NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB Date: November 19, 2010 To: All Clubs Licensed to Hold Pointing Breed Field Trials Subject: Flexible Format Trial Many pointing breed ield trial clubs are faced at some point with the question of how to handle an unexpected number of entries. The trial format (courses and order of stakes) given in the Premium is based on the club s judgment regarding an ef icient manner to handle a normal size entry. An issue arises when entries are larger than expected. Assuming the club has the resources, what can it do to handle the extra entries? Given the number of calls regarding this dilemma, the Performance Event Department decided to address the issue. The question is What provisions can be made to allow a host club a degree of lexibility in running their trial to accommodate a larger than expected entry, while still allowing the club to impose an upper limit on the maximum size of their trial? The solution must be considerate of the participants by providing for reasonable steps to inform them of a change in format from that shown on the Premium if that is what the club decides to do in order to ef iciently handle the entries received. This past summer the Department e mailed to all licensed clubs a draft proposal called the Flexible Format Option. Response from individuals was also encouraged. The response to this proposal was very positive, with 94% responding in favor of the idea. Several suggestions were submitted. These have been considered and modi ications to the draft proposal were made. The proposal was approved by the AKC Board in November and takes effect for any event for which a Premium has not yet been submitted. Brie ly a club now has three options when planning their trial (1) Fixed Format Trial, (2) Unlimited Trial, and (3) Flexible Format Trial. The details are spelled out on the attached document. This is a very fundamental change to how trials can be run. If questions arise, please contact the AKC pointing breed ield representatives or e mail the of ice at ieldtrials@akc.org. FIELD TRIAL RULES AND STANDARD PROCEDURE FOR POINTING BREDS PROCEDURE 4. DRAWING AND BRACING 4-H. Options Regarding Number of Entries. A club hosting a licensed or member ield trial may choose from three options regarding the number of entries they are willing to accept. The option selected is at the discretion of the club based on the resources available and consideration for participants. 4-H (1) Fixed Format Trial. Limit Entries to the Number That Can Be Run Under the Format Shown in the Premium. If this option is selected: The premium shall state a limit regarding the number of entries for the trial, or for each or any stake, or as the number of entries that can be judged within the daylight hours available on the dates of the trial and that entries will close when the limits have been reached if this occurs prior to the speci ied closing time. The trial must be run as stated in the premium and it must be completed in the days speci ied. The club can not reserve the right to rearrange the running order of the trial or add/rearrange judges. 4-H (2) Unlimited Trial. Accept All Entries. If this option is selected: The premium shall not in any manner state a limit to the number of entries that will be ac cepted. Further, it shall state the club reserves the right to r earrange the running order if conditions warrant.. A club is obligated to accommodate all entries received prior to closing.

A club may add courses, rearrange the running of the stakes, add / rearrange judges, and add days to the end of the trial. If judges are added / rearranged, the club is under no obligation to refund entry fees if a participant decides to withdraw except for dogs and/or people that become ineligible to run under the revised judging panel. If judges for a stake are changed from those shown in the premium, the club must refund entry fees if a participant decides to withdraw. No entries may be withdrawn for this reason after the stake has started. 4-H (3) Flexible Format Trial. Specify a Maximum Number of Entries Reserve Right to Rearrange Running Order. If this option is selected: The premium shall state that the trial is being run as a lexible format trial and the club re serves the right to rearrange the running or der of the stakes and add / rearrange judges if conditions warrant. The premium shall state a maximum number of entries that will be allowed, either by stake or the trial in total or as the number of dogs that can be judged within the daylight hours available on the dates of the trial and that en tries will close when the maximum number of entries has been reached if this occurs prior to the speci ied closing time. The trial must be completed in the days speci ied. The format speci ied in the premium should depict the manner in which the club expects to run the trial based on its previous experience. On the occasion that an unexpectedly large or small entry occurs which can be more ef i ciently accommodated by a different format than the one stated in the premium, the lexi ble format option allows a club to rearrange the running order of the stakes and add / re arrange judges. The club must decide how to format the trial before the drawing. The trial should be run as closely as possible to the original format. The club must make a reasonable effort to inform all affected participants and AKC if the trial format changes from the one shown in the premium. The event secretary must be available to take calls. 8 2010 NGSPA Hungarian Partridge Championships By Keith Richardson This 8 th running of the Hun Championship was an outstanding event with a very competitive entry, challenging course, mostly good weather, and strong lying, explosive birds. We were privileged to have an outstanding slate of judges. The OAA and ASD were judged by Jim Yates of Pinckney, MI, and Tom Davis of Sylvania, OH. Both men are among the most experienced judges of our breed. The second team of judges for our Derby Classic, OSD and AAA was Steve Short of Airdrie, Alberta, and Howard Burbach of Pleasant Hill, MO. This is the irst time these two very experienced judges have worked together, and they made an excellent team. We are thankful to Purina for their sponsorship and also to Sierra Trading Post. All broke dog stakes paid out a cash purse of $750 to the Champion and $350 to the Runner Up. Plus the winner received a beautiful mount of a Hungarian Partridge. The birds set this trial apart from all others. Hungarian Partridges are very dif icult if not impossible to ind in such concentrations that would be feasible for a wild bird trial. But our birds, raised in Powell, WY by Karl Bear act just like wild birds. One of our judges, Steve Short, hunts Huns in Canada and felt these birds were as close to wild birds as you can get. We established coveys with food, water, and a recorded call. Often the coveys would lush wild with any pressure at all, whether from the dog, the handler, or the scout. Often there would be multiple lushes with birds remaining for the handler to lush. The covey lushes were explosive with birds heading in all directions at great speed. All of this bird activity was too much for many dogs to handle and over 50% of the dogs failed the steadiness test. Only one dog went birdless. Many handlers recognized the value of this event as a pre Nationals test of their dog s ability to handle the coveys of chukar that begin to form at Eureka. We shared great food and companionship in our bunkhouse with three meals a day prepared by Katie Dietel and staff, including a steak BBQ on a mesquite ire. Horses for judges and bystanders were provided by Terry Zygalinski from Watsonville, CA. The challenging course gave the judges an opportunity to judge all aspects of a dog s capabilities including stamina. The dogs were cast off and crossed a half mile of rolling short grass prairie before entering the Hun Habitat, which is a 2 ½ line of dense willows and high grass bordering a narrow creek with some standing water. The course then heads back over the prairie and up the Derby Draw with brush covered objectives and rock outcroppings on both sides. A right turn at the top takes the dogs along a high bench with deep draws also holding birds. This demanding course inishes on the open, rolling prairie where the dog has the opportunity to show off its stamina, and to be seen up to a mile away. The only downside to the course is the presence of heavy patches of short cactus on parts of the course. We provide protective boots from Ruff Wear, the best on the market. The dogs might walk funny at irst, but when the whistle blows, they are off and running without effect. A big thanks to all of the folks who helped behind the scenes, including Gary Kercher, Jeff Ellingson, Lynn Smith, and Bobbi Richardson.

Breaker started strong and forward to a ind at 15 minutes, then a STP at 21. Pointed again at 25 and 32 along the bottom habitat area. The move of the stake was made by Breaker as she left the bottom area and climbed the steep rock point up over the rim of the bench and was found standing about 50 yards from where she topped the rim. It took handler about 5 minutes to make the ride to where she had pinned a large covey. Breaker inished with strong casts through broken country along the bench rim to win the blue ribbon. Brace #10 Uodibar Blue Gold Hayley Killam Prairie Wind Eat Mya Dust Keith Richardson Blue ran the lower course with adequate range. Brace #3 Prairie Wind s Zackly Right Keith Richardson Uodibar s Party Punch Hayley Killam Zack started strong with great intent. He lowed across the ground with great range and intelligence. He had a stylish ind well forward at 25; huns were lushed all in order. He was sent from the low meadow and shot toward the rocky outcropping. He was seen moving expeditiously through the rocks and cover. He hooked with wind at 40 and disappeared into a canyon well to the right. He was seen with questionable activity at 48 and picked up. A bad break for an

other quality dog. Spike started with good range as he ran into an increased wind and warming temperatures. He went through the habitat area and checked some good objectives in the irst meadow. He was given a brief bath at 33 and sent to the rocky ledges where he moved with a steady forward race. He hooked with the wind at 40 and was brought forward at 48 where he inished with a steady race. Spike had good range and nice intentions but had no game contact. Brace #4 Sunrise Wandering Ronin Hayley Killam CJ s Anastacia Vonrostig Keith Richardson Ronin and Staci moved out with a competitive cast well away from the handlers. Both dogs were seen periodically in the far hills and valleys. They dropped into the habitat area and were seen moving well to the front. They were both seen well forward in the irst meadow. They were both brought to water at the gate before the second meadow. Ronin cast toward the willow creek bottom and was seen standing well forward at 28 with high style. Both handler and judge dismounted and Ronin worked in earnest to ind game. After some time huns lushed in heavy cover well in front of a stylish dog. Ronin was sent on through the meadow attacking the terrain well to the front. He was brought to water at 33 and sent to the rocky ledge with strong desire and increasing race. He continued moving with good intent along the rocky ledges and was watered again at 50. He was sent forward and inished the hour stronger than he started. This was a pleasing performance by both dog and handler. When Staci left the gate, she cast to the right and had a nice ind at 22 all in order. Keith released her where she made a very impressive move through the entire meadow and was found standing at 29. Another quality ind, all with good manners. She was given a drink at 34 and sent toward the rocky outcroppings where she made some impressive moves, but all came undone at 53 with a bump. Brace #5 Prairie Wind s Sizzlin Grizzlin Keith Richardson Uodibar s Blue Gold Hayley Killam Griz and Blue cast off in mid afternoon with a strong wind and low 80 s temperature. This seemed no match for Griz as he moved very well forward and with automatic movement. He worked the habitat area with super intelligence and headed toward the irst meadow but had bad luck at 25 and was picked up. Blue had a steady forward race. He had a nonproductive early in the race and another at 25. The handler picked him up. Brace #6 Von Hoss Keith Bryant BDK s Play Something Country Keith Richardson Hoss started well forward with great ground cover and intelligent moves. He was seen moving well forward. He was making impressive moves in the irst meadow but had a bad break at 21 and picked up. Kix had a bit of a problem hooking off with the strong wind. He was brought under control by the habitat area. He went on to have a good ind on huns at 20. He was sent forward and continued to grow stronger. He was sent to high country at 35 where he seemed to welcome the challenge. He was found standing well forward at 38 in heavy cover with a dug up ind. Kix inished the hour getting stronger as time went. Kix had de initely earned a piece of the action with this performance. Brace #7 Prairie Wind s Queen of Jazz Keith Richardson Bingo Buck s A Toast to Slick Tom Davis Ella wasted no time going to work. She started smart and powerful making a far reaching cast toward the far fence line. She was turned in by the scout to show nicely in front in the habitat area. She had a stop to lush at 15 on huns. She was sent toward the irst meadow and had a ind at 22 all in order. She had another point at 25 in heavy cover. No game was produced and Ella was sent forward. At 30 she was seen standing in heavy cover. Running birds were lushed well in front of this classy dog. She was sent to the rocky ledges where she had another stylish ind at 36. She was sent forward to inish the hour with style and power to spare. Slick ran a strong forward race combing the habitat area and irst meadow. He was seen standing at 28 all in order. This powerful dog got strong and made some exceptional moves into the rocky cover far to the front. He was seen moving far out in the open and disappeared going toward the rocky ledges. He was found standing by the scout at 50. Huns were produced and slick was sent forward where he continued to impress both judges with his stamina and intelligent use of the wind and cover. Slick would certainly get the judges nod. Four dogs were called back for the retrieve. Ronin came irst with game produced and Ronin sent for a quick retrieve. Slick handled his retrieve in good fusion. Kix was brought but unfortunately this nice dog left on the shot. Ella was brought up and handled all in

great style. Penny was brought up and handled the retrieve in good order. The judges named Ronin Champion, Slick Runner up with Ella 3rd and Penny 4th. This was certainly a irst class stake with some excellent dog work and good amateur handlers. It was a great pleasure to have judged this championship with a quality judging partner in Steve Short. It would be an honor to ride with you again. 19 For the second year this trial was held on the Lee Ranch near Amelia, Nebraska. David and Hayley Killam welcomed us with open arms and made their land and staff available to present the best possible scenario for a successful event. As we all know running on wild birds is the ultimate challenge for a pointing dog. Finding and handling these birds is a test for all dogs and those that are not trained on them are at a disadvantage. In the end only the best will meet the challenge. Despite more than adequate spring and summer rains the grounds were in great condition. Twelve one hour courses had be set up by the Killams and ranch manager Jason. Dirty ground would be kept to a minimum and all dogs should receive an equal shot. Meals were prepared by Chef Lupe and his group of happy cooks. They whipped up many Mexican delights that most of us gringos had never experienced. One of the highlights of the event was breakfast tacos served every morning on the grounds after the second brace. No one went home claiming weight loss. We were again blessed with sponsorship by Nestle/ Purina Pet Foods. Their ongoing support of sporting dog events is a great help when it comes to the inancial success of an event of this size. They also have developed superior feeds that allow our dogs to perform at their highest level. Field representative Roy Pelton was on hand for much of the Amateur Championship to socialize and bring everyone up to date on current information from Purina. The irst stake on the agenda was the Amateur Championship. Judges Jim West from Iowa and Chris Streitenberger from Ohio would be evaluating 22 competitors from all over the midwest. This time of year afternoon temperatures can offer up a challenge to the dogs. The mornings were cool, but by late morning through mid afternoon, the temperatures would rise to the low to mid 80 s. Four braces would be run in the morning followed by an extended lunch break and two braces in the late afternoon. Prairie Chickens and some Sharptails were seen in more than adequate numbers in every brace but were not always located by the dogs. Those entering dogs included Chase Verdoorn/Missouri, Terry Bomer/Texas, Hayley Killam/Texas, Charley Kelly/Colorado, Mike Aldrich/ New Mexico, Brooks Carmichael and Mark Wasserman/Kansas and Heath Kooima from Iowa. Tom Davis from Ohio and Charlie Kelly from Colorado also had entries in the open stakes. Amateur Shooting Dog Championship This year s winner came from brace 11 and was the exception to the rule. Uodibar s Sneaken Deacon (Deke) handled by Hayley Killam was cast off at 4:01 pm Monday afternoon. The temperatures had reached into the 80 s and the wind was from the E/SE. The reason I mention the wind direction is because the course ran southwest for half the brace then turned back north to inish the hour. This put the wind for the most part over the backs of the dogs if the simply ran to the front. The prairies don t offer the traditional tree lines we often talk about for dogs to run. It was obvious that Deke had mastered how to ind birds on the prairie. He ran a wide race early scoring his irst ind at 19. As the chickens were lushed Deke s style was high and tight with manners all in order. His second ind came at thirty again displaying great style and intensity was followed within 100 yards with another perfectly handled bird. At this point the course turned north back toward camp. With the wind at his back Deke settled into a more moderate race but used his experience to score an additional six inds all han

inds but opened up as we headed into the sandhills and inished strong going away. No additional inds were recorded. Overall a nice forward effort, with excellent manners on game and very little scouting. Third was Chisholm Creeks Riptide owned and handled by Mark Wasserman. Rip was a strong contender for the title with 3 well spaced inds and a forward shooting dog race for the last 45 minutes. Breaking away in the sandhills he was hard to keep forward until the course leveled off. His style and manners on game were lawless. His ground speed and desire to ind game make him a contender anytime he is entered. Amateur Shoo ng Dog Winners Standing: Pat Waresk, Jack Murphy, Roy Pelton, Tom Milam Kneeling: Hayley Killam with Uodibar s Sneakin Deacon and Uodibar s Blue Gold also was forth. Handled by Hayley Killam, Blue s race was not as big as the others but handled well for her owner in a workman like manner. She scored one ind with style and manners all in order. Two other dogs that need to be mentioned are Uodibar s Chocolate Wonder who ran a superb ground race but was birdless. Also, Chase Verdoorn s Snowy River Full Guage who was braced with the winner. For 50 minutes Gage was challenging the winner with a great prairie shooting dog race, three inds all handled with superb style, and one back. Unfortunately at 50 Gage was swallowed up by the prairies and not returned to judgment in time. He was eventually found far to the front. All Age Championship Open All Age Winners Standing: Sara King, Jack Murphy, Roy Pelton, Tom Milam Kneeling: Davis King with Royalrun s All Bets Are Off and Jim West with Slick s Cu n Wild. dled with the same style and manners around game. His handler chose not to over handle him but rather allowed Deke to do the work. He inished the hour with the same enthusiasm, ground speed, and style he displayed in the beginning. The runner up, also handled by Hayley was Uodibar s Angelina who ran in the second brace Monday morning. After a big breakaway Angie settled into a strong shooting dog race. After a back on a nonproductive she scored her irst ind at 13 with manners all in order at lush and shot. Finds were also recorded at 20 and 27 with style and manners second to none. She shortened some for a short period after her last two Judges Tom Milam from Texas and Jack Murphy from Oklahoma named Royalrun s All Bets Are Off was named winner on the basis of a strong forward race at moderate All Age range. Handled by David King, Bets had three well spaced inds with great style and manners inishing as strong as she began. Michael Patrick s Slick s Cuttin Wild handled by Jim West was named runner up. Scoring three inds during a strong forward race Joker inished with plenty of gas left in the tank. Uodibar s Against All Odds and Chisholm Creeks Jax Or Better placed third and forth respectively. Both of these dogs ran very strong All Age races. Open Shooting Dog Championship This stake attracted 52 entries from 8 professional handlers and one amateur. Jack Murphy and Tom Milam also judged this stake and named Chisholm Creeks Riptide the winner. Rip ran a strong forward race with power unmatched by any others. He never lets up as he moves forward searching as much ground as can be covered in an hour. He scored three times on chickens with the style and manners of the seasoned

Third and forth respectively were Sunrise Wondering Ronin handled by Eldon Hongo and Snowy River Bad News Biscuit handled by Pat Waresk. Both of these dogs ran strong races and scored inds on Prairie Chickens. We would like to thank all the pros and amateurs that have put the Prairie Chicken Championships on their trialing schedule. Professional trainers include Keith Gulledge, Eldon Hongo, John Rabidou, Dennis Brath, Pat Waresk, Ray Dohse, Art Armbrust, Dan DiMambro, David King, and Jim West. We hope to see you all back next year. Open Shoo ng Dog Winners Standing: Jack Murphy, Keith Gulledge, Roy Pelton, Tom Milam, Eldon Hongo, Hayley Killam Kneeling: Robbi Gulledge with Chisholm Creeks Rip de and Terry Hongo with Uodibar s Chocolate Wonder Derby Classic Winners Standing: Kelly Custer/Judge, Lou, Vegas Mathison/judge. Pat Waresk Kneeling: Hayley Killam and Terry Hongo with Uodibar s Tom Cat, John Rabidou with Uodibar s Pink Gold, Dennis Brath with Prairie Wind s Twi er Bug veteran he is. Rip was handled by Keith Gulledge for owner Mark Wasserman of Wichita, Kansas. Named runner up was Uodibar s Chocolate Wonder handled by Eldon Hongo for owners David and Hayley Killam. Hank as he is known ran a strong forward race scoring multiple inds before inishing with plenty of power. He is an attractive dog to watch while running and has great style and manners around game.

THE MEAN SEEDS PROJECT PRINTED WITH PERMISSION OF THE AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB The AKC Field Trial and Hunting Test Delegate Committee has been discussing the increasing concern regarding sporting dogs becoming ill due to infections attributable to barbed grass awns. This appears to be a growing problem for dogs that are being hunted, trained or performing in organized ield events. A number of articles have appeared in recent years identifying this problem. The spaniel community in particular has been actively involved in warning sporting dog owners of this danger and identifying the medical symptoms. Website links can be found at the end of this article. The Delegate Committee decided that it would be to the bene it of the entire sporting dog community if research was undertaken to shed light on this growing issue. Using the new AKC Humane Fund as a means to collect tax deductable contributions, a Mean Seeds sub fund was established. Contributions to the sub fund will be used exclusively to study this issue. The initial response has been strong with enough money immediately contributed to start the investigation. Contributions are being leveraged by an ACORN grant from the AKC Canine Health Foundation. Professor Bill Lauenroth from the University of Wyoming, Department of Botany has been hired to coordinate the research study. The AKC Delegate Committee and the Performance Events Department will review his indings, disseminate the information and based on the indings to date, determine if further research is justi ied. FOXTAILS FOXTAIL SEEDS Project Title ASSESSMENT OF CONVERSATION RESERVE PROGRAM (CRP) PLANTING OF GRASSES WITH BARBED AWNS Background: There is a growing perception among sporting dog owners that the incidence of grass awn migration disease has substantially increased over the past two decades. This disease has been well documented in the scienti ic and sporting dog literature, but no systematic assessments have been conducted to quantify its prevalence. Grass awn migration disease results when a grass awn enters the soft tissues of an animal and because of its barbs moves continuously forward through the tissue leaving a tract of infection behind it. Hundreds if not thousands of such cases have been documented in the canine veterinary literature (Brennan and Ihrke 1983, Frendin 1997, Walker et al. 2000, Wagner et al. 2006, Brukitt et al. 2007, Bigham and Nourani 2009). The most common site of grass awn entry was the external ear canal followed by inter digital webs, eye, nose, and lumbar area. Walker et al. (2000) reviewed 98 cases (51 dogs and 47 cats) and found that several of the bacteria isolated were exclusively from grass awns. The literature also contains detailed case studies of individual dogs such as the Yorkshire Terrier that suffered from septic pericarditis ( luid around the heart) as a result of penetration by a grass awn. This condition is also reported in large breeds and is primarily cased by foxtail migration (Wagner et al. 2006). Sporting publications also provide detailed information on serious injuries to dogs caused by the barbed awns. Illustrative are the materials compiled by the Springer Spaniel Parent Club s Committee (formed in 2007 to address the barbed awn problems). This compilation is available to the public at the Committee s dedicated website (

Table 1. Veterinary Teaching hospitals in the 10 state study area. Project Objective: The objective of this proposed research project is to conduct a systematic assessment of cases of grass awn disease in dogs over the past 20 years and to investigate seed mixes recommended for conservation reserve lands and assess the frequency of grasses with barbed awns as constituents of those mixes. Grasses and Awns Grasses occur in a single large plant family that contains approximately 11,000 species (Chapman 1996) distributed in 6 subfamilies and 39 tribes. Many of our most important agricultural crops are grasses (i.e. wheat, corn, and rice). Although the grasses share many important characteristics of their reproductive structures, only a portion of the species have awns and an even smaller group possess barbed awns of the type of concern to dogs. The awn is part of the sheath that encloses the grass seed. In many cases each seedhead has many seeds and many awns. Some grasses have barbs on the awns that aid in the dispersal of the seeds. One of the ways they do this is by attaching to things that come into contact with them. Animals and their fur are important ways grass seeds get transported to new locations. Scientists have a term for this mode of transport, zoochory (Malo and Suarez 1997). From the perspective of zoochory, the attachment of grass seeds to sporting dogs is an important natural process. From the perspective of the dogs and their owners it is a dangerous threat. The illustration to the right is of a green Canada Wildrye seed head with the awns clearly visible and an enlargement (102x) of a segment of one of the awns showing the barbs. The small proportion of grasses that possess awns that are dangerous to sporting dogs suggests that many alternatives are available for selection in seed mixes for lands to be planted with grasses. Speci ic objective 1: Collect data from the 8 veterinary teaching hospitals in the 10 state area from which planting information for Conservation Reserve Program lands will be collected (Table 1 and 2). Methods The focus on teaching hospitals rests on two assumptions: 1. They represent a progressive segment of the canine veterinary medical community and are likely to have personnel and equipment to pursue de initive diagnoses of grass awn disease; and 2. They represent a source of comparable data because they are leading the canine veterinary medical community in computer

The NRCS is the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agency responsible for providing technical assistance to farmers for the CRP. They must approve a seed mix before it can be used on any land enrolled in the CRP. Each state will have multiple lists that may vary across Soil Conservation Districts. Each of the grasses on each of the lists will be scored using the following scale: 1 = awnless; 2 = awns, but not dangerous to sporting dogs; 3 = awns dangerous to sporting dogs. Dangerous awns will be those that are prominent and have barbs. The references for scoring the grasses will be two recent volumes on the grasses of North America (Barkworth et al. 2003, Barkworth et al. 2007). Once the grasses on the lists have been scored the study will identify those lists that contain dangerous grasses and contact the state NRCS of ices again to inquire whether they have summarized records of how frequently each seed mixture has been used over the past 20 years and on how many acres. If these records are not available at the state level, ield of ices will be contacted. Initially a randomly selected list of 25% of the ield of ices in each state will be contacted for summary CRP cover crop planting information for their region. If they do not have summarized information the study will request the information for their 10 largest contracts and the total number of acres under contract in their region. This will allow for a sample based on these contracts for each region. Expected Outcome, Signi icance, and Application of Findings: The results of this research will provide a basis for characterizing the frequency of planting of dangerous barbed seeds over the past 20 years. If it can be determined from available data that, in fact, there has been a dramatic increase in the overall quantity of barbed seeds now being planted, such determination would surely become a factor in determining remedial measures for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's approach to CRP plantings and the overall education for dog owners and veterinarians. 30 NORM NELSON Questions and Answers Last month I asked the question, Can a dog think? As I stated when I went to college a teacher told the class a dog cannot think. In those days, if a teacher or a professor said something it was gospel and know one in their right mind would question their word. This has bothered me for over ifty years. After all these years I am going to try and set the record straight. Yes a dog can think. Maybe not as good as some people think, but he can think. I would like to relate a story that happened to me. My wife and I were hunting in Oregon, when our German Shorthair Pointer went into a canal to get a drink of water. The canal had been drained for the winter and it had cement walls. The walls were slippery and steep, he could not exit. I had a rope, a check cord as we call it, and I tried to lasso him, after about the second try of lassoing him, the dog reached down with his mouth and picked up the end of the rope. While he held on to the end of the rope with his mouth, I was able to pull him up out of the canal. He had never been trained to do this. He thought out the problem. Another example is when a dog is housebroken he will go to the door and sit to go outside. He is thinking if I sit here my master will understand, I have to go to the bathroom, so please open the door for me. We taught him to go outside to go to the bathroom but we did not teach him to tell us when he has to go. He has to think. My story of the month is about Joanne. It a twopart story and I hope you enjoy. The irst story is when I asked Joanne to pick up some training birds, Bobwhite Quail, for me from the breeder. Joanne never put her dog in a crate unless she had to, and he always rode on the front seat alongside her, Rick was in his seat in the station wagon with her. She picked up the birds from the breeder; they were in a cardboard shipping crate. These cardboard crates have a lap door that is sealed with duck tape. They are very ef icient for transporting Quail in most cases but they were not made for a sixty pound German Shorthair bouncing around on top of them. Thing went well and she started for San Jose. While on Highway 17 a curving, mountainous road, Rick found he could not resist the crateful of birds. After a few minutes, a crateful of Bob Whites were free in a station wagon with one happy dog chasing them from the back end of a station wagon to the front. Joanne just kept on driving to my house as there was really no where to stop. When she pulled in the driveway, my father in law was sitting in front of the house, and he fell out of his chair laughing. He and Joanne put the car in the garage and were able to catch up Rick and remove him from the car. I was summed and with the aid of a ishing net, I was able to return the birds to their crate. I think we only lost one. From that, time on my father in law referred to Joanne as the crazy bird lady. My next story is also about Joanne. She decided to take a horse shoeing class at Merced College. When she was well into the class, she asked me if I would bring my horses to the college for shoeing. She informed me that the instructor would supervise all of the students and they would do a good

job. Getting your horses shod at the price they wanted was a good deal so I accepted. The next day I arrived at the class with three horses to be shod. While my horses were being shod I watched very closely as to what was going on, I had a lot of money invested in these animals. After class and on the way home Joanne asked me, what do you think of the class? My reply Joanne do you want a grade out of this class? Sure, she replied, even though she was taking the class as a fun class. I then replied Joanne if you want a good grade you need to learn how to chew tobacco. I told her all horse shoers chewed tobacco. There are three types of tobacco to chew. The irst one is Copenhagen; this is the one your teacher chews. I do not recommend this one because it will put you right on your knees. The second one is Days Work a bar tobacco, it is like a candy bar in shape and comes with a licorice lavor. I recommend this one for you. The third is Beach nut and comes lavored and it comes in a pouch. This is what all the students are chewing. Therefore, off to the store we went and bought a bar of Days Work. We then returned home and explained to my wife what was going on. We then went out on the patio and I explained you just bite off a piece of tobacco and put it between your cheek and gum. Both my wife and Joanne, being the good sports tried it. In just a few minutes both were at the rail of the patio, extracting what was in their stomach. The next day in class Joanne was at the forge working when the instructor came up to see how she was doing. Joanne reached in her pocket, pulled out her Days Work, took a bite And turned to the instructor and said, would you like some holding out the Days Work. With that, the instructor broke out laughing. His reply I will bet the dog trainer put you up to this. Joanne received an A in the class and no, she does not chew. 45 GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER CLUB OF COLORADO October 7, 2010 October 10, 2010 Karval, CO great dogs and great weather. The GSPCC prides itself in releasing an abundance of birds for all stakes. By the end of the trial, the courses resembled a mine ield, making it dif icult to hide a less than fully broke dog. Even with the tough economy, entries were strong again this year. All three gun dogs stakes were either 4 or 5 point majors. The amateur gun dog stake continues to be a trial favorite. The stake features shoot on course which gets rave reviews from the handlers. The Mosher Ranch is rolling CRP with plenty of objectives. Cover this year was unusually high due to late spring/early summer moisture. A big shout out to Leroy Mosher and the surrounding landowners for their willingness to let us use their grounds. Prairie Wind s Back To Zack Winner Open Derby Owner Keith and Bobbi Richardson I want to personally extend a thank you to all of the pros who supported the trial: Art Armbrust, David and Sarah King, G. F. Henry and Dennis Brath. Our judges did an excellent job carrying out their duties. A special thanks goes out to Gary Nehring from MN and Kelly Custer from OH for giving us 4 days out of their busy schedules. No trial is successful without the help and support of club members and volunteers. Kudos to Lenny Morales, Bill Anderson, Keith Bryant, Bruce Bryant, Chris Bryant, Michael Patrick, Rick and Dorothy Giauque, Gary Fromme, Ray Yenchick and Brooks Carmichael from NE. Their countless hours of marshalling, gunning, planting birds serving lunch and driving dog wagons helped make this a another memorable event for all who attended. Tjust Lucky Three Spot Winner Amateur Gun Dog Owner Bill Anderson & Keith Bryant The GSPC of Colorado held its fall trial on October 7 th through October 10 th at the Mosher Ranch near Hugo, CO. The weather was unseasonably warm for this time of year. The tough scenting conditions and high temperatures affected the dogs on Thursday and Friday, however, by the weekend the weather cooled and performances improved. All of the keys to having a successful trial were in place: great grounds, great birds, Kevin B.
