2 THE MAGNIFICENT Story of Zeus Abandoned, neglected, and terrified, Zeus was a broken dog who broke our hearts. When his owners literally dumped him at the shelter, he did not adjust well. Zeus suffered from severe separation anxiety and we weren t sure that he would be able to go to a home. Every day, for 64 days, multiple staff members worked with Zeus one-on-one, giving him unconditional love to build his trust and raise his spirits. On Day 64, Zeus met his forever family and the best canine-brother-from-another-mother, Ben. The family had adopted Ben (the brindle in the picture) a year and a half ago from the KWHS, and now both dogs are part of one big happy family! Follow Zeus and Ben on and see how a lot of love and a little time can heal a dog s soul! ONE SHELL OF A Rescue! Recently, one of our animal control officers found a snapping turtle on the side of the road. It was obvious that the turtle had been hit by a car and was seriously injured. When our medical staff examined the prehistoric-looking amphibian, they believed its jaw was fractured. While snapping turtles spend most of their time in water, female turtles travel over land to find ideal nesting sites in early-to-mid summer. Snapping turtles are decreasing in numbers in Ontario due to biological and environmental hazards, such as humans, and are on the species of special concern list in Canada. The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC), in Peterborough, protects Ontario s native turtles and works to conserve their habitat. Because the OTCC is equipped with a turtle hospital that treats and rehabilitates turtles, the KWHS contacted it immediately after examining the injured turtle. The OTTC s veterinarians examined the turtle and discovered that it did have a fractured beak and lower jaw. We are happy to report that our shelled friend is now mended and has been returned to the Laurel Creek area in Waterloo where it has a home.

3 MINISTER BARDISH CHAGGER VISITS KWHS July 31, 2017 The Honourable Bardish Chagger visited the Kitchener- Waterloo Humane Society to see the Canada Summer Job Program in action as eight (8) of the Camp Counsellors at the KWHS were hired through this program for the Animaniacs Summer Camp. SUMMER CAMP REVIEWS FROM THE PARENTS! BONNIE P. Letter from Foster-Parent July 7, 2017 KWHS I just wanted to write and let you know that I think your camp is the best I have seen. From the registration process to the pick-up system, it is a well-run, efficient and enjoyable experience. As a foster parent for 27 years I have had many children in a variety of different camps but this one is my favourite. In regards to her child in camp: Whatever you guys are doing at camp, you are doing a fantastic job motivating and inspiring children to have the best camp experience possible.. I noticed that my child was the most regulated that I have seen in 3-1/2 years. Thank you for an amazing week and a ton of positive memories to add to my child s happy jar. He s committed to art camp this week but if you have space I d love to sneak him back into your camp ERIK H. from Parent August 15, 2017 SPHS I can t say enough good things about the Stratford-Perth Humane Society Animaniacs summer camp. My daughter went for 4 weeks this summer and was excited to go every day! Each week is packed with fun and informative activities that my daughter couldn t wait to tell me about when she got home. The counsellors are amazing and really encourage the children s love for animals. The campers take pride in knowing they are making a difference in the lives of the animals. I definitely recommend the SPHS Animaniacs summer camp. My daughter wishes she could go every day and can t wait to go back next summer!

4 VIC HAYTER Tree Planting Vic Hayter had three passions in life family, business, and animals. Quiet and modest, Vic went about building community while building his businesses. Over the years, Vic and Joanne Hayter s generosity brought two major community events to fruition Stratford Summer Music and Gloria s Place, the home of the Stratford- Perth Humane Society. This year, with the support of the City of Stratford, the SPHS Best in Show Committee planted a tulip tree in Vic s memory. For many years, the Hayters have hosted the Best in Show event at their Ardent Park Hotel. Since 2012, the Best in Show committee has raised more than $150,000 to support the pets cared for by the SPHS. The choice of a tulip tree is particularly fitting as it is a fast growing and sturdy plant Vic and Joanne s impact on the Stratford community was fast growing and will be long lasting. IN MEMORY OF Jody Warren Jody Warren was an extraordinary woman who touched many lives in her 52 years. We are eternally grateful to her family, in particular Marty, Brett and Kelly for supporting her in her role of a foster mother here at the KW Humane Society. Jody passed away suddenly at home on July 18, Jody truly threw herself into fostering, impacting the lives of 70 kittens during her time with us and the lives of the seventy happy families who are now their proud owners. She had pictures of every kitten that she fostered and kept phenomenal records. They were a huge part of her life and family. Jody loved being a mother and a foster parent, her family and her kittens meant the world to her. Fostering orphan kittens is not easy and sometimes despite our best efforts, it s not enough, so while there was lots of laughter there were also tough times, but Jody never became discouraged or said no. There are never enough or just the right words to properly express our thanks from so many of us whose lives she touched. Her actions spoke volumes and the lady with the heart of gold will always be remembered.

5 TEAM Tech-Mazing Did you know that the team at the KWHS Animal Hospital performs surgeries in a typical morning? Standing alongside our team of veterinarians is a handful of the most dedicated and talented Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs). While the Animal Hospital was established to care for the pets of the KWHS, new programs such as the Weber Clinic and the Community Assistance Program keep the veterinarians and RVTs busy all week. The super team of techs, including Rachel Crane, Stacy Murphy, Samantha Burt, Kirsten Sichewski, and Wesley Harris makes sure that every single pet is safe and cared for from admittance to recovery. That s a lot of care, as there are many animals who are receiving meds, IV drips, and other treatments in the shelter at any given time. In October 2016, the KWHS sister organization, Stratford-Perth Humane Society opened a new centre which included a satellite hospital facility, operating under the direction of the KWHS Hospital. The expertise of staff veterinarians and RVTs is called upon daily at both sites. In fact, KWHS is especially proud of Rachel s role as she was recently presented with the RVT of the Year award due to her expertise in the field and her dedication to the humane medical treatment of pets. We do some pretty amazing things here, says Rachel. We had a dog with a fractured leg, and we were able to restore full function to that limb. We also met a cocker spaniel with chronic ear infections. I m proud to say, that s no longer an issue. The number one goal of the Humane Societies is to ensure every pet is given a chance and our RVTs do whatever they can to make that happen. From monitoring them during and after surgery, to maintaining equipment and ensuring the Animal Hospital is stocked with supplies, they are truly Tech-Mazing! AWASCO APPOINTS NEW Executive Director Ross Wells, Chair of the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Kathrin Delutis to the position of Executive Director of AWASCO effective September The board, staff, volunteers, donors, and partners look forward to working with Kathrin to move the organization forward. Kathrin and her family are residents of Kitchener. Kathrin has been an active volunteer with the Red Cross and Kin/Kinettes along with a successful career with Habitat for Humanity Halton and Canada, and most recently as Executive Director of Festivals and Events Ontario.
