2 Division Rules 1. See Jr. General Livestock Rules. 2. Ownership: All barrows to be farrowed on or after January 1, Gilts cannot be shown in market classes. Any animals shown in this department must have been continuously owned and personally cared for by the exhibitor since June 15, 2017 and may be transferred from 4-H or FFA or vice versa, or within family during the feeding period. All bill of sales must be dated on or prior to June 15, **Market Barrows must be tagged with NMSF ear tag and Hair DNA sample postmarked to NM Veterinary Diagnostic Services by June 15, 2017 to be eligible for entry. 3. Entries: The entry deadline is midnight August 1, Entries will only be accepted on-line through the New Mexico State Fair web-site. The entry fee is $15.00 per barrow. The entry fee for the Showmanship Class is $5.00. There is no limit on the number of barrows each exhibitor may enter. 4. Arrival: Jr. Market Barrow entries must be on grounds by 5 pm Saturday, September 9th, 2017 for Declaration Card submission. 5. Classification: Market Barrows will be classified Monday September 11th, 2017 at 8:00 am during the Market Barrow Show. Exhibitors will need to provide their declaration card to the Superintendent no later than 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 9, Late Declaration Cards will not be accepted. The decision of the classifier shall not be subject to protest or appeal. 6. Show Weight: Exhibitors will declare their own show weight rather than traditional weigh-in process. Weight will be declared by the exhibitor at time of turning in your Declaration Card to the Jr. Barrow Superintendent no later than 5:00 pm Saturday, September 10, At judging, the judge will identify the top barrows. These barrows will then be weighed. Weights must correspond to the declared weight within 10 pounds plus or minus. Any not meeting the weight tolerances will be disqualified. Watering of pigs after pig is officially weighed and before the class is judged is prohibited and will be subject to disciplinary action. The barrows will then be placed. Declared weights for barrows must be in a range from 210 pounds to 280 pounds. Entries will be divided into equal sized classes based on declared weights. Any discrepancy will be resolved at Superintendent s discretion. 7. Market Barrow Fitting: No dressing (such as oil, paint, powder, etc.) other than water may be used on barrows. Any barrow with dressing other than water will immediately be removed from the ring. Classifier will check for dressing, if found the animal and exhibitor will be disqualified. 3 8. Box Fans: will be allowed in the Swine Barns only with the approval of the Superintendent. Fans will not be allowed in the aisles or attached to the fence. All electrical cords must be Underwriters approved. 9. Shavings will not be furnished by the New Mexico State Fair, but may be purchased at the Feed Store located on the fairgrounds. 10. Water: There are no automatic waterer s in the barns. 11. Sale: See Junior Livestock Sale Rules, Division 38. A. Sale Barrows: decoration of market barrows is prohibited; barrows must be presented for sale in their natural state (i.e. No glitter, oil, paint, balloons, etc. allowed). B. All 30 (+ or -) sale positions will be determined by the percentage method. The maximum number of items to be sold are 30% of the number of barrow exhibitors. There will be no exceptions. This means that in some cases involving small classes, a Reserve Breed Champion will not be eligible to sell in the Jr. Livestock Sale. In those breed classes where an odd number of sale positions result, the Breed Champion will pull the next highest placing barrow in his class up to fill the odd sale slot. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion are required to sell - Breed Champions are not. 12. United States Department of Agriculture Wholesome Meat Act The United States Department of Agriculture Wholesome Meat Act applies to the sale of market livestock sold during the New Mexico State Fair as follows: (a) Animals must be in good health and carcasses free of drug or chemical residues. (b) Antibiotics and sulfonamides have required withdrawal periods. (c) Drug label directions for use and withdrawal periods must be followed (d) If drug or other chemical residues are found in tissue of carcasses, the entire carcass may be condemned. A licensed veterinarian should be consulted, and drug label directions read, before administering any antibiotics or sulfonamides. 13. Medications & Substances: Any substances from syringes and needles must be administered by a vet ONLY! Any exhibitor that does not follow this may be disqualified and asked to leave the grounds.

4 Jr. Market Barrow Market Certification Forms: All Exhibitors of Junior Market Animals are required to submit a Market Certification form and by signing such form, certify they are in compliance. The form must be signed by the following: (a) Junior exhibitor. (b) Parent or legal guardian. (c) County Extension Agent or Agricultural Education Advisor. This form must be notarized and must be brought to the Show and given to the Show officials by the exhibitor at the time the market animals are classified and/or sifted. No Junior Market animal will be allowed to show without this Market Certification form properly filled out and notarized. NMSF requires only ONE Market Certification form PER EXHIBITOR regardless of the number of animals or species. 15. Releases: Superintendents will release animals two (2) hours after the show on Monday, September 11th, Once an exhibitor obtains a written release, they may leave the grounds at any time. Champion Showman Buckles will be presented in Novice, Junior and Senior age groups. A showmanship class fee of $5.00 must be paid at time of entry. 7 BARROW CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS BERKSHIRE 1. Black and white with erect ears exhibiting Berkshire character. 2. A Berkshire must have white on face and tail (unless tail is docked). Three of the four legs must be white. 3. A Berkshire must NOT have a solid white or a solid black face from the ears forward. 4. A Berkshire must NOT have a solid black nose (rim of nose). 5. White is allowed on the ears, but neither ear can be entirely white. 6. An occasional splash of white may appear on the body. HAMPSHIRE 1. Must be black in color with a white belt starting on a front leg. The belt may partially or totally encircle the body. 2. Must possess Hampshire Breed character. (ears must be erect and not rounded) 3. Must NOT have any white hair or indications of streaking on the forehead. 4. Must NOT have any red hair. SPOTTED SWINE 1. Must be black and white. 2. Must possess Spotted breed character. 3. Ears cannot be erect. 4. Any red tinted or brown spots are ineligible. 5. No solid black head from ears forward. 6. No distinct white belt pattern (hair or skin) encircling and extending down and onto each shoulder. 7. Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence such ear tags are determined to be not permissible and are grounds for disqualification. DUROC 1. Must be red in color and possess Duroc breed character. (ears must be down and medium size) 2. Must NOT have any white hair located on the animal. 3. Must NOT have any black hair. 4. Must NOT have more than three black spots on the skin and none of these spots can be larger than two inches in diameter. 5. Must NOT have any shading or indication of a belt. POLAND CHINA 1. Must possess Poland China breed character. 2. Must be black with a white face and switch (unless tail is docked). Three of the four legs must be white. May have an occasional splash of white on the body. 3. Must have ears down. 4. Must not have evidence of belt formation. 5. Cannot have any red or sandy hair and/or pigment. 6. Hogs that have weighted ear tags or evidence of tampering of ears with possible ear tags are ineligible. DARK CROSSBRED Barrows with black and/or red pigmentation ( i.e. not sandy, rusty, orange, roan, gray or blue), comprising at least 20% of total body area, shall be considered a Dark Cross. These barrows may be black or red belted, black/red patched or spotted. Barrows with only blue, rusty, sandy, orange, and gray pigmentation are NOT considered Dark Crosses. Barrows that do not meet the breed classification requirements for Dark Crossbred will not be reclassed. CHESTER WHITE 1. Must possess Chester White breed character. 2. Must be solid white in color, no color on the skin larger than a silver dollar, no colored hair. 3. Ears must be down and medium size. 4. Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence of such ear tags are determined to be not permissible and are grounds for disqualification. Jr. Market Barrow 7

8 LANDRACE 1. Must be white in color and possess Landrace breed character. (ears must be down) 2. Must NOT allow any color hair other than white. 3. Must NOT allow more than three spots of skin pigmentation. 4. Must NOT allow any spot of skin pigmentation larger than one U.S. minted quarter. YORKSHIRE 1. Must be white in color and possess Yorkshire breed character. (ears must be erect) 2. Must NOT have any colored hair other than white. 3. Must NOT have colored skin pigmentation larger than one U.S. minted silver dollar. 4. Must not have masking above the eyes larger than a silver dollar. CROSSBRED 1. Barrows of any coloration pattern or pigmentation are eligible for entry in this breed. Jr. Market Barrow 8

9 Other Shows NMBBA Market Barrow Show Sponsored By: The New Mexico Bred Barrow Association Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 8:00 am The NMBBA sponsors the Market Barrow Show for those exhibitors who have purchased New Mexico bred barrows from eligible breeders and have followed the nomination and entry guidelines as provided by the association. Breed Champions will be awarded belt pins. Class winners will receive payback monies. All exhibitors will retain ownership of their animal(s). 10 NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR JUNIOR MARKET CERTIFICATION FORM (ONE FORM PER EXHIBITOR) We, the Junior Exhibitor and Parent/Guardian, certify that we have read, understand and will abide by all the rules and regulations of the New Mexico State Fair (NMSF), the Junior Division rules and regulations, both General and Livestock. We further certify that the use of any chemical or compound that is not approved by the FDA for use in meat producing animals and the illegal use of approved chemicals or compounds have not been administered to my Steer, Lamb, Barrow, Replacement Dairy Heifer or Market Goat. As a condition for participation in the Show, we the Junior Exhibitor and Parent/Guardian agree to submit any animal entered by the Exhibitor to inspection by a Veterinarian appointed by management, FDA, USDA/FSIS and/or New Mexico Department of Health and agrees to have such animal submitted to any tests as may be designated and requested by the Veterinarian. The show specifically reserves the right to have tissues, blood or urine laboratory analysis made on any animal entered for competition. The conclusions reached by the Veterinarian, as to whether such animal has been administered or given a substance or drug in violation of the rules or has not been properly withdrawn from approved drugs shall be final, without recourse, against the Show or any of its officers. A licensed Veterinarian should be consulted before administering any medication or growth stimulant. If, after examination by an official Veterinarian, an animal is found to have been subject to unethical practices, including producing an analysis with a quantity of a substance or drug in violation of the rules: (a) It will be disqualified. (b) Barred from further exhibition. (c) No awards will be made for the involved animal and any other animal exhibited by exhibitor. (d) Entry fees will not be refunded. (e) The Exhibitor will forfeit all rights and privileges to exhibit livestock in the future at the Show. If a product in violation of this rule is found in the tissue of a carcass of any animal sold through the sale connected with the NMSF, The Fair will in no way be liable or responsible for condition of carcass or sale price of animal and the carcass will be condemned and exhibitor forfeits all rights to sale proceeds, premiums and prizes.
