS IS THE DESIRE TO SERVE THE INTERESTS OF: GAME CONSERVATION BY USING WELL TRAINED, RELIABLE HUNTING DOGS BEFORE AND AFTER THE SHOT; PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS BY DISCOURAGING NONSELECTIVE AND UNCONTROLLED BREEDING WHICH PRODUCES UNWANTED AND UNCARED FOR DOGS; AND THE GUN DOG HUNTER BY HELPING THE HUNTER TO TRAIN HIS DOG TO WORK BEFORE AND AFTER THE SHOT, ON LAND AND IN THE AIR. FORMED IN 1969, NAVHDA HAS HELPED THOUSANDS OF OWNERS OF VERSATILE HUNTING DOGS TO TRAIN THEIR OWN DOGS TO BECOME USEFUL HUNTING COMPANIONS. FURTHERMORE, THE NAVHDA REGISTRY IS THE ONLY REGISTRY IN NORTH AMERICA SPECIALIZING IN THE REGISTRATION OF VERSATILE HUNTING DOG BREEDS. THE NAVHDA TEST INFORMATION SERVICE KEEPS AND PROVIDES TO BREEDERS, BUYERS AND INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS THE PERFORMANCE RECORDS OF ALL THE VERSATILE HUNTING DOGS TESTED IN THE NAVHDA SYSTEM. NAVHDA INTERNATIONAL IS THE GOVERNING BODY FOR THE NAVHDA ORGANIZATION AND INCLUDES APPROXIMATELY 70 LOCAL CHAPTERS ACROSS THE U.S. AND IN CANADA. JULY 23, 2012 DEAR NAVHDA MEMBERS, 59 DAYS - THAT S ALL WE HAVE LEFT BEFORE WE START THE 2012 NAVHDA INVITATIONAL. WE NEED YOUR HELP. NAVHDA has always relied on volunteers to promote and support our organization. As you all understand the importance of having enough workers for conducting chapter tests, it is even more critical at the Invitational. Due to the number of dogs and multiple rotations it is a very complex test to orchestrate, requiring many, many workers each day. If you look at the web site you will see that we are short on workers, especially on Thursday. I m asking you if you could come out to this year s Invitational and find a way to work for one day. 4 MID-OHIO NAVHDA Training tips: Ron Behnke: some of his points for a retrieve... It's critical for us as the owner, handler, trainer to do our job of handling the retrieve so that our dogs do not develop bad habits. Most of the time if our dogs have developed bad retrieving habits they can be corrected by us doing our part correctly. Things not to do when our dogs are retrieving: 1. Never reach for the retrieved object. Our dogs don't bring objects to us for us to take them away. They bring objects to us for praise. 2. Never take the retrieved object without giving adequate time to praise our dog. 3. Don't do too many retrieves. Boredom of any drill leads to bad habits. 4. Don't make the retrieves boring. 5. Don't verbally repeat yourself over and over trying to get the dog to perform it's retrieve. Things to do when our dogs are retrieving: 1. Once your dog picks up the retrieving object call them once then manipulate them to you by running away, kneeling down, using a check cord (whatever works). Once the dog is to you it's imperative that you take the time to pet them and stroke them (do not excite them). Let them know that they did a great job of coming to you and that you're not going to take away the object as soon as they get to you. 2. Praise only while the dog is holding the object. Once your dog drops the object all petting stops. You might even place the object back in their mouth and then continue the praise. 3. Mix it up. Throw different retrieving objects, into different covers, 4]

5 terrains, fields, waters, over hills, different distances, at night time, etc. to keep your dog from getting bored. 4. A high strung energetic dog must be restrained while give it long soothing strokes along it's sides. A more timid, less confident dog should be stroked on it's undersides (chin, belly, tail) to build its confidence. 5. Above all, read your dog, stop the retrieving drills as soon as your dog starts slowing down. Be prepared to run away as soon as your dog starts a slower or indirect recall. Kneel down as soon as you see any signs of timidness. 5]

6 From Matt: Podcast given by a veterinarian on conditioning for hunting dogs. Red Bull Pheasant FROM OUR OWN JACKIE COOPER!!! After searching for good easy recipes for pheasant, I found this one, and hardly cook pheasant any other way. Put your cleaned pheasant in a brine: There are many variations of brine; I change it up all the time; use your own favorite. I soak it for about 6 hours or overnight, then drain, pat dry, and transfer it to a pan (I use the oven broiler pan with the raised perforated section that acts as a drain) so it will drain & dry out. Put in the refrigerator uncovered, all day, ready to cook that evening. BRINE: 8 cups water 1/4 cup kosher salt 1 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup real maple syrup 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, smashed (the recipe says "several" garlic cloves; I tend to use about 3) 1 pinch ground cloves 1/2 lemon, juice of (I do use it) (optional) 1 dash cayenne pepper (optional) 1 (2 lb) whole pheasants 2 tablespoons butter Fire up the grill to 450 degrees. Oil the bird, add salt & pepper and thyme. Ok- have you ever cooked BEER CAN CHICKEN where you place a chicken on top of a ½ full beer can (insert beer can in cavity)? This is the same only you use RED BULL cans emptied & washed out and filled ½ way with beer. They fit into the cavity of a pheasant PERFECTLY. Place the bird on the can so it s legs make it like a tripod. I wedge my birds in a medium soup pot to keep them upright while I am working on the other birds and to transport them to the grill. See picture of the BAD DOG looking at my birds! Turn off one side of the grill or the middle burners. Bottom line you will cook the birds on indirect heat for minutes with a closed lid. Using a super-sized set of tongs, transfer back to the pan to carry indoors. Using potholders, I grab the red bull can & pull out. Careful HOT! I wait 10 minutes before cutting into the bird it will be juicy and the skin will be crisp! This recipe is a little unwieldy the first time and sometimes the cans tip over on the grill, but after the 2 nd or 3 rd time you ll have the process figured out. Cook rice on the side, cut the birds in half and serve each person ½ bird. Just pick up the bird & eat! 6]
