1 2008 NGSPA REGION 7 CHAMPIONSHIPS Region 7 Championship 2008 Open Shooting Dog Duval County Ranch Freer, Texas Scribe: David Quijano Judges: Tom Milam and Steve Short Stakes Managers: Harvey Franco and David Quijano The Shooting Dog started early Thursday morning with the temperature crisp, but with the sky bright, the afternoon warmed up nicely. The OSD stake was completed on Friday. Brace 1 The first brace of the event featured John Rabidou with Uodibar s Goldie, (Goldie), and Keith Richardson handling BDK s Break the Bank (Breaker). Breaker quickly found birds and displayed his manners nicely. At 8:15 Breaker had his second point and Goldie was no where to be found. Breaker broke to the front and continued his run. With a 3 rd find at 8:20, Breaker wore himself out and was picked up by his Handler. Brace 2 The second brace included Prairie Wind's Taken A Shot, (Shooter), handled by Eldon Hongo and Uodibar s Woodman, (Woody), guided by John Rabidou. Shooter had his first fine at 9:18 with Woody backing him. Shortly thereafter, 10:00 Woody produced his first find all manners in order. Woody had his second find at 15:00, staunch at point, all manners in order. Woody displayed a very nice forward movement which resulted in his 3 rd find. Again, Woody moved forward nicely and had his 4 th find. Shooter s next find came at 20:00 with a strong bold point. Shooter s cast was flowing and stylish to the front with a strong finish. Brace 3 The third brace top dog was MSR s Mr Ed (Ed), handled by James Messer, who revealed early the ability he possesses to cover ground. Uodibar's Gucci, (Gucci) handled by Terry Richter also was a dog ready to cover the grounds and find birds. Gucci pointed first at 15 minutes into the brace with a double point following. Both dogs quickly covered more ground and double pointed for the second time. Again, both dogs pointed a covey find for another double point. The speed and ground covered was very impressive and resulted in 2008 Open Shooting Dog Winners 1st Place Uodibar s Wood Man 2nd Place Uodibar s Little Lena yet another double point that unfortunately was a nonproductive. The sixth and final find was given to Gucci and Ed s honor was picture perfect. Brace 4 Uodibar's Lucy of Laredo, (Lucy), was handled by John Rabidou. Lucy s brace mate, MVK Jazz, (Jazz), handled by C. Kelly had the first find of this brace. John handled Lucy nicely around Jazz who remained staunch, steady to shot, and in short order, after a nice move to the front was found standing and produced a nice second find. Lucy clocked her first find at 8 minutes into the run. The true veteran that Lucy is, she demonstrated staunch manners with a large covey find on her third find. Jazz had one relocation attempt that resulted in a nonproductive. Brace 5 The fifth brace displayed 3D's Dixie's Cloud Dancer (Dancer), handled by Rick Dodge. Dancer made a huge move out front and on her way back she had her first point at 12 minutes. With the winds at 25 miles an hour, it resulted in a nonproductive find. With another nice run along a brush line, Dancer was found standing. Birds flew over her head and she marked. Dancer s third and final point again resulted after a nice move to the front and she showed a nice open field find. Her brace mate, Circle HAJ s Hawkofahoosier, (AJ), presented by Dennis Brath broke away fast and hard to the far edge and never looked back.

2 Brace 6 Keg Creek Rising Cooper (Cooper), was handled by Dennis Brath and Kirk Boomer ran Texas Dixie cup, (Allie). At 5 minutes the dogs had a double find. Both dogs worked nicely and Allie had two more finds back to back. Both Handlers picked their dogs up. Brace 7 3D's Dixie's Mocha Jo, (Mocha), handled by Rick Dodge and Prairie Wind's Queen of Jazz, (Ella), handled by Keith Richardson made up the last brace on Thursday. Mocha had her 1 st find at 5 minutes into the brace, pointed Chucker at 10 minutes, had her 3 rd find at 14 minutes and a non-productive at 16 minutes. Ella had her first find at 12 minutes and two non-productive at 25 minutes and 30 minutes, but other wise displayed nice movement. Brace 8 1 st Brace on Friday Morning Spekk s A Need for Speed, (Speed), handled by Dennis Brath and Carriage Hills St. Thomas Breeze, (Breeze), handled by Harvey Franco were scheduled to start our day. Breeze was pulled due to a foot injury and Speed was exactly that; Speed spent the brace lost. Brace 9 Eldon Hongo ran Willows on the Spot (Spot) and John Rabidou ran Uodibar s Shoot The Moon, (Moon). Spot had a find at the first water tank; Eldon flushed, shot, and sent Spot off with a nice forward cast with a nice display of team work. Spot was found standing in tick brush on his 2 nd point soon there after. At just 14 minutes into the brace, Spot had his 3 rd find, again showing off that perfect 12 o clock tail. Moon had some nice moves, but was not himself and John chose to pick Moon up 36 minutes into the brace. Brace 10 Uodibar's Little Lena, (Lena) was handled by Pat Waresk and was accompanied by Oakridge's Duke Of Golden West, (Duke), who was handled by Steve Pasas. Lena worked the field producing a find 5 minutes into the brace. She displayed a 12 o clock tail, held her head high, and handled like a dream with 3 birds flying directly at her. Lena covered the grounds like a winner, had a second find and was absolutely picture perfect. Lena s third point was impressive, but resulted in a nonproductive. Duke at his first find half way into the brace and required a relocation on his second find. The result was a find and Lena backing in the distance. Duke s third find was a nice size wild covey. Brace 11 Pat Waresk ran Nate and Dennis Brath ran Caden s Ruger Weltmeister,(Ruger). Nate s first point was staunch given the handler flushed the bird directly at Nate. Nate finished with two nice finds and an impressive run. Rugger s first point was at 5 minutes into the brace and finished with two finds as well. Brace 12 Casting off at 2:05, in the heat of the day, Vogelsang s Toby Von Blitzkrieg, (Toby), handled by James Messer made a huge move out to the right and forward. Uodibar's Smart Albert (Albert), was handled by Pat Waresk. Toby s first find was at 2:18, his tail was held high, James provided a quick bird flush, Toby was steady to shot, and they displayed an impressive quick cast off back into the field. Strategic dog placement & cast direction was illustrated by Mr. Messer. Toby s 2 nd point looked similar to the first with a quick flush, however the dog had lost a boot, so James quickly rebooted and sent the dog back into the field in record time. Albert had an open field 2:33, his tail was nice and high but he was relocated three times with a nonproductive. At 2:52 Toby stole Albert s second find, but Albert held his point nicely thru the flush to shot. Toby unfortunately was picked up. Brace 13 The last brace of the second day, Steve Pasas presented Oakridge s Janie of Golden West, (Janie). Steve worked his dog into the field and had his first point at 3:17, 15 minutes into the BYE brace. The dog was working nicely, but some what close. His second point was right at 30 minutes and he held nicely for the steady to shot. 3 The Amateur Championship started Monday morning with overcast skies and temperatures in the 60 s. Brace #1 Uodibar s Gucci (Gucci) Richter Gucci garnered three evenly spaced finds and a nice race with moderate range. She set the early standard. 3D s Dixie s Mocha Jo (Mocha) Dodge A wild covey in the first minutes proved to be too much for Mocha. Brace #2 Uodibar s Woodman (Woody) Killam Uodibars Woodman, owned and shown by Hayley Killam was impressive with his forward well directed race which resulted in finds at 6, 15, 32, 45 and 55 demonstrating his sustained drive and motivation. What separated him from the winner was some movement on two finds and he shorted a bit at the end of the hour. His efforts earned him the Runner-up spot. Texas Dixie Cup (Allie) Bomer Allie had a nice cast in the second field and scored two finds before pointing again with the handler unable to produce a bird and having to relocate without results. She finished with another find, manners in order but lacked range. Brace #3 Oaks Opal Von Greiwe (Opal) Pasas Opal had two finds with manners in order however Pasas elected to pick the dog up when he was unable to keep her forward. Prairie Wind s Queen of Jazz (Ella) Richardson Ella s had two finds with one non productive. Her manners were not up to the handles expectations and he picked her up after her last find. Brace #4 G & N s Cold Struddle (Struddle) Mason Struddle had a big race the first 30 minutes, one find with good style and manners but shorted the last 30 with a find at the end. Prairie Wind s Taken a Shot (Shooter) Richardson Shooter had a find in the second field with everything in order but Richardson elected to not continue when it was discovered the dog had cut his tongue on a briar. The temperature by this time had dogs looking for the water tanks quite frequently and the handler did not want to change the overheating Amateur Shooting Dog Winners 1st Place Vogelsang s Toby von Blitz 2nd Place Uodibar s Wood Man Brace #5 Uodibar s Lucy of Laredo (Lucy) Killam Lucy had a nice race going and was thought to be on point at the end but scout and handler were unable to find her in time. Texas Practical Magic (Hermione) Moseley Hermione ran a nice consistent forward race with moderate range and one find with style and manners in order. Brace #6 Penny Richardson Penny had one find at eight but her race shortened due to the heat and the handler elected to pick her up. MSR s Crystal Blue Persuasion (Crystal) Messer Crystal met a chukar coming around the corner of one of the brush lines which proved to be too much temptation. Brace #7 MSR s Want to be a Wizard (Ron) Messer Nice young dog that made some good moves but got hot and handler picked him up. WVK Max (Max) Kelley Max made some very good moves despite the heat but was gone from judgment and handler concerned about the heat got the tracker out to locate him.

4 Brace #8 MSR s Gone with the Wind (Windy) Messer Due to the heat, scenting was difficult and Windy scored only one find with two stops to flush and one non productive. Texas Cassino s Mad Cash (Cash) Boomer Cash also had a non-productive in the heat but had a nice chukar find and pointed a wild covey of quail. Although the last brace of the day, temperature were still in the 80 s making it difficult for dogs to have a strong race. DAY TWO The day started again with overcast skies and temperatures in the high 50 s with a front starting to move in and the wind increasing steadily all day. Brace #9 Texas Flying Wizard (Harry) Mosley Harry started off nicely with a forward race but shorted at the end. He was very stylish and well behaved on his three finds. Carriage Hills St. Thomas Breeze (Breeze) Messer Breeze started with a big race with one find early and then had an extended absence showing up from behind. He was a little difficult for Messer, the stand in handler, to control but managed to have two finds and a back after his absence. Brace #10 Grizz Richardson Gizz took a hard right on the first part of the course and handler chose to go find him when the scout was unable to show the dog. MVK Jazz (Jazz) Kelley Jazz started off fine and was last seen going down a brush line. Handle dispatched the scout that found the dog on point but Jazz could not resist the temptation when the birds started moving in front of her. Brace #11 Oakridge s Duke of Golden West (Duke) - Pasas Duke was running the edges of the course and was last seen at twenty two. Tonelli s Little Stinker (Dixie) Messer Dixie was running a good race but was seen under birds. Brace #12 Vogelsangs Toby von Blitz (Toby) Messer Toby owned by David Vogelsang and James Messer and handled by James emerged the winner of the 2008 renewal of the NGSPA Region 7 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship. Toby a seasoned veteran and multiple Champion, ran a powerful forward race with a lofty and merry way of going. He carded two well spaced finds and suffered one non productive stand. His manners and powerful finish separated him from the field. Toby finished in rough recently roller chopped country continuing to show drive despite adversity. During the last few minutes a severe front moved through with wind, lighting and rain producing some nervous riders and horses. His win was well deserved! Texas Maid in the Shade (Shady) Boomer Shady was not on top of her game and the handler elected to pickup after hander called point three times and was unable to produce birds. Brace #13 The wind picked up considerable after lunch which shorted the race or made bird work more challenging for the last two braces. 3D s Dixie s Cloud Dancer (Dancer) Dodge Dancer scored six finds during the hour but did not have the race or manners of the winners. MSR s Mr Ed (Ed) Messer Ed hunted the country well and had three finds with good style and manners but handler was unable to produce birds after relocation on two other points. Brace #14 Oakridge s Janie of Golden West (Janie) Pasas Janie had a non productive early in the course followed by a nice find but crashed on a chukar about half way. BDK s Break the Bank (Breaker) Richardson The wind shorted Breakers race but maintained good manners on a difficult stop to flush on a covey and then went on to have four well spaced finds. Stake Results: ASD Champion: Vogelsang s Toby von Blitz (Toby) Owned by David Vogelsang & James Messer Handled by James Messer ASD Runner-Up: Uodibar s Woodman Owned by David & Hayley Killam Handled by Hayley Killam
