AUGUST 2011 MID-OHIO NAVHDA ISSUE NUMBER 8 MID-OHIO/COLUMBUS CHAPTER OF NAVHDA (NORTH AMERICAN VERSATILE HUNTING DOG ASSOCIATION NAVHDA 2011 INVITATIONAL Meals Memo Just a message to all handlers, volunteers and spectators planning on attending this year s Invitational. In an attempt to get a better handle on the nightly meals, all dinners must be pre-ordered prior to the event. All ordering information and pricing along with each night s menu is posted on the Invitational website page under the 2011 Details tab. Please note meal order forms must be received no later than September 1, Lunches will be made available daily on a walk up basis. Thanks to each and every one of you who are planning on attending and helping make this year s event a successful one. Sincerely, Invitational Committee Volunteering For the 2011 Invitational As the 2011 Invitational Volunteer Coordinator I would personal like to invite you to the Invitational which will be held in Ohio this Year. You could have front row seats to NAVHDA s flag ship test. If you have never experienced this event it is a great way to see it. There are many jobs that need to be done every day. If you think that some day that you will be running in the Invitational this is will give you first hand experience which will be invaluable. Whether you are handling a dog, or coming as a spectator, working at the Invitational is not only a fun and productive way to see great dog work, it is an continued on page 2 MID OHIO CHAPTER OFFICERS BILL REVERCOMB 78 Spring Street Newark, Ohio MATT KREJCI 8462 Invergordon Court Dublin, Ohio matthewkrejci@hotmail.com rrbrev@roadrunner.com president RON BEHNKE 7362 Twp.Rd. 150 West Liberty, Ohio binks@embarqmail.com training coordinator treasurer BARRY SPRAGUE 2778 Banner Lane Columbus, Ohio barrysprague@sbcglobal.com vice president ANDREW HOPKINS 2821 Greeley Court Lewis Center, Ohio andrew_w_hopkins@yahoo.com test secretary HEATHER HAUSER 2861 Wellesley Drive Columbus, Ohio hashauser9@hotmail.com publications/website
outstanding way to learn more about this test. The Invitational is an International event, which means each of us plays a part in its success. This test requires 40 workers per day. Workers need to be on the grounds by 6:30 every morning to meet with their site marshal. Here is the link for more information and to volunteer. Thank you. Timothy Clark 2011 Invitational Volunteer Coordinator If you can help, I would appreciate it! Get your bird orders in to Jeff. My order is in for this project. Hope you call Jeff soon. Thanks, hh THE 2011 NAVHDA INVITATIONAL IS SEPTEMBER NEAR BLOOMINGDALE, OHIO AT MINGO SPORTSMAN CLUB ***TRAINING DAY FOR MID-OHIO IN AUGUST...NEED VOLUNTEERS!!! If you recall, a few months ago I sent out an regarding a project for NAVHDA, in particular, David Norquist s project for NAVHDA. David produced the YouTube and NAVHDA s marketing video describing the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association. David is now producing a video describing the Natural Ability part of the testing program and has asked me to provide the photographs for the video and that it follow a woman handler rather than using photographs from previous tests, etc. Jackie Cooper with Rally volunteered and Dwight will be assisting too, but more as a model for a judge or gunner. But I need more volunteers to pose as judges and a gunner (blank gun for gun shy testing). I will need some judges forms (Andrew). I was thinking there would be a need for uniformity in shirts for the judge models, but I guess not. Since this will be somewhat of a chapter effort, I was hoping to get as many members at this Saturday s training day as possible to do a group shot of the membership. I would also like to take the opportunity to photograph as many members with their dogs as possible for inclusion in our newsletters. This is somewhat secondary to the primary purpose of getting the NA scenario documented. I am hoping for a rainless day, but it will go on no matter rain or shine since work schedules and life seem to keep interfering!
LITTERS LITTER OF RON BEHNKE S ASPEN TO DROP ASPEN COOPER This is a line breeding of two awesome dogs that compliment each other. Their pedigrees are packed full of VC and KS titles. The IC in this breeding is and the most common dogs in this breeding are VC Gilly vom Berland, KS Kristan vom Pottsiepen, and Hillhavens Hustler. The puppies due date is June 29th. Aspen s registered name is Dreampoint's Aspen and she is a NA prize 1, 112 points and a UT prize 2, 200 points. Her parents are Behnke vom Bergland (Skeet) My website is for more information, or I can be reached by phone at (937) or by at either 4binks@embarqmail.com or dreampoint@embarqmail.com UT prize 1 and Aeress vom Stillwater UT prize 2. As you know she's an amazing dog with a lot of prey drive and extremely cooperative. The sire to this litter is Cooper vom Stillwater (Cooper), he is a NA prize 1, and a UT prize 2 young male. His parents are VC Sundance Revelation MH and VC Gilly vom Bergland. Anyone that has seen Cooper in action say the same thing, that Cooper's "the real deal"...to be continued... Male Weimaraner born trained at hunt clubs in Medina, Ohio. Loves birds and retrieving. Mike Schumaker s Otto placed 3rd at the Weimaraner Nationals last month (May)!!!
MORE Puppies whelped on June 28, 2011 PHOTOS Puppies were pretty much whelped on the anticipated date of June 29th. I remember Ron saying he thought the tie-up took or maybe Aspen ate a whole watermelon without anyone s knowledge. Guess it took well! Congratulations to Ron and Libby...and Aspen. Fourteen hours of labor on top of all the other labor hours is a lot for everyone. I hope and I m sure we will all be lucky enough to see the pups at training day. NUMBERS FEMALES 7 My website is for more information, or I can be reached by phone at (937) or by at either 4binks@embarqmail.com or dreampoint@embarqmail.com I believe some are spoken for, but not all. Please pass on the litter s information or our chapter s website where the litter is posted to anyone with an interest. MALES 4 HOURS OF LABOR 14
Health of Our Dogs Dog Watch November 2010 Foods That Are Dangerous to Dogs Even in small amounts, certain foods can spell serious trouble for your dog. It s important to know what to avoid. IN MEMORIAL Lumberjack with Heather just days before his death...i know there are many others of you that have lost a companion. If so, send me a picture and a little information so that we may honor them. Raisins and grapes induce kidney failure. Don t worry about one grape or raisin, but the cause for concern would be if the dog ingested an entire box. Raisins and grapes are an example of a species-specific problem. If not caught in the early stages, kidney failure can be fatal. Dr. Wakshlag does not recommend giving your dog turkey or ham bones. They can induce gastritis and perforate the small intestine. Beware a Change in Diet Any change in diet can lead to gastrointestinal problems. Fatty foods can have repercussions down the line for our dogs and lead to heart disease and an overloaded pancreas. Chocolate and dogs don t mix. Actually, the real culprit is dark or baking chocolate, because it is rich in cocoa. However, the amount of Ron Behnke with Skeet at the 2007 NAVHDA Invitational true chocolate in milk chocolate is small. It takes 10 ounces of milk chocolate but only one ounce of dark chocolate to be a serious problem in a 10 pound dog. Macadamia nuts can cause fever, tremors, diarrhea, stomach upset and neurological symptoms. Within 24 hours, dogs will be dragging their back legs and pulling themselves around. Although it looks like a spinal cord injury, these dogs return to normal within three days. This situation never calls for euthanasia! Other foods to avoid include avocado, which can cause heart damage, and onions, which can damage red blood cells. Gum, EASY OREO TRUFFLES Easy OREO Truffles 1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened 1 pkg. (8 oz.) OREO Cookies, finly crushed (about 4 ¼ cups), divided 2 pkg. (8 squares each) BAKER S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted Mix cream cheese and 3 cups cookie crumbs until well blended. Shape into 48 (1 inch) balls. Dip in melted chocolate; place on waxed paper-covered baking sheet. Sprinkle with remaining cookie crumbs. Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm. Store in tightly covered container in refrigerator.
candies and baked goods sweetened with xylitol can cause a severe and rapid drop in blood sugar. If xylitol is listed as one of the first three ingredients on a label, don t offer the product to a dog. It only takes a couple of pieces of chewing gum to make a dog very sick or cause him to develop liver failure. The most dangerous items a dog can get a hold of are human medications. To take the guesswork out of what is a safe treat by going to the ASPCA website and visiting the page Make Your Pet s Home Poison Safe, where you can print out a comprehensive list of treats to avoid. Their website is: If your dog does ingest a toxic substance, call the Animal Poison Control Center ( ). They ll take a detailed history, ask about the symptoms and direct you to an emergency veterinarian if you don t already have one. Your Dog magazine December 2010 At present, there s no known prevention for CCL ruptures and no means for early identification of at-risk dogs. There s no proven way to actually repair cruciate ligaments and no way of identifying the dogs who will do better with a particular surgical treatment. Researchers, however, hope to change all that as scientific studies shed light on the syndrome. For now, the success of all three techniques (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy, Tibial Tuberosity Advancement, and lateral suture technique) is considered good-to-excellent, and the earlier surgery is done, the better. Recovery is individual, but dogs usually return to normal use of the knee after two-to-six months. Training Tips This article is Hunting Dog Ingredients by Joe Schmutz. There are three motivations for a dog to respond when sent to retrieve a bird. First, there is obedience then desire and lastly cooperation.
As evidenced in the above diagram, desire predominates on the way out; cooperation predominates on the way in. Close to the handler and feeling influenced by her or him, obedience predominates. Away from the handler, desire and cooperation carry the day. A good dog trainer will make use of dog sense and negotiate this confluence of desire, cooperation, and obedience very carefully. A dog that has come to trust its owner, and one that has a fine balance between desire and cooperation, and the mental stability to become obedient later, often does not fully know when it is being trained. Dog breeders believe in breeding the best to the best. Some consider desire the important currency, some think it s obedience, and we can find trials for each. In all of the many different types of versatile dog tests, there is an emphasis on the third dimension: cooperation. The distinguishing trait of a versatile dog is not only to be able to do more tasks, but to shift from one task to another repeatedly and without delay, as a hunting situation demands it. That requires cooperation. The ability to respond to training may be heritable, but the non-slip delivery on a retrieve per se is the mark of the trainer, pure and simple. If a judge is not experienced or well-taught, the score given will reflect what the handler can do, not how naturally cooperative the dog may be. As a general rule and judging from the wolf-dog-puppy example, most things done close to the owner are primarily by obedience; those done for the owner, but also largely for the dog s own interests are desire; those done out of obedience range and in opposition to raw desire-like naturally bringing a bird-are cooperation. Dogs differ in the proportion of desire and cooperation, which they come by through a combination of upbringing and genes. A trainer would do well to know which type of dog he is dealing with.
