We at LAWS have been very lucky to work with the local high schools in our area over the years. This June was the completion of the Co-operative Education for many of our students. Our particular students were from St Luke CHS, SFCDI, Perth HS as well as St Lawrence College in Kingston and we couldn t have been happier with them- they were amazing and we are looking forward to seeing them all again soon- congratulations to all of LAWS Co-Op Students! Also please visit our Facebook page to view the remarkable video compiled by one of our Co-op Students Leah to highlight our animals ( Pictured below are Andrew and Danny with Axel; Hanna; Heidi; Jasmine and Ginnie. Adoptions at LAWS 5 Calling All Sponsors! 5 Humane Education update 6 Calling all Calendar Dogs and Cats! LAWS is currently planning the 2016 Calendar. We have wonderful volunteer professional photographers (see photos on left) who take amazing photos of our dogs and cats looking for their furever homes. This coming calendar we will have a month set aside for our winning Happy Tails photo- we love getting updates from our past adoptions and we want to show everyone! Want in? Simply us your Happy Tails photo with an update; winners will be announced in August on Facebook and in our Fall Newsletter- good luck!
Page 2 Perth Pet Valu April Adoption Month Pet Valu Perth was excited to present the total amount raised during National Pet Appreciation Month for pets in-need at LAWS. An overwhelming $3, in supplies and donations was raised during the month of April, as well as five cats found their forever homes. Executive Director Rhonda Fleming and Marketing Director Beth Searle of LAWS are happy to have such support by the community and Pet Valu Perth in making a difference one paw at a time. UPDATE: Golf Tournament Date Change A small monthly donation can make a huge difference in our ability to care for our resident animals and provide services to the community. Thank you! On August 22 nd, come play 18 holes of golf with a power cart, dinner and silent auction all for only $ the same cost to spay/neuter a cat or dog. DON T FORGET your chance to win $5,000 for a hole in one! Contact us to get your tickets! Each spring during kitten season, many of newborn kittens join the thousands of cats already in shelters across the country. That means your local shelter LAWS has many cute, cuddly newborns, in addition to all the mellow, older cats and everything June is Adopt a Cat Month in between. And the shelter staff here are ready to help you adopt your very first cat or to bring home a friend for another beloved cat! As part of the Adopt a Cat Month, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies held their annual Just for Cats Festival in June at Landsdown Park in Ottawa. The aim of the festival is to increase the level of cat care across the country and enhance the human-cat bond. (continued on page 3)
Page 3 June is Adopt a Cat Month- cont d (continued from page 2) At this free event, LAWS had an educational booth about declawing, summer tips to keep your pet safe and how to be proactive with your pet's dental hygiene. Roxie, our soon-to-be service cat was also in attendance (who had a snuggle with Spartacat seen at right), and we had fantastic videos screened at our table, produced by our own Cat Photography group! Thank you to our photographers for all the effort they have put in to making the video! Also a big thank you again to Jayme from Purdy Paws for sponsoring LAWS to attend this event LAWS continues to increase its level of cat care and looks forward to participating in this event. At the end of the day we had 612 people come to our booth so thank you to everyone who came by to say hi and learn more about LAWS. Walk Your Paws for LAWS coming soon! In September LAWS will once again be hosting the Walk Your Paws for LAWS Walkathon along the Mississippi RiverWalk Trail in Carleton Place. This nature trail runs from Princess Street to Anthony Curro Park alongside the River. Date to be confirmed in the next few weeks! The Walkathon will be hosted behind the Arena and once again will have silent auction tables, a bazaar sale of wonderful and eclectic items, a bake sale table, face painting and a band singing to keep us all in high spirits while taking part in this event. We are in the midst of finalizing one more new addition to our walkathonhaving like-minded animal rescues participate as well. working with other rescue groups and the hope is to have our 5 th annual Walkathon as a way to highlight others working for the same purpose- to help as many animals in our area as possible. Interested in fostering? Contact the shelter for more information: shelter@lanarkanimals.ca Your Vet Corner: Courtesy of Blueberry Veterinarian Hospital One of the great benefits of living in Lanark County is that none of us are too far away from a lake, river or pond. This makes our region a great playground for people and their pets, but there are certain hazards we need to keep in mind before we let our dogs tromp around in the water. One infectious disease that is associated with water and that is becoming more common in our area is Leptospirosis. (continued on page 4)
Page 4 (continued from page 3) What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a bacteria that can infect domestic and wild animals, including raccoons, deer, rodents, cattle, dogs and even humans. Although leptospirosis can be spread through a bite from an infected animal, the bacteria is most often spread through infected wildlife urine. Leptospirosis survives well in stagnant or slow moving water, particularly during warmer months and gains access to the body either by mouth or through abrasions on the skin. Is there a risk to humans? Humans can become infected by leptospirosis. Because infected dogs tend to urinate more frequently and larger volumes, accidents in the house are common. It is important to wear gloves when cleaning up dog urine and then clean the area thoroughly with a bleach solution. Remember, as with many infectious diseases, children, the elderly and those with a compromised immune system are at greatest risk. Can Leptospirosis be treated? Antibiotics are the first line of treatment and many patients respond well providing the kidneys or other organs are not too severely damaged. If patients are dehydrated or debilitated, they may require hospitalization for monitoring and intravenous fluids. How can Leptospirosis be Prevented? As with many wildlife associated diseases, avoiding direct contact with wildlife, wildlife urine, feces and stagnant waters helps limit the risk of infection. Additionally, a vaccination is available for dogs and is routinely given in this region to help prevent disease. For more information, contact your local veterinarian! Happy Tails! MAX Update from his forever family: Max left LAWS with Hip dysplasia as well as multiple tumours in his lungs that will lead to his death. We were told his life span is 6 months to two years. Max is doing very well now. When he came here he was coughing a lot, shedding badly and had vomited a few times then stopped eating. His meds were increased and wet food was added to his diet. Now there is no coughing or vomiting and after being brushed twice a day he barely sheds at all anymore. He is also very active playing with his adoptive brother. Here js a photo of him eating his pills and then lounging afterward..
Page 5 Adoptions at LAWS Adoptions at LAWS have been continuous and keeping us happily quite busy! Here are a few of our animals who found their forever homes Here are (in order): Axel, Decko, Gary, Florida, Alaska, Olga (now Queen Zoey), Django, Morgan and Cleo Check out our Facebook for updates on all our animals finding their forever home : Calling All Sponsors! We at LAWS have many upcoming events such as the Putt 4 the Mutts Golf Events (see from page 3 of newsletter), along with the Walk Your Paws for LAWS in September and new this year we will be hosting a Black Cat Halloween Party at Temples! All of these wonderful and fun fundraising events of course cannot go ahead without help from you. If you or your business are interested in learning more about the varying levels of sponsorship for each upcoming event, along with how LAWS will help advertise your brand, contact us at: events@lanarkanimals.ca
