Stay up-to-date with what s happening at American House of Jenison by liking our page. Pictures are posted weekly, as well as reminders of events on our campus. March 2016 March is here, and in addition to March Madness and St. Patrick s Day, it s time to celebrate Wellderly Week! Beginning on the third Monday in March, this weeklong event is a celebration and recognition of senior citizens who do not act their age. If you take a look around you, it s easy to see just what that means: Today s seniors are something special. Medical advances and active lifestyles are helping seniors live longer than ever, and not just live, but thrive. Senior adults are becoming pros at Wii, going on frequent excursions, volunteering, exercising daily and updating their Facebook pages! These are the people who are showing the rest of society that 80 is the new 70, and so on. Remember, as you celebrate Wellderly Week, the words of poet Robert Browning: Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.

Mushers and a team of 16 dogs, of which at least 6 must be on the towline at the finish line, cover the distance in 9 15 days or more. The Iditarod began in 1973 as an event to test the best sled dog mushers and teams but evolved into today s highly competitive race. The current fastest winning time record was set in 2014 by Dallas Seavey with a time of 8 days, 13 hours, 4 minutes, and 19 seconds. As of 2012, Dallas Seavey was also the youngest musher to win the race at the age of 25, while as of 2013, at the age of 53, Dallas father Mitch Seavey was the oldest person to ever win the race. Teams generally race through blizzards causing whiteout conditions, sub-zero temperatures and gale-force winds, which can cause the wind chill to reach -100 F. A ceremonial start occurs in the city of Anchorage and is followed by the official restart in Willow, a city 80 miles north of Anchorage. The trail runs from Willow up the Rainy Pass of the Alaska Range into the sparsely populated interior, and then along the shore of the Bering Sea, finally reaching Nome in western Alaska. The trail is through a harsh landscape of tundra and spruce forests, over hills and mountain passes, and across rivers. While the start in Anchorage is in the middle of a large urban center, most of the route passes through widely separated towns and villages, and small Athabaskan and Iñupiat settlements. The Iditarod is regarded as a symbolic link to the early history of the state and is connected to many traditions commemorating the legacy of dog mushing. The race is a very important and popular sporting event in Alaska, and the top mushers and their teams of dogs are local celebrities; this popularity is credited with the resurgence of recreational mushing in the state since the 1970s. While the yearly field of more than fifty mushers and about a thousand dogs is still largely Alaskan, competitors from fourteen countries have completed the event, including the Swiss Martin Buser, who became the first international winner in Iditarod_Trail_Sled_Dog_Race

Make It Up March 26 is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day. With March also containing National Pig Day, National Grammar Day and National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day, it s clear that just about anything can be celebrated as a holiday. Have you ever thought about starting a new holiday? What happened to make you consider the idea? What do you think would make a good holiday? Would it relate to a person, place or thing? How would it be celebrated? What traditions could be started? What is the craziest name you can think of for a new holiday? Are there any existing holidays you feel should be celebrated differently? What new traditions could be added to existing holiday celebrations? ~Staff~ Corbin Armock 3/1 Shari Jackson 3/4 Jesus Mateo 3/4 Judy Boven 3/6 Alyssa Schilthuis 3/9 Sean Stevens 3/15 Deb Chase 3/20 Amber Trudeau Bartlett 3/21 Sara Blauw 3/22 Shirley Parker-Detmer 3/23 Jen Engvall 3/27 Darren Tigelaar 3/28 May happiness and sunshine fill your day, not only on your birthday but the whole year through. 4 4 The World of Every year, on or near March 2, schools and libraries celebrate the birthday of revolutionary author Dr. Seuss with Read Across America. Before Seuss, Dick and Jane books were common tools for teaching reading. The books were generally regarded as uninspiring, so in 1957, Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. The book told a fun and fanciful story while using many of the same words as Dick and Jane. Other Seuss favorites include And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, Horton Hears a Who! and Hop on Pop. The Lorax was Seuss statement on environmental issues. The animated film version was released in (continued on p. 5) The Lunch Bunch is scheduled for Friday, March 4th, at 11:30pm. If you have a restaurant idea, please let a Life Enrichment staff member know! We are always open to suggestions. On Friday, March 11th, Eddy Francisco will be performing at Beechwood. Head on over at 2:00pm to listen to the ever talented Eddy! We enjoy having him on our campus; he s a fantastic entertainer. Fred Walker will be returning to Sandalwood on Friday, March 18th, at 1:30pm. Fred has a wonderful show singing old favorites. Lastly, on Friday, March 25th, Kentwood will be hosting BINGO Bash. The past couple of months Kentwood has traveled here for BINGO; now it s our turn to visit their campus. Trivia How much do you know?! Rather, how much can you learn?? Mark Littel will be hosting a trivia time on Friday, March 18th. Come to Beechwood at 2pm Friday afternoon to learn more fun facts and enjoy camaraderie with your fellow residents. Tea Time The tea parties have been a huge success! Each week the Life Enrichment staff enjoys preparing for these parties and spending time getting to know our residents better. Each tea party consists of some sort of sweet treat, tea and coffee, and a time of socializing and reminiscing. Some of you have already asked that the tea parties continue. We plan to have Tea Time once a month at each building. If you missed the tea party in February, be sure to come to the next one! These are some pictures from the Cottonwood and Sandalwood parties:
5 5 CPR Training The staff at American House Senior Living conducts training in many areas, to be ready for any emergency that our residents may have. One of those skills is keeping our American Red Cross CPR up-to-date. Certificates are issued for two years and staff is then scheduled to renew their CPR at the end of that second year. Recognition of a resident in distress is a top priority to our staff. If someone is choking or needs CPR, we are ready and willing to help. American House Senior Living partners with our Emergency Medical System and our Ottawa Country Sheriff department. (continued from p. 4) Seuss editor, Bennett Cerf, once bet him that he could not write a book with 50 words or less. Seuss response was Green Eggs and Ham, which uses exactly 50 words, many of which are repeated throughout the story. The writer showed a quick wit during interviews. He once said, If I were invited to a dinner party with my characters, I wouldn t show up. He was also known to give ridiculous answers to questions he disliked. Though his children s books are what he is best known for, Seuss also penned several books for adults, including You re Only Old Once!
6 6 In the spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours. Mark Twain An optimist is the human personification of spring. Susan J. Bissonette Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush. Doug Larson Spring is nature s way of saying, Let s party! Robin Williams If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. Anne Bradstreet If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. Nadine Stair Oreo Mint Trifle 1 package of Oreo Mint Cookies 1 small package JELL-O Chocolate Pudding 2 cups cold Milk 2 cups Heavy Cream ¼ cup Powdered Sugar 1 tsp Mint Extract (optional in case you don t like mint) or 1-2 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil Green Food Coloring DIRECTIONS Make pudding according to package directions. Place in refrigerator Whip heavy cream until it begins to peak. Add powdered sugar and continue to whip. Add mint and 6-10 drops food coloring and continue to whip until peaks form. Place in refrigerator. Chop approximately ¾ of the Oreos and scatter into bottom of container. Top with about ¼ cup chocolate pudding, then add another small amount of Oreo topping. Top with whipped cream mixture. (If you prefer no mint flavor, you can use vanilla in place of the mint.)
7 7 Attitude Adjustments That Raise God Honoring Expectations Adjust Your Perspective Once there was a woman whose side window overlooked the backyard of her neighbor s house. Each day, the woman would look out the window and complain how her neighbor s laundry never looked clean. She often commented on what a bad housekeeper her neighbor was. One day she noticed that her neighbor s laundry looked much better: colors brighter and whites whiter. The woman commented to her husband, About time our neighbor got her laundry right. The woman s husband responded, Our neighbor s laundry is the same I just cleaned our windows! Sometimes in life, it is our perspective that needs an adjustment. Often, we view situations from a perspective of negativity and discouragement. In the Bible, a man named Gideon lived in Israel during a time when Israel was occupied by their enemies. Because of this, Gideon was petrified. Nonetheless, an angel appeared to Gideon one day and said, The Lord is with you, mighty warrior. Sometimes, when we get discouraged, our zip code is doubt and we hide, shrink back, or stop trying. In times like this, we need to recapture God honoring expectations by adjusting our perspective. This shift will always take movement on our part. Back to Gideon s story: The Lord turned to him and said, Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian s hand. Am I not sending you? Pardon me, my lord, Gideon replied, but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family. The Lord answered, I will be with you. Judges 6:14-16 When our perspective changes from can t happen to God is with you, we come to an understanding that ANYTHING can happen. What is the area in your life where you need to realize that anything can happen with God s power? Examples might include: a strained marriage; kids who don t respect you; no financial freedom; making it through college; forgiving someone, etc. What battle has God promised to fight with you? Edited by Steven Faulk and adapted from Ray Johnson, HQ: The Hope Quotient, Measure it. Raise it. You ll Never Be The Same, Don t be afraid, for I am with you. Don t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10 Songs of Faith St. Patrick ( AD) was a man zealous for the things of God. As a missionary, he defied an Irish King s edict that restricted the lighting of candles on Easter Eve. King Logaire of Tara had decreed that no one was allowed to light any fires until a pagan spring festival was launched by the lighting of a fire on Slane Hill. Patrick chose to honor God in spite of the threat of death. King Logaire was so impressed with Patrick s brave devotion, he let him continue his missionary work unhindered. An 8th Century Monk, Dallan Forgaill, penned the words to Be Thou My Vision, as a tribute to St. Patrick s wholehearted loyalty to God. The music to accompany the lyrics is an ancient Irish folk tune called Slane.
