Their mother passed away when they were very young. Pak Mat remarried Mak Nora. Every day, Mak Nora ordered Rani and Amin to do all the housework. They were not allowed to eat if they did not finish all the housework. Sometimes, they had to starve until late evening. One night, Amin overheard Pak Mat and Mak Nora talking. Mak Nora told Pak Mat to take them to the forest. He must leave them there because there was no enough food for four of them. The next morning, Amin went out to collect some pebbles. When they followed Pak Mat to the forest, he threw the pebbles on the ground along the way. Pak Mat left them there and went home alone. Rani and Amin followed the pebbles to find the way home.
