10 Executive Manager s Report As I say every year, the October issue of the News is my favorite with its across-the-state show results including state fair, fall sale ads and, since it s an even year, the membership directory. Lots of color, lots of ads, and lots of information. As always, we loaded the trunk of my car with this issue to share with the visitors from around the world at our World Dairy Expo booth. If you are an Expo visitor and not familiar with our New York Holstein Association or our New York Holstein News, I ll give you a quick overview. We publish 11 times a year, circulation is just under 3,000 with magazines sent all over the US and many other countries. A subscription costs $25, advertising is very affordable, and ongoing announcements, updates of events, and articles for and about our membership and supporters are always included. A membership is $50 and we invite anyone anywhere to become a member. With a membership, you receive the News plus all the mailings that keep you informed of events and opportunities for members. Our mission statement is to promote the Holstein breed for the economic and social benefit of our junior and senior members. I review this statement often as our Board of Directors, staff and I work diligently to give every member the most benefit from their membership dollar possible. We would welcome your membership and participation wholeheartedly. We have lots of activities throughout the year. News Editor Mike McCaffrey and I will be in the booth all week and would enjoy talking with you about our great New York Holsteins and their owners. Special highlight of this issue is our New York Holstein Harvest Sale held at Cornell and hosted with the Cornell Dairy Club (CUDS). Featured are some of the highest genomics, most prolific, deep pedigreed and famous cow families, reds and red-polled, fancy show prospects and more. As Mike highlighted on page 5, the success stories about Harvest purchases is a very long list. As advertised, the junior raffle calf will be sold at the Harvest Sale. The winner chose the $500 instead of the calf, so Co-Vale Miss Ashley-ET is still available. The only difference is that, at the sale, there s nothing left to chance. Bid last and own this beautiful, deep pedigreed calf. If you are not on our regular mailing list and would like to receive a catalog, just call the Cattle Exchange ( ). If you have interest in any consignment, call any member of the sales staff with any questions. Either Dave Rama or I have seen most of the consignments and often other members of the cow family at the farm. The animals match their terrific pedigrees. Please join us on October 23 for this exciting wrap up sale of the year. October starts our membership drive and your packet will be in the mail soon. As always, a November 30 postmark gets your club a $1 rebate and insures that you continue to get the best possible rate with Holstein USA when registering calves. That s easy money for your club and a healthy savings for you throughout the year along with our activities and events held for your benefit. October is also the month for All-New York entries, junior contest entries, Distinguished Junior Member books, Futurity entries, and nominations for Master Breeder, Retired Master Breeder and Outstanding Young Breeder. Forms can be found on our website or we re happy to send them to you if you give us a call. We love to give junior and senior members their deserved recognition, but we can t do it without the necessary paperwork. Please encourage juniors to fill out the forms for DJM and other awards. Nominate deserving senior members from your area for the three master breeder recognitions. Also look through the calf crop and get the favorites nominated for Futurity #36. This year s winner took home more than $500 and everybody got more than $300. And it s fun to wager a little for the three nominations as calf, heifer and fresh heifer to see who rises to the top. In case you are not aware, the News is now online and we hope you enjoy this added convenience. Our bus trip to New England is right around the corner. We may still have a seat or two available. If the corn s all chopped and you can spare the time, give Ed Tyler a call ( ) and jump on board. A good time with fun people is guaranteed. If you re from out of state or out of country, we would welcome your visit to New York. We are very proud of our New York Holsteins and our members. We can easily put a tour together for you in any area of the state and include some non-farm spots of interest, too. If you d like to join us for one of our activities, our All Breeds Convention is January with the seniors first on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning and the juniors Saturday morning through Monday (Martin Luther King Day). This year it will be held in Utica and includes our ET Sale, necessary meetings, annual banquet and lots of midwinter fun and socialization. If January s not your preferred month of travel, our Spring Dairy Carousel in April might suit you better. We host four days of all breed shows and sales, junior activities and again a ton of fun, cow talk and great cattle from all over the country to what we can proudly and honestly call the Premier Spring Dairy Event in the U.S. It s held at the state fairgrounds in Syracuse and we can t guarantee the weather in New York in April, but we can guarantee a great time for anyone who loves the good dairy cow. After a long hot summer with its bumper crop, I hope you are enjoying the crisp fall air, beautiful leaves and maybe even a little trick or treating. Take care and keep in touch.

11 A picture paints a thousand words, the lyrics of a famous song reminds us, and as you can see from Deb s recent photo above, this is indeed true. This correct and balanced June heifer has great depth, a massive frame and tremendous spring of rib. Like her ancestors before her, she should develop into a heck of a dairy cow with both impressive type and superior production. Her family is the incomparable Delia family. Her dam is an Encore daughter with tremendous size, Indianhead Encore Delight (2E-91) with 34,970 pounds of milk and 1206 fat and lifetime 187,070 pounds and 6548 fat. Deb s Grand dam is Creek Aeroline Dream-ET (VG-88) with 37,080 pounds and 1312 fat, third dam is Creek RC Matt Dorita-ET (VG-86) with a whopping 45,140 and 1486 fat, and her fourth dam is Regancrest Leadman Doris-ET (EX-92) with 35,590 and 1996 fat. Next is Snow-N Denises Delia (2E-95 GMD-DOM) with 32 EX offspring & the dam of Durham and Dundee, followed by Dorys Denise (2E-90 GMD-DOM) with 33,350 and 1256 fat. Deb has been shown successfully this year and she is bred to sexed Planet semen for another fancy June show calf. She was bred by Edward Crossland, Savage, MD. 12 you to all of you who sold tickets. Thank you also to Brad Cates of Co-Vale Holsteins for donating an awesome calf that allowed for a very successful fundraiser. Happy October everyone I hope to see many of you on the 23rd for the Harvest Sale and best of luck with your convention preparations! Hello everyone! I hope you all are enjoying the fall season, and have gotten settled into the school year on the right foot. Even though summer was busy, these autumn days are just as full of events and things to do. There are many Holstein Association events happening this month, and convention is fast approaching! Multiple county Holstein clubs are hosting cattle sales in October. Best of luck to the Allegany-Steuben, O-H-M, and ENY clubs on these sales keep working hard and we wish you a successful sale day! I hope many of you can make the drive with your families to these sales and will support your fellow Jr. members by investing in a show animal for next season. I would also like to invite you all to the 2010 NY Holstein Harvest Sale at Cornell University on October 23rd. I, along with many other New York Holstein Juniors, will be working as a member of the Cornell University Dairy Science Club to present a great sale. We hope that many of you and your families will make the drive to Ithaca to see our campus and get to know Cornell, catch up with the Juniors who are working the sale, and to invest in a promising addition to your herd or show string. I know this will not directly affect any Juniors, but if your parents graduated from Cornell please remind them about the 2010 Cornell University Dairy Science Alumni Reunion! The reunion will be held in conjunction with the NY Holstein Harvest Sale, and the current Dairy Science club is working hard with Roger Thomas to put on a fun event to celebrate our club s history. If anyone has any questions about the event, please contact Roger at nysmilks@aol.com. There may not be snow on the ground yet but convention will surely be here before you know it! This means that Distinguished Junior Member books are almost due, and all of you should be thinking about participating in Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, the speech contest, and other contests held at convention. The DJM book deadline is almost here, so be sure to keep working on those books and trust me do not leave everything until the last minute! If you would like any help or advice, feel free to contact our current DJMs or anyone on the committee. Abbey, Kenny, Katie Hanehan, Nathan, and myself all have a lot of experience with this contest and would be more than willing to lend a hand. And to wrap up my article I thought I would send a big shout out and a huge congratulations to all of you because we sold over $4,000 in calf raffle tickets this year! This is a huge increase from last year, and thank by Shannon Fletcher The Eastern New York Holstein Club held their annual Black & White Show July 31 and August 1, 2010 at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, NY. This year was the highest number of new junior members with a tally of 14. Let s keep that number growing! The Junior members recently competed at the Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck. Upcoming events include a judging meeting to be announced and plans are underway for this year s upcoming banquet and elections in November. THIS EPISODE I m such a fat cow. 14 The Holstein-Friesian Association of America reported that it was on a record pace for registrations for calendar year The Association had been setting records for several years, with the number of registrations likely to exceed 200,000 in the current year. The New York State Fair set a record for post-war exhibitions in North America, with 403 head checked into the open classes. All but seven head were from 70 Empire State exhibitors, with Prof. Gordon Cairns of the University of Maryland making the official placings. Mollie Dale Teake, the winning aged cow, went the distance as Senior & Grand Champion for Freebaer Farm, Fort Plain. Interestingly, the Champion was a Canadian cow that was brought to the U. S. by a cattle dealer and only by accident was discovered in a farmer s herd by Fred Baer, owner of Freebaer Farm, who took her home, fitted her for the shows, and brought her to Grand Champion recognition. Reserve Grand Champion went to Harden Farms with Hickoryvale Della Aaggie, the only member of the Harden Farms string that was not of their own breeding. A daughter of Curtiss Candy Della Lad, she won the 4-year-old class and was also first in the Best Udder class held the day before. In all, there were 65 bulls shown, 171 calves & heifers, and 167 cows with the largest class being the senior heifer calves with 59 entries. Professor Cairns also judged the Junior 4-H and F.F.A. Holstein Show in Syracuse and the event was the largest to date with 168 head shown. Named Grand Champion was Belle Cornell Dewdrop Abbekerk, first in the Four Years & Over Class for Jerry Coyne, Avon, and returning from an All-American award in Reserve Grand Champion was Waydell Katie, a 2-year-old exhibited by Robert Burns, Bovina. Dr. Lew Mix, Director of Research & Development for Agway, Inc., authored an article entitled New York Dairymen Face Hard Times. With the second 50- cent assessment per hundredweight going into effect September 1, Mix predicted that cost of production would exceed the milk price farmers received. One bill being considered was the Moynihan Bill, which would drop the support price $1.00 and provide a referendum of 15 cents per hundredweight for advertising and sales promotion. The chances of getting dairymen to pass such a referendum at this time are rather remote. The Dairy Compromise Bill HR 1875 with proposed adjustments in effective dates and a steady $12.60 support price is by far the best alternative the Congress will have to consider. The present $1.00 assessment would be repealed and a $10.00 per hundredweight direct payment would be made for a specific time period to those producers who cut production by at least five percent and not more than 30 percent. Mix continued by stating, The direct payment is essential if we are to get a reduction in cow numbers and milk production. New York Holstein exhibitors brought 361 of their top competitors before Judge Ray Kuehl, Waunakee, WI, at the New York State Fair in. Dreamstreet Holsteins had a big day, capturing both Senior Champions, five individual wins, and their fourth consecutive Premier Exhibitor banner. Millervale Ultimate Rosalynn paced the competition to win the 4-year-old class and be named Senior & Grand Champion. For Reserve, Kuehl looked to the winning senior 2-yearold, Howard-Home Valiant Eva. For Junior Champion, Kuehl chose Mik-Rob Star Jennifer, the winning senior calf exhibited by Rob Hart & Thomas Wallace and for Reserve, it was Lo-Pine Astro Camie, the blue-ribbon junior yearling bred & exhibited by Lo-Pine Farms, Millerton. RuAnn Holsteins, Avon, received $ for the winning futurity heifer, Cloverlands Straight Pine Macy, a Pete daughter bred by Cloverlands Farms, Willsboro. The 2nd Catskill Summer Classic averaged $5037 on an even 100 head, with Henry-Acres Jemini Jill- ET (GP-84) commanding the day s high price of $51,000. Consigned by Pen-Col Farms, Millville, PA, the Jemini daughter sold contracted to Browncroft Jetson. Odyssey Farm, Hillsdale, was the buyer. Perusing the buyers list, an interesting entry is Tyrbach Elevation Twinkie, an Elevation heifer consigned by George Morgan, Walton, that sold for $10,000 to Hugh & Ann Langmaid, St. Johnsbury, VT. Three successful sales took place August 22 with the 14th Wintercrest Invitational averaging $2528, the Shady Lake Milking Herd Sale averaging $2900 on 12 head, and the 28th Empire Sale averaging $2061. Shady Lake RORAE Lexi (EX, 4y) commanded the high bid of $7000 from Hartman Farms, Dundee, IL. The young cow proved a wise investment as she was raised to EX-91 for her new owners later in the week. Michelle Main of Copake was on the halter of Berkshire Valley Ti Happy as she won the aged cow class and was later named Senior & Grand Champion of the New York State Fair Junior Show. Her closest competitor was Relay Elevation Sunbeam, an Elevation 4-yearold brought out by Christine Hait, Hobart. A very impressive 216 head

15 were paraded before Judge Lewis Porter. In the Judging Contest, Bret Benton, Troupsburg, was the winner, with the group from Delaware County winning the team competition. Diane Sutherland of Delhi was named Master Showman. Dennis Patrick, Woodbine, MD, placed the 350 head competing at the New York State Fair Holstein Show, with 1991 s All-American Junior 3-Year-Old, C Merkley Starbuck Whitney, returning in winning form to be named Senior & Grand Champion for Twin-Wind Holsteins & Tokachi Livestock Management, Bridgewater, CT & Obihiro, Japan. Garnering the Reserve title was the second-place 4-year-old, Sequa Citamatt Tracy-ET, shown by Gay Ridge Holsteins Kingstead Farms, the show s Premier Exhibitors. Sandy Crest Holsteins, Arn Prior, Ont., was the show s Premier Breeder. Timothy Perotti, Millerton, exhibited the Senior & Grand Champion at the New York State Fair Junior Show. Lo-Pine Simon Theresa, the winning aged cow, was followed by Carters-Dale Dominant Pat, the redribbon aged cow owned by Angela Ross. Charlene Yousey was named Master Showman in the showmanship competition, with Amy Galton winning Reserve honors. 16 A picture-perfect day, a well-prepared set of cattle, and exciting new GTPI numbers greeted prospective buyers at the All-Riehl Holsteins Complete Dispersal August 20 in Himrod. In his opening remarks, Ken Riehl spoke on behalf of his family in thanking the many people that had brought them to this day, including the farm s previous owner, Sam Stoltzfus, and the partners that he had owned cattle with in the last eight years. The All-Riehl herd was an interestingly-bred group, with outcross pedigrees and several high genomics individuals offered with attractive A.I. contracts and considerable future interest. One of the youngest females in the line-up landed at the top of the buyers list, JK-Gold Dorcy Pastry-ET. This May 2010 calf is the number one Coyne-Farms Dorcy-ET daughter in the breed at GTPI and carrying an $8500 contract to Genex. Her dam, a VG-85 Toystory daughter that sold for $6200 in her own right, was backed by five generations of EX GMD-DOM, 30,000-lb. cows. Spirited bidding ended with the TAW Partnership, Dryden, NY, giving the final nod at $20,000. At $14,500, Oakfield Corners Dairy, Oakfield, NY, took UFM-Dubs Elemire-ET, a Vieuxsaule Malicieux- ET daughter of UFM-Dubs Eowyn-ET (VG-87), the extensively-contracted Braedale Goldwyn daughter that completes six generations of VG or EX cows. The heifer in her own right carried a $7000 contract to Genex. Oakfield Corners Dairy selected several of the other high-genomic offerings, including All-Riehl Leif Glitter-ET, a Lief daughter also contracted to Genex that sold for $9500. Her VG-86 Shottle dam was contracted for seven sons and completes 11 generations of VG or EX cows. Also heading to Oakfield Corners was first choice Garrett female from All-Riehl Toystory Pippi-ET (VG-86), a Toystory daughter from the premier cow family at All-Riehl, tracing back four generations to Brookburn Rudolph Pansy-ET (3E-93 DOM), nominated Holstein International Cow of the Year in Pippi herself was also in A.I. demand and sold for $7200 to Dale Niswander, St. Thomas, PA. Also at $9500 was All-Riehl Planet Phenice-ET, a Planet daughter with GTPI from a GP-82 Ramos with GTPI and eight generations of VG or EX behind her. With several A.I. organizations interested in future offspring, Louis Prange, Sexing Technologies, Sheboygan Falls, WI, placed the final bid. The Cattle Exchange, Delhi, managed the very successful event, with Dave Rama handling the selling duties and Horace Backus detailing the pedigrees. Accepting bids from the large crowd were Rick Verbeek, Tom Harkenrider, Lloyd Simon, Don Welk, Jason Pullis, and Patsy Gifford. Merry Rama and Amber Newman handled the clerking duties. Final tallies showed the 103 full lots averaged an impressive $2764. Several embryo lots were also very well received with embryos selling for up to $1000 apiece. A partial buyers list follows. 17 New York junior members did the Empire State proud as they presented 114 of their best Holsteins on August 28, 2010, before Judge Jack Lomeo, Lowville, NY. Included were 89 junior animals and 25 senior animals, all vying for honors after being among the summer s strongest competitors on the local level. Parading around the ring were many familiar tanbark campaigners including several past Junior All- New York and Junior All-American nominees. In contention for Junior Champion were the first and secondplace winners from each of the calf and heifer classes, and it was indeed an impressive sight as they paraded the ring. Lomeo singled out four individuals as his strongest candidates the winning spring calf, spring yearling, and his first and second fall yearlings. These are the kind of heifers that will go the farthest when shown again, Lomeo reasoned after praising those in the ring. For his Junior Champion, he nodded to Jared Dueppengiesser, Perry, NY, on the halter of OCD Aspen Midnight Rain- ET, the blue-ribbon fall yearling that Lomeo cited for her massive, open frame and tremendous depth of rib. The EK-Oseeana Aspen- ET daughter is no stranger to the winners circle, having been the All-New York, Junior All-New York, and High Honorable Mention Junior All-American Fall Calf in For his Reserve, Lomeo conceded that it was a close placing, but tapped his winning spring calf, Roll-N-View Alex Bristol, the best bred & owned individual under 2 years of age exhibited by Cooper Galton, Nunda, NY. The Reserve Junior Champion, a tall, long, sleek calf that tracks on a beautiful set of feet and legs is sired by Golden-Oaks St Alexander- ET. In the cow classes, while numbers trailed the calf and heifer classes, quality did not. Lomeo was generous in his praise of his first and second-place senior 3-yearolds, both recently fresh and in their wedding clothes as Lomeo stated. Taking the Senior & Grand Champion rosette was Gen-I-Beq Goldwyn Saby, a beautifullyuddered, angular Braedale Goldwyn daughter, returning from All-New York and Junior All-New York honors in 2009 for Samantha Smithgall, Perry, NY. Next to her in class and in the Champion circle was Spring-Fed Logan Lea, the red-ribbon senior 3-year-old, so impressive with her massive, open frame. The Honorable Mention Junior All-New York Senior 2-Year- Old in 2009, she is owned by Trevor Holdridge, Bloomville, NY. Elm-Spring Aspen Aurora, exhibited by Andrew Tudor, Eagle Bridge, NY, was awarded Best Bred & Owned Over 2 Years. She was also part of the winning senior county herd from Washington County that included the first-place 5-year-old cow. For Junior County Herd, it was Wyoming County emerging on top with their impressive group, anchored by the Junior Champion.

21 It is a show that continues to grow in size, quality, and popularity. The Red & White Holstein Show on August 29 at the New York State Fair drew a large ringside crowd to watch Judge Chris Kimball make the official placings. In contention for Junior Champion honors were the winning spring calf, fall calf, and winter yearling, three beautiful individuals praised by the judge in class as well as in his Champion reasons. To wear the rosette, Kimball selected the spring calf, Criter-Ridge Rihana- Red-ET, noting the only thing I would change about this calf is that she would be living in Windham, Maine! So stylish and correct, the Patience Showline Contender daughter was exhibited by Maple-Downs Farms II, Cybil Fisher, Patty Jones, and David Packard. For his Reserve, Kimball followed with a very similarly-made individual, the winning fall calf shown by Cooper Galton. Gretz Jet Sarah-Red-ET, a daughter of Fradon Jet-Red, was lauded for her beautiful frame and deep, open rib. Quality, good-uddered cows sorted themselves to the top in each of the cow classes and Judge Kimball pulled three individuals in contention for Senior Champion honors. He praised the junior 2-year-old for her beautiful frame and mammary system, the first-place 4-year-old for her quality and balance throughout, coupled with a welded-on udder, and the recently-fresh 5-year-old that tracked on a terrific set of feet and legs. If this doesn t get you excited about milking cows, I don t know what will, Kimball concluded before tapping Alicia Lamb s first-place 4-year-old, Greenlea Talent Lee- Red-ET, as Senior and eventual Grand Champion. This lovely, angular, open individual sporting a spectacular udder was followed by Ridgedale s blue-ribbon 5-yearold, Ridgedale Raichu-Red-ET, a familiar campaigner in Red & White circles and off and running again this year. Ziems Farms, Barbara Ziemba, Cato, was named the show s Premier Exhibitor, while Clyde Sammons of Stoncree Farm, Johnstown, took home the Premier Breeder banner.

22 Numbers were up significantly from a year ago and the quality of entries was outstanding, as the New York State Show season reached its high point in Syracuse on August 30. A total of 226 entries paraded before Judge John Buckley who graciously filled in for Gerald Coughlin who was originally slated to officiate. Those competing on show day have vied for honors at this year s Spring Dairy Carousel, county and local shows and fairs, and regional exhibitions. The large crowd at ringside and seated in the stands was treated to strong, competitive classes as the best of the Empire State went head to head. Among those shown were some of New York s most successful show campaigners, with All-New York, Junior All-New York, All- American, and Junior All-American Contest alumnae returning for this competition and likely, National contests throughout the fall. While ribbons and awards were widely distributed, some breeders and owners could claim it a great day by gathering more than one prize. Brad Cates, Co-Vale Holsteins, Preble, was awarded both Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners. The Co-Vale prefix was on four individual class winners as well as the first and second Junior Best Three groups. In addition, Sarah Cates owns one class winner and the eventual Reserve Grand Champion. Co-Vale also shares ownership in another class winner, bred two of the second-place finishers, and shares ownership in another. Elmvue Farms, Johnstown, shares ownership in the Grand Champion and two second-place individuals, while Joleanna Holsteins, LLC, Unadilla, won three classes and had one second-place winner as well. The Lloyd family at Maple- Downs Farms II had one individual class winner and shared ownership in another as well two seconds. Ridgedale Farm, Sharon Springs, and Denise Dickinson, Hudson Falls, had a first and second place winner as well, with the Dickinson 125,000 lb. cow named Best Bred & Owned over 2 Years. Of particular note is how well New York Junior members did in the open classes, with Cooper Galton, Andrew Chlus, Paige Morrill, Chelsie Ross, Jared Dueppengiesser, Gregory Lloyd, and Anthony Liddle each owning a winner! Two bulls sired more than one class winner. Wilcoxview Jasper- ET was the sire of three winners in the heifer classes, while Braedale Goldwyn sired the Grand Champion as well as one other first-place cow. For consideration of Junior Champion, Judge Buckley got another look at each of the first and second-place finishers from the calf and heifer classes, and it was a magnificent sight of dairy, openribbed individuals, overflowing with style and breed character. I really appreciate the owners work in presenting these individuals. They are a great bunch of heifers, Buckley began in his reasons. Singling out the first-place summer yearling and the first place fall calf, the judge stated, These two heifers are really on the money today, and the crowd agreed with its applause. For Junior Champion, Buckley nodded to Co-Vale Jasper Kelcy 3378, the Wilcoxview Jasper- ET daughter exhibited by Brad Cates, Co-Vale Holsteins. Calling her crispy, tall, long, and dairy, Buckley liked the heifer more through her rump structure than the very fancy winning fall calf, Co-Vale Dolman Poppy-ET, a Regancrest Elton Dolman-ET daughter exhibited by Andrew Chlus, Little Falls. The fall calf had been praised in class for her tremendous length and drop to the fore rib and made a fitting Reserve Junior Champion. The Junior Champion was also Best Bred & Owned individual under 2 years of age. Among the Junior-exhibited individuals, Buckley again congratulated the youth on the quality of the animals they presented, but was especially taken with Cooper Galton s Roll-N-View Alex Bristol, the winning spring calf

23 from the largest class of the day. Sired by Golden-Oaks St Alexander- ET, the March 4th calf has had a very successful summer in the ring throughout the state and had been Reserve Junior Champion at the State Fair Youth Show just two days prior. She was nicely followed by the first-place winter heifer calf (second in open class) exhibited by Kelly Lee. Very similarly made, Co-Vale Dundee Kira-ET is from a family that has consistently produced show winners in the past several years. Following the Junior Best Three Females class, the New York Holstein Association s Futurity #34 was held. Though numbers were smaller than anticipated, the individuals presented to Buckley were superb. Joleanna Holsteins received $537 for their first-place winner, Joleanna Toby After The Rain sired by Browndale Toby. Now fresh with a magnificent udder, she is no stranger to show ring fans, as she was Junior Champion at the 2009 New York State Fair, the All-New York winner, and also nominated All-American last year. In second place among the futurity class was Ovaltop Fortune Nutty, a To-Mar D-Fortune-ET bred and owned by Michael Wolfe, Ovaltop Holsteins, Richfield Springs. The winner had the advantage in size and scale over the red-ribbon heifer, also sporting a spectacular udder. In third was another Ovaltop entry, this time for Douglas Wolfe with Ovaltop Velvet Twinkle. In fourth was L-V-R Goldwyn Robin, a Braedale Goldwyn daughter bred by Devlyn Hurley, Marion, and exhibited by Jacob Dueppengiesser, Perry. The NYHA and Futurity Committee would like to thank Blue Seal Richer Dairy Nutrition, Cargill Animal Nutrition, Pennfield Animal Feed Technologies, Pohl s Feedway, and Shur-Gain USA for their sponsorship of $100 each which helped the futurity purse surpass $1600. Judge Buckley had eight beautiful young cows in contention for Intermediate Champion recognition, but chose his first and second-place senior 3-year-olds to wear the rosettes. This group is a bit overwhelming, but I am choosing these two senior 3-year-olds, he said. They were tremendous cows in that class and this pair has got to stay together. Named Intermediate Champion was Circle-F Terrason Wonderful, the first-place Innwood Terrason daughter exhibited by Sarah Cates, Co-Vale Holsteins, Preble. So tall, so long, so dairy, and carrying a well-attached udder, the recently-fresh winner was followed by Gen-I-Beq Goldwyn Saby, the entry of Samantha Smithgall, Perry. The Braedale Goldwyn daughter was the winning senior 2-year-old at the 2009 State Fair and was fresh off a Grand Champion win at the Youth Show on Saturday. The eight older cows assembled for Senior Champion were an incredible gathering, and by their applause, it was clear that the crowd concurred with Buckley in his choice of Spierdyke Madame Wyn, the first-place 4-year-old and Best Udder winner for Elmvue Farm and Brad & Cindy Murphy. Quality from end to end, dairy, and tracking on a beautiful set of feet and legs, Buckley commented, She has so much type, so much size and scale, and really spells milk. For his Reserve Senior Champion, it was the winning aged cow exhibited by R-John, Kelly Barbee, Michael Heath, and Maple-Downs Farms II that emerged victorious with Jy-Ro Durham Corien, a daughter of Regancrest Elton Durham-ET that was similarly-made to the Champion in her dairyness, good udder, and depth and openness of rib. Buckley wasted no time in his selection for Grand and Reserve Champion when he had the six winners in front of him. This has been a super show and I appreciate all the help today. I am not one for making speeches, he confessed before naming his Senior Champion as Grand Champion of the show and his Intermediate Champion as Reserve. Praising the cows for their similarity in angularity and up hill

24 run, the judge noted, I don t know about the next derby down the road, but these two cows will be in the race. Among the junior-exhibited cows, Buckley tapped Spring-Fed Logan Lea as his Intermediate Champion of the Junior Division, noting her maturity, openness of rib, and dairyness. Owned by Trevor Holdridge, she had been Reserve Grand Champion on Saturday in the Youth Show. For Reserve Intermediate Champion among the juniors, Buckley liked the first-place junior 2-year-old, Curr-Vale Encore Terra, bred & shown by Emma Currie, Tully. This beautiful Marcrest Encore daughter possessed the combination of style, balance, and good udder that Buckley emphasized throughout the cow classes. For Senior Champions in the Junior Division, Anthony Liddle took both the prizes with his winning 5-year-old and 4-yearold, respectively. Wales Allen Fame, winner in the open class, combined the dairyness, strength, and good udder to go the distance over the Liddle/Alex Kugler entry, Married- Well Tal Rachal-ET, a silky, black, good-uddered Ladino Park Talent- Imp-ET daughter. For Grand and Reserve Grand Champion, Buckley tapped the big 5-year-old and followed with the senior 3-year-old, both showing worlds of size, power, dairy strength, and well-attached mammary systems.

26 Letter to the Editor I was sad yesterday when the September 2010 issue of the New York Holstein News arrived on September 11 with the obituary of Harris Wilcox, auctioneer and business man who had died on July 17, This is a great loss for the older dairymen and women in the entire U.S.A. I emphasize older because the under 40 crowd would probably not have met Harris Wilcox or his son, Craig, or his grandsons personally. My first encounter with both men was at Attica High School in Spring I was a junior in high school. My award was Empire Farmer Degree for F.F.A. Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox and Mr. Craig Wilcox were seated across the table from my parents and me for the evening banquet and award ceremony. I really feel that Harris many interests brought out the true purpose of life. This death notice on pages 18 & 19 states that he spoke over 1200 times in 500 churches in 12 states over a 12-year period. We will miss you. Bill Forbes

40 Just off Rt. 67 between Amsterdam and Ballston Spa, the Arnold family has called their Arnoldhaven Farm home since 1912, and though many changes have taken place in that nearly 100 years, the commitment to agriculture and stewardship of their land and cattle has been unwavering. The immaculate farmstead, operated as a corporation by brothers Rick and Chuck Arnold and their families, is a stellar example of keeping a positive image of the dairy industry in front of the public. On Father s Day this past June, the Arnolds hosted Sundae on the Farm and Rick states that somewhere between 2000 and 3000 people attended! In addition, Rick and Cathy s daughter Stacy is the Saratoga County Dairy Princess this year and is actively promoting dairy products on a daily basis. Son Nathan, a student at Cobleskill, is a well-known fitter. Chuck s son Jason is on a farm in Central New York and son Preston is involved as much as possible. With a rolling herd average of 22, , a BAA of 107.6, and a classification breakdown of 10 EX, 28 VG, and 9 GP, it is obvious that the Arnoldhaven herd is an impressive one. Big, strong, good-uddered cows with wide, flat rumps fill stall after stall, and much of that is due to the use of aaa, something that Rick has done himself for many years. He is the first to state that he has very particular criteria when choosing bulls: first, he never pays over $30 for a unit of semen; second, he is always conscious of components. Those two things he learned from his dad, Woody Arnold, a very wellknown and respected breeder before Rick. And third, he looks at the cow family behind a bull. Presently, Rick is using a good deal of Calypso, Minister, Baccardi, and Airraid. In addition, he has a Roybrook Tempo son from the Hanover Hill Barb family that is doing a good job with his heifers. In the past, a Hu-Hill (Hudyncia) bred Gibson son was used, and a red son of Ridgedale Citation Feather (EX-95) left some outstanding daughters. Arnoldhaven Fox Kit (3E-93), one of the best, has five records over 1000 fat to 1579 fat! Cow after cow, the herd is tall and strong with correct feet and legs. This has been the pattern here for years, evidenced by the 56 Excellent cows bearing the Arnoldhaven prefix. Several older cows (some nearly teenagers) in the herd today are living proof that Rick is a great caretaker and that type and longevity are definitely related in this herd. A 9-year-old Leduc daughter owned by Nathan, Arnoldhaven Leduc Kassidy (2E- 91) has records to 1548 fat and her Skyfame daughter has 1345 fat. There are fine Roy and Dundee maternal sisters to Kassidy milking, the trio being out of a VG-88 Airliner. Park Aero Wade left two Excellent daughters here (and another at Rea Campbell s in Salem): Arnoldhaven Wade Gem is 2E-90 and has over 200,000M to date. Her Carisma daughter, Gloria (VG-85, 2y) is very promising. Arnoldhaven Wade Heart is EX-92 and has four records over 1000 fat. She is from the H family that dates back to 1961 and the Mayhome prefix of Homer Johnson. No visit to Arnoldhaven would be complete without seeing Arnoldhaven Adolph Glenda (EX- 92), the massive-framed, widerumpled Tri-Day Adolph daughter that was the winning 5-year-old at the 2009 Tri-County Holstein Show. A cow with her front end strength, capacity, and width is rarely seen, and Rick has great hopes for her in the future after she calves again. With a strong work ethic and a genuine love for their farm, Rick and Chuck Arnold continue a strong family tradition of agriculture in an area that has seen more than its share of development. Rick, who oversees the herd, is committed to making the next generation of his cattle better than the present, and is meticulous in how he will make that happen. Great feed, a simple feeding program of haylage, corn silage, and lots of baled hay, are the basis for great year-after-year production. Consciously choosing service sires with high components from good cow families, Rick Arnold is a breeder with a day-to-

41 day passion for his art. Time at Arnoldhaven is indeed a terrific visit and a conversation with a great cow man like Rick Arnold reminds all of us why we love our registered Holsteins. I picked up my tour guide for the day, Regina Lundy, and we headed out for our first stop. Just over the New York State line into Vermont, on the edge of the scenic village of Pawlet, the Leach family has called their valley farm home for eight generations. The spectacular New England setting is truly breathtaking. Tim Leach, who with his wife Dot has raised their family here, has been joined by son Seth as a partner at Woodlawn Holsteins. Seth and his wife Molly are new parents of Logan so life has taken a most-enjoyable turn for the entire Leach family. Together, this father-son team is devoted 24/7 to the great herd that is really making a name for itself of late, particularly because of one cow and the spectacular family she heads. Woodlawn Juror Daisy (3E-93- DOM) comes by her good looks and transmitting ability very honestly. She is a third generation Excellent that was wanted for a National Convention Sale years ago, but Tim decided she should stay. What a smart decision, given that in her career, Daisy has a best record over 42,000 milk, has 233,000M lifetime, and has produced 199 embryos so far. She continues to flush! Daisy has six Excellent daughters to date (and there will be more many more!) -- five of them by Durham from one flush that yielded seven heifers. Two of the Durhams are EX-92, including Delta (EX-92) who in turn has daughters by Goldwyn, Dundee, and Stormatic. Tim and Seth s favorite milking daughter of Daisy is Woodlawn Allen Dakota- ET (EX-90), a sweetheart of a cow and the spitting image of her mother at the same age. Dakota was first-place senior 3-year-old at the 2009 Tri-County Holstein Show. When asked about how they have chosen service sires for Daisy and the family, Tim and Seth both point out that Daisy and her family have several qualities that lend themselves to particular breeding decisions. The family has enough dairy strength to use Goldwyn, while they have enough dairyness to use Dundee. The Durham- Dundee cross has been a great one on the family! The family s strength and capacity lend themselves to a variety of popular sires, as evidenced by the number of third and fourth generation Daisy s in the heifer pens. The Daisy family is also intriguing from that standpoint that these subsequent generations Daisy s granddaughters and great granddaughters may perhaps be the best ones of all. A Talent granddaughter, Dorie (VG-87, 2y) is everything anyone could hope for in a young cow. Like the rest of the family, she is black, stylish, angular enough and yet strong enough to compete in a very real housing environment. Many of the higher profile cows at Woodlawn are kept in a bedded pack barn that has is well-bedded with shavings but also has freestalls. It certainly makes a great place to view the Daisy family and other herd favorites. One of the really fine young cows in the herd is Woodlawn Dundee Paige (VG- 87) a terrifically-uddered Dundee daughter that was the Reserve Junior Champion at the 2008 Tri-County Show and returned this year to be first and Best Udder winner in the junior 3-year-old class. Paige was one of the contributors to Leachs being named Premier Exhibitor at this year s Tri-County Show. One other cow that has to be seen at the farm is Liddleholme-R Roxy Rhonda (EX-91), a 7th generation Excellent Roxy that was purchased at the Liddleholme Dispersal in Rhonda has been flushed extensively and is proving herself a great transmitter as well. Attendees at this year s State Fair saw her daughter, Woodhaven Roxy Rosalie- ET, win the winter calf class in the Youth Show for Hailee Liddle. Any visit to Woodlawn now and in the coming months will naturally flow in the direction of the sale Tim and Seth have planned for May 7, The Pride of Woodlawn will be just that a true reflection of their herd, breeding program, and the best individuals they have to offer. Tim readily admits that the day will be an emotional one. This has been my life s work, he states, the tug on his heart clear enough. The head to be sold will indeed reflect a life dedicated to careful breeding and care of great Holsteins. Leachs will be selling the best they have. The cattle will be sold at the Vermont State fairgrounds in Rutland for logistical reasons, and the Pride of Woodlawn promises to be a rare opportunity to extract from the heart of the farm s best cow families, especially the Daisy s. With youngsters on the ground (or coming soon) by such breed greats as Shottle, Alexander, Aftershock, and of course, more Goldwyns (he has worked especially well on the family), both Tim and Seth hope that buyers will be able to develop their own branches of the families they have been privileged to work with through the years. If the strong cow families behind the cattle offered are any indication of the future -- and odds would have it that they definitely are then the Pride of Woodlawn next spring will certainly be a day to remember. Leachs sincerely hope that when a young cow or heifer leaves their farm, a great cow family will develop for their buyers, much the way Daisy s dam s impact here began more than a decade and a half ago, when she first began to call Woodlawn home. Back in Saratoga County, Dawn and Jeff Sharts are busy building a top-notch herd and the facility to care for them. Not far outside the village of Greenwich, Aghamora

42 Dairy has actually been in the family for nearly 35 years, when Dawn s husband, the late Jeffrey Clay Sharts, purchased the farm and the herd that went with it. Son Jeff began a hay business in his teen years and today, the mother-son team is committed to assembling and breeding a premier herd of cattle. If anyone could dream about a barn in which to really take care of outstanding cattle, the facility at Aghamora would be it. The barn, when finished, will have 17 tie stalls and four large box stalls, in addition to an attached heifer facility. Cow comfort and care are paramount, and the elite cattle calling the farm home are doing exceptionally well in their new surroundings. Many of the cows were out on pasture at the time of our visit, but there were still some really good ones in the barn! One such highprofile cow is Pfaffs Gibson Rally (2E-94), a 7th generation Excellent Roxy with credits to 41, Rally, who was the Honorable Mention All-American Senior 2-Year-Old in 2005, is a wide-rumped, deep-bodied cow that is a breeder s dream with today s modern sires. She was purchased at the Rocklan Dispersal last November, as was Cowtown Durham Pewvey, a Durham daughter now fresh with a beautiful udder and milking well first calf. Her dam is an EX-93 Linjet and a granddaughter of show favorite El- Dor Saber Pansy (EX-95), several times an All-American nominee. And though there are members of the Elegance, Alicia, Murphy, Ashlyn, and Melanie family on the farm, the herd goes beyond the limits of black and white. Jersey fans will also recognize Arethusa Minister Giselle, the All-American Winter Calf in 2009, who has grown out beautifully and looks to be a contender this fall as well. Though relatively new names and faces in the Holstein business, Dawn and Jeff Sharts are well on their way to developing a great herd of cattle. Their enthusiasm is very apparent in conversation. Their herd s foundation is as solid as rock, and they hope to welcome folks to an open house in late October to share their love for great cattle and show their new facility. Watch for the Aghamora Dairy to be an influential presence in Holstein circles, both in the show ring and in the sale ring. It looks like a very promising future. It has only been since 1997, when Matt Trinkle graduated from high school, that a focus on registered Holsteins began at Trinkle Farms, located in Buskirk. Matt and his brother Rick farm together along with two cousins, Willie Korb and Ketih Hamilton. The family milks 310 cows and a look at the cows as they headed to the milking parlor made it clear that this herd spells milk! Prior to the push for registered Holsteins, Matt had shown colored breeds extensively in 4-H, particularly Ayrshires, and there are still a lot of good ones on the farm! Matt tells of some early purchases that have helped get them started in the business. Several local farms were sources of foundation cattle, including Woodlawn (Leachs), Clear Echo (Pecks), and Hooskip Farm (McMahons). Clear- Echo Garrison 1445-ET (VG-86) is backed by two VG-87 dams and has an Alexander heifer calf that Matt really likes. Matt likes to buy calves whenever possible in order to grow them himself and acclimate them to their farm environment. What has been creating the most excitement for Matt personally and for the farm are four early daughters of Orbe-View S Storm Hvezda-ET, the red-carrier September Storm son at Accelerated Genetics that is proving so popular with breeders around the United States. The four daughters at Trinkles are scored 87, 85, 82, and 81 points as young cows. Matt had used Hvezda as a young sire and these daughters that he ended up with are simply sensational! The favorite is Trinkle Hvezda 2337 (VG MS), a tall, dairy, beautifullyuddered young cow that has created a great deal of excitement for both Accelerated and Matt. A beautiful picture of her has been used in Accelerated s promotion of Hvezda and the daughters have brought several people in to see them. Matt smiles as he thinks about the level of improvement in the Hvezda daughters over their dams, something that any breeder can appreciate when a mating has worked! Matt has not just continued to use Hvezda, he presently has 75 head bred to him! Trinkle Farms is making its presence known in the Holstein show ring as well, and Matt was pleased to be Premier Breeder and Exhibitor at this year s Washington County Fair in addition to having the Reserve Grand Champion. His goals for the future include continuing to focus on breeding more type into the herd and developing the cow families he and Rick have started. In choosing sires, Matt looks very closely for high udder composites, using only bulls that are points or higher and ideally points. He is also stressing high feet & leg composites which makes great sense given their freestall environment. With the solid production already in place, enthusiastic breeders, and the desire to develop a great herd, the Trinkle prefix will no doubt become a familiar one to Empire State breeders and beyond.

52 SENATOR GILLIBRAND MEETS WITH FARMERS Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, the first New Yorker to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee in nearly 40 years, made a stop at Jerry-Dell Farm (Vaughn & Sue Sherman) in Dryden September 2 to visit with farmers and hear their concerns as the 2012 Farm Bill is put together. The Dryden stop was one of several made by the senator and was attended by dairy farmers, fruit growers, and people with other livestock and crop interests to help the senator in her work with the Farm Bill. We need to make sure the next Farm Bill is a good deal for New York. I plan to take the next several months to listen to farmers and businesses in every corner of the state and discuss my ideas on how to help farmers survive and prosper in the new economy. Over 35,000 farms stretch across 7.1 million acres in New York. The agriculture industry generates over $4 billion for the state s economy.
