Your Legacy Of Love For The Animals
PROGRAMS HELPING ABANDONED, ABUSED AND NEGLECTED ANIMALS; ALL THANKS TO GIFTS FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU. The Toronto Humane Society is completely funded by the generous donations from animal lovers, just like you. While all contributions are meaningful, legacy gifts have the added potential to leave a lasting imprint on the hearts of so many animals in desperate need. EVERY LEGACY GIFT ENSURES ANIMALS IN NEED ARE CARED FOR. At our 11 River Street shelter in Toronto, we are dedicated to providing a safe haven and compassionate care to mistreated, neglected and abandoned animals. We have a modern facility where animals in need receive food, water, enrichment activities, training and a comfortable place to stay 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Most of the animals that arrive through our shelter doors are in need of immediate medical treatment to heal from accidents, illness or diseases and our highly trained veterinary team ensures they receive top notch care from day one. We also ensure every animal is vaccinated and spay/ neutered prior to adoption. Each year we place thousands of dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small pets into loving and caring forever homes. HELPING PETS ALSO MEANS HELPING PEOPLE. EVERY LEGACY GIFT ENSURES THE CONTINUATION OF VITAL COMMUNITY PROGRAMS. Our public services are designed to help pets in our community by helping the people that care for them. We offer our community a variety of programs such as: adoptions, pet food bank, behavior training programs, high volume spay/neuter/vaccination clinics, and more. We are always looking for new ways to help more animals and expand on our programs. LEGACY GIFTS ALLOW US TO HELP ANIMALS TODAY, WHILE PLANNING FOR TOMORROW.

YOUR LEGACY - THEIR FUTURE MEET LUCKY DOG BONNIE Poor Bonnie was brought to us after experiencing a terrible accident she was hit and dragged by a GO train, leaving her with a broken leg and pelvis, not to mention numerous scrapes and cuts. After emergency surgery to repair her broken leg and pin the broken pelvis, Bonnie was ready to heal. We have placed her in one of our foster homes to recover and work on rehabilitating her leg until she is ready for adoption. BEFORE AFTER MEET SIX-WEEK OLD BRUNHILDA BEFORE When Brunhilda was found she was more than a little worse for wear. She was terribly underweight, and had experienced a head trauma which left her eye badly damaged. The eye was unusable and had to be removed. After a successful surgery, Brunhilda started on her road to recovery - she gained weight and even began to play (which we hadn t seen her do since she came into our care). After a stay in foster care, she will be ready to be adopted to a forever home. AFTER YOUR LEGACY GIFTS ENSURE THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO PROVIDE MEDICAL ATTENTION, REHABILITATION AND FOREVER HOMES TO PETS LIKE BONNIE AND BRUNHILDA. 4
TORONTO HUMANE SOCIETY BY THE NUMBERS 223 TONS 223 TONS Last year we went through 223 tons of food through our shelter and food bank program. 12,000 Vaccines were given last year alone to immunize all our animals against rabies, kennel cough, distemper, and influenza. This includes animals in our care and animals who ve visited our public clinic. 28,184 Volunteer hours were clocked last year. Our volunteers help us care, love and advocate for all our animals. We simply couldn t do what we do without them. 90,000 Dog walks last year. Regular exercise is a necessity for dogs, no matter the size, breed, gender or even age. Thanks to our dog walkers, all our pooches get the exercise and enrichment they need to be healthy and happy. 12,371 Cat enrichment hours. Play is very important for all our cats. Cats are naturally inquisitive, social and playful, so playtime and general interaction can help keep their spirits up and give them a sense of purpose. 1,334 Animals placed in foster homes. By placing some of our animals in foster homes we free up needed space at the shelter and help the dog or cat by being in a natural and loving environment. 1,839 Animals were transferred to us from other shelters across the country for additional help, medical attention and care. *All data from
GETTING STARTED MAKING A GIFT FOR TOMORROW Do you wish you could make a significant gift to support the animals at the Toronto Humane Society? By making a planned gift, such as a bequest in your will, you can help the animals without affecting your current income. THE FIRST STEP IS PLANNING You may wish to work with an estate lawyer to develop your will and plan for future bequests to the Toronto Humane Society. However, you can also prepare your will today using our lawyer approved and simple step-by-step online service! Visit Some things you ll need to think about: Choose an executor: This is the person(s) who would be responsible for settling your estate according to your wishes it could be a family member, friend or lawyer. Guardian for your pet: If you have a pet, it s important to make sure they will be cared for if you are not able to. If you do not have someone who can provide a loving home for your pet, you can leave instructions that your pet be brought to the Toronto Humane Society. We will ensure your pet will be cared for and placed into a loving home. 6
What do you want to leave, and to whom? Make a list of your assets, (everything you own) and who you want to remember then you will be prepared when you create your will. Once you have included your loved ones and the special people in your life, you can then make plans for charities you might want to include. Leaving a gift to charitable organizations whose work you believe in, such as the Toronto Humane Society, will make a lasting impact that will not be forgotten. Keep your will safe: Once you have a will in place, it s important to keep it in a safe place - be sure to let a loved one know where it is. Your will can also be updated and changed at any time. If you already have a will in place, but would like to add the Toronto Humane Society as a beneficiary, please speak to your estate lawyer. YOUR LEGACY IS A FOOTPRINT YOU WILL LEAVE BEHIND - GIFTS TO THE TORONTO HUMANE SOCIETY WILL CONTINUE TO TOUCH THE HEARTS OF ANIMALS IN NEED OF HEALING AND YOU WILL BE HELPING ANIMALS LONG INTO THE FUTURE. Toronto Humane Society, 11 River Street, Toronto, ON, M5A 4C2 Charitable Registration # RR0001 7
TYPES OF LEGACY GIFTS Types of Bequests with sample wording, for consideration: Residual Bequest: Donating all, or a portion, of what is left in your estate after your debts, taxes, expenses and specified bequests have been paid. I give to the Toronto Humane Society, 11 River Street, Toronto, ON, M5A 4C2, all (or %) of the residue of my estate Specific Bequest: Donating a specific dollar amount, or item such as real estate, stocks, bonds. I give to the Toronto Humane Society, 11 River Street, Toronto, ON, M5A 4C2, the sum of $. 8
Your gifts allow us to plan for the future, and continue to help abandoned, mistreated and injured pets. To make a legacy gift, please share the information below with your legal professional: Legal Name: Toronto Humane Society Address: 11 River Street, Toronto, ON, M5A 4C2 Charitable Registration # RR0001 Other ways to leave a planned gift include adding the Toronto Humane Society as a beneficiary of your Life Insurance, RRSP, RRIF or Securities whichever option you choose, you can feel good that your gift will be saving animal lives. If you have chosen to include the Toronto Humane Society in your future gift plans, we would love it if you could let us know so we can express our gratitude: ext 2399 or fundraising@torontohumanesociety.com. 9
YOUR LEGACY - THEIR FUTURE Every pet comes to the shelter with their own story to tell. We embrace them all with open arms we are only able to do this because of donor support. MEET MAGGIE It was a very sad day when 10-year-old Chihuahua Maggie was surrendered to our care. Maggie s owner was heartbroken, but had no other choice as she was suffering from a debilitating illness and could no longer look after both herself and her beloved dog. After many tears Maggie s owner had to leave without her, and the little dog was distraught. Our caring staff tried their best to make Maggie feel at home, but she still had a hard time adjusting. We quickly realized that the shelter was too overwhelming for Maggie and our foster program was the best place for her. She s now thriving in her new home, even though we know she ll always miss her first mom. MEET GINO Gino, his mom, and his four brothers and sisters were dumped in an alley in downtown Toronto. If we didn t take them in, they may not have survived. Although the cat family was frightened, they were fortunately healthy. After vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries, they were all ready to find their forever homes through our adoption program they are now receiving all of the love they deserve. YOUR LEGACY GIFT WILL ENSURE WE ARE ABLE TO HELP ANIMALS THAT HAVE NOWHERE ELSE TO GO, AND GIVE THEM NEW BEGINNINGS. 10
NEW BEGINNINGS YOUR DONATIONS MAKE OUR PROGRAMS AND NEW BEGINNINGS LIKE THESE POSSIBLE! As foster parents for the THS, our lives have been touched by all of our foster puppies, but there was one we couldn t let go of, River. He is our sweet, playful, old soul who has brought so much love and happiness into our lives. His name is symbolic of our support for the THS as he is named after River St. where the THS is located. We couldn t be more thankful for the opportunity to foster deserving dogs and for bringing River into our lives. Thank you, Thank you! With Percy, it was love at first sight! He rolled over on his back for a belly rub upon our first meeting. Within days, he had become a fixture in our household, quickly winning our hearts completely. We took him on camping trips and cottage weekends, to dog parks and grooming sessions, with each new adventure revealing more of this little guy s personality. Ever since we brought him home almost two years ago, Teddy has grown up to become a very spunky, talkative cat who loves his 5a.m. belly rubs, feathery toys, and the Christmas tree! Thank you THS for connecting us with our furry family members
Thank you for considering a legacy gift of love for the animals. Legal name: Toronto Humane Society.
